Hydraulic Jump Experiment Essay
Hydraulic Jump Experiment
SUMMARY
The Objective of this experiment is to observe the flow patterns and behaviour of the water before
after the jump Also to quantify the energy lost due to a hydraulic jump. The observed and
theoretical ratios of upstream and downstream depths will be compared, this will show the
limitations to purely theoretical analysis.
The experiment showed that a hydraulic jump occurs when when liquid at high velocity
discharges into a zone of lower velocity, a rather abrupt rise occurs in the liquid surface. The
rapidly flowing liquid is abruptly slowed and increases in height.
The results clearly show the limitations of purely theoretical and purely experimental analysis due
to the range of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hydraulic jump occurs when the supercritical flow occurs in a channel of which normal flow
condition is subcritical.
h2/h1 = ВЅ (в€
љ(1+8F12 ) 1)(4)
The Froude number is calculated using this equation:
F1 = в€
љ(q2/gh12)(5)
The hydraulic jump, also known as standing wave, is a rapid transition from supercritical flow to
subcritical flow. The transition is generally a turbulent process with a significant energy loss(∆E).
that can not be neglected. A hydraulic jump is commonly used to dissipate energy, and reduce the
downstream velocity.
To calculate the specific energy at the two separate heights this equation is used:
E = h1 + q2/2gh12(6)
The total energy loss can be derived as
О”E = E1 E2(7)
To find the height of the jump between the smallest and largest heights:
О”h = h2 h1(8)
Finally, the length of the hydraulic jump is given by:
L = 5О”h(9)

Becoming A Register Nurse
Research Paper There are many majors out there and tons to choose from. Many students in high
school by now have an idea on what they re interested on becoming. So far, I have no clue on
what I want to study, but I do have a picture of it. Choosing a career is one of the most important
decisions you ll ever make in your life. Because of that you have to choose very carefully and
make sure whatever you choose will suite you. Whether it s from engineering or going into the
medical field, they all take time. Here I have chosen 5 careers that I myself am very interested on
studying after high school.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I ve been interested in becoming a register nurse because it doesn t take that much time. You only
need your bachelor s degree and that only take 4 years. If I were to ever become a nurse, I would
go to David Lipscomb because it has a really good nursing program. 80% of students graduated
from the program in 2015. The college entrance requirement is 3.0 or higher GPA and 25 or
higher ACT. The average starting salary for a register nurse in the United States is $71,000 per
year. Register nurses typically don t a lot of benefit packages as other careers would offer, but here

Examples Of Political Antisemitism
Antisemitism is broken down into two areas both modern antisemitism, and political antisemitism,
but even before modern antisemitism and political antisemitism there was traditional antisemitism
which was spun off of Christian anti Judaism. The traditional way was created because
Christians believed the jewish people needed to be punished or reprimanded because of their
rejection for Jesus Christ as the Messiah, but also for economic misbehavior and in some cases
people even believed the jewish people had desire to control the world and this was the myth of the
jews. The hatred was focused the most on the stereotype of the Jew and not necessarily the people
who lived within authentic Jewish communities. Traditional antisemitismcan be based... Show more

Turning the government away from the real problems in the political realm, and toward the wrong
hatred is now thought to be one of the worst ideas in international history. It is now believed the
only way to be a true extreme nationalist country is to isolate the country from others such as
todays modern state of North Korea. The Nazi Germany era thrived off of blaming the Jewish

Summary 2008 Financial Crisis
The financial crisis began in early 2006 when the subprime mortgage market in the U.S. began to
display an increasing rate of mortgage defaults. These defaults lead, in late 2006, to a decline in
US housing prices after nearly a decade of exceptionally high growth. Many Americans watched as
their primary source of wealth become increasingly devalued. By late 2007, the prime mortgage
markets were showing higher than normal default rates as well.
Collateralized Mortgage Obligations (CMOs), a type of collateralized debt obligations (CDOs),
allowed these problems to spread from the mortgage market to other sectors of the economy,
having especially widespread effects on financial markets as a whole. CMOs were mortgage
backed securities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These liquidity problems turned to insolvency in September of 2008, when private lending froze
completely in a number of important credit markets, such as commercial paper. As a result, non
financial businesses were unable to get access to the financing they required to function normally,
leading to problems in the real economy.
The real economy began to exhibit problems related to the financial crisis as early as March
2006, when investment expenditure on residential structures began to decline. In early 2008, this
decline spread to investment in business equipment and consumer spending on durable goods. It
wasn t until the summer of 2008 that consumer spending broadly and GDP began falling, signs
of a recession. (In December 2008, the National Bureau of Economic Research, official arbiter of
business cycles dated the formal beginning of the recession as December 2007.) While the public
had been concerned about recession for much of the year, it wasn t until the fall that the economy
began to decline at more than a 6% annual rate. Congress responded by passing the TARP plan to
assist failing financial institutions. This plan was meant to decrease the severity of the recession by
treating its cause: the financial crisis.

My Aunt Julie Is One Of The Most Amazing, Sweet, And...
My aunt Julie is one of the most amazing, sweet, and hilarious people I have ever met.
She has the most beautiful and kind soul. She was also born with a severe mental and physical
handicap called Cerebral Palsy. It is a condition that occurs when the brain hasn t completely
developed at birth, in Julie s case she was born prematurely and was also a twin, making her
even smaller and more frail at birth. Julie was born not breathing and the doctors couldn t get her
to start breathing for 5 minutes after she was born. She is now in her early fifties, but only has
the mental capability of a 78 year old child. She has been in a wheelchair for her whole life and
never even taken one step, she also has very minimal control of her arms and hands. Julie also
has a very hard time controlling her temper and her emotions, I can only assume that it is because
she feels as though she is trapped in her own body and will never be able to get out of it and feel
free.
Julie has this crazy love for Nascar and has never missed watching a race. Everyone has their little
obsessions, for my six year old nephew it is toy cars, my older brother it is playing the guitar, for
me it is Cadbury Eggs, but for Julie it is Nascar races and the Nascar driver Dale
Earnhardt JR. In 2013 my mom and I had decided to take Julie to go see the Daytona 500 in
Daytona Florida. This was such a huge deal for Julie because she had never been out of the state

Similarities Between 1984 And Anthem
Fear in Equality and Winston Comparison Essay There are many reasons for books to be banned
in countries. The books 1984 and Anthem is both banned in countries for being a dystopian novel.
These books have a lot of similarities, but the thing that separates them is that their differences.
They differ by three simple questions, the first question is what the main character fears. The
second question is why does the government fear change? The third and final question is what is
going to happen to the peoples who push the change that the government fears? In 1984, the main
character, Winston becomes aware of the past of how the party came into the party and he tries to
stop the party from having any more power. In Anthem the main character, named Equality, creates
an invention known as the light bulb and he gets shut down for his invention and he gets cast out.
The main character in both books has to be afraid of something due to the fact that they are
always being watched, but in different ways. In 1984 A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness,

that tried to control the people. Equality s of the light bulb is shot right down by the government

Ancient Kingship and Rulers Essay
Kings and rulers started to emerge as soon as people moved away from living in tribes. This was
the case with the Jews when they have decided to unite under one ruler. However, long before
them the first empire was established in Mesopotamia by Sargon of Akkad in 2334 BCE (Kelly,
2011). The essay will compare kingship in three geographically and chronologically different
societies. They are the following: Babylonians during Hammurabi s reign (1792 1750 BCE), Neo
Assyrians (934 610 BCE), and the Jews (1000 BCE). In order to avoid historical distortions,
primary sources from those time periods will be used. These three communities have influenced
each other in different fields. Therefore, we can see similarities in their ruling systems.... Show

According to the Advice to a Prince, gods only could judge and punish the ruler, for example, if
he (ruler) takes silver... Marduk, lord of Heaven and Earth, will set his foes upon him...
(Sanders, p.70). Consequently, we can assume that ruler s power have increased enormously,
since no matter what he does (even despotism) is supposed to be controlled by gods. Finally, the
kingship in Israel has some differences as Jews are monotheistic. Nonetheless, the Jews believed
in god s involvement in daily life as well. More importantly, god (Yahweh) was believed to
decide who the king is and whether he must be changed (Sanders, p.72). This shows some
parallels with Assyrians where gods only could judge the ruler. As a result, it is seen that
regardless of regions and number of gods (monotheism or polytheism) rulers in ancient times were
connected with divine power. In fact, at ancient times rulers often represented the choice of god(s),
whereas presently they represent the choice of people. This, I think, led to more fearful and
respectful attitude towards rulers due to their divine support. In addition to the connection with the
divine power, rulers in ancient world had one very distinct feature. Almost always rulers were men,
with very few exceptions. Thus it is clearly seen that people at that time lived in patriarchal society.
Moreover, rulers promoted patriarchy implicitly or sometimes even explicitly through their rules.
For example, according to

Machiavelli and the Use of Antiquity in The Prince and The Discourses
The Renaissance was a time of classical revival and a turning point from the Middle Ages to the
Early Modern period in the course of history. Ancient texts and artifacts became sources of
inspiration for intellectuals and artists alike, and the desire to emulate or even surpass the
achievements of the past prompted them to study antiquities closely and saw them as models and
guidance. People were consciously distinguishing themselves from the medieval thoughts and using
history to make something new for their own era. In the field of political philosophy there s no
exception. Niccolo Machiavelli is perhaps the most representative and groundbreaking figure of this
trend in political philosophy. With his erudition in ancient literature, histories and political thoughts,
Machiavelli draws various sources from antiquity to critic and response to the political environment
of histime. While one may find seemingly discrepancies in The Prince and The Discourse on the
First Ten Books of Tius Livy, the use of histories as guide to demonstrate or propose ideal rules is
apparent in both works. We should note that synthesizing ancient philosophy or thoughts with
contemporary thoughts is nothing new. Thomas Aquinas, for example, reconciled Aristotelianism
and Christianity in his work Summa Theologica, using ancient antiquity to back up his Christian
beliefs. What is so noteworthy in Machiavelli is his emphasis and

Advanced Persistent Threat At Sony Picture Entertainment (...
Introduction According to lecture note and presentation from Dr. Tamir Bechor on October 21,
2016, advanced persistent threat: (i) pursues its objectives repeatedly over an extended period of
time; (ii) adapts to defenders efforts to resist it; and (iii) is determined to maintain the level of
interaction needed to execute its objectives. (Bechor, 2016) These objectives include building and
strengthening its harmful system within an organization infrastructure in order to disrupt activities,
obstruct normal operations, and extract sensitive information. Hence, this paper will clarify how
advanced persistent threats (APTs) were achieved in the Sony Picture Entertainment (SPE) breach.
In addition, examine the characteristics of the SPE threat level and adversary level relating to the
threat actors capabilities, intent, and targets. Moreover, review why SPE previous security
vulnerabilities and weaknesses or significant investments didn t benefit to detect or prevent this
breach. (Bechor, 2016)
Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) One attribute of APT refers to the continuous attacks from threat
actors to penetrate SPE infrastructure. Although the attack on Sony Corporation in 2011 to its
network might not have been related to this incident in 2014, it has been proven the hackers behind
the SPE attack exploited a previously undisclosed or unknown [Zero Day] vulnerability in its
computer systems that gave them unlimited access to the entirety of SPE s network. (Bechor,

During special events like prom, graduation, house parties and the regular weekend gatherings
teens can be found celebrating, raising red solo cups, and enjoying being young. However, at
the end of the night it s not the teens that find themselves in trouble with the law, it s the parents.
These events are socially referred to as drinking parties when parents knowingly or unknowingly
have people under the drinking age in their home participating in underage drinking (Lawyers).
Some parents feel that it s safer for their teens and their friends to drink in the privacy of their
home. Other parents have no idea that underage drinking is going on in their home. Regardless
of the situation there are consequences for all involved (Lawyers). When parents decide to host
an event where there is a possibility underage drinking can take place, parents should be aware of
social host liability . When hosting a social event were drinking is taking place parents become
liable for any injury or injuries that are caused due to the alcohol that the parent served or supplied
(lawyers). Liability does not stop at injuries but includes medical bills, property damage, and pain
and suffering. In more serious cases parents can also face jail time or be fined by the court
(Lawyers). However, the children are the ones who unfortunately suffer the most consequences
when it comes to underage drinking. According to Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services

Essay about William Gibson s Idoru
Idoru Idoru by william gibson is nothing less than an awe insiring book for me. no other author
that i have come across can inspire one to recreate visions of reality at the turn of every page.
Gibsons books are all compelling; neuromancer (1984) needing perhaps a special mention; as this
book single handedly created the cyberpunk genre, aswell as coining phrases such as cyberspace .
However, as one of his later works (1996), we are able to find within Idorus more contempory
exploration of our worlds transformation into a high density infomation governed datasphere, an
analysis of what might happen to certain aspects of humanity as technology, infomation, and a new
reality converge within the global infrastructure.

It examines the (basically exagerated, and possibly likely)new media conglomerates, the power
they have, how the use and abuse it especially in relation to the world economy. One can spend
pages and pages outlining the aspects of the world that Idoru covers; every little point begs to be
interperated, and as there is such a wealth of infomation, ideas, and typographic references to
modern culture, a mass of isomorphisms which reach out to one, this book is, to me, personally at
least, bordering on revolutionary.
Idoru is however, not a work of classic liturature, and doesnt share much with its classical literary
counterparts (Brave new world for example), but as a work on its own, within its own genre it is
certainly one of the finest. Perhaps in this analysis, one should consider the usual analytical tools
(plot, structure, characterisation etc), aswell as how this book could help us in predicting a
(considerably less dark) vision of the future, not to mention what it is about this book that inspires
one so much.
As previously mentioned, this novels plot is somewhat complicated this however does not detract
from the overall flow of the book in a sense, the density of infomation and detail we are faced with
when reading, acts as a mechanism to allow us to live the moment in the novel a citizen in an
infomtion dense society would be faced with so many details on a daily basis, it

The Significance of Xenia in Homer’s The Odyssey
Kaitlyn Lambert

The Significance of Xenia in Homer s Odyssey The society of Ancient Greece was very much
centered around the gods, and a healthy fear of the consequences of not obeying their laws. The
next most important staples of the society were the concepts of braver, pride, and hospitality, or
Xenia. The significance of these values is shown quite clearly in The Odyssey of Homer.
In the first five books of the epic, Telemachos is shown great hospitality by the kings, Nestor, and
Menelaos. As Homer writes in description of Nestor s reception of Telemachos and Athena, These
men, when they sighted the strangers, all came down together and gave them greeting with their

(Homer.9.289 2910 This is one example of the brutality that Odysseus and his crew were also
shown, rather than hospitality. The range of degrees of hospitality shown to the travelers is a
testament to the number of people who ignored the law of Xenia.
The hospitality that Telemachos and Penelope show Odysseus when he returns home, even
though they do not know who he really is yet another example of xenia. This hospitality helps in
his winning his home back from the suitors. Telemachos welcomes Odysseus into the house, and
gives him permission to beg the suitors of money. Despite knowing this, said suitors harass him
when he asks for coins. In response to this, Telemachos says , There will be no pleasure in this

I drive away no man. Telemachos s defense of Odysseus, even in guise of a vagabond, shows
great grace on his part, and show great hospitality, on top of undermining the suitors, thus giving
them less power. After the suitors have gone home, Penelope summons her maidservant, saying ,
Eurynome, bring up a chair, and put a fleece on it, so that the stranger can be seated, and tell me
his story, and listen to what I have to say. (Homer.18.97 99) This statement shows that Penelope is

Set Out To Synthesize 2-Methyl-4-T
This experiment set out to synthesize 2 methyl 4 heptanone from the supplied starting materials
containing four carbons. During week one, 1 chloro 2 methylpropane was reacted with magnesium
to form the Grignard reagent. The Grignard was then reacted with butanal to produce 2 methyl 4
heptanol. Using IR spectroscopy, the success or failure of the formation of the alcoholwas observed,
concluding week one. During week two, 2 methyl 4 heptanol was oxidized in order to form our
desired product of 2 methyl 4 heptanone. Both a GC and IR spectroscopy were observed in order
to determine the presence of a newly formed ketone. The results of our experiment from the IR
taken during week one showed no formation of an alcohol. The GC and IR spectroscopy... Show

Instead, the GC and IR spectroscopy showed the presence of an aldehyde, as opposed to the
desired product of a ketone. The failure of this experiment was likely caused by a null reaction
between 1 chloro 2 methylpropane and magnessium, leading to no, or very little, Grignard
reagent being formed. The mixture between the 1 chloro 2 methylpropane and magnessium was
conducted over an extended time period with exessive amounts of reagent used in order to
attempt to push the reaction forward. However, it is believed that these extreme tactics lead to a
false positive in the formation of the Grignard reagent and produced negative repercussions
down the line when further experimentation was conducted. The data obtained by the IR
spectroscopy from the conclusion of week one supports this theory. The presence of a carbonyl
group, with an intensity of 72.40%, and no measurable formation of alcohol were observed. The
oxidation of 2 methyl 4 heptanol can neither be deemed a success, nor a failure, due to it not
existing in any measurable rate within our final product from week one. However, the mixture
still underwent the oxidation process in an attempt to produce any possibility of the desired
product. Using IR spectroscopy, the resulting data from the oxidation appeared very similar to
that of the IR spectroscopy data from week one, with a slightly lower intensity of the carbonyl
group at 66.89%. The GC performed on the final product mixture revealed this carbonyl group to
be an aldehyde, as previously

The feeding of the prisoners was a major issue in the concentration camps during the holocaust. The
jewish prisoners were fed three times a day in the concentration camps, those three times were
morning, noon, and evening. (living conditions, labor and executions) It wasn t the amount of
food given a day that was an issue the nutritional value that the Nazis had for the concentration

gave the ones who engaged in hard labor one thousand seven hundred calories per day. (living

Covert Monitoring Of Private Communications
Shortly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the US Patriot Act granted was enacted
granting wide legal authority to the intelligence community as a defensive measure against future
terrorist attacks. Among those new powers, included in Article 215, is the right to obtain business
records, while imposing a gag order on the party holding those records. This law remains the
foundation upon which the current NSA phone metadata collection campaign is operated. In
October 2001, President Bush ordered the National Security Agency to commence covert
monitoring of private communications through the nation s telephone companies without the
requisite FISA warrants. The agency began surveilling the Internet for emails, financial data, and
voice messaging on belief that such metadata was not constitutionally protected. In effect, by
penetrating the Internet for text and the parallel Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) for
voice, the NSA had gained access to much of the world s telecommunications. At the end of Bush
s term in 2008, Congress had enacted laws that not only retrospectively legalized these programs,
but also prepared the way for NSA surveillance to grow unchecked. Rather than restrain the agency,

Chapter 4 Explaining Globalization
Scholte briefly examines six differing theoretical approaches to explaining globalization what are
they? What is the central theme of each?
Liberalisms Liberalist position globalization is, at the most elementary level, a result of natural
human desires for economic welfare and political liberty. As such, increased transplanetary
connectivity is ultimately derived from human drives to maximize material well being (through
markets) and to exercise basic freedoms (as guaranteed by publicly accountable government). For
liberalists globalization is an outcome of people s strivings to escape poverty as well as to achieve
civil and political rights. On a liberalist account it is inherent in market ... Show more content on

In these cases, transplanetary connectivity is said to have arisen because of the way that people
have mentally constructed the social world with symbols, language, interpretation, and so on. From
ideational perspectives, globalization has resulted from particular forms and dynamics of
consciousness. For methodological idealists, patterns of production and governance are second
order structures that derive from deeper cultural and socio psychological forces. Such accounts of
globalization have come especially from the fields of Anthropology, Humanities, Media Studies,
and Sociology, although idealist arguments have also influenced some researchers in Geography,
Politics and even Business Studies. One type of ideational explanation is constructivism, an
approach that has been popular particularly since the 1990s among International Studies scholars in
North America and Western Europe who wish to develop an alternative perspective to liberalism
and political realism. As the theory s name suggests, constructivism concentrates on the ways that
social actors construct their world: both within their own minds and through inter subjective

Frederick Douglass Life As An Abolitionist
Frederick Douglass is a well known and famous intellectual, writer, activist, public speaker, and
abolitionist. He was born on a Maryland Plantation in the early 1800 s, and died in 1895. He
wrote many autobiographies detailing the struggles of slavery and his life as an abolitionist, he
spoke out against the racist south, he spoke and wrote for his own antislavery newspaper, and he
regularly attended and held antislavery conferences and meetings. He was a very accomplished
man with a very interesting life. Frederick Douglass was born in 1818, in Talbot County,
Maryland. His exact birthdate is unknown, but later in his life he began celebrating it on the 14th

I admire him for all of his work, whether it be speaking or writing. I also admire his bravery and
courage to rise up against society, and try to fix what was wrong with it, even in a time when
many would not listen to him or his ideas.. I feel that he accomplished many important things,
but nothing as crucial as his first autobiography and its later edits. The autobiography really
kicked off his epic and storied career, and caused him to be very well known and famous.
Douglass s greatest lasting impact was his massive dent he made in the slavery and inequality
wall. He was one of the first and most influential activists, and the work he did accomplished
monumental things. It also paved the way for other great abolitionists, and caused them to work
harder for the cause they believed in, even though it was a hard fight. He influenced America

Advantages And Disadvantages Of WLAN
A wireless local area network (WLAN) is a wireless distribution method that uses high frequency
radio waves to connect two or more gadgets. It allows users to communicate between network
enabled devices within and around the coverage area.
More and more organizations are spending on WLAN because it has become a mission critical
component of the corporate network. One of the main benefit that WLAN offers is the
convenience, it allows the home and corporate users to access network resources from anywhere
without any cable installation. It provides a non stop access to business systems in public places
as well as in areas where it is difficult to install cables like conference rooms, warehouses and
manufacturing floors. As it provides mobility so the companies deploying WLAN increase its
productivity level and that of its employees. Employees remain in constant touch and they can

Wireless networking signals are also susceptible to interference from lights and electronic
devices as wireless networks use radio signals for transmission. Then there is the issue of
stability, because of the interference caused by different electronic devices, often the wireless
connection gets lost or distorted. Although the transmission range of a common 802.11g
network is on the order of tens of meters and is quite sufficient for a typical home but it is not
sufficient for a large setup. In order to increase the range, additional equipment/access points and
repeaters will have to be developed and thus the cost will further go up. The transmission speed
of wireless networks is slow as compared to the slowest common wired networks. Faster options
like gigabit Ethernet are available via cables and are being deployed in specialized environments
where the throughput of a wired network is

Film Analysis Of Two Cars One Night
The films Two cars one night and Boy directed by Taika Waititi are based in New Zealand. Two
cars one night is a short film and the idea for the movie Boy was derived from it. Taika Waititi
uses the film aspects of light and dark lighting and symbolism to portray the themes and his style of
directing through his movie Boy and his short filmtwo cars one night. Waititi uses the lens of a
child to portray what is happening throughout the movie plot to show the lasting moments in
childhood. As a director Taika Waititi expresses his concerns of viewing through the lens of
innocence or a child. He explains that what being creative is about having fun and looking at life

The lighting in this point in the film almost camouflages the car as it is pitch black at nighttime.
It enables the audience to only see the car s window and the faces inside the car. This gives the
audience a feeling of mystery as they re trying to work out who is inside the car. Waititi uses this
aspect as well in his other film, Two Cars One Night. He uses the lightning to control the audience s
emotions around who in what cars. By weaving the dark lightning around.
Set in 1984 The short film, Two cars one night utilizes the filming aspect of lightand dark lighting
to the contrast between the two cars with children in a pub car park. The long shot exhibited in
the scene gives the picture of the two cars in the car parking lot while the adults are inside the
pub. It shows the aspect of safety and danger for the children as they wait for their parents to
come out from inside of the bar and pub. It also signifies the familiar and unknown as the
children explore with their eyes what is around them. Taika uses the aspect of light and dark light
to symbolize danger and create tension within this scene because as an audience we associate
nighttime with being unsafe for children, and he uses the dark light and children in this scene to
create a sense of danger. An example of this is when the car the two Boys are in is captured sitting
still while the surrounding everything is moving, such as the people and the dark night sky. It
portrays the darkness

One Ordinary Day With Wallets Short Story
One Ordinary Day, with Wallets Mr. Johnson put on his uncomfortable shoes and then trudged out
into the way to bright and shiny morning sunshine. He was not in the best of moods, so when he
stopped at a newspaper stand to pick up his daily morning newspaper, he spoke angrily to the
salesperson to hurry up. When another man came to buy a paper, Mr. Johnson quickly stole his
walletand hid it in a secret pocket in his jacket. Then he acted extremely apologetic when the man
couldn t find it and even paid the 60 cents for the paper, so as to not seem suspicious. When he
had walked a few blocks away from the newspaper stand Mr. Johnson hunched over some and
began to walk slowly. He arrived at a crosswalk and then started to painfully cross it. A naive
woman quickly ran up and said Would you like me to assist you, sir?
Mr. Johnson eyed the expensive looking dress and shoes the lady was wearing and replied Yes,
thank you, it is so kind of you to aid me.
As they reached the sidewalk the lady said Where are you headed? Oh, just simply down the street
to the drugstore to buy myself some heart medication. Mr. Johnson said.
The woman said, Well, then I ll walk you there.
Mr. Johnson then replied Oh that won t be necessary, but I appreciate your kindness in helping me
across the street. Then he swiftly and sneakily stole her wallet from her purse and rushed away.
She was dumbfounded about how he was suddenly able to walk fast, but simply shrugged it off
and went about her day, not knowing that her wallet was gone until it was too late. Mr. Johnson
then headed to a hot dog cart, along the way pickpocketing three more wallets off of rich looking
businessmen. When he got there he asked for a hot dog with mustard. The man gave him one
and just as Mr. Johnson was about to take a bite, he accidentally dropped it. The man at the cart
said Oh sir, I m so sorry, let me fetch you another one. Mr. Johnson sweetly replied Thank you so
much, I am so glad that there are people like you in the world. The man gave him another hot dog

What Is The Theme Of The Jon Lenin Xperience
The Jon Lennin Xperience remains as my personal most loved short story in the collection Pee on
Water by Rachel B. Glaser. In the story, the principle character Jason is the brother of a girl who
got wealthy by making a prevalent phone app called Fun Face. It is not all that difficult to believe
subtle element reflecting the ridiculousness of the Internet age in which we have ended up living.
At the same time Jason thinks that it difficult to partake in video games, and to a conceivably
considerably more noteworthy degree, in life itself. That is, until he finds the game called Jon

Was Haman Hanged Or Impaled In The Book Of Esther Analysis
Was Haman Hanged or Impaled in the Book of Esther?
As part of the battle between Mordecai (the hero) and Haman (the villain), Haman plans Mordecai s
death, but in the end the instrument of death is turned on Haman himself.
According to the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), Haman s wife suggested (verse 5:14)
that a gallows fifty cubits [seventy five to eighty feet] high be made ... to have Mordecai hanged on
it.
The Jewish Publication Society of America Version (JPS).
translation offers instead, Let a stake be put up ... to have Mordecai impaled on it. Verse 7:10
details the plot reversal: The King s men either hanged Haman on the gallows (NRSV) or impaled
Haman on the stake (JPS).
Which is it? Was it a gallows or stake? And was Haman hanged or impaled?
King James Version (KJV), the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) and the New American
Standard (NAS) render the beginning of the verse the same: So, they hanged Haman on the
gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. However, consider the NIV s take on the text:
So, they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai. (and to be fair, the NRSV
contains a note that it should be rendered on a tree by impalement )
Clearly, hanging by the neck until dead and being shoved on a sharpened, wide perimeter stick are
two (2) separate ways of dying.
Where does the discrepancy come from?
There are two (2) questions here, as there always are with matters of translation.
1.The first is what the original Hebrew means.
2.The second is how best to say that in English.
Let s look at the Hebrew to examine the two (2) words in dispute.
Gallows (KJV)/Pole(NIV)
1.The Hebrew word is ets and it is the most often translated in the Bible as tree, piece of wood, or
pole.
2.The only examples of the word being translated as gallows appear in The Book of Esther
Hanged (KJV)/Impaled(NIV)
1.The Hebrew word talah is used here and is the source of complexity in interpreting the image of
death.
2.The word translates most often in the Bible to mean suspend or hang, and there are numerous
examples of people hung on ets throughout the OT: Genesis 40:19, Deuteronomy 21:22, Joshua
8:29 and 10:20, 1 Samuel 31:10, and 2 Samuel

Black Harvest By Bob Connolly And Robin Anderson
The 1992 film Black Harvest was directed and produced by Bob Connolly and Robin Anderson.
Filmed in the highlands of Papua, New Guinea, it follows a half white, half African man Joe
Leahy attempting to manage a coffee plantation that he collectively owns with the local Ganiga
tribe. Leahy employs Ganiga tribesmen and women, giving them 40% of the earnings while he
receives 60%. During the film it is learned that coffee prices have plummeted, giving Leahy no
choice but to cut wages and face the tribes people s response.
The film portrays the tragedy within attempting to find cohesion in two completely opposing
lifestyles, as one is seemingly attempting to overpower the other. While Joe Leahy represents the
colonial businessman, his Ganiga partners, enthralled in their traditions and choosing to stay
devoted to their duties in local tribal warfare, remain rooted in a lifestyle much different than that
of Joe Leahy. Black Harvest evokes an understanding of the implications of colonialism that can be
most deeply seen through the montage of many short scenes, with few moments of long held
interview type shots. As the sound of the film is completely diegetic, everything that is heard is in
direct correlation with what is being filmed, this being broken only once at the end of the film,
where sobs can be heard from a woman aside from what is in direct camera view, symbolic of the
film s downtrodden conclusion.
The issue of Leahy s attempt to overpower the Ganiga tribe s

Science Act Hypothesis

and the contents of this bill, then discuss the discrepancies that I have found by comparing the
definition of terms provided from its common definition, I will also the identify the validity of some
arguments provided in this bill, and discern its inconvenience.
The Missouri House Bill No. 911 or also known as the Missouri Standard Science Act was a
legislation introduced in 2003 by the former Missouri Representative Robert Wayne Cooper from
district 155. This bill suggests that the science instructions regarding evolution and intelligent design
must be taught equally in public elementary and secondary schools. It also recommends a series of

Most of the sentences can easily be refutable by means of showing evidence of natural selection
and just by simply comparing the definition provided in this bill to its common or standard
definition. Some of its definition was redefined in favor of the bill s request for equality, and the
use of the words faith based philosophical beliefs and non verifiable does not conform to science.
I believe that there is no idea of faith in science. The purpose of science is to study the natural
world and base their findings on data, facts, and evidence, not by faith. In addition, the use of non
verifiable on the bill suggests that if a scientist didn t see any type of discoveries with their own
eyes, then it is not verifiable. This suggests that any theories such as the Big Bang and evolution is
not verifiable. The biggest issue with this term is that by the same definition, intelligent design is
also not verifiable. Missouri Standard Science Act provides an alternative fact where it redefines
science, disregards it and requires the common definition of science not to be taught. This leads to
fallacious assumptions and conclusions about science, its functions, and how it must be

Cause And Effect Of Titanic
Introduction Iceberg right ahead! That one of the most unforgettable quotes from the movie,
Titanic . After seeing that movie for the first time I found the Titanic and her famous story, I found
the Titanic and very fascinating. Titanic is one of the greatest known maritime disasters in history
to this day. She was the grandest, most technologically advanced ship, and safest ship of her time.
As you read this report, you will be presented some effects Titanic had on things during her time
period as well as in the present that most people may not know about.
Body of Research During the time of her construction, Titanic was designed to be the largest,
grandest, safest, and most technologically advanced ship during her time. Her designers and
engineers set out to build a class of ocean liners that could compete against White Star Line s rival
company, Cunard. However, when Titanic, the second of her sister ships sunk on her maiden
voyage, it shook the world and it had a major impact on the world and its people. One of the main
effects was the effect on safety regulations. Titanic only carried enough lifeboats to sustain roughly
half of the passengers and crew on board. At the time, Titanic actually exceeded the amount of the
lifeboats required by the British Board of Trade regulations by 10 percent.
Although there was room on deck for twice as many lifeboats, the Titanic carried lifeboats for
just over half of the passengers and crew on board. The designer of the Titanic had allowed room
on deck for two rows of lifeboats, but one row was removed before the voyage began to make the
deck more aesthetically pleasing [Rogers and others, 1998]. With outdated British Board of Trade
regulations, the Titanic s twenty lifeboats actually exceeded requirements by 10 percent capacity
[Refrigerator, 1998].
(Vicki Bassett, par. 21)
After Titanic s disaster, the new safety regulations required all ships to carry enough lifeboats to
sustain all of the passengers and crew aboard the ship. Moreover, the regulations also specify that
the lifeboats had to carry items such as oars, food, drinks, compasses, etc. Following the increase in
lifeboats, a mandatory use of wireless

The Economic Crisis And The Arms Race
The economic crisis and the Arms Race were the major reasons of the collapse of the Soviet Union
and the fall had a big impact on today s politics. The Soviet Union was formed in 1922. It consisted
of 15 Soviet Republics (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belorussia, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirgizia,
Latvia, Lithuania, Moldavia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan). The main
ideologies were communism and Socialism. One of the most prominent leaders of the Union was
Joseph Stalin. The Soviet Unionwas one of the leading empires in the world at that period of time.
The Communism is the ideology that replaces private property with public ownership and
individual needs are replaced by collective one. It is the advanced form of Socialism. In the 1970
s and 1980 s The Soviet Union was very stable. It seemingly was strong politically and was
acquiring even greater power and influence. But in reality there were many economic problems
for the Soviet Empire. The central pillar of Soviet Economy was central planning and subsequent
lack of individual creativity, lack of incentives for increased productivity. According to Soviet
worker, the government pretended that they paid people and people pretended that they worked.
The system was based on lies, it seemingly was successful but in reality it was failing. The Soviet
Union had other, more important problems which led to the economic crisis. 70% of the industrial
output of the Soviet Union was

Carnival s value proposition was to be a cheaper alternative to land vacations at all inclusive resorts

Television, A Modern Media Essay
Television, a telecommunication medium some may not survive without. Today s generation may
refer to television as a technological norm; delusional of a world where television was non existent.
Notably, television unites the nation through local or world events, politics, education, and
entertainment. Philo Farnsworth, Father of Television, invented the television; the electronic
transmission of fixed or mobile images. Furthermore, Farnsworth s invention influenced a new form
of media. Young Farnsworth s scientific, technological imagination as well as, competitive battle
with a major league corporation, RCA, enticed the growth of one of the most popular media
mediums; television.
One illustrious instrument that advanced media configuration is Farnsworth s ambitious
background. Philo Farnsworth, innovator at heart, was born August 19, 1906 in Beaver, Utah.
Young Farnsworth grew up on a farmhouse in Rigby, Idaho. While tending to daily agricultural
responsibilities on the farm, Farnsworth fantasized about conveying images through electrical
power. He said he had realized seven years earlier, while plowing a field on his family s farm,
that an image could be scanned onto a picture tube row by row ( Elma Gardner Farnsworth, 98;
Helped Husband Develop TV, 2006). Likewise, Farnsworth created electrical improvements to
household appliances which became a favored pastime. According to Godfrey (2004), By age 12,

Literary Analysis Of A Personal Narrative In Frank...
Kelley Simon s anecdote, Frank Sinatra s Gum, is a literacy narrative about an outcast teenage girl
s personal account of her riveting interview with the one and only Frank Sinatra. The narrative
illustrates Simon s internal struggle over how to successfully become part of a school clique of
girls and her external struggle with Frank Sinatra. Her motivation for the interview, her self
identity, and her ultimate decision all play a part in her methods. She uses rhetorical devices
throughout the autobiographical sketch of Sinatra that help portray her true feelings. Simon s
exaggerated use of imagery and sensory language, parallelism, and the modes of persuasion all
dramatize the main focus in distinguishing between the allusion of an image and reality. In the
beginning of the article, the author utilizes parallelism to compare her own father to Frank
Sinatra. She claims that she liked how [Sinatra] was Sicilian as many of [her] father s friends and
clients were (Simon 1). However, Simon does admit that he was a pug like Frankie in that both
were unreasonable, illogical, and self centered (Simon 1). Both resorted to a physical means in
order to resolve their differences. Sinatra reminds Simon of her father, and in such a way that
allows her to admire him while she struggles with her uncertainty on whether or not she likes him.
Simon uses descriptive imagery and sensory language to allow the reader a vicarious experience.

The Invention Of The Dye Industry
During WWII there were many advancements in modern weaponry, the production of larger
weapons and faster planes allowed for devastation across the globe. Many of these weapons were
very effective and while the war trudged on as did the new technology that arose from the hellish
time. German forces, at this time, were on the frontlines in trenches as they tried to push back
British and French troops. Although Germany s armies were strong they still struggled to advance
on the British and French troops. Meanwhile in Germany, the dye industry was steadily producing
economic growth but, the German army had other plans. These plans would eventually change the
dynamic of war itself.
It was 1915, German forces grew tired and started to look for other ways to advance on British
and French troops. As stated before the dye industry was a great weapon. Except it wasn t the dye
that was used but a chemical used to create the dye, chlorine. The German army filled canisters of
chlorine and bought them to the battlefield. As they opened the canisters yellowish gas flowed
from the metal cases directly toward two French regiments. The French regiments watched as this
gas flowed toward them, before they knew it the gas had reached them. One by one French
soldiers started choking on the gas as their lungs filled with chlorine. As the gas melted the tissues
of their lungs French troops fell, all of them. Two French divisions were destroyed, in no time the

given me information on strategies to develop effective lesson plans in which will support my
students to be fully engaged with the activities provided in a classroom environment. Instructional
design also supports ideas on planning lessons for students with diverse and cultural needs for all
learners. The eight learning outcome supported ideas for my students to become more familiar with

Contemporary Issues In Social Policy
Contemporary Issues in Social Policy
By Nazia Howell
October 2017
Social policy refers to the policies used by government for welfare and social protection (Spicker,
P.) that are usually made by central Government and implemented by local authorities to tackle
current social issues such as poverty and racism. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have now
devolved and have their own laws and legislations on several issues.
This essay will explore three contemporary issues in relation to social policy, whilst supporting
these issues with legislation and economic context for each issue.
The three issues that will be explored are: Welfare, Health and Pensions. Defining social policy, and
understanding social policy becomes imperative, to enable understanding of the contemporary
issues within it.
Social policy was introduced in the early 19th Century, post war. At this time, William Beveridge
introduced the idea of a Welfare Stateto address poverty. He released a report for social reform
known as the five giants within society: squalor, disease, ignorance, idleness and want. The
welfare state brought many positive improvements in Britain and Government passed reforms to
address the poverty levels, introducing cradle to grave support. The National Health Service was
set up which gave free health care to all and laws and Acts were put in place to help the young,
the old, the sick the unemployed and the working class in times of need. The five issues raised by

Etruscan Influence Of Roman Architecture
With Etruscan influence, the Romans began building with enthusiasm, combining columns, arches
and various styles of vaults into their homes, temples and Colosseum. Although the Romans impact
on architecture spread throughout Europe and the United States, nothing is as magnificent as the
Romans development of concreteand its use for constructing walls, theaters and those beautifully
graceful bridges.
Poor and middle class society occupied 3 4 storey, rundown apartments called insulae, which had
extremely close living quarters and were unsafe due to their unsanitary conditions and haphazard
construction. Decimus Iunius Iuvenalis, known to us as Juvenal , was a satirical poet who
eloquently described the life in an insula as follows: We live in a city supported mostly by slender
props, which is how the bailiff patches cracks in old walls, telling the resident to sleep peacefully
under roofs ready to fall down around them . (Bird, 2016) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Global Assessment of Biodiversity and the Anthropogenic...
The global assessment of biodiversity and the anthropogenic impacts on them should be an urgent
priority for conservation biologists. Though overhunting, introduced species, habitat destruction,
trophic cascades and climate change (evil quintet) are known to be the potential anthropogenic
threats that are likely to drive extinctions in the future (Diamond 1984, Brook et al. 2008), more
frequently, conservation biologists have focused their attention on visible threats like habitat
destruction, in comparison with invisible threats like overhunting (Galetti Dirzo 2013). Traditional
biodiversity assessments often ignore huntingpressure though they are aware of its presence, or
classify into ways (e.g., heavy, moderate or low hunting) that are unsuitable for auditing by other
researchers (Galetti Dirzo 2013). For example, what might be classified as heavy hunting pressure
by one biologist can be classified as low hunting pressure by another. Moreover, also within the
hunting classifications of a biologist, what is the difference between heavy, moderate and low
hunting pressure? The use of different standards makes auditing of hunting pressure difficult. Here
we ask how to measure the intensity of hunting pressure. Knowing this answer will help us better
understand the effects of hunting on biodiversity loss and set conservation priorities more
efficiently. Flight initiation distance (FID) is the distance between prey and the predator/hunter
when animal begins to flee. If

Parent Child Relationship in Greek Mythology Essay
It is inferred that the parents should take care of their children and have their best interest at heart.
This however, is not the case in Greek and Roman mythology. The killing of ones own children, or
filicide, was not viewed as negative upon in their era. The contemporary times contrast with the
ancient Greek and Roman s because it was justified to use any means necessary to obtain a higher
status. The Greeks and Romans valued keeping a high social reputation and having respect for
those of great power. The motherly union between their children conflict with the reality that the
father strives to retain or gain control. These circumstances cause a tense bond between the
members of the family. The strained parent to child relationship in... Show more content on

Knowing that having the kingdom would make his name great throughout the nation, Pelias
struggled to keep it however way possible. This patriarchal love for control in turn leads to a
discord of the family, especially between the child and father. In contrast to the father, the mother
had a connection with their children, often leading to an overthrow of the husband. This
materialistic love is easily shown in the myth of Demeter and Persephone. The joy of Demeter s
eternal lifetime was her daughter, Persephone, whom she had borne to Zeus ( Rosenberg Demeter
94). After Persephone was taken away, Demeter became infuriated and even withdrew her life
sustaining powers,.. she broke the plows, killed oxen, and caused the earth to shrivel ( Rosenberg
Demeter 96). Seen from Demeter s reaction to the situation, the bond between mother and child was
very strong compared to that of the father. When Persephone returns, she takes comfort in her
mother rather than her father. Children usually took the mother s side and went against their father
s will. In the creation myth of the Greeks, there were two generations in which the mother wanted
to protect her children from the grasps of the father. Gaea was afraid of what Uranus would do to
their fearful children, and sought to protect them ( Rosenberg Creation 86). The wives of Cronus
and Uranus both schemed the overthrow of their husbands,

Tiziano Titian Research Paper
Titian (Tiziano Vecellio) was born in Pieve di Cadore, a small town at the foot of the Dolomites
on the Venetian side of the Alps. The Vecellio s had been based in Cadore since the 14th century.
Titian s father, Gregorio, was a military man. His older brother Francesco was also a painter.
There is still no documentary evidence of Titian s exact date of birth, but contemporary sources
and his early stylistic development suggest that he was born around 1490. Titian was a painter
who painted famous paintings of religious beliefs such as Sacred and Profane Love and Venus of
Urbino which were lost in fire but are safe on the internet. Titian trained under two other seminal

This mythology inspired work was just one of several commissioned by Alfonso I d Este, duke
of Ferrara. Titian managed to cultivate a broad range of royal patrons during his career,
including King Philip II of Spain and Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Titian s Venetian home
was a mecca for many of the community s artistic types. He had an especially close friendship
with writer Pietro Aretino. Aretino is said to have helped Titian get some of his commissions.
Sculptor and architect Jacopo Sansovino was another frequent visitor. Over the years, Titian
created portraits of leading figures of the day. He painted two works featuring Pope Paul III
between 1545 and 46, and spent six months living at the Vatican while making these paintings. In
1548, he traveled to the court of Charles V, where he painted his portrait as well. In his later
career, Titian focused more on religious and mythological works. For Spain s Philip II, he painted
Venus and Adonis (c. 1554), a piece inspired by Ovid s Metamorphoses that shows the goddess
Venus trying in vain to hold on to her beloved Adonis. Titian again explored his fascination with
the Roman goddess of love in Venus and the Lute Player

The front line workers in manufacturing, production, and sales of the auto industry generally
require minimal education and receive on the job skill training. These workers may have a high
school diploma and great variance in skill level for manufacturing and sales. They will receive the
training needed on the job and their wages will not greatly vary; therefore, the effect of changes in
training and wages for those workers of the industry would be considered minimal in changes to the
supply curve. For this group, advances in technology would have a greater impact. In reviewing the
labor supply for the business segment of the automobile industry such as business management,
engineering, and marketing, this is the population of the industry which must: understand and keep
track of changing consumer demands, understand how to maximize opportunity for growth, how to
forecast, how to market, and be innovative in design and features of automobiles as technology
continues to advance and the market remains competitive. According to the Consumer Population
Survey (CPS), in 2011 the U.S. Labor Force, age 25 and older, with only a high school education

Tesla has several key drivers of differentiation, which makes the company occupy a unique position
in the market (Fig 5). Some key skills that have allowed Tesla to enjoy its competitive advantage
are: * Technology amp; Innovation Development: Its focus has allowed the company to move faster
and create groundbreaking ideas in EV technology. The list of patents is extensive (Fig 6). * Human
Resources Management: Tesla is constantly aiming at recruiting and working with the best talents
within the technology industry to achieve superior product development. * Company s culture:
Unlike most companies, Tesla is still being funded by its investors, betting on establishing a new
propulsion standard and making profits in the long run. Without the support of its CEO Elon Musk,
this most probably would not have been possible.
Tesla s differentiation strategy will most probably be sustainable in the long run, but only if the
company keeps its essence of innovation. Although a differentiation strategy is harder to replicate
than a cost advantage strategy, Tesla needs to innovate and improve their products or other
competitors will find ways to replicate their products, even more now that Tesla released its
patents. Tesla has already gained a reputation and position in the global market, the key for
sustainability is how they manage to exploit and grow based on their

Can employee morale and productivity be boosted in the work place through various program
incentives? I am proposing that a process be introduced which recognizes individual as well as team
contributions through other means. It has been noted in several readings and throughout companies
that employees with high morale are more productive than those unhappy counterparts. This is also
a way to reduce the cost associated with recruiting and training of new employees replacing those
who lack productivity and morale.
The basic principles of human motivation are a constant. Many employees in companies
throughout pride themselves on a new school approach to employee satisfaction issues. Years ago
(and still for some) the idea of if you don t like it than quit still exist but through the use of the
items identified, that approach wont be necessary. An overwhelming number of surveyed
employees have the thought that this way still exist at many companies. To gain a better
understanding of how to motivate employees to boost morale, management must first understand
the basic human needs associated. Many of the needs are best represented by Maslow s Hierarchy
of Needs Pyramid.
Many employers achieve satisfying the first level of needs identified as the physiological through
compensation. The income earned by employee is what is used to take care of needs such as food,
shelter, utilities

Frank Sinatra Howard Cosell, a legendary commentator, spoke words about this legendary man that

During the 50 s and early 60 s Sinatra remained the top seller in the album market. He worked
with everyone from his early inspiration Bing Crosby to young rock stars such as Quincy Jones
and Elvis Presley. Besides from being an excellent singer, Frank could act. He starred in such
films as The Man with the Golden Arm, Suddenly, and one of his greatest films Guys and Dolls.
MGM said he (Frank) was so skinny, he wouldn t throw a shadow. I told them he would throw

He won an Academy Award in Best Supporting Actor for the role of Maggio in movie From Here

Essay about Feminism and Changing Perceptions of Motherhood
Societal perceptions of motherhood in North America have changed drastically over the last century
and continue to change. Due to prescribed traditional gender roles, the concept of motherhood has
historically been latent in the concept womanhood, in that a woman s ability to reproduce was seen
to be an inherent part of her identity. Thus there existed societal pressures not only for women to
become mothers, but to fit into the impossible standard of being the perfect mother. However, as the
feminist movement gained more ground and women were increasingly incorporated into the
workforce, these traditional views of genderroles and in turn motherhood were challenged. As the
family dynamics that exist today are much more diverse, what... Show more content on

order to divert the dialogue away from the real issues such as affordable health care, quality

as, epilepsy, colitis, asthma, ulcers, arthritis, anorexia nervosa, and a multitude of more severe
problems in children (207). However, they argue that it is now accepted that these disorders are in

portrays a universal kind of woman white, affluent, and heterosexual ignoring the fact that there are
many different kinds of mothers of all backgrounds, sexualities, and economic statuses which can
make those who are not reflected as the average mother, feel inadequate. The authors further argue
that these messages that working mothers are harming their children are what discourage women
from economic participation and achievement and can have a negative impact on a mother s
perception of herself which in turn can affect her performance as a parent. It seems that the

Themes Of Osmosis Jones Monomyth
Osmosis Jones and the Monomyth Osmosis Jones tells the story of a white blood cell who plays
the role of a policeman inside a man named Frank. Teamwork is the central theme in Osmosis
Jones, and is developed through the monomyth. The monomyth or hero s journey shows the steps
that most movies go through, for example, The Matrix, Harry Potter, and Hunger Games. Most of
these stories pass through twelve specific steps. According to Joseph Campbell, in his book, The
Hero With a Thousand Faces, The monomyth is a structure that is common in many heroic stories,
an outline that has existed for millennia. This story follows the main steps within the monomyth,
while each step helps strengthen the theme. Osmosis Jones, the main protagonist, lives his
everyday life as a rebellious germ policeman in the mouth. The first step of the monomyth, or his
call to adventure is when Frank, the body he is trying to protect, contracts a deadly virus named
Thrax. Thinking Thrax was just a common coldFrank consumes a pill called Drixenol. Drixenol,
also known as Drix, befriends Jones as they are assigned partners on the cold case. Drix helps
fulfill the second step of the monomyth, and becomes Jones assistance. This is where the two
join as one and become a team. Although Jones and Drix go through a lot of small trials their
first big trial, and the third step of the monomyth, is their encounter with Thrax in the nose.
While in Franks nose Thrax turns the pressure pods up which destroys all the walls in his nostril.
This causes a runny nose which Jones and Drix struggle to contain. After the nose incident Jones
and Drix work together to extract evidence from the old know it all chicken pox influenza. With
Jones smooth talking and Drix s big gun they use teamwork to beat the truth out of the old timer.
Knowing all about Thrax they set off to find and defeat the menacing virus. Finally, they find
Thrax at a new club on Franks forehead named The Zit. As they listen in on Thrax s plan to kill
Frank within forty eight hours they are discovered. Through teamwork they destroy The Zit and all
the germs within it including Thrax, or so they think. Thrax miraculously survives the explosion
and moves forward with his plan to kill Frank.

  • 2. Hydraulic Jump Experiment Essay Hydraulic Jump Experiment SUMMARY The Objective of this experiment is to observe the flow patterns and behaviour of the water before after the jump Also to quantify the energy lost due to a hydraulic jump. The observed and theoretical ratios of upstream and downstream depths will be compared, this will show the limitations to purely theoretical analysis. The experiment showed that a hydraulic jump occurs when when liquid at high velocity discharges into a zone of lower velocity, a rather abrupt rise occurs in the liquid surface. The rapidly flowing liquid is abruptly slowed and increases in height. The results clearly show the limitations of purely theoretical and purely experimental analysis due to the range of ... Hydraulic jump occurs when the supercritical flow occurs in a channel of which normal flow condition is subcritical. h2/h1 = ВЅ (в€ љ(1+8F12 ) 1)(4) The Froude number is calculated using this equation: F1 = в€ љ(q2/gh12)(5) The hydraulic jump, also known as standing wave, is a rapid transition from supercritical flow to subcritical flow. The transition is generally a turbulent process with a significant energy loss(∆E). that can not be neglected. A hydraulic jump is commonly used to dissipate energy, and reduce the downstream velocity. To calculate the specific energy at the two separate heights this equation is used: E = h1 + q2/2gh12(6) The total energy loss can be derived as О”E = E1 E2(7) To find the height of the jump between the smallest and largest heights: О”h = h2 h1(8) Finally, the length of the hydraulic jump is given by:

  • 5. Examples Of Political Antisemitism Antisemitism is broken down into two areas both modern antisemitism, and political antisemitism, but even before modern antisemitism and political antisemitism there was traditional antisemitism which was spun off of Christian anti Judaism. The traditional way was created because Christians believed the jewish people needed to be punished or reprimanded because of their rejection for Jesus Christ as the Messiah, but also for economic misbehavior and in some cases people even believed the jewish people had desire to control the world and this was the myth of the jews. The hatred was focused the most on the stereotype of the Jew and not necessarily the people who lived within authentic Jewish communities. Traditional antisemitismcan be based... Turning the government away from the real problems in the political realm, and toward the wrong hatred is now thought to be one of the worst ideas in international history. • 7. Summary 2008 Financial Crisis The financial crisis began in early 2006 when the subprime mortgage market in the U.S. began to display an increasing rate of mortgage defaults. These defaults lead, in late 2006, to a decline in US housing prices after nearly a decade of exceptionally high growth. Many Americans watched as their primary source of wealth become increasingly devalued. By late 2007, the prime mortgage markets were showing higher than normal default rates as well. Collateralized Mortgage Obligations (CMOs), a type of collateralized debt obligations (CDOs), allowed these problems to spread from the mortgage market to other sectors of the economy, having especially widespread effects on financial markets as a whole. CMOs were mortgage backed securities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These liquidity problems turned to insolvency in September of 2008, when private lending froze completely in a number of important credit markets, such as commercial paper. As a result, non financial businesses were unable to get access to the financing they required to function normally, leading to problems in the real economy. The real economy began to exhibit problems related to the financial crisis as early as March 2006, when investment expenditure on residential structures began to decline. In early 2008, this decline spread to investment in business equipment and consumer spending on durable goods. It wasn t until the summer of 2008 that consumer spending broadly and GDP began falling, signs of a recession. (In December 2008, the National Bureau of Economic Research, official arbiter of business cycles dated the formal beginning of the recession as December 2007.) While the public had been concerned about recession for much of the year, it wasn t until the fall that the economy began to decline at more than a 6% annual rate. Congress responded by passing the TARP plan to assist failing financial institutions. This plan was meant to decrease the severity of the recession by treating its cause: the financial crisis. • 8. My Aunt Julie Is One Of The Most Amazing, Sweet, And... My aunt Julie is one of the most amazing, sweet, and hilarious people I have ever met. She has the most beautiful and kind soul. She was also born with a severe mental and physical handicap called Cerebral Palsy. It is a condition that occurs when the brain hasn t completely developed at birth, in Julie s case she was born prematurely and was also a twin, making her even smaller and more frail at birth. Julie was born not breathing and the doctors couldn t get her to start breathing for 5 minutes after she was born. She is now in her early fifties, but only has the mental capability of a 78 year old child. She has been in a wheelchair for her whole life and never even taken one step, she also has very minimal control of her arms and hands. Julie also has a very hard time controlling her temper and her emotions, I can only assume that it is because she feels as though she is trapped in her own body and will never be able to get out of it and feel free. Julie has this crazy love for Nascar and has never missed watching a race. Everyone has their little obsessions, for my six year old nephew it is toy cars, my older brother it is playing the guitar, for me it is Cadbury Eggs, but for Julie it is Nascar races and the Nascar driver Dale Earnhardt JR. In 2013 my mom and I had decided to take Julie to go see the Daytona 500 in Daytona Florida. This was such a huge deal for Julie because she had never been out of the state of Utah let alone on a plane halfway across the country, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 9. Similarities Between 1984 And Anthem Fear in Equality and Winston Comparison Essay There are many reasons for books to be banned in countries. The books 1984 and Anthem is both banned in countries for being a dystopian novel. These books have a lot of similarities, but the thing that separates them is that their differences. They differ by three simple questions, the first question is what the main character fears. The second question is why does the government fear change? The third and final question is what is going to happen to the peoples who push the change that the government fears? In 1984, the main character, Winston becomes aware of the past of how the party came into the party and he tries to stop the party from having any more power. In Anthem the main character, named Equality, creates an invention known as the light bulb and he gets shut down for his invention and he gets cast out. The main character in both books has to be afraid of something due to the fact that they are always being watched, but in different ways. • 10. Ancient Kingship and Rulers Essay Kings and rulers started to emerge as soon as people moved away from living in tribes. This was the case with the Jews when they have decided to unite under one ruler. However, long before them the first empire was established in Mesopotamia by Sargon of Akkad in 2334 BCE (Kelly, 2011). The essay will compare kingship in three geographically and chronologically different societies. They are the following: Babylonians during Hammurabi s reign (1792 1750 BCE), Neo Assyrians (934 610 BCE), and the Jews (1000 BCE). In order to avoid historical distortions, primary sources from those time periods will be used. These three communities have influenced each other in different fields. Therefore, we can see similarities in their ruling systems.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to the Advice to a Prince, gods only could judge and punish the ruler, for example, if he (ruler) takes silver... Marduk, lord of Heaven and Earth, will set his foes upon him... (Sanders, p.70). Consequently, we can assume that ruler s power have increased enormously, since no matter what he does (even despotism) is supposed to be controlled by gods. Finally, the kingship in Israel has some differences as Jews are monotheistic. Nonetheless, the Jews believed in god s involvement in daily life as well. More importantly, god (Yahweh) was believed to decide who the king is and whether he must be changed (Sanders, p.72). This shows some parallels with Assyrians where gods only could judge the ruler. As a result, it is seen that regardless of regions and number of gods (monotheism or polytheism) rulers in ancient times were connected with divine power. In fact, at ancient times rulers often represented the choice of god(s), whereas presently they represent the choice of people. This, I think, led to more fearful and respectful attitude towards rulers due to their divine support. In addition to the connection with the divine power, rulers in ancient world had one very distinct feature. Almost always rulers were men, with very few exceptions. Thus it is clearly seen that people at that time lived in patriarchal society. Moreover, rulers promoted patriarchy implicitly or sometimes even explicitly through their rules. For example, according to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Machiavelli and the Use of Antiquity in The Prince and The... Machiavelli and the Use of Antiquity in The Prince and The Discourses The Renaissance was a time of classical revival and a turning point from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern period in the course of history. Ancient texts and artifacts became sources of inspiration for intellectuals and artists alike, and the desire to emulate or even surpass the achievements of the past prompted them to study antiquities closely and saw them as models and guidance. People were consciously distinguishing themselves from the medieval thoughts and using history to make something new for their own era. In the field of political philosophy there s no exception. Niccolo Machiavelli is perhaps the most representative and groundbreaking figure of this trend in political philosophy. With his erudition in ancient literature, histories and political thoughts, Machiavelli draws various sources from antiquity to critic and response to the political environment of histime. While one may find seemingly discrepancies in The Prince and The Discourse on the First Ten Books of Tius Livy, the use of histories as guide to demonstrate or propose ideal rules is apparent in both works. We should note that synthesizing ancient philosophy or thoughts with contemporary thoughts is nothing new. Thomas Aquinas, for example, reconciled Aristotelianism and Christianity in his work Summa Theologica, using ancient antiquity to back up his Christian beliefs. What is so noteworthy in Machiavelli is his emphasis and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Advanced Persistent Threat At Sony Picture Entertainment (... Introduction According to lecture note and presentation from Dr. Tamir Bechor on October 21, 2016, advanced persistent threat: (i) pursues its objectives repeatedly over an extended period of time; (ii) adapts to defenders efforts to resist it; and (iii) is determined to maintain the level of interaction needed to execute its objectives. (Bechor, 2016) These objectives include building and strengthening its harmful system within an organization infrastructure in order to disrupt activities, obstruct normal operations, and extract sensitive information. Hence, this paper will clarify how advanced persistent threats (APTs) were achieved in the Sony Picture Entertainment (SPE) breach. In addition, examine the characteristics of the SPE threat level and adversary level relating to the threat actors capabilities, intent, and targets. Moreover, review why SPE previous security vulnerabilities and weaknesses or significant investments didn t benefit to detect or prevent this breach. (Bechor, 2016) Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) One attribute of APT refers to the continuous attacks from threat actors to penetrate SPE infrastructure. Although the attack on Sony Corporation in 2011 to its network might not have been related to this incident in 2014, it has been proven the hackers behind the SPE attack exploited a previously undisclosed or unknown [Zero Day] vulnerability in its computer systems that gave them unlimited access to the entirety of SPE s network. During special events like prom, graduation, house parties and the regular weekend gatherings teens can be found celebrating, raising red solo cups, and enjoying being young. However, at the end of the night it s not the teens that find themselves in trouble with the law, it s the parents. These events are socially referred to as drinking parties when parents knowingly or unknowingly have people under the drinking age in their home participating in underage drinking (Lawyers). Some parents feel that it s safer for their teens and their friends to drink in the privacy of their home. Other parents have no idea that underage drinking is going on in their home. Regardless of the situation there are consequences for all involved (Lawyers). When parents decide to host an event where there is a possibility underage drinking can take place, parents should be aware of social host liability . When hosting a social event were drinking is taking place parents become liable for any injury or injuries that are caused due to the alcohol that the parent served or supplied (lawyers). One can spend pages and pages outlining the aspects of the world that Idoru covers; every little point begs to be interperated, and as there is such a wealth of infomation, ideas, and typographic references to modern culture, a mass of isomorphisms which reach out to one, this book is, to me, personally at least, bordering on revolutionary. Idoru is however, not a work of classic liturature, and doesnt share much with its classical literary counterparts (Brave new world for example), but as a work on its own, within its own genre it is certainly one of the finest. Perhaps in this analysis, one should consider the usual analytical tools (plot, structure, characterisation etc), aswell as how this book could help us in predicting a (considerably less dark) vision of the future, not to mention what it is about this book that inspires one so much. As previously mentioned, this novels plot is somewhat complicated this however does not detract from the overall flow of the book in a sense, the density of infomation and detail we are faced with when reading, acts as a mechanism to allow us to live the moment in the novel a citizen in an infomtion dense society would be faced with so many details on a daily basis, it ... • 15. The Significance of Xenia in Homer’s The Odyssey Kaitlyn Lambert MR. Bovaird Honors English 9 23 May 2010 The Significance of Xenia in Homer s Odyssey The society of Ancient Greece was very much centered around the gods, and a healthy fear of the consequences of not obeying their laws. The next most important staples of the society were the concepts of braver, pride, and hospitality, or Xenia. The significance of these values is shown quite clearly in The Odyssey of Homer. In the first five books of the epic, Telemachos is shown great hospitality by the kings, Nestor, and Menelaos. As Homer writes in description of Nestor s reception of Telemachos and Athena, These men, when they sighted the strangers, all came down together and gave them greeting with their hands and offered ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Homer.9.289 2910 This is one example of the brutality that Odysseus and his crew were also shown, rather than hospitality. The range of degrees of hospitality shown to the travelers is a testament to the number of people who ignored the law of Xenia. The hospitality that Telemachos and Penelope show Odysseus when he returns home, even though they do not know who he really is yet another example of xenia. This hospitality helps in his winning his home back from the suitors. Telemachos welcomes Odysseus into the house, and gives him permission to beg the suitors of money. Despite knowing this, said suitors harass him when he asks for coins. In response to this, Telemachos says , There will be no pleasure in this feast, at all since vile things will be uppermost. Now the hallowed prince Telemachos spoken [...] I drive away no man. Telemachos s defense of Odysseus, even in guise of a vagabond, shows great grace on his part, and show great hospitality, on top of undermining the suitors, thus giving them less power. After the suitors have gone home, Penelope summons her maidservant, saying , Eurynome, bring up a chair, and put a fleece on it, so that the stranger can be seated, and tell me his story, and listen to what I have to say. During week one, 1 chloro 2 methylpropane was reacted with magnesium to form the Grignard reagent. The Grignard was then reacted with butanal to produce 2 methyl 4 heptanol. Using IR spectroscopy, the success or failure of the formation of the alcoholwas observed, concluding week one. During week two, 2 methyl 4 heptanol was oxidized in order to form our desired product of 2 methyl 4 heptanone. Both a GC and IR spectroscopy were observed in order to determine the presence of a newly formed ketone. The results of our experiment from the IR taken during week one showed no formation of an alcohol. The GC and IR spectroscopy... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Instead, the GC and IR spectroscopy showed the presence of an aldehyde, as opposed to the desired product of a ketone. The failure of this experiment was likely caused by a null reaction between 1 chloro 2 methylpropane and magnessium, leading to no, or very little, Grignard reagent being formed. The mixture between the 1 chloro 2 methylpropane and magnessium was conducted over an extended time period with exessive amounts of reagent used in order to attempt to push the reaction forward. However, it is believed that these extreme tactics lead to a false positive in the formation of the Grignard reagent and produced negative repercussions down the line when further experimentation was conducted. The data obtained by the IR spectroscopy from the conclusion of week one supports this theory. The presence of a carbonyl group, with an intensity of 72.40%, and no measurable formation of alcohol were observed. The oxidation of 2 methyl 4 heptanol can neither be deemed a success, nor a failure, due to it not existing in any measurable rate within our final product from week one. However, the mixture still underwent the oxidation process in an attempt to produce any possibility of the desired product. Using IR spectroscopy, the resulting data from the oxidation appeared very similar to that of the IR spectroscopy data from week one, with a slightly lower intensity of the carbonyl group at 66.89%. The GC performed on the final product mixture revealed this carbonyl group to be an aldehyde, as previously ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Covert Monitoring Of Private Communications Shortly after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the US Patriot Act granted was enacted granting wide legal authority to the intelligence community as a defensive measure against future terrorist attacks. Among those new powers, included in Article 215, is the right to obtain business records, while imposing a gag order on the party holding those records. This law remains the foundation upon which the current NSA phone metadata collection campaign is operated. In October 2001, President Bush ordered the National Security Agency to commence covert monitoring of private communications through the nation s telephone companies without the requisite FISA warrants. The agency began surveilling the Internet for emails, financial data, and voice messaging on belief that such metadata was not constitutionally protected. In effect, by penetrating the Internet for text and the parallel Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) for voice, the NSA had gained access to much of the world s telecommunications. • 20. Jan Aart Scholte Chapter 4 Explaining Globalization Scholte briefly examines six differing theoretical approaches to explaining globalization what are they? What is the central theme of each? Liberalisms Liberalist position globalization is, at the most elementary level, a result of natural human desires for economic welfare and political liberty. As such, increased transplanetary connectivity is ultimately derived from human drives to maximize material well being (through markets) and to exercise basic freedoms (as guaranteed by publicly accountable government). For liberalists globalization is an outcome of people s strivings to escape poverty as well as to achieve civil and political rights. On a liberalist account it is inherent in market ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In these cases, transplanetary connectivity is said to have arisen because of the way that people have mentally constructed the social world with symbols, language, interpretation, and so on. From ideational perspectives, globalization has resulted from particular forms and dynamics of consciousness. For methodological idealists, patterns of production and governance are second order structures that derive from deeper cultural and socio psychological forces. Such accounts of globalization have come especially from the fields of Anthropology, Humanities, Media Studies, and Sociology, although idealist arguments have also influenced some researchers in Geography, Politics and even Business Studies. One type of ideational explanation is constructivism, an approach that has been popular particularly since the 1990s among International Studies scholars in North America and Western Europe who wish to develop an alternative perspective to liberalism and political realism. As the theory s name suggests, constructivism concentrates on the ways that social actors construct their world: both within their own minds and through inter subjective communication with others. Particularly, constructivists examine how inter subjective communication generates common understandings of reality, shared norms for social behaviour, and notions of group identity and solidarity. As part of the battle between Mordecai (the hero) and Haman (the villain), Haman plans Mordecai s death, but in the end the instrument of death is turned on Haman himself. According to the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV), Haman s wife suggested (verse 5:14) that a gallows fifty cubits [seventy five to eighty feet] high be made ... to have Mordecai hanged on it. The Jewish Publication Society of America Version (JPS). translation offers instead, Let a stake be put up ... to have Mordecai impaled on it. Verse 7:10 details the plot reversal: The King s men either hanged Haman on the gallows (NRSV) or impaled Haman on the stake (JPS). Which is it? Was it a gallows or stake? And was Haman hanged or impaled? King James Version (KJV), the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) and the New American Standard (NAS) render the beginning of the verse the same: So, they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. However, consider the NIV s take on the text: So, they impaled Haman on the pole he had set up for Mordecai. (and to be fair, the NRSV contains a note that it should be rendered on a tree by impalement ) Clearly, hanging by the neck until dead and being shoved on a sharpened, wide perimeter stick are two (2) separate ways of dying. Filmed in the highlands of Papua, New Guinea, it follows a half white, half African man Joe Leahy attempting to manage a coffee plantation that he collectively owns with the local Ganiga tribe. Leahy employs Ganiga tribesmen and women, giving them 40% of the earnings while he receives 60%. During the film it is learned that coffee prices have plummeted, giving Leahy no choice but to cut wages and face the tribes people s response. The film portrays the tragedy within attempting to find cohesion in two completely opposing lifestyles, as one is seemingly attempting to overpower the other. While Joe Leahy represents the colonial businessman, his Ganiga partners, enthralled in their traditions and choosing to stay devoted to their duties in local tribal warfare, remain rooted in a lifestyle much different than that of Joe Leahy. Black Harvest evokes an understanding of the implications of colonialism that can be most deeply seen through the montage of many short scenes, with few moments of long held interview type shots. As the sound of the film is completely diegetic, everything that is heard is in direct correlation with what is being filmed, this being broken only once at the end of the film, where sobs can be heard from a woman aside from what is in direct camera view, symbolic of the film s downtrodden conclusion. After seeing that movie for the first time I found the Titanic and her famous story, I found the Titanic and very fascinating. Titanic is one of the greatest known maritime disasters in history to this day. She was the grandest, most technologically advanced ship, and safest ship of her time. As you read this report, you will be presented some effects Titanic had on things during her time period as well as in the present that most people may not know about. Body of Research During the time of her construction, Titanic was designed to be the largest, grandest, safest, and most technologically advanced ship during her time. Her designers and engineers set out to build a class of ocean liners that could compete against White Star Line s rival company, Cunard. However, when Titanic, the second of her sister ships sunk on her maiden voyage, it shook the world and it had a major impact on the world and its people. One of the main effects was the effect on safety regulations. Titanic only carried enough lifeboats to sustain roughly half of the passengers and crew on board. At the time, Titanic actually exceeded the amount of the lifeboats required by the British Board of Trade regulations by 10 percent. Although there was room on deck for twice as many lifeboats, the Titanic carried lifeboats for just over half of the passengers and crew on board. The designer of the Titanic had allowed room on deck for two rows of lifeboats, but one row was removed before the voyage began to make the deck more aesthetically pleasing [Rogers and others, 1998]. With outdated British Board of Trade regulations, the Titanic s twenty lifeboats actually exceeded requirements by 10 percent capacity [Refrigerator, 1998]. (Vicki Bassett, par. 21) After Titanic s disaster, the new safety regulations required all ships to carry enough lifeboats to sustain all of the passengers and crew aboard the ship. Moreover, the regulations also specify that the lifeboats had to carry items such as oars, food, drinks, compasses, etc. Following the increase in lifeboats, a mandatory use of wireless ... Today s generation may refer to television as a technological norm; delusional of a world where television was non existent. Notably, television unites the nation through local or world events, politics, education, and entertainment. Philo Farnsworth, Father of Television, invented the television; the electronic transmission of fixed or mobile images. Furthermore, Farnsworth s invention influenced a new form of media. Young Farnsworth s scientific, technological imagination as well as, competitive battle with a major league corporation, RCA, enticed the growth of one of the most popular media mediums; television. One illustrious instrument that advanced media configuration is Farnsworth s ambitious background. Philo Farnsworth, innovator at heart, was born August 19, 1906 in Beaver, Utah. Young Farnsworth grew up on a farmhouse in Rigby, Idaho. While tending to daily agricultural responsibilities on the farm, Farnsworth fantasized about conveying images through electrical power. He said he had realized seven years earlier, while plowing a field on his family s farm, that an image could be scanned onto a picture tube row by row ( Elma Gardner Farnsworth, 98; Helped Husband Develop TV, 2006). • 37. Literary Analysis Of A Personal Narrative In Frank... Kelley Simon s anecdote, Frank Sinatra s Gum, is a literacy narrative about an outcast teenage girl s personal account of her riveting interview with the one and only Frank Sinatra. The narrative illustrates Simon s internal struggle over how to successfully become part of a school clique of girls and her external struggle with Frank Sinatra. Her motivation for the interview, her self identity, and her ultimate decision all play a part in her methods. She uses rhetorical devices throughout the autobiographical sketch of Sinatra that help portray her true feelings. Simon s exaggerated use of imagery and sensory language, parallelism, and the modes of persuasion all dramatize the main focus in distinguishing between the allusion of an image and reality. In the beginning of the article, the author utilizes parallelism to compare her own father to Frank Sinatra. She claims that she liked how [Sinatra] was Sicilian as many of [her] father s friends and clients were (Simon 1). However, Simon does admit that he was a pug like Frankie in that both were unreasonable, illogical, and self centered (Simon 1). Both resorted to a physical means in order to resolve their differences. Sinatra reminds Simon of her father, and in such a way that allows her to admire him while she struggles with her uncertainty on whether or not she likes him. It was 1915, German forces grew tired and started to look for other ways to advance on British and French troops. As stated before the dye industry was a great weapon. Except it wasn t the dye that was used but a chemical used to create the dye, chlorine. The German army filled canisters of chlorine and bought them to the battlefield. • 40. Contemporary Issues In Social Policy Contemporary Issues in Social Policy By Nazia Howell October 2017 Social policy refers to the policies used by government for welfare and social protection (Spicker, P.) that are usually made by central Government and implemented by local authorities to tackle current social issues such as poverty and racism. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have now devolved and have their own laws and legislations on several issues. This essay will explore three contemporary issues in relation to social policy, whilst supporting these issues with legislation and economic context for each issue. The three issues that will be explored are: Welfare, Health and Pensions. Defining social policy, and understanding social policy becomes imperative, to enable understanding of the contemporary issues within it. Social policy was introduced in the early 19th Century, post war. At this time, William Beveridge introduced the idea of a Welfare Stateto address poverty. He released a report for social reform known as the five giants within society: squalor, disease, ignorance, idleness and want. The welfare state brought many positive improvements in Britain and Government passed reforms to address the poverty levels, introducing cradle to grave support. The National Health Service was set up which gave free health care to all and laws and Acts were put in place to help the young, the old, the sick the unemployed and the working class in times of need. The global assessment of biodiversity and the anthropogenic impacts on them should be an urgent priority for conservation biologists. Though overhunting, introduced species, habitat destruction, trophic cascades and climate change (evil quintet) are known to be the potential anthropogenic threats that are likely to drive extinctions in the future (Diamond 1984, Brook et al. 2008), more frequently, conservation biologists have focused their attention on visible threats like habitat destruction, in comparison with invisible threats like overhunting (Galetti Dirzo 2013). Traditional biodiversity assessments often ignore huntingpressure though they are aware of its presence, or classify into ways (e.g., heavy, moderate or low hunting) that are unsuitable for auditing by other researchers (Galetti Dirzo 2013). For example, what might be classified as heavy hunting pressure by one biologist can be classified as low hunting pressure by another. Moreover, also within the hunting classifications of a biologist, what is the difference between heavy, moderate and low hunting pressure? The use of different standards makes auditing of hunting pressure difficult. Here we ask how to measure the intensity of hunting pressure. Knowing this answer will help us better understand the effects of hunting on biodiversity loss and set conservation priorities more efficiently. This patriarchal love for control in turn leads to a discord of the family, especially between the child and father. In contrast to the father, the mother had a connection with their children, often leading to an overthrow of the husband. This materialistic love is easily shown in the myth of Demeter and Persephone. The joy of Demeter s eternal lifetime was her daughter, Persephone, whom she had borne to Zeus ( Rosenberg Demeter 94). After Persephone was taken away, Demeter became infuriated and even withdrew her life sustaining powers,.. she broke the plows, killed oxen, and caused the earth to shrivel ( Rosenberg Demeter 96). Seen from Demeter s reaction to the situation, the bond between mother and child was very strong compared to that of the father. When Persephone returns, she takes comfort in her mother rather than her father. Children usually took the mother s side and went against their father s will. In the creation myth of the Greeks, there were two generations in which the mother wanted to protect her children from the grasps of the father. Teamwork is the central theme in Osmosis Jones, and is developed through the monomyth. The monomyth or hero s journey shows the steps that most movies go through, for example, The Matrix, Harry Potter, and Hunger Games. Most of these stories pass through twelve specific steps. According to Joseph Campbell, in his book, The Hero With a Thousand Faces, The monomyth is a structure that is common in many heroic stories, an outline that has existed for millennia. This story follows the main steps within the monomyth, while each step helps strengthen the theme. Osmosis Jones, the main protagonist, lives his everyday life as a rebellious germ policeman in the mouth. The first step of the monomyth, or his call to adventure is when Frank, the body he is trying to protect, contracts a deadly virus named Thrax. Thinking Thrax was just a common coldFrank consumes a pill called Drixenol. Drixenol, also known as Drix, befriends Jones as they are assigned partners on the cold case.
