Mahatma Gandhi was the leader of India's independence movement against British rule through nonviolent civil disobedience. He practiced nonviolence and truth, fasting often for political protests. Gandhi led many movements, including the Salt March in 1930 to protest British taxes. Though India gained independence in 1947, Gandhi was assassinated in 1948 for his work to end religious violence during partition. Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence and truth continues to inspire people worldwide in confronting discrimination.
