The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 has changed the focus of copyright enforcement
away from the act of copyright infringement and toward the act of circumvention of the
technologies used to protect the rights of digital media owners. Additionally, the act has had
adverse effects that outweigh the benefits that it provides.

My desire is to continue a research career as an experimental physical chemist. I am grateful that I
have found my passion that I found early in life and have been supported by my family and
society. My educational experiences in Korea and the U.S. have demonstrated to me that the social
support and infrastructure are immensely important for individuals to live out their passion,
especially in the STEM field. As a female physical chemist who pursues an academic research, I
will strive to contribute to making an inclusive and supportive scientific community.
Basic scientific research was not an obvious career path for me as a student who went to a public
girl s high school in Korea. The belief that girls are not apt for challenges in male dominant STEM
careers discourage women participation, and many women struggle with social barriers to continue

Do you ever have an experience that destroys something that you had cherished for so long? There

In the Film Whale Riders, the director Niki Caro, does an excellent job in developing critical
themes combining spiritual and religious traditions resonating with the audience. The compelling
themes demonstrated in the movie such as leadership, change of role in women, connection to
nature, traditions and change are all eloquently presented as the plot unfolds. As a young woman
myself, I can feel empathy towards the main protagonist, Pai, as she puts maximum effort in
convincing her grandfather Koro, that she can be the families next whale rider.
As the movie begins, the tone of Pai s monologue where she describes how her family awaits the
birth of the first born boy who would become chief, moderately sets the the mood for the rest of
the film. Pai, states that there was no gladness was she was born; this is because both her mother
