Paper On Premature Pregnancy
Premature pregnancy amongst the young adolescents increases the risk of health for both the
mother and the child. The baby may suffer health risk if the mother is too young in age.
According to the World Health Organization. (2015), the maternal mortality ratio in 1990 2015,
MMR per 100,000 live births were: 178 in 2000, 109 in 2010 and 23.9 in 2017. See table 2
Observatory on Sexual and Reproductive Health (OSAR) reported that between the years of 2012
and 2014, there were 189,646 births amongst young mothers below the age of 19 years. Moreover,
they considered that pregnancy before the age of 14 is considered rape/violation, in where
pregnancy rates in Guatemala increased from 3,771 (2012) to 5,119 (2014). According to UNICEF

UNICEF 2014, stated that Guatemala had many problems with the fortification of salt with iodine
due to the economic and political situation. In 1993, the National Salt Producers Association
created the Procesadora y Distribuidora de Sal in order to establish a central plant for processing
and fortifying salt with micronutrients. According to UNICEF 2011, there were 114,000 newborns
unprotected against iodine. The Office of Dietary Supplements Vitamin A. (n.d) stated that Vitamin
A is crucial for the immune system (overcome infections), and prevent blindness (night blindness
/other visual diseases). UNICEF 2014, stated that in Guatemala there are 3 ways to ingest Vitamin
A such as, supplementation, fortification of foods (sugar), and variety of vitamin A rich food
(carrots, eggs, etc.). According to UNICEF 2014, in Guatemala sugar fortification began early in
the 1960 s. The World Health Organization (2009), estimated 16% of preschool aged children had
Vitamin A deficiency (VAD), and that 1,500 deaths annually were contributed to Vitamin A
deficiency. However, according to the National Micronutrient Survey in Guatemala (ENMICRON)
between the years 2009 2010, VAD amounts children 5 years was reduced to 0.3 meaning that it
was practically eradicated. The Office of Dietary Supplements Iron. (n.d), stated that iron is needed

Essay about Air Pollution in Birmingham, Alabama
Air pollution continues to be a significant problem in the city of Birmingham, as it has been for
decades. No one enjoys walking the streets of Birmingham only to taste or smell the smoke and
particulates in the air, not to mention the damaging effects to one s health. Fortunately,
improvements have been made; forty years ago, residents of Birmingham could not even see the
skyline due to the immense amounts of particulates in the air, but now the skyline is visible on a
daily basis. The noticeable improvement indicates the progress that has been made over the years,
but there is still plenty of room for much needed improvement. Birmingham s air quality is among
some of the worst in the United States, but there are several feasible and... Show more content on

For decades, the air quality in Birmingham did not meet EPA criteria, but crossed the threshold this
year. This achievement demonstrates the prominent progress made by the industries and residents
to improve air quality.
Although much improvement has been made, there is still more to be done. Spencer states that In
2011, the American Lung Association ranked Birmingham the eight worst city in the nation for
particle pollution, or soot (An Old Cloud of Polluted Air Lifts from Birmingham s Shoulders).
Birmingham s attempts at improving air quality have been valuable, but the air in Birmingham is
still dirty when compared to other industrial cities. Pollution continues to pose an enormous threat
to residents of urban cities worldwide. In the August 2008 Monthly Update, it is stated that
approximately 800,000 deaths each year can be attributed to outdoor air pollution, making pollution
the single most harmful environmental hazard to human health in urban areas (Kallman). The fact
that pollution kills hundreds of thousands of people each year alone portrays just how dangerous
living in these conditions can be. Kallman writes about a study which proves an increase in upper
respiratory diseases, cardiovascular mortality, respiratory mortality, and low birth weights when
exposed to air pollutants (August 2008: Monthly Update). These can be very serious diseases and
complications which, when contracted, can lead to death or very serious illnesses. There

My Village Life
Growing up in the city of Lagos Nigeria where everything is immensely distinct in comparison
with parts of the country with a fast pace flow of things, with people from every ethnic group
and religion you could never feel isolated in Lagos it almost reminds me of New York City vibe
filled with clustered building and congested with an abundance of people. One evening we
received news that we would be heading to the village to visit family and at last go, to the farm
we heard so much about my dad is from the village known as IVIUKHUA which is located in Edo
state nicknamed the heartbeat of Nigeria. See compared to the city life the village life was rough
but my grandparents seem to love it and I remember visiting them ever so often you know you
know you were in the village once you start to notice the absence of electricity poles that alone
gives you an idea of what a day to day would be in the village. The village consisted of several
walking distance towns and villagers tend to spend their everyday lives tending to their crops in
farms. I learned so much in such a short time at the farm
It was a lovely Sunday morning on August 7, 2005 it was a much anticipated trip filled with
excitement and joy it was about six of us (my mother, father, siblings, our driver and I ) all
dressed in protective gear drenched in bug spray to prevent mosquito bites, at the time malaria
was very common. We were riding in a white Isuzu 4wd drive 2000 model pickup truck which I
remember vividly.

Example Of Socio-Affective Strategies
Tarone (1980) points out that learning strategies can be conscious and behavioral (e.g.
memorization or repetition with the purpose of remembering) or they can be sub conscious and
psycholinguistic (e.g. inferring or overgeneralization) (cited in Ellis,1985; p.13). In other words,
learners employ learning strategies consciously or sub consciously. On the contrary, Cohen (1998),
states that learningprocesses are selected consciously by the learners. Likewise, Wenden (1987)
defines learning strategies as a language behavior that learners employ in the language learning
process consciously.
In order to describe the second language learning process, as Ellis (1985, p.165) says the process
includes using second language knowledge which is composed of production and ... Show more

Through these strategies learners are able to manipulate their own cognition, coordinate, plan,
organize and evaluate the learning process. Some processes which are related to metacognitive
strategies are the strategies of advanced preparation, self monitoring, delayed production, Self
evaluation and self reinforcement.
3.Socio Affective Strategies
Socio affective strategies are related to the appropriate behaviours of the learner in communicating
with others around them. Some of these strategies are asking questions, clarifying social roles and
relationships, or co operating with others in order to complete the tasks. Socio affective strategies
also help students overcome their emotional, psychological and social problems such as reducing
anxiety and apprehension.
The main goal of using language learning strategies are to help learners improve their knowledge
and understanding of the target language. They are the conscious thoughts and behaviours used by
students to facilitate language learning tasks and to personalize the language learning

Essay On Nature Vs Nurture
Nature Versus Nurture Within a Violent Adult s Child Development A majority of adulthood can
account for how an adult was as a child. During these important developmental stages humans are
incredibly inclined to absorb their environment and the social norms of those surrounding them.
However, nature versus nurture is the theory I which debates whether humans are more impacted
by their genetics or how they were raised. I am exceptionally interested in the development of
children and how their environment and genetics impact them as adults. I chose this specific topic
because I am also interested in the past of violent adults and how they arrived at the place they
currently are mentally. Within this essay, evidence will be prevented... Show more content on

However, this is damaging to society because early signs of violent habits can be ignored or not
taken care as well. Unsurprisingly, most serial killers have experienced a childhood filled with
various amounts of violence or abuse. Violence and abuse can be detrimental to the development
of a child, especially during their sensitive stages. Sensitive stages are when a child is more apt
to learn something and strengthen their brain. The reason these stages are so detrimental are
because the social norms learned during this time become habitual. Abuse can have a large
spectrum. Abuse can be defined as neglect throughout childhood, whether that is emotional,
physically, or both. Abuse can also be violent acts toward the child or a spouse. Violence can
vary from sexual abuse to physical abuse or both. These factors are the foundations of a child who
may have violent tendencies when they grow into adulthood. Secondly, children with an
uninvolved family environment are especially inclined for a violent future. The reasoning behind
this statement expressed by the authors is because the children are often forced to undergo the
role of the caretaker when they are young. This causes a difficult childhood and can cause the
yearn for revenge. This yearn for revenge can often become violence. A portion of the sample

Current Diagnostic And Treatment For Major Depressive...
The purpose of this paper revise current diagnostic and treatment for Major Depressive Disorder
it also includes suggestions for revisions of the current definition of MDD in the Diagnostic
Statistics Manual. This paper will focus on the influence of situational factors (financial issues or
death/loss of loved one) on timing of depressive symptoms. The influence of labels will also be
discussed and how the society and an individual s environment can affect the outcome of MDD.
Suggestions for the revision of psychiatric evaluations are also presented in this paper due to the
prominent role of social stigma in an individual s environment. The overall vision of this paper
includes a push for more implementation of psychological therapies in the treatment of MDD, and
individualized treatment plans that do not heavily emphasize the use of name brand
pharmaceuticals.
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common mental health diagnosis that affects roughly 3
million people in the United States alone (National Institute). It is an illness that does not
discriminate against socioeconomic class, race, gender, etc. and has a biological and environmental
affect. The biological component of depression involves familial history and how genetics plays an
important role in depression and can increase one s risk of developing some form of depression
during their lifetime. The environmental factors of depression are situational such as financial

John Rawls And John RawlsPrinciples Of Justice
Views on social justice are highly important to defining the roles of the state within society. The
perspectives presented by John Rawls and Robert Nozick demonstrate two extremely different
views of societal justice and the roles that the state should have in society. Each of these
philosophers give their own principles of justice, which are sets of rules society must follow in
order to be just. In this paper, I will analyze the views of each of these thinkers. I will also argue
that the Rawls principles of justice are preferable to Nozick s due to Nozick s lack of focus on
societal inequalities.
To understand Rawls principles of societal justice, it is important to first define exactly what a
society is. Rawls defines society as a group of people who cooperate and follow the same rules in
order to better their lives. While a society creates benefits, such as increased overall wealth,
burdens like taxes are also created. Most members of society would find more benefits and less
burdens to be desirable, and as a result, Rawls believes that principles of justice are needed to
distribute these fairly.
In order to create a just society, Rawls argues that the institutions within society must be guided by
the principles of justice. Rawls definition of an institution includes both political or constitutional
structures and economic or social arrangements. Examples of institutions by Rawls definition
include social practices such as monogamy in family life. According to

the first expansion teams ever, the team has over 50+ years of storied history. Because of his,

Since Harry Chiti didn t exactly become a star, New York decided to fulfill their promise. Hence,
they gave the Indians their player to be named later which was Chiti.

Since the team was struggling in the running department, they hired Olympic star Jesse Owens to
coach the team on running.

Despite this, the team still finished at the bottom and they sent Owens packing.

Why Do Life Be Fair Essay
Unless you re winning a game, most of your life will not be fair. Life isn t going to give you the
win and consequently, will be hard and unjust. You will have hardships and hesitations, and that
becomes another reason to want to win and overcome this game of life. There are a couple of
arguments why life will never be fair and one is... Life will always be a competition for the best
things, and two, our idea of fairness will always be what our interests are. Now you re thinking,
Right! Being fair doesn t have to deal with competition or my interests! , but really it does. Since
I have your attention, let s find out why. First, I said before that life is a competition and won t

When we have a mind set on something, in which we have an interest in, we find ourselves
awaiting for more that is unfair about that. Say you have an interest for good grades. When you
get that bad grade in the Gradebook, what do you assume first? You assume that the test just wasn

something like that, and we don t get what we wanted, we don t say Aww my bad. That was a
mistake on my side. Instead we go straight to the unfair side. A study has shown that among
survivors of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, which killed nearly 90,000 Chinese, those who lost
family and friends were more likely than others to believe the universe was unfair. Yet those who
continued to believe the universe was fair suffered the least anxiety and depression. This shows
that when they had an interest in family and the earthquake took them away, their life became
unfair. Correspondingly, you cannot go thinking that everything you have an interest in will
always be fair, because it won t. You have to believe in the fair in the world and prosper from those

How Did Charlemagne Build An Empire
Charlemagne was born around 742 748. Charlemagne s youth suggests that he received practically

Analysis Of The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall
While reading about character, I actually learned a lot of new terms. Those terms were heroine,
antihero, foil, archetypes, and scapegoat. I also learned that there are many different types of
characters. Characters can be flat, round, dynamic, stock, archetypes, and scapegoat. Although I
learned a lot, I also did know most of the reading about character. I do think this is an effective
reading because it explains facts about characters and gives a checklist for evidence to consider in
analyzing a character. I think that picking out the main character is fairly easy because most
readings just focus on one person, but if you do not know, the checklist this reading provided is
very helpful.
The Jilting of Granny Weatherall by Katherine Anne Porter
In this reading the main character, Granny, is easy to pick out. Granny is dying but she refuses to
believe that she is actually dying. On her deathbed she is thinking about keeping the house clean
and orderly. She was also thinking about the love letters that she has in the attic from her ex
fiancГ©, John. Granny did not want her daughter, Cornelia, to find them. Grannys last thought
was that she had been jilted. Honestly, I did not find this story very interesting because I think it
was a boring topic. It is sad that the Granny dies in the end, but how they organized it was boring.
They organized it just like a normal reading would be. I think it could have been more interesting if
they organized it a different way.

Fallen Societies from Failure of Rulers
John F. Kennedy once wrote, Efforts and courage are not enough without direction. From this I
think he s saying societies can fall if their not ruled the right way. And some of the societies
seemed like nothing could get in their way, but obviously they did because they didn t take good
care of them. That goes for a lot of other places also. Great societies fall due to social inequalities,
a dysfunctional or corrupt government, a crippled and inflating economy, and over expansion.
That s why Nazi Germany, The Civil Rights Era in America, and Ancient Rome didn t survive. A
number of societies fall because of rebellion and the people not being happy. All of the kids in
my dystopian novel were upset with the Unwinding process. They couldn t take the fear that
they had to go through from the ages 13 18. While reading you could feel the fear they went
through such as, and in seconds, disobedience erupts into a full scale revolt. Every terrible is
now a terror. The guards fire, but there are simply too many kids, and not enough tranq bullets.
For every kid that goes down, there s another kid that doesn t. The guards are quickly
overwhelmed, and once they are, the mob starts storming the front gate (311). A lot of people
were forced out of their public life so that was really a con and started a rebellion. The citizens of
that society thought that this was completely unfair and they wouldn t stand for it. An example of
this was, Although many of these citizens proved to be

Sometimes the very qualities that make a leader successful in one situation can impede his ability
to rationally handle other situations. Understanding the reasoning behind why certain people
make certain decisions in certain situations will never be cut and dry because when viewed
through a psychological viewpoint, knowing the humanistic characteristics affecting decision
making is important in getting a clearer picture. Personally, I would have asked for counsel from
the closest of my working city officials and even someone higher up whom I knew and trusted. I
am not expected, as a human being, to have all the answers but I can make rational choices given
the possible outcomes. In becoming familiar now with the events surrounding the MOVE disaster,
I as a future public administrator, can possibly recognize more easily when difficult situations may
call for psychology and human relations understanding. This knowledge is a necessity for me
personally as a mode of self critique, and for others in positions of leadership and authority that I
may work closely with who may find themselves trapped but unable to recognize it. I consider this

Baz Luhrmann In William Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet
Baz Luhrmanns contribution to the art of film, brings about a flamboyant and revitalizing
side to the industry. Through the use of cinematic language, his story telling techniques and
belief in the theatrical cinema come to life.
Baz Luhrmann has a very distinctive directing approach with particular techniques that
define his style. He presents his films as if he were telling a story, which he invites you into.
His stories are simple and he tends to give away the ending at the beginning of the film,
which intrigues you to find out more about what had taken place. For example Romeo and

And in Romeo and Juliet, Juliet s mothers

The language Luhrmann has used in Romeo and Juliet is lifted from the pages id
Shakespeare s text, which is surprisingly pleasing as the dialogue fits seamlessly into the
style of the film. Luhrmann has stripped the dialogue right down to the necessities in order
to sell to a commercial, younger audience, who struggles to understand the complexities of
the original dialogue.
Baz Luhrmanns films are known for their outlandish visuals and mash up of music creatively
interwoven into the scene. Luhrmann is a master of knowing how to highlight important
ideas and themes in a work that he is adapting. In Romeo and Juliet, he recognized the
importance of violence, and how a modern audience would not understand sword fighting
as being of extreme violence because in today s society there are much more dangerous
weapons available. Therefore the use of guns and a modern setting of Verona were
introduced to the Shakespeare film adaptation.
Baz Luhrmann was criticised for the amount of partying and luxury shown in The Great

Lastly, it is important to include Norm Chomsky every time we talk about language acquisition.
Through his studies we can say that children can learn a new language because of their innate

Buddhist Teachings In Canada
Buddhist teachings and tradition strongly emphasize the ideas of virtue, kindness and compassion.
These ideals are at the core of Buddhist tradition and they exemplify right ways of living in

The Social Media Of Adidas
Adidas was founded in the early years of 1924, at that time it bared the name Gebruder Dassler
Schuhfabrik. Its founder was named Adolf Dassler he was a German by origin. The company
mainly dealt with the design and manufacture of sporting shoes, clothing and accessories. Adidas
is the largest company in Europe. It has companies under it, these companies are: Reebok,
Taylor made Adidas Golf Company, a piece of Bayern Munich and Runstatic. Adidas mainly
uses social media for marketing purposes as every other big brand, company and small
entrepreneurs do. What brings the difference in how known Adidas is than other companies is
how they go about their social media marketing. Adidas seems to have done some a lot of
research on how and where to fetch their customers. An example is how they are excelling in
Facebook; Adidas has about 13 million fans. Using these platforms they give their fans
information about their products and an easy way to purchase any of their items. Adidas also
catches the eye of their followers on instagram by uploading graphics that attract their customers
to want to buy their products. These graphics are like shoes that have been well photographed and
edited, what else can a buyer look for; Adidas ensure all eyes are on them. Adidas has a department

Jean Dubuffet s Anatomy
When a child draws, their art hangs on a refrigerator. However, when an adult imitates children s
drawings, their art hangs on a museum wall. Throughout Jean Dubuffet s art career, he expressed
this desire to emulated children s art. But not only children s art, he engrossed himself in the works
created by asylum inmates. When children and the asylum inmates draw, their drawings spawn
from a raw and natural place. Dubuffet connected to that naГЇve way of expression. Also, he found
a barrier between himself and professional artists. In his mind, the production of art must emanate
in a completely spontaneous and immediate way .
On July 31, 1901, Dubuffet was born in Le Havre, France into a family that distributed wine. Even

When children select colors, not much thought is required. Understanding art fundamentals isn t a
genetic trait, one needs to observe nature, then they ll learn what the human eyes enjoy and don t
enjoy. However, children focus lies on coloring own their own volition. Even though these points
seem to bash children s capability, the intention is interpreting how Dubuffet comprehends children
s processes. When illustrating, a child displays a limited understanding of art rules because it s not
innate knowledge.
However, sometimes when a child chooses colors, it reflects an attraction to a lot of colors in the
same place. It s almost a natural attraction that a child conveys towards energetic colors. Still, this
innate action doesn t correlate with awareness. Children react to colors in a different fashion from
their elders and those called professionals. Especially if those professionals strive to create works

Break-Up Inside Cole
In the beginning of the novel, Cole behaves cruelly when he becomes emotional. One example
from the book is when Edwin is taking him to the island for the first time Anger welled up inside
cole. He hated that stupid stare. Pretending to aim for the waves, he spit so the wind would catch
the thick saliva and carry it back (Mikaelsen 5). Therefore the spit hit Edwin. Another example is
Cole beat up Peter Driscal after he told on Cole for breaking into the hardware store. And now Peter
can t walk correctly and has speech slur. Not only does cole act out in anger when he is mad, he
also behaves violently when he is afraid. For example, when he is on the island, he sees the spirit
bearand he tries to kill it. He flung the spear with all his strength fully intending to kill (Mikaelsen

Protein Synthesis
Genes expression is what encodes many proteins to give function to a cell. It involves many steps
that mostly include transcription and translation. Transcription alone does not play a role in gene
expression (Erster Lect. 24). There are many post transcriptional regulatory mechanisms that have
been found to be involved. These mechanisms are a part of RNA processing. One of this can occur
through alternative splicing. This is when exons of the same geneare spliced together to produce
different mRNA molecules (Reece, et al. 372). Regulating gene expressionalso occurs during
translation. mRNA lifespan within the cytoplasm is significant when it comes to determining the
arrangement of proteinsynthesis. These mRNA molecules tend to be degraded by enzymes moments

This answer is correct. Being monocistronic means that a single protein is transcribed from a
mRNA (Lodish H, et al.). Eukaryotic mRNA are monocistronic. During transcription, the mRNA
molecule carries a genetic message for protein synthesis. Translation is the formation of a
polypeptide based on the genetic message of the mRNA. During this stage, the cell reads the
nucleotide sequence that make up a codon of the mRNA and creates the corresponding amino
acid sequence of a polypeptide (Reece, et al. 336). Since only one polypeptide is created from the
mRNA, only I is true and this choice is correct.
Choice B. This answer is incorrect. Transcription does not stop at a stop codon. A stop codon is a
stop signal that marks the termination of translation (Reece, et al. 339). In the termination of
transcription of eukaryotes, RNA polymerase II transcribes the polyadenylation signal sequence in
the pre mRNA. It is then contained by other proteins within the nucleus. These proteins assist in
freeing the pre RNA from the polymerase. Transcription basically stops when a stop signal
appears (Reece, et al. 342). As mentioned above, I is true but the statement for II is false so this
answer choice is

Igor Stravinsky Essay
Igor Stravinsky
In the passage by Igor Stravinsky, he uses not only comparison and contrast, but also language to
convey his point of view about the conductors of the time and their extreme egotism. Stravinsky
believes that conductors exploit the music for their own personal gain, so rather, he looks on them in
a negative light.
To show his aggravation and irritation, Stravinsky uses the rhetorical device of comparison and
contrast to convey his opinion of conductors. He compares the great conductors to great actors in
that [they] are unable to play anything but themselves . Moreover, being unable to adapt, they have
to adapt the work to themselves, not themselves to the work, which is obviously offending to a
notable composer ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This contrasts the motives of the composer and the conductor, which should be to keep the integrity
of the piece of music, but as mentioned above, Stravinsky believes that the conductor s are usually
for personal gain.
The negative point of view that Stravinsky has for the conductors is also revealed through the use
of language, literal and figurative language. Stravinsky uses both literal and figurative language
because they have the power to portray reality. In this piece, the word great is used sarcastically to
show the contrast between what the conductors think of themselves and what he thinks of them.
They both are reality, but reality to two different people, so using great in a sarcastic manner allows
for both Stravinsky s and the conductors interpretations of reality. In this case, the denotation and
the connotation are different, making them important. Here the denotation of the word great is
wonderful, majestic, and important, while the connotation is the exact opposite, ignoble,
insignificant, and inferior. Literal language tells the apparent truth, while figurative language tells
the apparent truth it also tells the indirect truth, making language important in this piece.
In conclusion, Stravinsky airs his annoyance and irritation of

Original Grizzly Bear Flag By Robert B. Ide And Men
California was ruled by the Spanish until the early 1800 s. Around 1822, news that Spain was
backing away from its northern colony reached California and led to some unrest and revolt. The
state became fully independent in 1836 and bears the Red Lone Star Flag which contained a single
red star on a white background. In the anticipation to end Mexican rule over the Free and Sovereign
State of California, Peter Storm designed the original Grizzly Bear Flag which was raised for the
first time in Sonoma, California in June 1846. Of those who raised the first flag includes William B.
Ideand men who became known as the Bear Flaggers. California was part of Mexico since its
independence in 1821. It was called the department of Alta California and a province of New
Spain for many years. William L. Todd, cousin of Mary Todd Lincoln, designed another
California Bear Flag. The star on the flag began in the 1863 Lone Star Flag. From the letter of
William Todd to Los Angeles Express, he said that the star came from using blackberry juice and
in recognition of the California Lone Star Flag, and the bear was made to symbolized strength
and unyielding resistance. Most think that the bear on the first bear flag resembles the grizzly,
but it resembles more of a common American black bear because it shows the lack of shoulder
hump and narrow muzzle. There was a brief history on the original Bear Flag and the republic it
symbolized during June to July 1846. A small group of American

Abstract
Hofstede s model (1980) has been used widely in research in the past two decades. The culture
based model consists of four dimensions: power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism
collectivism, and masculinity femininity. Each of these dimensions was identified through the use
of group level data collected from IBM branches in 40 different countries. Despite the contributions
of the model to cultural research, it has faced many criticisms over the years. Some in principle ...

Power distance, which is typically measured at a national or collective level, must also be
an
measured at an individual level. The reasoning behind this clarification is that a country
na
as a whole may exhibit high power distance, but the distribution of individuals within the country
typically follows a normal curve. Primarily, some people will be extremely high or low on power
distance, but the majority center around the intermediate levels of power distance. Despite the
difference between national and individual levels of power distance, the individual does influence
the national level. In a study done by Maznevski,
DiStefano, Gomez, Noorderhaven, and Wu (2002), it was found that when cultural data was first
gathered at the individual level then aggregated to the national level, there was a
Hofstede 5 difference in means between countries. This indicates that, the average individual
level of power distance will be higher in a country that is ranked high on power distance. So
what exactly influences the individual level of power distance? Such aspects as age, where you
grew up, and if you moved away from the country help to determine each individual s level of
power distance (Triandis, 2004; Yamada Singelis, 1999). The idea of individual and national levels
of analysis presented for power distance also holds true for the remaining three cultural dimensions.

The second dimension is uncertainty avoidance.

Review of War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning Essay
Review of War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning
War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, written by the talented author Chris Hedges, gives us
provoking thoughts that are somewhat painful to read but at the same time are quite personal
confessions. Chris Hedges, a talented journalist to say the least, brings nearly 15 years of being a
foreign correspondent to this book and subjectively concludes how all of his world experiences tie
together. Throughout his book, he unifies themes present in all wars he experienced first hand. The
most important themes I was able to draw from this book were, war skews reality, dominates
culture, seduces society with its heroic attributes, distorts memory, and supports a cause, and allures
us by a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
So he brings up a great point when talking about sensory war and mythic war. Manipulating
sensory war to mythic war creates a skewed reality.
The second chapter of the book, The Plague of Nationalism, fits into the myth of war by telling
the people of any country that it is o.k. to hate and it is o.k. to kill even though the cause might not
be just. He states that: Lurking beneath the surface of every society, including ours, is the
passionate yearning for a nationalist cause that exalts us, the kind that war alone is able to deliver.
We abandon individual responsibility for a shared, unquestioned communal enterprise, however
morally dubious (45). There is a myth within nationalism that it is right. However morally wrong
the reasons of war are, the myth of nationalism brain washes us into thinking that we are right. We
are doing this for the right reasons and therefore to support our military however morally dubious
the cause is. Chris Hedges writes about a general who, during a dispute with Chile, flew his
helicopter over the Chilean border in order to piss on Chilean Soil (42). Coming from the view
of a person who wasn t involved on either aspect of the war, this sounds a bit over the edge. Chris
Hedges talks about how nationalism and racism are almost directly related in war time. People do
things they wouldn t normally do under the circumstances. War drives us to do things we wouldn t

Pupil premium:
One core theme that derives from the fieldwork frequently is pupil premium. All respondents were
asked, which policy if any, would you say has been the most effective at promoting educational
attainment among pupils from economically deprived areas? (Question 4). All respondents
answered pupil premium as being the most effective policy. Respondents A, B and D all argued that
the extra funding helped to promote education attainment among pupils from economically
deprived backgrounds through more staff, additional facilities and funds for students. The data
drawn from table 4.2 supports earlier literature on pupil premium.
As previously stated, this extra funding ensures that schools with deprived pupils enroled have
enough resources as tools to succeed in education. Relating back to Table 4.2, respondents A and D
both state funding for staff, this is further supported by Carpenter et al (2013) who argue that the
policy contributes highly to additional staff and teachers have perceived this to be very effective.
This is particularly relevant to aim 3, on the outcomes of policy as additional staff contribute to
promoting educational attainment because it offers deprived pupils with additional support and
guidance.

Giant Hogweed Research Paper
The control and eradication of invasive species in Washington State is an important part of
maintaining the diversity and wellbeing of our ecosystems. One invasive species common to us,
Heracleum mantegazzianum, otherwise known as giant hogweed, is a Class A weed and must be
eliminated where encountered (Noxious Weed Control Board). H. mantegazzianum is
recognizable by its immense height of up to 20 feet, and its thick stalks support umbels of small,
clustered white flowers. It can be distinguished from plants of similar appearance by purple
blotches located on the stems (Noxious Weed Control Board). They are commonly found near
riverbanks and roadsides. (New York State Department of Environmental Conservation). H.
mantegazzianum owes much of its success as an invasive species to its reproductive capabilities as
an angiosperm. According to Reece et al, sexual reproduction for the angiosperms begins in the
flower on a mature sporophyte plant. Within the anther the male microsporocytes undergo meiosis to

Firstly, it is a threat to native species and perilous to the ecosystems they colonize by stealing
resources. Second, the formation of their roots contributes to soil erosion by the creation of bare

and leads to photo dermatitis (Noxious Weed Control Board). For these reasons, it is imperative that
this weed is eradicated in the state of Washington. Different methods of eliminating giant hogweed
exist, with varying results. For young plants, cutting the root 6 inches below the earth can be
effective when infestations are small. For larger infestations and with greater success, herbicides
containing triclopyr or glyphosate may be applied to giant hogweed. Treated infestations must be

My Neighbor Totoro Essay
Hayao Miyazaki has directed ten Studio Ghibli films, and many more outside the company. Most
of his films include a form of uncertainty, some of which include technological ambiguity, moral
ambiguity, and the ambiguity of age. The focus of this essay is Miyazaki s ambiguity of age,
specifically through his film My Neighbor Totoro. Through the theme of the ambiguity of age,
Miyazaki is able to show the different characteristics that are maintained through maturing,
characteristics that are left behind, and characteristics that are gained from the process of
growing up. I will focus on the differences of maturity between the two sisters and the father in
My Neighbor Totoro. Miyazaki s film My Neighbor Totoro tells the story of the two young
daughters (Satsuki and Mei), their father (Tatsuo), and the family s interactions with friendly
wood spirits in postwar rural Japan (Wikipedia). Satsuki seems to be around ten years old, and
Mei seems to be around five years old. The imbalance of maturity in Satsuki and Mei is first
demonstrated when they are running around their new house. Nothing is explicit about age
Miyazaki only shows Satsuki running around the house, and then shows Mei doing the same thing,
but she does it like a young child (Miyazaki 10). This seemingly small age difference is the
foundation of Miyazaki s themes, motifs, and juxtapositions. In the film, Satsuki and Mei s mother
(Yasuko) has a long term illness
and is in the hospital. As a result, the

The Softer Side of Resistance
The Softer Side of Resistance
Early Twentieth Century Italy, like the early Twentieth Century in the United States, was a time of
promise for women s progress. The issues forming the women s rights platform seem basic and,
especially because of our current placement in history, not too radical: the right to divorce,
educational and employment rights, and perhaps most extreme, voting rights. In the early years of
the Twentieth Century(although processes there were different from our concepts of democratic
voting), some of these issues had even been brought to the ballot (Pickering Iazza, Mothers, p.38).

42). True to its totalitarian character, this plan brought the state even further into the peoples
private lives. The Fascist government went as far as passing into law a bachelor tax. All eligible
men aged twenty six to sixty five paid exorbitant taxes if they chose to stay single (De Grazia,
p.69). The party outlawed birth control, held national childbearing contests, created monetary
incentives for having at least seven children, and campaigned for a revision of beauty standards
(De Grazia, ch. 3,4). Pursuing a goal that would mean more confining gender roles, for women and
men alike, Mussolini went all out to get his way.
In accordance with these ideals of womanhood, Mussolini saw to it that women s education was
tailored to their future roles as mothers and keepers of the house. Now, if wealthy enough to be in
school, women were taught, even at the university level, how to keep a home (Pickering Iazzi,
Mothers p. 34).
Mussolini also eliminated the most public display of women s potential political power, the right
to vote. One would assume that from the outset of his rule, the Duce would strongly oppose this
form of liberation for women. But his position wavered on this issue as much as it did in several
other areas. In 1919, he answered in an interview: I am a supporter of

It became a point in time, where enlisting in World War II, was the mentality of providing a

whites ran the show. Many white teachers made others feel useless and inferior to others. The
American society was in a transition period of cultural expansion. Whites felt the need to require

Killing Lincoln The Shocking Assassination That Changed...
In Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination That Changed America Forever O Reilly and
Dugard explain what happens when Lincoln becomes president. They tell all the events leading
up to his assassination, and who was involved. The book is showing, even though we think we

minds. The two authors have multiple books; for example, Killing Reagan and Killing Kennedy.

qualified to write books, but on the other hand Dugard is not. Killing Lincoln is based in
chronically order. It goes day by day on the war, what happens, and why it happens. It explains
why history is so important, and why we need to make America great. It all started on Saturday,
April first, eighteen sixty five in City Point, Virginia. Lincoln was known for his strong religion,
and trustworthy personality. (O Reilly 11). The Civil war had just began and Lincoln was
horrified. He just wanted to capture General Robert E. Lee, and force them to surrender. If
Lincoln cannot make this happen, the Civil War can go on for years. (O Reilly 14). Lincoln is
worried about one thing, and one thing only and that s to make America great again. He hires
General Ulysses Grant to be the captain and to recruit his army. Grant has Lee blocked on all three
sides, which limits Lee s soldiers to food. Surprisingly, Grant lets

The Energy Policy Act Of 2005
RIN Paper
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 established what is the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS). The RFS
was later modified by means of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 and is now as
we know it today. The purpose of the RFS is to form the requirement of specified volumes of
renewable fuel to be used for certain means each year. Those means include transportation fuel,
home heating oil, and jet fuel. The creation of the RFS allows for fuel to be distributed and used
properly without there being any issues. Having this standard establishes a system that creates fair
allocation and dispersal for fuel in all facets. Requirements are also put in place to enable a secure
process for managing the fuel. A major component for the RFS... Show more content on

The second value proposition for a RIN would be if the obligation exceeds the ability to place the
product in the market. This is not the case today as 90% of the fuel in the US continues to be
gasoline which could be blended with ethanol. The problem is that the petroleum industry simply
chooses not to blend above 10% ethanol volume in gasoline. A 15% ethanol blend, or E15, is a
legal fuel approved by EPA for approximately 75% of the cars on the road today and could easily
be offered to consumers. In addition, there are 14 million flex fuel vehicles (FFVs) on the road
today that can use up to 85% ethanol. Even a modest increase in market penetration of E85 would
absorb more ethanol than is required under the entire RFS program, thus relegating RINs to
worthless status. Due to the large profit the petroleum industry was making and the effect it had on
the credibility of RFS, the oil industry decided not to blend ethanol in volumes above 10 percent.
As a result, the price of RINs was increased significantly.
The RIN crisis was controversy and displeasure gear towards the petroleum industry, but it was
also self inflicted. The requirement for renewable fuel was passed quickly and overwhelmingly to
ensure the petroleum industry had no way of benefiting in such a negative manner again. The oil
industry now has complete and total control of the market and there hasn t been any major issues
with RINs since

Revolutionary War Disadvantages
time of struggle, the British Parliament passed the Stamp and Tea Act, the taxing upon any type of

by the British, the colonist had no representation, they weren t allowed to have a say. In result, the
colonist was angry which soon lead to consequences such as The Boston Massacre, and the Boston

Americans had faced many hardships throughout the journey of the fight for independence, but at
the end, these advantages and disadvantages lead to the outcome of the Revolutionary War. To
begin, the Americans were in a good position during the Revolutionary War. To elaborate, the
British had to continue sending money, troops, and they had to constantly fund to maintain the
British army in the Americas. They even hired mercenary Germans called Hessians in order to
defeat the Americans. In 1775, the Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia to select

Does The Shape Of The Roof Of A Car Affect How Far A Model...
Different shapes can affect how far a car can travel based on the how the air flows around it. The
question of the experiment is Does the shape of the roof of the car affect how far a model car
can travel? The hypothesis of the experiment is if the roof s shape is changed, then it will affect
how far the car can travel. The shape of the roof is the independent variable and the distance
traveled is the dependent variable. The control variables are the size of the wheels, where is the
car is launched from, and the same place to be launched from. The experimental groups are a car
with a pyramid shape as a roof shape, a cube shape, and a hemisphere shape. The control group is
a car with a flat surface as a roof. To start testing for this experiment some materials needed are
some LEGOв„ў bricks, and a ruler to measure the distance traveled. To collect the data run the

Isaiah 40-66
There are several challenges with the historical background and political setting of Isaiah 40 66
concerning author, date, time and situation of life for the Jews. LaSor notes that traditional
views that Isaiah authored the entire book are held by very few scholars. More and more critics
are accepting a two book theory with chapters 1 39 as book one and chapters 40 66 as book two.
Moreover, there are further refinements resulting in three books, dividing chapters 40 66 into 40 55
(Deutero Isaiah) and 56 66 (Trito Isaiah). (LaSor, William 1996., 281)
Since the argument for multiple authorships and time periods directly affect the historical and
political setting, it is necessary to briefly review them now. As noted by Laser, Internal evidence...

This would be sufficient to account for the introduction of later viewpoints resonating with its
origins. (LaSor, William 1996., 285)
Thus, the historical and political setting for Isaiah 40 66 could be spread across the rule of three
dominant nations, Assyria, Babylon, and Persia. Boadt notes that while the theme of Deutero
Isaiah was Consolation, the overall theme of the book centered on God as the Holy One of Israel;
foreign rule was God s disciplinary tool, and God s makes Zion the Divine dwelling place. (Boadt
1984, 417)
The IDB provides a brief overview of Israel s political setting after the invasions of Assyria in the
first century.
From the late 8th to the late 2nd cent., under Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, and Greek domination,
the sovereignty of monarchic Israel was confined to Jerusalem and its hinterland. This small
colonial sovereignty was embodied first in a vassal monarchy, then in an exiled monarchy, which
was briefly restored, then in a monarchic priesthood. (Sakenfeld 2006 2009,

EXTRACTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PROTEINS Abstract Different techniques and
principles for protein extraction and characterization were demonstrated in this experiment.
Various proteins were extracted from different sources: 1.67 g yeast invertase, 1.03 g egg white
albumin, and 5.15 g of milk casein. Activity assay for invertase was performed using Benedict s
test and the enzymes inverting action on sucrose was confirmed. Warburg Christian Method and
Bradford Assay were also employed to determine the protein concentration in the albumin and the
casein samples. The concentrations for the albumin and casein samples were found to be 0.519

As a result, the interactions between protein molecules exceed protein water interactions, and the
solubility decreases. Moreover, the differences in the amino acid sequence makes proteins differ
in their salting in and salting out behavior. This is the basis for the fractional precipitation of
proteins by means of salt. Most commonly used salt is ammonium sulfate because it is available
in highly purified form and because of its high solubility. (Boyer, 2000) Proteins can also be
fractionally precipitated by adjusting the pH, temperature and dielectric constant. Variations in pH
also change the state of ionization of the functional groups, and hence, the net charge of the
protein. Usually, the protein s solubility is at its least at the isoelectric point pI and increases on
either side of the pI. At the pI, the net charge of the protein is zero and the protein molecules do
not repel each other. As a result, protein protein interactions are increased and the solubility is at its
lowest. (Boyer, 2000) Meanwhile, if temperature is increased denatures the proteins. Proteins then
unfold and the non polar groups which were previously in the interior of the molecule become
exposed. This leads to a decrease in the solubility of the protein in aqueous environment. Addition of
ethanol, methanol, acetone and the like decreases the dielectric constant and thus decreases protein
s solubility. (Boyer, 2000) The

Life Lessons From Little League
In his autobiography Life Lessons from Little League, Vincent Fortanasce says Winning is
never final, and losing is never fatal. At the end of a game, one team will win and the other will
lose. Failure to accept this concept has become detrimental to American youth sports
organizations. Our society has become infatuated with winning, and all of the additional perks
associated with it. What is considered the best for children as young as five years old has grown
to an unrealistic extent. Parents want their children to be in a reputable organization, young
athletes want to play with highly skilled teammates, and coaches want to recruit talented players
all in hopes of being the absolute best . The amount of young athletes, ranging from five to
fourteen years old, participating in local sports organizations has declined within the last two
decades due to the highly competitive and unhealthy environments they are being exposed
to.Taking pride in your local community has decreased form an athletic point of view.
Representing the place I grew up in was a motivating factor when I put my uniform on for every

had grown to love the sport with ever since our tee ball days. Today, young athletes are branching
out from their homegrown roots to play for club teams who recruit players from a larger region.

Essay on Allegory of Faith by Johannes Vermeer
Allegory of Faith by Johannes Vermeer
The painting, Allegory of Faith, located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was created by the
Dutch Baroque painter Johannes Vermeer. This study of the painting will focus on the subject
matter, composition, and the symbolic meaning of the painting in relation to the Catholic faith, as
well as the controversy surrounding the success of the painting among modern critics. The
characteristic Baroque qualities of this painting will be illuminated through comparison with
examples of Dutch 17th century paintings, Vermeer s other works, and an analysis of his painting
technique and style.

  • 3. Essay about Air Pollution in Birmingham, Alabama Air pollution continues to be a significant problem in the city of Birmingham, as it has been for decades. No one enjoys walking the streets of Birmingham only to taste or smell the smoke and particulates in the air, not to mention the damaging effects to one s health. Fortunately, improvements have been made; forty years ago, residents of Birmingham could not even see the skyline due to the immense amounts of particulates in the air, but now the skyline is visible on a daily basis. The noticeable improvement indicates the progress that has been made over the years, but there is still plenty of room for much needed improvement. Birmingham s air quality is among some of the worst in the United States, but there are several feasible and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For decades, the air quality in Birmingham did not meet EPA criteria, but crossed the threshold this year. This achievement demonstrates the prominent progress made by the industries and residents to improve air quality. Although much improvement has been made, there is still more to be done. Spencer states that In 2011, the American Lung Association ranked Birmingham the eight worst city in the nation for particle pollution, or soot (An Old Cloud of Polluted Air Lifts from Birmingham s Shoulders). Birmingham s attempts at improving air quality have been valuable, but the air in Birmingham is still dirty when compared to other industrial cities. Pollution continues to pose an enormous threat to residents of urban cities worldwide. In the August 2008 Monthly Update, it is stated that approximately 800,000 deaths each year can be attributed to outdoor air pollution, making pollution the single most harmful environmental hazard to human health in urban areas (Kallman). The fact that pollution kills hundreds of thousands of people each year alone portrays just how dangerous living in these conditions can be. Kallman writes about a study which proves an increase in upper respiratory diseases, cardiovascular mortality, respiratory mortality, and low birth weights when exposed to air pollutants (August 2008: Monthly Update). These can be very serious diseases and complications which, when contracted, can lead to death or very serious illnesses. There ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. My Village Life Growing up in the city of Lagos Nigeria where everything is immensely distinct in comparison with parts of the country with a fast pace flow of things, with people from every ethnic group and religion you could never feel isolated in Lagos it almost reminds me of New York City vibe filled with clustered building and congested with an abundance of people. One evening we received news that we would be heading to the village to visit family and at last go, to the farm we heard so much about my dad is from the village known as IVIUKHUA which is located in Edo state nicknamed the heartbeat of Nigeria. See compared to the city life the village life was rough but my grandparents seem to love it and I remember visiting them ever so often you know you know you were in the village once you start to notice the absence of electricity poles that alone gives you an idea of what a day to day would be in the village. The village consisted of several walking distance towns and villagers tend to spend their everyday lives tending to their crops in farms. I learned so much in such a short time at the farm It was a lovely Sunday morning on August 7, 2005 it was a much anticipated trip filled with excitement and joy it was about six of us (my mother, father, siblings, our driver and I ) all dressed in protective gear drenched in bug spray to prevent mosquito bites, at the time malaria was very common. We were riding in a white Isuzu 4wd drive 2000 model pickup truck which I remember vividly. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Example Of Socio-Affective Strategies Tarone (1980) points out that learning strategies can be conscious and behavioral (e.g. memorization or repetition with the purpose of remembering) or they can be sub conscious and psycholinguistic (e.g. inferring or overgeneralization) (cited in Ellis,1985; p.13). In other words, learners employ learning strategies consciously or sub consciously. On the contrary, Cohen (1998), states that learningprocesses are selected consciously by the learners. Likewise, Wenden (1987) defines learning strategies as a language behavior that learners employ in the language learning process consciously. In order to describe the second language learning process, as Ellis (1985, p.165) says the process includes using second language knowledge which is composed of production and ... Some of these strategies are asking questions, clarifying social roles and relationships, or co operating with others in order to complete the tasks. Socio affective strategies also help students overcome their emotional, psychological and social problems such as reducing anxiety and apprehension. During these important developmental stages humans are incredibly inclined to absorb their environment and the social norms of those surrounding them. However, nature versus nurture is the theory I which debates whether humans are more impacted by their genetics or how they were raised. I am exceptionally interested in the development of children and how their environment and genetics impact them as adults. I chose this specific topic because I am also interested in the past of violent adults and how they arrived at the place they currently are mentally. Within this essay, evidence will be prevented... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, this is damaging to society because early signs of violent habits can be ignored or not taken care as well. Unsurprisingly, most serial killers have experienced a childhood filled with various amounts of violence or abuse. Violence and abuse can be detrimental to the development of a child, especially during their sensitive stages. Sensitive stages are when a child is more apt to learn something and strengthen their brain. The reason these stages are so detrimental are because the social norms learned during this time become habitual. Abuse can have a large spectrum. Abuse can be defined as neglect throughout childhood, whether that is emotional, physically, or both. Abuse can also be violent acts toward the child or a spouse. Violence can vary from sexual abuse to physical abuse or both. These factors are the foundations of a child who may have violent tendencies when they grow into adulthood. Secondly, children with an uninvolved family environment are especially inclined for a violent future. The reasoning behind this statement expressed by the authors is because the children are often forced to undergo the role of the caretaker when they are young. This causes a difficult childhood and can cause the yearn for revenge. This yearn for revenge can often become violence. • 8. John Rawls And John RawlsPrinciples Of Justice Views on social justice are highly important to defining the roles of the state within society. The perspectives presented by John Rawls and Robert Nozick demonstrate two extremely different views of societal justice and the roles that the state should have in society. Each of these philosophers give their own principles of justice, which are sets of rules society must follow in order to be just. In this paper, I will analyze the views of each of these thinkers. I will also argue that the Rawls principles of justice are preferable to Nozick s due to Nozick s lack of focus on societal inequalities. To understand Rawls principles of societal justice, it is important to first define exactly what a society is. Rawls defines society as a group of people who cooperate and follow the same rules in order to better their lives. While a society creates benefits, such as increased overall wealth, burdens like taxes are also created. Most members of society would find more benefits and less burdens to be desirable, and as a result, Rawls believes that principles of justice are needed to distribute these fairly. In order to create a just society, Rawls argues that the institutions within society must be guided by the principles of justice. Rawls definition of an institution includes both political or constitutional structures and economic or social arrangements. Examples of institutions by Rawls definition include social practices such as monogamy in family life. According to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Basics and the Criticisms Moira E. Hanna H Clemson University na an Hofstede 2 Abstract Hofstede s model (1980) has been used widely in research in the past two decades. The culture based model consists of four dimensions: power distance, uncertainty avoidance, individualism collectivism, and masculinity femininity. • 34. as a whole may exhibit high power distance, but the distribution of individuals within the country typically follows a normal curve. Primarily, some people will be extremely high or low on power distance, but the majority center around the intermediate levels of power distance. Despite the difference between national and individual levels of power distance, the individual does influence the national level. In a study done by Maznevski, DiStefano, Gomez, Noorderhaven, and Wu (2002), it was found that when cultural data was first gathered at the individual level then aggregated to the national level, there was a Hofstede 5 difference in means between countries. This indicates that, the average individual level of power distance will be higher in a country that is ranked high on power distance. So what exactly influences the individual level of power distance? Such aspects as age, where you grew up, and if you moved away from the country help to determine each individual s level of power distance (Triandis, 2004; Yamada Singelis, 1999). The idea of individual and national levels of analysis presented for power distance also holds true for the remaining three cultural dimensions. M The second dimension is uncertainty avoidance. ... Review of War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning Essay Review of War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning, written by the talented author Chris Hedges, gives us provoking thoughts that are somewhat painful to read but at the same time are quite personal confessions. Chris Hedges, a talented journalist to say the least, brings nearly 15 years of being a foreign correspondent to this book and subjectively concludes how all of his world experiences tie together. Throughout his book, he unifies themes present in all wars he experienced first hand. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So he brings up a great point when talking about sensory war and mythic war. Manipulating sensory war to mythic war creates a skewed reality. The second chapter of the book, The Plague of Nationalism, fits into the myth of war by telling the people of any country that it is o.k. to hate and it is o.k. to kill even though the cause might not be just. He states that: Lurking beneath the surface of every society, including ours, is the passionate yearning for a nationalist cause that exalts us, the kind that war alone is able to deliver. We abandon individual responsibility for a shared, unquestioned communal enterprise, however morally dubious (45). There is a myth within nationalism that it is right. However morally wrong the reasons of war are, the myth of nationalism brain washes us into thinking that we are right. We are doing this for the right reasons and therefore to support our military however morally dubious the cause is. Chris Hedges writes about a general who, during a dispute with Chile, flew his helicopter over the Chilean border in order to piss on Chilean Soil (42). Coming from the view of a person who wasn t involved on either aspect of the war, this sounds a bit over the edge. Chris Hedges talks about how nationalism and racism are almost directly related in war time. People do things they wouldn t normally do under the circumstances. All respondents were asked, which policy if any, would you say has been the most effective at promoting educational attainment among pupils from economically deprived areas? (Question 4). All respondents answered pupil premium as being the most effective policy. Respondents A, B and D all argued that the extra funding helped to promote education attainment among pupils from economically deprived backgrounds through more staff, additional facilities and funds for students. One invasive species common to us, Heracleum mantegazzianum, otherwise known as giant hogweed, is a Class A weed and must be eliminated where encountered (Noxious Weed Control Board). H. mantegazzianum is recognizable by its immense height of up to 20 feet, and its thick stalks support umbels of small, clustered white flowers. It can be distinguished from plants of similar appearance by purple blotches located on the stems (Noxious Weed Control Board). They are commonly found near riverbanks and roadsides. Most of his films include a form of uncertainty, some of which include technological ambiguity, moral ambiguity, and the ambiguity of age. The focus of this essay is Miyazaki s ambiguity of age, specifically through his film My Neighbor Totoro. Through the theme of the ambiguity of age, Miyazaki is able to show the different characteristics that are maintained through maturing, characteristics that are left behind, and characteristics that are gained from the process of growing up. I will focus on the differences of maturity between the two sisters and the father in My Neighbor Totoro. Miyazaki s film My Neighbor Totoro tells the story of the two young daughters (Satsuki and Mei), their father (Tatsuo), and the family s interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan (Wikipedia). Satsuki seems to be around ten years old, and Mei seems to be around five years old. The imbalance of maturity in Satsuki and Mei is first demonstrated when they are running around their new house. Nothing is explicit about age Miyazaki only shows Satsuki running around the house, and then shows Mei doing the same thing, but she does it like a young child (Miyazaki 10). This seemingly small age difference is the foundation of Miyazaki s themes, motifs, and juxtapositions. In the film, Satsuki and Mei s mother (Yasuko) has a long term illness and is in the hospital. The issues forming the women s rights platform seem basic and, especially because of our current placement in history, not too radical: the right to divorce, educational and employment rights, and perhaps most extreme, voting rights. In the early years of the Twentieth Century(although processes there were different from our concepts of democratic voting), some of these issues had even been brought to the ballot (Pickering Iazza, Mothers, p.38). True to its totalitarian character, this plan brought the state even further into the peoples private lives. The Fascist government went as far as passing into law a bachelor tax. All eligible men aged twenty six to sixty five paid exorbitant taxes if they chose to stay single (De Grazia, p.69). The party outlawed birth control, held national childbearing contests, created monetary incentives for having at least seven children, and campaigned for a revision of beauty standards (De Grazia, ch. 3,4). Pursuing a goal that would mean more confining gender roles, for women and men alike, Mussolini went all out to get his way. In accordance with these ideals of womanhood, Mussolini saw to it that women s education was tailored to their future roles as mothers and keepers of the house. Now, if wealthy enough to be in school, women were taught, even at the university level, how to keep a home (Pickering Iazzi, Mothers p. 34). Mussolini also eliminated the most public display of women s potential political power, the right to vote. Those means include transportation fuel, home heating oil, and jet fuel. The creation of the RFS allows for fuel to be distributed and used properly without there being any issues. This is not the case today as 90% of the fuel in the US continues to be gasoline which could be blended with ethanol. A 15% ethanol blend, or E15, is a legal fuel approved by EPA for approximately 75% of the cars on the road today and could easily be offered to consumers. In addition, there are 14 million flex fuel vehicles (FFVs) on the road today that can use up to 85% ethanol. Even a modest increase in market penetration of E85 would absorb more ethanol than is required under the entire RFS program, thus relegating RINs to worthless status. • 52. Extraction and Characterization of Proteins EXTRACTION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF PROTEINS Abstract Different techniques and principles for protein extraction and characterization were demonstrated in this experiment. Various proteins were extracted from different sources: 1.67 g yeast invertase, 1.03 g egg white albumin, and 5.15 g of milk casein. Activity assay for invertase was performed using Benedict s test and the enzymes inverting action on sucrose was confirmed. Warburg Christian Method and Bradford Assay were also employed to determine the protein concentration in the albumin and the casein samples. The concentrations for the albumin and casein samples were found to be 0.519 and 0.327 mg/mL, respectively based on Warburg Christian Assay; and 6.5x10 3В¬ and 1.9x10 2 mg/mL... Moreover, the differences in the amino acid sequence makes proteins differ in their salting in and salting out behavior. This is the basis for the fractional precipitation of proteins by means of salt. Most commonly used salt is ammonium sulfate because it is available in highly purified form and because of its high solubility. (Boyer, 2000) Proteins can also be fractionally precipitated by adjusting the pH, temperature and dielectric constant. Variations in pH also change the state of ionization of the functional groups, and hence, the net charge of the protein. Usually, the protein s solubility is at its least at the isoelectric point pI and increases on either side of the pI. At the pI, the net charge of the protein is zero and the protein molecules do not repel each other. As a result, protein protein interactions are increased and the solubility is at its lowest. (Boyer, 2000) Meanwhile, if temperature is increased denatures the proteins. Proteins then unfold and the non polar groups which were previously in the interior of the molecule become exposed. This leads to a decrease in the solubility of the protein in aqueous environment. Addition of ethanol, methanol, acetone and the like decreases the dielectric constant and thus decreases protein s solubility. (Boyer, 2000) The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 54. Life Lessons From Little League In his autobiography Life Lessons from Little League, Vincent Fortanasce says Winning is never final, and losing is never fatal. At the end of a game, one team will win and the other will lose. Failure to accept this concept has become detrimental to American youth sports organizations. Our society has become infatuated with winning, and all of the additional perks associated with it. What is considered the best for children as young as five years old has grown to an unrealistic extent. Parents want their children to be in a reputable organization, young athletes want to play with highly skilled teammates, and coaches want to recruit talented players all in hopes of being the absolute best . The amount of young athletes, ranging from five to fourteen years old, participating in local sports organizations has declined within the last two decades due to the highly competitive and unhealthy environments they are being exposed to.Taking pride in your local community has decreased form an athletic point of view. Representing the place I grew up in was a motivating factor when I put my uniform on for every single softball game I played in high school. I had the privilege to play on the field next to girls I had grown to love the sport with ever since our tee ball days. Today, young athletes are branching out from their homegrown roots to play for club teams who recruit players from a larger region. The popularity of traveling teams has substantially diluted the ... Your forefinger curls up and around the front end of the deck, your thumb extends along the left side of the deck, and your second, third, and fourth fingers press lightly on the right side of the deck, contacting it at each of their initial joint lines (photo ?). Slightly bend your wrist, tilting the front end of the deck to allow the majority of the deck s weight to come to rest on your forefinger. As the hands come together, the right thumb controls both how fast and how many cards slide over to the left in a pile under the left thumb (Photo ?). Continue spreading until all the cards have spread across to the left hand. As the cards passed this time, you likely noticed that the indices are now visible on the lower right corner and so seem upside down (Photo ?). Essay on Allegory of Faith by Johannes Vermeer Allegory of Faith by Johannes Vermeer The painting, Allegory of Faith, located in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was created by the Dutch Baroque painter Johannes Vermeer. This study of the painting will focus on the subject matter, composition, and the symbolic meaning of the painting in relation to the Catholic faith, as well as the controversy surrounding the success of the painting among modern critics. The characteristic Baroque qualities of this painting will be illuminated through comparison with examples of Dutch 17th century paintings, Vermeer s other works, and an analysis of his painting technique and style.
