During this photovoice assignment, I became enlightened on the literary culture at
the school in which I am conducting my observation. I toured the school s hallways
and my clinical supervisor s classroom as if it were a museum deliberately designed
for literacy. I closely examined many of the school s bulletin boards, posters,
bookshelves, and classrooms with the sole purpose of unearthing the culture of
literacyin the elementary school. The many steps I took to and fro each classroom
and hallway taking pictures of every literarily related item I could find were not in
vain. In fact, walking around the school and digitally capturing every bit of literacy
culture allowed me to identify not only the strengths and the weaknesses of the
literacy customs incorporated by the school, but it also provided me with literacy

There are many issues discussed when it comes to education including testing, school
accountability, teacher proficiency, and much more. There are many initiatives,
programs, and reforms being implemented to try to improve education outcomes for
students. While the school, administration, and teachers are an important part of
student education, there is also another vital item needed to encourage and ensure
student learning: parent or familyinvolvement in their child s education.
There are countless positive associations between parent and family engagement and
student academic confidence and success. Many organizations, including the
National Parent Teacher Alliance (PTA) and Parents for Public Schools (PPS), work
to encourage parents and families take on an active role in supporting and
reinforcing their child s education. The PTA website gives many parent guides to
support and direct engagement. Their guide Making Sure Your Child Gets the
Education They Deserve advises parents to have high expectations of school
buildings and equipment as well as initiate and maintain strong contact with their
child s teacher (pta.org). The PPS websites gives similar advice to parents and
families stating, School success takes great leadership, effective teachers and engaged
parents. We believe that parents are an essential education partner from the moment
their children are born (2017).

In the book, A Gathering of Old Men , by Ernest J. Gaines, there are some events
that corresponds to issues Malcom X responds to in his speech The Ballot or the
Bullet . Mathu s believes in his respect as an equal person and gains it by not
fearing white people. However, the preacher Jameson fears the whites and is
scared of the consequences of standing up to them. In the book, times have
changed and racism is slowly dying. In the story, A Gathering of Old Men , Mathu
was a character that was respected, because he feared no one. When Beau was shot
dead on Mathu s lawn, he stated, If Fix started anything, I am going to protect
myself (Gaines30). Being that Fix is a white man, going against a white man at that
time can lead blacks into a lot of trouble, such as being lynched. Yet, Mathu was still
prepared for the fight. If Mathu did not have the respect he has, then he would have
been lynched the moment he and Fix had the altercation at the store. According to the
text, When Fix told Mathu to take the bottle back in the store again, and Mathu did
not, Fix hit him and the fight was on (Gaines30). Mathu gained his respect, because
he refused to be mistreated by anyone. According to the book, To Mapes, Mathu was
