RESEARCH ISSUES IN WEB MINING
ABSTRACT
Web is a collection of inter–related files on one or more web servers while web mining means
extracting valuable information from web databases. Web mining is one of the data mining domains
where data mining techniques are used for extracting information from the web servers. The web
data includes web pages, web links, objects on the web and web logs. Web mining is used to
understand the customer behaviour, evaluate a particular website based on the information which is
stored in web log files. Web mining is evaluated by using data mining techniques, namely
classification, clustering, and association rules. It has some beneficial areas or applications such as

1. INTRODUCTION Web mining is the application of data mining technique which is an
unstructured or semi–structured data and it automatically discovers and extracts potentially useful
and previously unknown information or knowledge from the web. The significant web mining
applications are website design, web search, search engines, information retrieval, network
management, E–commerce, business and artificial intelligence, web market places and web
communities. Online business breaks the barrier of time and space as compared to the physical
office business. Big companies around the world are realizing that e–commerce is not just buying
and selling over Internet, rather it improves the efficiency to compete with other giants in the
market. This application includes the temporal issues for the users. []
Web mining has three classifications namely, web content mining, web structure mining and web
usage mining. Each classification is having its own algorithms and tools. Web content mining is
nothing but the discovery of valuable information from web documents and these web documents
may contain text, image, hyperlinks, metadata and structured records. It is used to look at the
information by search engine or web spiders i.e. Google, Yahoo. It is the process of retrieving the
useful information from the web content or web documents. Web structure mining is also a process

6. Why Are Web Servers Useful?
What are they?
Web servers are computers that deliver web pages. Every web server has an IP address and
sometimes a domain name.
What are the key functions and features of web servers
Some features include creating websites. Not literally creating websites but setting up a website and
being able to view the web page.
The primary function of a web server is to store, process and deliver web pages to clients
Creating an FTP site (This allows the user to transfer files to and from the site).
To organise website security. What user accounts aren't allowed to view the website and what user
accounts are allowed to view the website. What IP addresses aren't and are allowed the visit the
website.
How to use it
You open up the internet then you would type in the URL for the website you wish to see.
Why are web servers useful?
Web servers are useful because they allow easy flow for things like transferring files from computer
to computer. They are useful for communicating from all around the world. If we didn't have web
servers then we couldn't send files from for e.g. Australia to England. They are useful for storing,
processing and delivering web pages to clients. This relates to e–commerce because web servers are
delivering web pages which have a IP address or domain names so it will make it easier for people
to find your e–commerce site.

7. Url Is An Acronym For Uniform Resource Locator And Is A...
URL is an acronym for Uniform Resource Locator and is a reference (an address) to a resource on
the Internet. A URL is the fundamental network identification for any resource connected to the
web. It 's often easiest, although not entirely accurate, to think of a URL as the name of a file on the
World Wide Web because most URLs refer to a file on some machine on the network. However,
remember that URLs also can point to other resources on the network, such as database queries and
command output. Most people realize that a space is not allowed in a URL. However, it is also
important to realize as the URL string can only contain alphanumeric characters and "!$–_+* '()".
Any other characters that are required in the URL must be encoded. For analysts, there are two key
reasons that a solid grasp of URLs matter–Web analytics tools, Google Analytics, Adobe/Omniture
Site catalyst, Core metrics, Web trends, and the like all pack a wheelbarrow's worth of data into a
customized URL every time a user takes a tracked action; you can see a 4–minute video on that
subject or read a much more detailed explanation as to the mechanics of that process. Pages on the
site–some web analytics platforms use the URL as the core means for reporting "Pages" data some
don't either way, understanding the different components of a URL and how that affects the data
feeding into your analytics tool. Although each URL is a single string of numbers, letters, and

9. Url Stands For Uniform Resource Locator
URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator, and is used to specify addresses on the World Wide
Web. A URL is the fundamental network identification for any resource connected to the web (e.g.,
hypertext pages, images, and sound files).
A common way to get to a Web site is to enter the URL of its home page file in your Web browser 's
address line. However, any file within that Web site can also be specified with a URL. Such a file
might be any Web (HTML) page other than the home page, an image file, or a program such as a
common gateway interface application or Java applet. The URL contains the name of the protocol to
be used to access the file resource, a domain name that identifies a specific computer on the
Internet, and a pathname, a hierarchical description that specifies the location of a file in that
computer.
URLs have the following format: protocol://hostname/other_information
The protocol specifies how information from the link is transferred. The protocol used for web
resources is (HTTP). Other protocols compatible with most web browsers include HTTPS, FTP,
telnet, newsgroups, and Gopher. The protocol is followed by a colon, two slashes, and then the
domain name. The domain name is the computer on which the resource is located. Links to
particular files or subdirectories may be further specified after the domain name. Directory names
are separated by single forward slashes
On the Web (which uses the Hypertext Transfer Protocol, or HTTP), an example of a URL is:

10. Techniques That Can Be Used On Web
Techniques that can be used on web pages to help a user access and use a page.
Ensuring Compliance with W3C
By publishing open standards for Web protocols and languages, the W3C aim to avoid web
fragmentation with its goal of having 'Web interoperability'. The W3C (short for World Wide Web
Consortium) are a group founded in 1994 by Sir Tim Burners Lee, the same individual to have
invented the World Wide Web in 1989. This compliance group are in charge of setting the
international rules and guidelines for websites which are placed for the World Wide Web. They do
this so that the Web progresses in a single direction rather than being split amongst competing
divisions although it is not compulsory for a website or web browser to meet every ... Show more

This means that when the user is searching for a specific page through a search engine such as
Google, they will be able to find what they are looking for swiftly and will not have to search
through other pages to find what they want. This means that meta–tags allow better navigation and
accessibility to information for users.
Meta tagging can be used in order to aid user access to information, as it helps people find the
website based on the topic of information. This is done effectively when all of the keywords are
included in the meta–data when the website is being built. For example, when a website is being
designed to promote itself such as a cricket club, words in–relation to the club would be used such
as cricket, batsman, sponsor, club name etc. these words would all be included within the meta rage
because these words are related to the topic of the page and would therefore allow people to find the
website and its information a lot more quicker and easily.
Meta tagging is necessary for aiding users to find a website and being able to access the information
that it contains. Meta–tagging makes finding websites a lot easier because you do not need to know
the specific URL of the web page that you are trying to search for. This is due to the fact that the
user can use the information that is already provided to them in order to find a link to that webpage
that they are searching for. This will make navigating on the internet a easier

Phishing is a social engineering luring technique, in which an attacker aims to steal sensitive
information such as credit card information and online banking passwords from users. Phishing is

As phishing remains a significant criminal activity that causes great loss of money and personal
data. In respond to these threats, a variety of Anti–Phishing tools was released by software vendors
and companies. The Phishing detection technique used by industries mainly includes attack tracing,
report generating filtering, analysing, authentication, report making and network law enforcement.

that users are able to access other websites to help them create a wider understanding on healthy

UK prefer to obtain health information from UK sources (patient.co.uk 2010).
From reviewing the article, the URL (web address) indicates that the website is an UK based web
site, due to the final syllable in the domain name. However the website can all be acknowledged as
an organisational website, as it is sponsored by the information standard certification scheme(ref).
Which enables more recognition for the Patient.co.uk website to pursue and make a positive impact
(Anon,. 2011). This positive impact is created due the fact that the information standard scheme was
created by the Department of Health. This ensures that members of the public are able to identify
trustworthy health and social care information easily. The scheme reviews all articles that wish to be
sponsored. The sponsor then has to review the article to ensure the criteria is accurate, impartial,
balanced, evidence–based, accessible and well written. Resultantly, by having the Information

Hundreds of thousands of people surf the internet every day visiting web sites like Facebook and

the most beautiful and simple creations on the web. This language is used to create Facebook,
Twitter, Google, and even your everyday blog. In order to understand this language fully one must

HTML was used to create web pages all over the internet making it into what it is today. It was not
long after HTML was created that it was questioned as to whether or not it was advanced enough to
keep up with the rapid advancement of the internet. This lead to closing the development on HTML
by the World Wide Web Consortium or W3C in 1998. After the closing of development on HTML in
1998 the W3C began to work on a new project to replace HTML known as extensible hypertext
markup language or XHTML. XHTML was used in the same way as HTML and was very similar.
XHTML was designed to allow for more flexibility with design and lead the world into the 21
century with web design. All of the promises of XHTML were broken as the computer world put
down XHTML and refused to show support for the new computer language. XHTML was mostly
criticized for not being very forgivable in the way HTML was. If a couple lines were off in HTML
the web page would generate without the content associated with the error or even figure out what
the programmer was trying to say. This allowed for programmers to see exactly what was wrong
without allowing for the average person to tell. XHTML was not forgivable and would not generate
any content if a single line was wrong. This frustrated programmers as it cost them countless hours
looking through lines and lines looking for that one error that was causing the whole page not to

16. Web Analytics : A New Society
The advancements on technology, aligned with the digital inclusion along the years created a new
society called "Information society", and directly affected busyness vision. The Idea of Market
initially defined as a physical space or site used to facilitate exchanges in goods and services gained
a new concept, E–Commerce. Thus, companies around the world started investing on web sites
where customers could access products and services regardless the differences on time and location.
With the evolutions on business patterns and strategy it became necessary tracking for example the
daily levels of virtual accesses and sales through Web Analytics. Web Analytics is a revolutionary
way to support decisions in Web business using tools to collect and analyze data. The expression "
Collect and analyze data" it self is imprecise for a strong definition of Web Analytics, because of its
paradoxically interpretation. According to Avinash Kaushik (Sybex, 2007) Web analyzes based only
on data can't motivate complete decisions, and even when there is lots of dates it necessary the small
number of insights from the infinitesimally quantity of data. Therefore, I think that the best
definition of Web Analytics is presented by Avinash Kaushik on his book Web Analytics 2.0 book,

are covered by the security system.
3.2 Architecture of the security system
In order to get a system is characterized by durability, flexibility and resistant any potential change,
the security system is designed and consists of three layers: the user interface layer, the application
logic layer and the database layer. All these layers in the security system the main goal is to make
applications evolve and implementation easy and efficient.
The first layer(interface layer) offers to the user a friendly and convenient entry to contact with the
system. The second layer (application logic layer) implements the controlling functionalities and
manipulating the underlying logic connection of information flows; finally the data modeling job is
conducted by the database layer, which can store, index, manage and model information needed for
this application [41]. 3.2.1 Client Layer: The users (applicants) can access the data on the server

need to access their document from any computer but their own. However they will need a virtual

Web authoring tools make it possible to create and design web pages in ease as it requires to be less
technical to make. These include software applications such as Dreamweaver and Microsoft Front

22. The American Society Of Criminology Essay
The American Society Of Criminology
"AHHHHhhhhh!" I let out a girlish scream and squirmed as shivers went strait up my spine. I was
glued to the latest episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, a show that I have watched
religiously since its debut. Criminology is something that has always fascinated me, and is a career
that I hope to pursue in the future as an FBI agent. I frequently surf the web looking for short stories
to read about different criminal cases and to find information about job opportunities and
internships. One day I found a website of an organization that studied crime independently of the
government. I was immediately intrigued by the organization, and began reading about the

Today, membership includes "anyone interested in enhancing the professional interests of the study
of criminology from students, to practitioners, to scholars of various professional criminological
specialties" (American Society of Criminology homepage). Membership of ASC is no longer
limited to a geographic area. ASC has grown into an international organization involved with other
professional societies of criminology around the world. ASC sponsors an employment exchange
between its members to facilitate the various job openings in the criminological field over seas.
Today, nearly 1,000 people are attending annual meetings and "every major criminologist in the
United States is a member and active participant of ASC" (American Society of Criminology
homepage). Also, there are currently 121 (15.2%) female members of what was originally a
completely male organization. ASC's large numbers in membership and diversity makes the
organization a unique professional association of some of the world's best and brightest thinkers
(American Society of Criminology homepage).
The American Society of Criminology meets once a year at a large hotel to discuss a particular topic
of general interest. The society is divided up by committees, for seminars and plenary sessions. At
the last meeting, there were two dozen society committees and one hundred and eighty panels. The

23. Redesign Bath Magic Inc.
Typography For my typography project, I chose to redesign Bath Magic Inc.'s webpage. I found this
poorly designed webpage by simply searching the Internet for "ugly websites". It was at the top of a
list of "Top 10 Worst Websites You'll Wish You Hadn't Seen". I figured that I couldn't make it look
any worse. What I first noticed about this unfortunate website is the overload of information that
overwhelms the page, as well as its viewers. The information the site is attempting to convey is also
repeated numerous times. There is so much going on and being offered, that I, the viewer, am not
sure what Bath Magic Inc. is. Do they fix bathrooms, sell certain products, or all the above? The
website's information is not organized in a way that's usable and logical to the everyday site visitor.
In order to clearly convey what services their company has to offer, I sought to establish good visual
hierarchy in my redesign with the size, alignment, contrast, and density. In design, size is one
important way to draw the audience's attention. The bigger the object or font, the more attention it
demands. In order to highlight the most important and influential parts of the website, one should
make them bigger so the viewers will immediately be drawn to it. In Bath Magic Inc.'s original
website design, the largest elements are their slogan and some very unattractive images. The slogan,
in big white letters, takes away the importance of the company's brand. Bath Magic Inc.'s

24. A Note On B2b Sales Cycle
If you 're not using –– or have given up on –– landing pages, then you 're missing out on a truly
integral component of the sometimes complex B2B sales cycle.
Whether used as part of a lead or sales funnel... integrated into an email, PPC, or direct mail
campaign... a well–crafted landing page can really boost your conversion rates.
Now there are potentially hundreds of specific steps you can take in order to get the most out of
them. And there are, of course, various ways to test each page element.
Am I recommending that you ignore all the testing and tweaking? Of course not.
But if you want to get the most bang for your buck, you can 't afford to ignore the basics.
So without further ado, here are five steps to creating landing pages that convert.
1. Determine the goal.
The lack of a clearly defined goal is probably the single biggest stumbling block for most people. If
your pages contain six different ideas, all competing for attention, then you 're in for a disastrous
conversion experience.
For example, if you 've recently published three white papers, it would be a huge mistake to design
one landing page for all of them. Studies consistently show that vague or competing themes are a
huge factor in the overall success or failure of a landing page. So instead of cramming multiple
ideas onto one page, be sure to create a separate one for each. If you follow this one step alone, you
'll likely see at least a double digit improvement in your conversion rate.
2. Keep

Overcoming my Fear: Battling the "Big Blue Monster" Within
Imagine a small boy, probably six or seven years old, who was relishing his life, playing with his
friends, playing video games, playing with toys. You undoubtedly understand it by now, a lot of
playing! But one morning was a lot different from all others, it was a gloomy, autumn morning,
where the life of trees was draining away as their leaves fell onto the dead grass. That day, his dad
excitedly said "Son, we will be going somewhere special this afternoon," as the boy was dropped off
at school. As you can expect, this little boy was excited to the moon and over. "Maybe a park, or
maybe ToyRUs, ...or even Canada's Wonderland!" he endlessly thought to himself as he was
attempting to figure out where he could be going that afternoon. However, after school, he finally
learned the unanticipated place they were going to. At that instant, his excitement collapsed from the
moon and sunk to the base of the sea, as he understood that he was going to be tossed into a "big
blue monster that would eat him alive", as per his seven–year–old words would say, the swimming
pool. This little boy was me. In my life, I experienced many hurdles and challenges that I had to
overcome to be the person I am today. My first such momentous obstacle occurred when I was just
six or seven years–old, as I had to vanquish the "great big blue monster" as I struggled to learn how
to swim.
That afternoon, I eagerly jumped into the car as my dad

26. Web Usablity Analysis Essay
Introduction
I have chosen Kiplinger's business website to conduct a web usability analysis. Interactive design is
an evolutionary process, when you take identified problems, visions, needs, and wants reported by
user feedback, then incorporate or fix, and further evaluate to refine and increase the success of a
given product. In this case the product is a website. Sharp, Rogers & Preece, (2007) said this about
iterative design, "When problems are found in user testing, they are fixed and then more test and
observations are carried out to see the effects of the fixes" (P. 425). The company website I have
chosen will be analyzed using a critical eye that delves further into examples of specific factors that
directly impact the usability ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Analysis of Task: Finding tips for teaching kids how to save
From Kiplinger's home page, a user should search for this type of information in the Starting Out
link located at the top to find the Raising Money Smart Kids link. Users will also find success in
using the search option located at the top right and the site map located on the left side of
Kiplinger's website. Kiplinger logically displays information in the middle of the page under past
columns, book excerpt, allowances & rewards, savings tips, kids & credit, jobs & tax matters, Roth
IRAs & investing, and college prep. For this scenario, the savings tips area has information about
"how to teach young kids to save", this is just what a user would be looking for and the information
covers various age levels.
Examples of Navigational Theories
Navigating a website is similar to driving in a busy city for the first time and as we all know this can
be time consuming and you can get lost very easy if you do not have a road map. Like a driver,
users are concerned with knowing how to get from point A to Z and how to get back to where they
were previously. Website designers can prevent this problem by applying design guidelines and
arranging web content information carefully to help users find their way. Shubin, & Meehan (1997),
provided these tips, "Use of clear and consistent navigational aids (page

What is Web Security? (10 sentences)
Websites, which connect the information across the globe through a complex network are
unfortunately susceptible to security risks. Hence, the webservers connected to its network are
unsafe too. Webservers can be considered as service windows which open your network to the entire
world. So, the entire scenario depends on design of that window. Engineering it to filter the amount
and type of information you need to pass through it is the main point on which web security
depends. Email service is the best example for such a window. As email and web technologies
congregate, a great rise in number of security threats in terms of creativity and effectiveness is
observed. Hence, to eradicate this nightmare, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Additionally, some malware creates a denial of service by design, increasing the possibility of an
attack on the organization's infrastructure. While most organizations understand denial of service
very well since it impacts productivity but many ignore the impact on confidentiality and integrity.
Attackers access the organization's data they can use this to sell to third parties and make a profit.
What are the security risk of a static website? (10 sentences)
A static webpage is delivered to the user exactly as stored and displays the same set of information
for all users, from all context and subjected to modern capabilities of a web server. Hence, it can be
sometimes inevitable to make such webpages risk free. As they are quick & cheap to develop, there
are many loopholes in it. Moreover, to update them, expert advice is needed. Here are some of the

31. What Makes a Good Website
What makes a good website?
Introduction
In my opinion what makes a good web page? I have been on the net for the last, can 't really believe
it, coming to ten years now. From the conception to now, I have been a regular surfer on the web,
visiting thousands of pages a month, mostly in search of some thing or another. Most searches have
lead to even more searches but some times I come up tops. Having been used to the all text sites of
the beginning, and seeing the first implementations of more graphic based sites, there was a three–
year lapse where I rarely got to surfing and missed a whole evolution in web page. When I returned
in full to surfing, I discovered the face of the internet have started to change. Buttons with ... Show

Not using clashing colours is important, so, different shades of one colour used makes for a pleasant
view, just using different text colours or inlays to spice it up a bit.
Usability:
After the first three seconds is up, and the site still has my attention, usability of the site is the one
that will make me stick around.
Usability comes in many forms, and has many ingredients to it. For a start, the layout is the most
important. You can have good graphics but bad layout, and your site is ruined. Not thinking further
than your own computer screen is a big mistake. If a page does not fit my screen when I open it up it
already lost some points, so standardised width is a bonus that all good sites have. Even if you don 't
fill up the screen on bigger resolutions, having it usable on all is n good point (like nokia.com or
cnn.com). Where you place everything is going to make it a good site or not.
The simple points of usability is certainly obvious for someone who has spent some time on bad
sites, not that I think I 'm pro at this, but off course they are catering for me as well when they are
building the sites. Basic layout is very important, and by that, I mean, the basics in layout. Having
things in places where you think people are going to look is a good start. If you have to look for a
link to the main page from the splash page, then forget about getting much traffic. If the main page

32. The Occupational Health And Safety Standards
As safety practitioners, we need to understand that procedures can be the nemesis of any
occupational health and safety (OHS) management system. Getting it wrong can be the difference
between success and failure in safety compliance.
Sometimes procedures are created too rigid and bureaucratic, and other times they're non–specific
and ineffectual. The point is no one wants to be under the burden of unnecessary or unusable
procedures. What is needed is the right balance of simple instructions that are easy to read and
comprehend.
Developing your Safety Procedures
Procedures should communicate to employees what they need to know to do their job safely. Here
are 5 simple steps to follow:

Always consider the following options:
Flowchart – This shows a process as a simple diagram. By using a series of symbols and arrows to
indicate flow and action you can outline a process and make it easy to follow.
Tip: Don't complicate your chart with too many symbols or too much text. It should flow naturally
from start to finish and be structured in a logical way.
Photographs or Diagrams – Are commonly used especially where there is difficulty in
communicating due to illiteracy or use of multiple languages. The main goal of visualisation is to
make it possible to absorb large amounts of data quickly.
Tip: The saying "A picture is worth a thousand words" refers to the notion that a complex idea can
be conveyed with just a single still image. However just make sure you check that your image or
diagram is saying the right words to employees.
Step 4: Writing Style.
Remember when you write you need to consider the end–user, the person who has to read and
understand your procedure. To ensure success adopt the following simple rules of writing;
Use plain everyday English words or local language. The use of uncommon, long or complex words
or sentences should be avoided where possible.
Keep to short paragraphs and avoid using too many words. Just be specific enough to communicate
clearly.
Write at the appropriate reading level.
Try to keep the procedure itself to a reasonable size

Analytic tools let you explore bounce rates, which helps you determine if your web pages are
attractive enough to keep visitors on your site. Poor bounce rates, the number of visitors that left
your website without clicking through to more than one page, indicate you have a low "stickiness"
factor. This shouldn 't be confused with exit patterns, which give you details about when and where
a visitor left your website.
Clickstream analysis puts the power of data in your hands with tools that help you collect and
analyze data about the visitor path on your web pages. In other words, you get a clear picture of
what visitors are doing by following the clicks, hence the name "clickstream." Traffic pattern data
also provides insight into your page load times and how many pages are served per session.

about how you can fix the problems you find.

Introduction
According to Feeding America, a U.S. Hunger Relief Organization, over 50 million people suffer
from hunger in America. Although a complex issue, nonprofit organizations such as food banks
make tremendous contributions each year toward combating hunger. Unfortunately, the majority of
food donated to the Puyallup Food Bank located in Puyallup, Washington is heavily processed. A
heavily processed diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies in fiber, calcium, iron and vitamins. These
nutrients are vital to human survival.
Additionally, during non–holiday months, donations to the Puyallup Food Bank decrease
considerably. To change this and help the food bank receive sufficient nutritional food donations
year–round, team 6 decided to repurpose Sarah Pike's research project.
Using Ms. Pike's research, we realized the Puyallup Food Bank had issues in communicating its
needs effectively with the community. To assist in correcting this, we felt the design of a simple,
visually interesting "call to action" pamphlet would be an appropriate tool.
To accomplish the creation of this pamphlet, we broke the collaboration up into four tasks:
Write a project justification statement
Develop the pamphlet content through delegated research assignments
Design the pamphlet
Test the pamphlet effectiveness by obtaining feedback & finalizing the content
Our overall goal in completing this project is to create an effective pamphlet that will educate the

I will evaluate the layout and content of my brochure against the client brief and the questionnaire,
which I gave the client to answer. The page layout for each page is A4. At first I divided the pages
into three section, this made it more appealing and stand out. This is through including images,
