Introduction
Leadership is a process of influencing activities of a particular group of people with the aim of
attaining certain stipulated goals. In defining leadership there is need to consider a particular group,
the common goals and the duties that are allocated to specific members of the group depending on
their abilities (Fiedler 1976). Leadership therefore cannot successfully occur unless members of the

The concept of predictability of an individual is an essential psychodynamic element in my way of
leadership in the sense that the theory shows that human behaviors are predictable and
understandable (Northhouse, 2007). In this sense I easily predict certain individual's behaviors
based on their personality and this makes my leadership style to be described best by
psychodynamic approach. This can be illustrated by Jung's way of classifying personality such that
people's personality can be classified by understanding that human behavior is predictable and
understandable, they have preference of how they feel and think and these preferences become the
basis of how they work and play their specific roles (Northhouse, 2007).
My Distinguishing Leadership Traits One of the most distinguishing leadership traits I have is
the ability to instill some sense of passion to my team and hence leave in the team members a
conviction and the will to move on. I also have the quality of listening to my team; in this case I
listen carefully and consider various options to the issues raised before giving feedback. In
essence, as a good leader, I involve everyone, give everyone responsibility according to their

What is a leader? When thinking about this question I feel like you have to really know what it
means to be a leader. Webster Dictionary definition is: a time when a person holds the position of
a leader. No one is born a leader, leaderships skills comes from life experiences, education and
employment. Everyone grows into a leader and then afterwards grow into a leadership style that will

In Leadership Is an Art (1989), De Pree asserts that "the first responsibility of a leader is to define
reality". Bennis (1990) writes that leaders "manage the dream" . Vision is defined as "the force
which molds meaning for the people of an organization" by Manasse (1986).
According to Manasse, this aspect of leadership is "visionary leadership" and includes four
different types of vision: organization, future, personal, and strategic. Organizational vision
involves having a complete picture of a system's components as well as an understanding of their
interrelationships. "Future vision is a comprehensive picture of how an organization will look at
some point in the future, including how it will be positioned in its environment and how it will
function internally" (Manasse, 1986). Personal vision includes the leader's personal aspirations for
the organization and acts as the impetus for the leader's actions that will link organizational and
future vision. "Strategic vision involves connecting the reality of the present (organizational vision)
to the possibilities of the future (future vision) in a unique way (personal vision) that is appropriate

and I. When an important moment of discussion arises, I am always prepared to appropriately

Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam–Webster Dictionary leadership
is the "office or position of a leader" (Miriam–Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one
that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is "the ability

She not only believed in her staff, but in the company we worked for. It has been close to 20
years since I worked with Lucy, but I still remember her leadership style and it has had lasting
effects on the way I lead. Communication skills are extremely important in an effective leader. A
strong leader is able listen to her staff and communicates where they need to go to meet the goals of
the organization. This requires listening but also speaking in a way that can be easily understood, so

Upon finishing this course, I have learned an important lesson to be a manager and a leader of my
own life to lead others successfully. First, I have learned to manage and align my actions with my

effective leader. In his article, Kotter (2001) has differentiated the roles of a manager from those

experience rather than from formal training programs. A lifetime learner is accepting that you are
never finished educating yourself and by continuing to educate yourself, you become self–aware that

Leadership is defined as the position of a leader, the ability to lead. I assure you it is much more then
that. Being a leader is not easy, I have learned from personal experience. Being a captain of a
football team is hard work. It takes guts to stand up and be a leader. Leadership is respect. Respect by
others. You can't force people to respect you; you've got to earn it. A good leader earns respect
from his, or her, peers. They know he is their leader and when he tells them to do something, they
do it, and they respect his position. A captain deserves respect from his teammates. The respect your

When he yells, he strikes fear into his comrades. Along with leading by example, a captain should
be able to speak up. When a teammate is harming the team he should speak up and let them know
to stop what they are doing or to leave. A leader shouldn't be quite and expect people to listen and
follow them, he needs to speak up and take action.
Finally, Leadership is work. A leader works harder than anyone else and they know they need to
do so. A captain knows that he has to push himself to work above everyone else. He should run
faster, hit harder, and block better than anyone else on the team. If a captain works harder than
anyone else, then everything comes together. He earns respect; he takes responsibility, and leads
by example. Believe me, being a leader is not an easy job. If you can accomplish all these things
then you can be a true leader. From my own experience, being a captain is not easy. Even I
