Benefits Of Subsidizing Stem Classes
College is where you will find many opportunities which is why people should attend college.
Many high paying jobs are out there waiting for someone with the degree they desire to come
forth. Not only will college make you a better person, but will also take you on an unforgettable
journey. Some people may not understand the logic between right, and wrong and what is better
than to learn about philosophical ideas, if the new republic was to flourish and endure, it
required, above all, an education (Singletary 10). Subsidizing STEM classes is a bad idea because
lack interest will occur, many jobs will be at stake, and Artswould be too expensive. In the
Education: Does College Still Matter short passage, Tabarrok thought it would be best that the
people who choose STEM degrees, should have subsidized taxes. There is little justification for
subsidizing sociology, dance, and English majors (Tabarrok 5). This would not be beneficial
because it discourages the people who wanted to chase their dream career. For example, an
intelligent female may wantto be an English teacher, but knowing that her journey to get that
education will cost drastically more, than she will choose a different career, leaning more into a
STEM career. I think it is selfish for Tabarrak to only want a degree in STEM while he belittles
sociology, dance and English, when society needs those subjects just as much. When those students
who choose the unimportant degree path realize that their taxes

Cornelius Vanderbilt is one of the five tycoons of America. He was able to use both wit and his
entrepreneurial skills in order to create a very successful career and legacy. Starting off from the
very beginning, young Vanderbilt was able to start his own business. At the age of sixteen,
Vanderbilt decided to start his own ferry service with the loan he received by working through
his Mother. With the one hundred he was able to obtain, by clearing and planting eight acre field,
Vanderbilt purchased two small vessels and carried freight and passengers from Manhattan to
Staten Island. By being able to utilize his own earnings in order to start up a business for a chance

As for Gibbons and Vanderbilt, the two lowered their rates, applied services, and also tried out new
technologies which all help lead them to become hugely profitable. And in 1829, Vanderbilt left
Gibbons to increase his own business.
Vanderbilt created his own steamship company. With a fleet of boats and a budget of $30,000 or
roughly $775,000 today, Vanderbilt successfully established a company along the Hudson River. He
used his usual tactic, reduced fare prices, to stir away any competitors. He then expanded between
New York and New England and Long Island. What helped his business to flourish was through
customer s loyalty. Because Vanderbilt was known to have reliable, safe and cheap steamboats,
Cornelius Vanderbilt s company skyrocketed. In 1830, Vanderbilt entered the Hudson River market
and competed against Steamboat Association. Due to Vanderbilt s success, Steamboat Association
purchased his Hudson River company for $150,000 in total. Because of the success he had,
Vanderbilt went to Long Island for another round. His business tactic and customer loyalty served
him in the right way.
The Gold Rush, where many go to California in hopes for gold, allowed Vanderbilt to begin an
ocean going service, between West Coast and Central America. At the time, Clipper ship was
predominantly the best type of transportation. However

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi And The Congress Of Gandhi
On October 2, 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born into a religious Hindu family. His
father, Karamchand Gandhi, already had previous sons and daughters from his four other wives,
with Gandhi marking his last son. As a child, Gandhi showed great interests towards family
devotion and sacrifices. He would often slip away from his overly crowded house and into shops on
the street. Because of Hindu law, Gandhi was wed to Kasturbai Makanji at age 13 14.
Eventually, as Gandhi became older and more mature, he started showing passion towards his
studies. He was offered a one year contract for working in a South African Indian law firm. On his
way to Pretoria, a white man objected to the fact that Gandhi was traveling first class. Gandhi
refused to move, claiming he had a first class ticket. He was quickly thrown off the train and was
forced to spend a night on the station platform. After a successful and fulfilling year as a lawyer,
Gandhi s trip to South Africa was almost at an end. At his farewell party, Gandhi spotted a column
in the newspaper stating that the government in Natal was preparing to seize Indian s right to vote.
Disheartened by India s current condition, Gandhi decided to stay longer and gather signatures for a
petition against the discriminatory actions. Within two weeks, the pacifist collected ten thousand
signatures and founded the Indian Congress of Natal. Believing that written words would make a
bigger impact, Gandhi published two pamphlets that spoke out against the new government
movement. Without delay, Gandhi promptly returned to India to fetch his family. In 1906, Gandhi
attempted a mass nonviolent civil disobedience campaign to counteract the South African Transvaal
governments new restrictions and regulations. He dubbed it Satyagraha, meaning firmness in truth ,
but his attempts failed and he was promptly arrested. His actions, however, left a lasting impact,
leading to multiple rebellions and protest. In 1913, Gandhi made a negotiated a compromise with
General Jan Christian Smuts, which ended poll taxes for Indians and recognized non Christian
marriages. Later on in his life, Gandhi supervised many other nonviolent acts of rebellions, such as
mass marches and boycotts.

Cartel Case Study
The following is a case study of an economic analysis of Cartel agreement from European
Comission s paper[1] of six firms in the European Economic Area (EEA) for automative bearings,
the measures authorities took when they discovered the Cartel and of analyses and remedies the
authorities can impose when they discover Cartel. Dominated by an oligopolistic market structure
with few sellers, Cartel is a collusive agreement where the members seek to retain market share and
control price structure. For the welfare of the economy Cartel can be destructive.

As with many careers, financial planning requires an education. Financial advisors normally have
a bachelor s degree, but a master s degree adds credibility ( Financial Advisor ) . Some schools
that give you these degrees are Boston University, the College of Financial Planning, Texas Tech
University, and San Diego State University(Chandler). There are many degrees you can take in
those schools. Some are actuarial science, finance, accounting, business and law. Economics
include agricultural and business economics ( Financial Advisor ). You can take all of those
classes, but finance is the number one degree that employers want, as reported by the National

Opportunities ). What they do everyday is this: Dave Spano says that the first thing he does is
check his calendar for the day. His day usually consists of three meetings. In those meetings they
review people s financial plans and investment portfolios. The rest of the day usually consists of
communication with employees, clients, and others via email, phone, and face to face meetings
. Dave Spano also says some skill s a financial planner needs is to be really good at math,
understanding pre algebra and being a good communicator. Dave Spano says the workplace is fun,
open, and has lots of activity (Spano). The first thing you should do when you are in the financial
planning process is to assemble information, then you should organize your financial goals and
objectives, then you should process and analyze the information, then you should advise a plan,
then you should start the plan, then finally, you should keep watching the plan and making sure it
is doing fine (Curley). The workplace is always fun for a financial advisor.
If a person thinks about their career, they will think something like this. An advantage to financial
advising is that you can feel good about helping people achieve their financial goals (Spano). I
think this will feel very good because it feels great to help people. A

around the foundation of how our great nation had come to be and how its systems and political
affiliations were a major influence for the country.
To summarize, in Ellis first chapter called The Duel, illustrates the feud between Alexander
Hamilton and Aaron Burr. The famous duel which was illegal at the time, had taken place on July
11.1804 in Weehawken, New Jersey. To add, the two men did not like each other because of the
fact that Burr was a prideful and ignorant man who went against his Democratic Republican party.
To explain, the reason for the Burr not liking Hamilton was that he had told other members in the
House that Jefferson was the better candidate for President. Burr, who could not get over the fact
that Hamilton did such a thing, called Hamilton out. Hamilton could not turn down the duel
because he did not want to be perceived differently. Ellis mentioned the duel was under the system
of code duello where ten paces were taken and then shots were fired. It was known that these two
were polar opposites in their ideals and characteristics. Furthermore, Hamilton was the leader of the
Federalist party and served under Washington as his Secretary of Treasury. On the other hand, Burr

Symbolism In Lot Of The Lottery By Shirley Jackson
Lot of the Lottery
Brittney Hale
ENGL 1302
Ms. Mary Elle Young

Shirley Jackson s The Lottery , is a story that is filled with symbolism. The author uses symbolism
to help her represent the human race as cruel no matter how righteous he or she may see
themselves, or how perfect their way of life may seem to be. The story is very effective in making
the reader question the unnecessary nature humans express, especially when it comes to tradition or
violent behavior. Jackson effectively expresses her beliefs concerning mankind s true nature that is
commonly masked behind tradition. The author portrays how inhumane and cruel people can be
when it comes to their values and everyday life. Jackson presents the theme of this short story with a
major use of symbolism. Symbolism is shown throughout the setting of The Lottery, objects,
contestant s names and numbers.
The author makes it well known to the reader that the black box is the central theme of the
passage. The box symbolizes, at first, that something more ominous is to come. Jackson s choice
of the color black is a perfect example for the story, it symbolizes death and complete darkness. A
town person s fate lies in the hands of this inanimate object. The black box is an excellent
representation of the sacrifice the citizens are willing to give to keep up with traditions. The
author not only used the color of the box to symbolize what was happening in the town, but also
the condition of the box. The no longer completely black but splintered box portrays the decaying
of the original religious ideals the lottery (Jackson 230) was founded upon. Even though the
citizens felt uneasy about the box, and would even keep their distance from the stool with the
black box on it (thoughtco). They do not question the origin of the black box, but they accept it as
a way of life.
The names of the character play a significant role in developing the story. Quite a few of the
names are more obvious than others, such as Delacroix, which translates as of the cross . Others,
such as Adams, make the reader think more in depth about them. One of the main characters, Mrs.
Delacroix, appears often in the story. She is a companion of Tessie, the

Meno Dialogue
Meno by Plato, is a dialogue that discusses the idea of virtue and discusses the idea of human
nature and how we learn. The main speakers in the dialogue are Socrates and Meno. At the
beginning of the dialogue Meno poses many inquiries about virtue. He has many skillful exchanges
with Plato on the definition of virtue, which is when this passage comes along. Socrates: ...So now I
do not know what virtue is; perhaps you knew before you contacted me, but now you are
certainly like one who does not know. Nevertheless I want to examine and seek together with
you what it may be. (Meno 80d) to which Meno replies Meno: How will you look for it, Socrates,
when you do not know at all what it is? How will you aim to search for something you do not...

For example, if we were to inquire What is that statue? , there is no chance a recollection of the
past can answer this, but when we look at the name plate at the bottom and learn whom and why
this statue was created, we have effectively learnt about the statue. This is a more synthetic
answer and question. As you can see, there is a plethora of these type of questions that the idea
of recollection cannot cover. What Plato s recollection covers is more conversely known as our
innate ability to induce and infer based on past experiences. This can be seen in the slave boy
example, as the slave boy learns from experience Socrates: But if it is two feet also that way, it
would surely be twice two feet? Yes (Meno 82d). It can be said that the idea of recollection only
covers analytical answers. That is, questions and answers that can be reduced down to a base case
and built on towards the goal are what an analytical question or answer would be. An idea that
encompasses this, for example, is putting parallel two rulers of the same size beside each other and
understanding that they are

Fashion in the victorian era is described here as a moment of restriction for women and therefore
a reflection of their place in society. Women s ability to perform everyday tasks and engage in
activities was jeopardised for the sake of the male invention of corsets, forcing women as the V A

(Stein, 2015) The dramatic growth in this industry has lead to a change in attitudes, with society
accepting the extremes of surgery as the ordinary, for the sake of accomplishing beauty. It s
popularity continually growing has lead body modifications to become apart of regular day life.
A trend has even adapted of women even fitting small procedures, such as botox into their lunch
break (Kay 2014). Being no different as to wearing a corset, cosmetic surgery is now recognised
as just another beauty regime for women, as labelled here, Cosmetic surgery has become the new

women are still enduring pain and suffering to follow the standards set for them to gain social

Reflection On The Cradle Catholic
With over half of the students in Xavier University s undergraduate program identifying as
Catholics, I was not surprised that I ended up with a partner who is Catholic. However, I was
surprised to hear how into the Catholic faith my partner was and how much it has influenced
him as a person. My partner was Max Foreman, and just like myself, he has been a cradle
Catholic his entire life. Cradle Catholic is a term used to basically say that since he was born he
has been Catholic because his parents were Catholic and wanted to pass their faith down to him.
As a Roman Catholic you are expected to attend Mass every Sunday and every holy day of
obligation. For just one hour a week we go to listen to the word of God, pray to God, and receive
the Eucharist, but only if you have had your First Communion. Not only did Max attend Mass
every Sunday, he was an active part of it because he was an altar server. Basically, an altar server
is the priest s first hand man while Mass is being celebrated. When I asked Max to expand more
on his experience as an altar server he told me that it allowed him to really become closer with
God and realize that the Eucharist truly is more than just a piece of bread and wine but that it
fully is the actual body and blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Along with being an altar
server at Mass, Max also participated in several different volunteer opportunities. Some of these

Analysis Of Ian Mcewan s The Saturday Essay
In this analytic essay, I will be exploring the use of literary language in the novel Saturday by Ian
McEwan and how with the use of narration and imagery can under shadow a simple piece of
literature.
Ian McEwan uses a contemporary character to show the day in a life of a Londoner, with the aid
of the narrator s voice throughout, there is a lot of symbolic imagery and strong statements. The
narrator appears omniscient thought out this text, the effectiveness of this allows us to be
emotionally attached to just Henry, and not allowing much use of imagination. Wonderfully Ian
McEwan challenges the reader at moments of conflict, with morality in mind, to then following the
view of Henry. Is the lierarture theme of following this character a metaphor for London? I believe
this choice of narration is to cover up the sub lining of this piece of literature, which is power and
identification of London through a single character.
The use of the vocabulary in this novel is rather meticulous, every detail finely researched, a piece
of fiction that educates the reader and questions. With the use of sleeping, working, entertaining
themselves he writes humanly relatable actions, as if we were in fact a machine, a routine
sequence that sub textually describes the character Henry, and with that in place, describes
London. Henry goes about his day in a perfect circle . Henry s thoughts describe his accident as a
trivial matter p82 an inconvenience, which is shown when he disregards

The Character Of Don Giovanni
Don Giovanni is the protagonist of one of the most famous Mozart s operas. Mozart s protagonist
is based of the Spanish tale s character named Don Juan, a famous womanizer. According to
Cambridge Dictionary, a hero is defined as a person admire for bravery, great achievements, or
good qualities, [1] it can be said that Don Giovanniis brave, at his standards has some great
achievements, and has some good qualities such as fearlessness, courage, and firm to his beliefs.
One of the main reasons why some people label Don Giovanni as a villain is because at the
beginning of the operaDonna Anna claims that Giovanni has raped her and then calls him a
murder when he kills her father. When taken a closer look at those specific scenes, such claims
are less credible. Instead of being afraid like a usual rape victim, she seems furious. The claim of
rape gets even more questionable when Donna Anna s first recrimination is betrayer, instead of
rapist. It gives the impression that she appears to be angry at the fact that he is leaving her.
Describing Don Giovanni as a murder also seems to be inaccurate. It has to be clarified that
killing someone in a duel is not a murder. Donna s father was the one who challenged Don
Giovanni. He clearly knew that the only outcome was for one of them to die, and that there was
a chance that it could be him. It is also important to take into account that Giovanni repeatedly
refused to fight. Music helps to describe the characters, Every character stands out in the musical
picture. [3] It can be an indication of how he is portrayed as a hero. Mozart shows Don Giovanni
as courageous, strong and confident. When analyzing music, it can notice that Giovanni gets
great music. Mozart provides Don Giovanni with an aria that explicitly embraces his philosophy
of enjoying life: the famous champagne aria, Finch han dal vino. [2] This music is presented as full
of life and celebration which means that Don is shown as the force of life. It can be also be
deduced who Don is by contrasting his character with other s. Mozart also tells us who Don
Giovanni is by telling us who he is not. [3] Leporello is depicted as a character who is a whiner,
coward, and a follower. In one of the final

Psalms Literary Analysis
When reading the Psalms the reader should actively read as in participating in a sport. My
professor of English Dr. John Burkett instilled this into the class as we studied the Psalms. This
sets the stage when actively reading, the reader is engulfed by the text and is then alongside with
the psalmist: in feeling, emotion and even to the landscape where the psalmist is. Thus, actively
reading motivates the reader to clearly understand the meaning of the text that is read. The word is
described in the Dictionary of hermeneutics by Dr. James D. Hernando reads: Meaning is a word
used differently by scholars in their various approaches to interpretation . David writes the Psalms
for the reader to understand the fuller meaning as in the Sensus plenior . However David uses
figurative language he is writing with the readers in mind. Figurative language refers to all uses
of words that are metaphorical or symbolic in nature, conveying a meaning different from their
common, literal sense. An example of David s figurative language is You have kept count of my
tossing s; put my tears in Your bottle; are they not in Your book (Ps. 56:8 ESV)? The bottle is a
figurative meaning of Godremembering all his tears. God does not need a bottle for remembrance
this is a way for David to convey to his reader s Gods eternal loving memory will remember their
every teardrop. When diving into this nugget of truth, God s love for us is unfathomable. The depth
of love from David s point

The Theory Of Induction And Induction
Introduction
Induction machines are classified into two which includes motors and generators. The basic
principles of these motors can be applied and hence develop equations describing its behaviour.
The most common motors include squirrel cage, wound rotor ranging from few horsepower to
thousands as the case may be. Squirrel Cage Rotor consist of a bare copper, slightly longer than
the rotor, while a wound rotor has a 3 phase windings, and are evenly distributed in the slots,
usually connected in 3 wye. The resistors are mainly used during the start up period under normal
running conditions.

is caused by mismatch of reactive power between generating and industrial stations, hence it can
be classified BOV (Balanced Overvoltage), phase voltages greater than rated voltage. BUV
(Balanced Under voltage), phase voltages lesser than rated voltage. UBOV (Unbalanced

greater than rated voltage and finally UBUV (Unbalanced Under voltage), voltages are not equal,
and hence the positive sequence component is lesser

Why Is It Important To Take Naps
1. I would tell the parents to tell the child why a nap is important for him. I would tell him that
when he takes naps he will have more energy to play and run around. Another thing they could
do it go in and read a story to him to help him fall asleep. Another good tip is to put on nap time
music, that always helps the children at the daycare fall asleep faster. The last thing I would
suggest is to rock your child yo sleep. Not in a ricking chair or anything, but to sit by their bed
and gently rock their body back and forth or rub the child s back. This is what we do at the
daycare to get all the children asleep. 2. I hated taking naps. My stepmom had us take naps until

Gloria Naylor s Mama Day
It is impossible to interpret Gloria Naylor s 1988 novel, Mama Day, in one way. There are
multiple standpoints that a reader can take in explaining various events that occur throughout the

different interpretations of the event that occurred in 1823 seem to have been developed from
generation to generation. For instance, some say Sapphira smothered Bascombe Wade in his
very bed, while others say she persuaded Bascombe Wade in a thousand days to deed all his
slaves every inch of land in Willow Springs and poisoned him for his trouble (Naylor 3). These
different interpretations apparently lead to the development to the use of the phrase 18 23 as a
slang term. For some, the phrase seems to represent death and destruction whereas others use it
synonymously with deception. But no matter what actually happened in 1823, the fact that so
many views are accepted by the community conveys to the reader the importance of open
mindedness in reading the book. Naylor continues to suggest the significance of open mindedness
by providing the reader with the opportunity to choose more than one way to explain Mama Day
s encounter with Bernice. Bernice decides to seek the advice of Mama Day, who is known to
have miraculous healing abilities, when she has trouble conceiving. Mama Day gives Bernice
pumpkin seeds and puts her under the impression that they are magic seeds (Naylor 96). This gives
Bernice time to build

Cormac Mccarthy s No Country For Old Men
No Country for Old Men, by Cormac McCarthy, is about a Vietnam War veteran stumbling upon
an irreversible mistake of witnessing a drug deal going completely south and his journey of being
on run from these dealers. This novel has the adaptation of becoming a screenplay as Robert
Mckee writes in his novel, Story. No Country for Old Menhas elements Mckee describes
incorporated within the novel, such as characterdevelopment and controlling ideas. McCarthy s
novel incorporates a defeat for the protagonists instead of the typical victory against evil. Victories
are clichГ© which Mckee believes should be avoided when creating a film, so McCarthy s novel
fits the role well.
Mckee describes in his novel how protagonists should have a conscious desire, meaning a goal they
strive to achieve. In No Country for Old ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Llewellyn Moss s development as a protagonist revolves around his experience as a war veteran
clouding his judgment and ultimately deciding his fate. Moss deals with inner conflict from his
disillusionment of war. His sense of autonomy and freedom drives him into a corner he cannot
escape. Moss proves to be an ideal protagonist through Mckee s Story since he is a character
dealing with conflict and striving to achieve his desires even though it ends in failure. No
Country for Old Men also incorporates a controlling idea. Mckee s thoughts on a controlling idea
are that it has a value plus a cause. In McCarthy s novel, this idea is reality giving the protagonist
a new perspective in life can ultimately lead to his demise. This phrase is insight of how the
novel should be displayed towards the audience. The protagonist should have an experience that
makes them think differently of the world; however, this thought process yields to their demise.

Understanding Temperament In Infants And Amy Hunter
The article Understanding Temperament in Infants and Toddlers is written by Lindsy T Allard and
Amy Hunter and through this article the author has tried to help early childhood caregivers and
parents to develop an understanding of temperament, so that they can better understand the
individual differences of the children and can support their holistic development.
Summary of the Article Temperamentdescribes the way a child approaches, reacts and relate to the
world around them. It helps us identify the strengths of the child and the supports they need to
succeed in their relationships and the environments. Researchers categorized the children, who tend

As an educator when I am very much informed about the temperament it would help me create
and design developmentally appropriate learning environments and practices as developmentally
appropriate learning environments and practices give children optimal time and space in which

children s needs are dealt with quickly. Children are talked with and listened to respectfully. (Jean

Pam Munoz Ry Video Analysis
After watching the video on Pam Munoz Ryan, I learned that she is an American writer who is
half Mexican and grew up in Bakersfield, California. When she was in fifth grade she moved
across town, this impacted her self esteem, likewise she was the new girl, but she also had
certain physical characteristics that made her feel liked by others or fit in her new school as she
mentioned, she was too tall, having big feet, and clothes were not right, therefore, she relied on
books to help her cope with her life, like she stated, redeem myself. As we can see, Ryan is a great

Designer Of Bottega Veneta, Designers And Clothing Companies
In the beginning, men s suits had rules: thy must be constricting and uncomfortable, and be a
sturdy black, navy blue, or gray. Comfortable clothes were restricted to weekends and only
weekends. But in the midst of a men s wear boom, the rules, and the suits, are loosening up. Men s
wardrobe in general has evolved immensely since designers and clothingcompanies first began
creating solely men s wear lines of clothing. Designers and clothing companies not only have
men s lines, but they include more than just suits: slacks, button downs, gold shirts, sports coats,
polo shirts, and relaxed fit t shirts are just some of the vast array of items now including in men
s clothing lines. Men are no longer being confined to the old stereotype of suits during the day,
pajamas at night, and comfortable less formal clothes on the weekends. And as a result of this
paradigm shift, this more relaxed attitude is being applied to suits themselves. As Tomas Maier,
designer of Bottega Veneta, put it, There s a lot of men out there who do not need those sartorial
codes. They re not lawyers, they re not working on Wall Street. In recent decades the men s suit
has settled into a comfortable rut: stiff, dark, breaking just so over the loafers, a dress code so
uniform that it s often overlooked. This becalmed style ended with the entrance of designer Thom
Browne and tailorRocco Ciccarelli. The duo disrupted men s wear with suits whose hemlines took

Why Go To College Essay
Why is it important to go to college? The generation before us says to be successful in today s
modern world you must go to college. I think that s entirely true, but not everyone can afford it.
For some people, college is not for them, but with the rise of animation and technology, all of the
jobs will get taken by robots, all around the world. To stop this from happening we must get the
right education so technology does not take over. That is why we should start off small and make

College is still a big factor in the type of jobs you get because many jobs require a college degree.
In order to get a good paying job, you ll have to do some type of college and there s no better
way to start than at a community college. If you think it s not for you then you re not curious or
passionate about anything and your part of the reason why America is so messed up. Not
anyone will be able to get in to the free community college. Making community colleges free
would be a privilege, and if you re just going to mess around and not take class seriously, you will
not receive the free tuition. In one of Obamas speeches he said The plan would provide tuition free
classes for student going to school at least half time who maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher and are
making steady progress towards a degree or transferring to a four year institution (Obama). What
this mean is you have to have good work ethic to achieve this goal. It s an obtainable goal and

Essay On Courtesan
The difference between a prostitute and a courtesan is clearly explained by the University of the
Chicago who edited the Selected Poems and Letters of Veronica Franco. It stated that the most
neutral word in mid sixteenth century Italy for a woman who made her living by selling her
sexual services was meretrice, for which an English equivalent would be prostitute. A word used to
insult such women, because it described the poorest class and most morally condemned category of
a sex worker, was puttana, in English, whore . Cortigiana courtesanhad a different meaning. It was
derived from cortigiano, meaning a man who served at court, so it had connotations of splendour

Being a successful courtesan meant independence, avoidance of financial and social subordination
within the traditional patriarchal family structure. It also meant substantial income for the
maintenance of a comfortable, well equipped household. And while as courtesans they may not
have had the social acceptability of proper women, they were respected and conferred status as
professionals in the business of pleasure. (Adler, 1988)
Florentino: Poetry over Family
Leona Florentino (1840 1884) left her son and her husband, who did not accept her writing, and
preferred spending the rest of her life in solitude in another area. Some have suspected that her
son censured his mother s erotic and rebellious production, and, consequently, we can never be
sure what indeed she wrote. Leona Florentino was born in Vigan in an ilustrado family and she
got a private education. She also wrote in Spanish, but mainly in her mother tongue Ilocano.
During the time of the 18th century, opportunities for women were not widely available or were
only limited because of the forces of a highly patriarchal society but despite this, one Filipino

The Pit And The Pendulum Short Story
The Pit and the Pendulum is a 1961 horror film directed by Roger Corman , starring
Vincent Price as Don Medina, or Nicholas, as the main character. The film was based on Edgar
Allan Poe s short story of the same name . The movie Poe fans might think that the short story has
some differences from the film, some reasons would be that the short story is said in first person
point of view, while the film has a bunch of different characters. Despite its differences, this movie
deserves to be tagged as a Edgar Allan Poe story because it contains suspense, the language and
some of the sentences they use is very poetic, and the storyline has horror.
The definition of suspense is a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may
happen . One can find suspense in the storyline of the film when Don, Catherine,
Francis, and Doctor Leon go down to the basement, where Elizabeth and the rest of the Medina
family was buried, in curiosity of whether Don Medina buried Elizabeth alive. Suspense is built in
the watching of Francis and Dr. Leon taking pic axes to the cemented and brick wall that stands
between them and Elizabeth s body. When they all finally get into the tomb, they see
Elizabeth s coffin, they start to open it up with a look of fear in their eyes. They finally get the
coffin open and see a skeleton with hair and it s hands looking like it s been trying to claw its way

Describe the events that brought the U.S. into World War I. Explain the conditions of the Treaty of

There were many reasons that the U.S. was brought into World War I. With the assassination
sparking the start of World War I, the U.S. didn t enter the war right away. In fact, the U.S.
waited about 3 years to enter the war. They wanted to stay neutral and thought that the war was
none of their concern. Shortly after the start of the war, Woodrow Wilson declared a policy of
neutrality. They wouldn t be involved on any side in the war, but would offer loans, trades, and
sell weapons to both sides. The U.S. stayed neutral up until 1917. They entered the war for many

How did new technology in World War Iinfluence warfare? Do you think this was (and continues
to be) a positive or negative influence. Explain your answer with specific examples and details.
New technology that appeared in World War I influenced war in many ways. There were many
new advances in technology in World War I. Major advances were things like aircraft, aircraft
carriers, tanks, and new weapons like the flamethrower. There were also small inventions and
advances like tracer bullets and mobile x ray machines. It influenced the war because it gave
new ways to attack enemies and gave the thought of having more power. With all of the
advances in weapons, it influenced to attack and try to overcome one s enemy. It also gave
leaders the thought that they had even more power with the new advances. I think that it was
both a positive and negative influence. I am more on the positive side because it helped to defeat
enemies faster and may have ended the war quicker. I am also against it because it influenced
more war, not less. In today s world, I think that again it s both positive and negative. I am more on

Healthcare Reform And Health Care Reform
As evidenced by the constant battle over health care reform, healthcare in the United States has
become a growing problem that must be addressed. While the main controversy seems to be the
politics of healthcare reform and whether the government should have total control, the one thing
that I believe should be the focus, is the quality of care that is embedded in the patient doctor
relationship. It s quite troublesome when large health insurancecompanies are swaying politicians to
vote for less healthcare regulation and higher premiums rather than focusing on the quality of care
and the importance of the patient doctor relationship, which has become overshadowed. That is
why I believe it is important to look at and consider how health care reform such as the PPACA and
policies implemented by private insurance companies have affected the doctor patient relationship
and thereby influenced the quality of medical care. One of the many reasons that I find this an
interesting and important topic is because I aspire to work in the medical field and the interaction
between patients and doctors is important for me to consider and determine how it has changed,
whether it be for better or worse, throughout the years as a result of added regulations and new
reforms.
A pivotal aspect of receiving quality medical care is being able to communicate your health
concerns and have confidence and trust in your doctor, which is essentially the doctor patient
relationship. Yet, this

Boeing History
William Boeing bought his first plane and taught himself how to fly in the early 1900 s and as
soon as he left the ground crashed his seaplane and nearly destroyed it. Once he destroyed the

The fascination with seaplanes directed him toward building his own seaplane with his friend G.C.

How Does Goal Displacement Affect Society
Everyone has those times when they wonder about where they are in life and if they truly are
doing the best they are capable of. That statement there is one of the most glossed over issues in
society. We are always told what needs to be done, and how to get it done in good quality and
time. Businesses and people in general are relying more and more on goaloriented ideals, which isn
t a bad thing, except for when it becomes a straight routine and monotonous. Then we have the
problem of goal displacement. Goal displacement is the process that occurs when the rules become
an end in themselves rather than a means to an end and organizational survival becomes more
important than achievement of goals. (Merton, 1968). Goal displacement is becoming... Show more

Whether that be as simple as a to do list or as complicated as a bucket list, or even having a

goal displacement. Although, by far this is the hardest portion of society to tell signs because
each person has very different lives, and goes about them differently too. But just the same, the
signs are there when you look at the public on a larger scale. So many people have an
outstanding debt, and yet, still spend money making that debt greater. They don t have much of a
choice considering the economy, right? Wrong. The world may run on money, but there are
programs that help manage debt while people still go about their lives, and I am not talking about
welfare. Welfare is where the goal displacement is happening for people, because it s a federal
program meant to help those in need until they can get back on their feet, not to become their
main income source. Don t let the rules become an end for yourselves in pursuing a higher status
or being a part of a better income bracket. Yes, it may take time and seem unattainable, but time is
all some have so why not use it for the good of yourselves and

Culture is something developed over time by a group of people not just created by one person.
Referring back to gender role in society this was not something that humans were born with but it
was created and reinforced over long period of time. Now more recently we can see these
behaviors changing where women work more, men help with chores, and the roles are starting
to merge. Culture also has a way of shaping one s view and values in the world. Culture also
shapes our behavior and our reason for doing certain things which is known as cultural behavior.
The difficult thing about cultures is that no two cultures are the same so it is not a one size fits
all. You have to take time to learn each culture and some cultures you will fit in better into than
others. This is like a work place have that has developed a culture that constantly changes as new
employees come and old one leave. If you are more laid back then you will fit into a work culture
that is more flexible then one that is tightly structured.

Employee Is Harmed At Work
In the event an employee is harmed at work and they meet all the requirements for workers
compensation they can get health advantages and salary for the amount of time they miss work.
With a specific end goal to get these advantages, the representative must lose their entitlement to
sue their manager for the offense of disregard. There are a wide range of arrangements, which
fluctuate from state to state. The workers that fit the bill for pay can get week after week
installments as opposed to being paid by their manager, which would go about as a type of
disability insurance. In the event that a worker needs compensation for monetary misfortune or
restorative costs, it would be utilized as medical coverage. Another structure that falls under
workers compensation is life insurance, which would be utilized if a laborer is killed during their
employment.
There are three defenses for an employer by law for worker related injury. These are the fellow
servant doctrine, contributory negligence, and assumption of risk. The fellow servant doctrine is
when another employee causes the worker to be injured and this would make the employer not
responsible for the incident. The contributory negligence is when an employee does not use
precautionary measures to be careful on the job. In this instance the employer would also not be
responsible for the injuries the employee got. The last defense for an employer is the assumption
of risk. This would be if the injured employee willingly

Brown Spot Disease
Controlled forest fires have been used to reduce the amount of insects and disease, improve
wildlife habitats, and reduce harmful fuels in our environment. These are just some of the things
they are used for, and few of the reasons why we should be in support of them. If you believe our
environment should live on, as healthy and for as long as it can, then controlled fires could be the
answer to many of nature s problems.
The use of controlled fires helps reduce the amount of insects and disease in that area. One
disease that is very dangerous is called Brown Spot disease. This disease is a fungal infection that
may seriously weaken and kill longleaf pine seedlings. These diseases seedlings stay in the ground

The Color Purple Inhumanity Essay
Throughout The Color Purple Walker highlights man s inhumanity to women through her female
characters, however, this is not their sole purpose. These characters are used to show Walker s
womanist and spiritualistic views as well as becoming highly complex human beings by the novel
s close. Although in the first part of the novel it is arguable that this gallery of women are merely
used as a device to expose inequality, objectification and cruelty, especially in with black women, in
early 20th Century society.
Walker makes man s inhumanity to women clear from the very first line of the novel. You better
not never tell nobody but God. It d kill your mammy clearly shows the emotional black mail that
Celie faces and sets the tone for a novel which focuses in on the abused in society. This
relationship with Alfonzo and Celie is fundamental in showing how women are abused by men in
this novel and is a main focus of the early letters. To Alfonzo, Celie adds little value to his life
other than to fulfil his sexual needs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She walks with a determination and does not let Albert verbally abuse her by accusing her of
lying about who is her baby s father. She is a big, strong, healthy girl who is independent and not
afraid to tell the male characters this. This determination is even seen in the way she walks:
look like the army change direction, and she heading off to catch up showing that not all women
are as suppressed as Celie and some do have a lot of confidence. Additionally when Harpo tries to
make Sofia obey his every word she is able to beat him up and protect herself, again going against
the stereotype that women need men. Sofia has a clear set of moral values and is not afraid to
defend these, thus showing that women do have power in this society, suggesting that reading The
Color Purple as a book about man s inhumanity towards women is a very limited

Jealousy In King Lear By William Shakespeare
Everyone at one point or another gets angry at others for whatever reason. Some people, when
angry, decide to take it out with violence where others tend to hold it within themselves. In the play,
King Lear, by William Shakespeare, characters are destroyed throughout the play, showing how
destructive the emotions of anger is to others. King Lear, Edmund and Gloucester show symptoms
of some form of madness either assumed or genuine through jealousy, overconfidence, and
manipulation; Lear s madness is completely genuine and is caused by himself and others, Edmund
s madness is fueled by jealousy and manipulation, and Gloucester s madness is mainly caused by
his son Edmund.

The audience begins to get an idea that Edmund may be plotting against his father and step
brother. In the next act, he manipulates and convinces Edgar to runaway from home and he
says My father hath set guard to take my brother/...Briefness and fortune, work!!! (2.1.16 18). He
is planning a very elaborate scheme to get Edgar to disappear from the kingdom for good, in
order for him to take the reigns at the helm. Edmund is also greedy for power and fame. The
audience pities Edgar because he has done nothing wrong and doesn t suspect Edmund to be so
cruel. In the following act, Edmund is foreshadowing the fall of his father, The younger rises
when old doth fall (3.3.25). He has gone borderline insane because he is willing to overthrow his
own faither. This creates suspense for the audience because he refers himself as the young and
referring his father as the old. Edmund s madness is genuine because if it was assumed he would
not be able to plan and execute those terrible plans to the people who love him, family. Jealousy and
manipulation can override people s conscious and make them do whatever it takes to get what they

Roles Of Males And Females Alike
Gender norms often support stereotypical ideas that help people form general assumptions about
the roles of males and females alike. In RyЕ«nosuke Akutagawa s In a Bamboo Grove, gender
norm accusations about Masago are demonstrated by the old woman, the robber, and Masago s
husband, Takehiko, as they are being questioned. These characters all believe that Masago does
not display any role in the murder of her husband. The fact that none of the characters in the story
would ever expect that Masago is an accessory to the gruesome act against her own husband is
unjustified because their focus on gendernorms misconstrue how Masago really is. Being one of
the characters to suggest Masago is innocent in the death of her husband, the old womanfails to
realize the truth when she assumes that Masago is hurt. The old woman explains, . . . the fate of
my daughter worries me sick (Akutagawa 2). By stating that she is worried for her own
daughter s safety, the old woman is implying that her daughter is also a victim who had nothing
to do with the murder of her son in law, Takehiko, because she does not believe that Masago,
being a woman, could have possibly played any other role in the crime other than the victim. The
old woman goes on to say, I hate that robber Tajomaru, or whatever his name is. Not only my son
in law, but my daughter . . . (2). In this statement, the old woman reinforces her belief that her
daughter, since she is a woman, is nothing more than a victim of the

The Government Was Broken Following The Watergate Scandal
Trust in the government was broken following the Watergate Scandal, the American people doubted
the people running the country. Someone had to step forward and take the leadership position
where he would face a people who lacked trust in the government. Whoever took up this position
was going to face unusual circumstances and difficult obstacles from the first day of his
presidency, and that man was Gerald Ford. Ford was the only president to not be elected into
office. After serving in Congress for 25 years, he was looked up to for his flexibility, and had a
reputation for being open and honest. When Nixon s vice president resigned, Ford became Vice
President since he was someone that both democrats and republicans would accept. Having said
that, Ford had been successful as a house minority leader, but as a president he proved to be only
average (Gerald). Ford rates as average due to his decision in the Nixon pardon, his actions during
a poor economy, how he handled domestic issues, and his foreign policies. He may have had good
ideas, but he had trouble implementing them. About a month following his inauguration into office,
Ford pardoned his predecessor, Richard Nixon, following the Watergate scandal. This sparked anger
among Americans who were doubting not only the government, but the constitution. People
believed that when Ford pardoned Nixon, it was proof that our system was broken. Rumors spread
discussing the possibility that a deal was made between the two

Romeo And Juliet s Decisions
Love has the ability to influence actions, and these actions can be good or bad. Love itself is
generally not thought of as something harmful, but many times it can impair one s ability to think
clearly, and therefore prompt destructive decisions. Love is very powerful, and in Romeo and Juliet
by William Shakespeare, it proves to not only lead to happiness, but also tragedy in familial,
platonic, and romantic relationships throughout the play.
Although we do not see much of the Montague family, the Capulet parents are at the center of the
conflict. In the beginning, it is their love for Juliet that makes them arrange her marriage to Paris.
Every parent wants the best for their child, and the Capulets are no exception. What they do not
realize is that this marriage is not what Juliet wants, and their love and inability to accept their
daughter s decision is what ultimately leads Juliet to fix the situation herself. The Nurse, who is
more of a mother to Juliet than Lady Capulet, eventually betrays Juliet as well. The Nurse,
thinking she is comforting Juliet, advises her to forget about Romeo and marry Paris because he s
more attractive and more attainable. Juliet accepts this as the final straw, and she goes to Friar
Lawrence for help, which causes her fated death. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

his death, even though he knew he would face the consequences. Romeo s exile was a direct result
of Mercutio s actions, and he was pulled away from his home, his family, and his beloved

receive high quality care and support. The Act also includes provisions in relation to well being of

Observation Of An Sociological Research
Observation is preferably one of the most commonly used methods of data collection, especially in
the sociological research. More often than not, this method is employed so as to gain the much
needed empirical information that is dependable in the sociological research undertakings. The
methodology is comprehensively employed in the sociological imagination concept as a viable tool
in the proper and reliable comprehension of social interactions.
It is in light of the above that this observation paper seeks to present my objective perspective in
the application of this definite data collection method in a view to fulfilling sociological research.
Noteworthy, the paper is presented as a qualitative description of the sociological factors in the
process of their interaction with each other in a non controlled environment. Finally, the paper
heavily adopts significant reflection of the C. Wright Mills conceptualization of the sociological
imagination and portrays the need of the observation being done with via a sociological lens.
Setting: To begin with, the observation was conducted at a public place within the university s
confines. Specifically, this was the campus centre. The timing of the observation was on a Friday
mid morning hours. This was informed by the fact that the duration is characterized by a substantial
student presence at the campus center for one reason or the other. This also meant that the
sociological interactions were bound to be more significant as the

Natural Gas Is A Rapidly Growing Section Of The Economy
Natural gas is a rapidly growing section of the economy. With a recent boom in production, more
people are putting a focus on the resource. Although it has been around for centuries, it is relatively
new in terms of mass production and shipment, especially in mainstream American attention. 2008
saw a rapid growth in both production and price, which expanded the economy in many small towns
throughout the United States. But, only a few years later, the price dropped while production did
not, and the decline started. Now, natural gasproduction is in a state of surplus, with some reports
stating that prices will remain low. But, with the push towards diversified energy portfolios and
renewables, the test is to see if natural gas can... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This natural gas was used to light street lamps and lamps used in homes. After Britain started
using natural gas commercially, the practice grew worldwide. The first well that was specifically
intended to extract natural gas in the United States was created in New York by William Hart in
1821, when he dug at 27 foot deep well.
In the 19th century, natural gas was used primarily for lighting. During this time period, the
efficiency of transporting natural gas was limited. In 1891 one of the first major pipelines was
constructed from Indiana to Chicago, but this pipeline was not very efficient. After World War
II, with new welding techniques, advances in pipe rolling and metallurgy, the reliability
improved. Also after the war, many miles of pipelines were built allowing natural gas to be
transported all over the country. The first wells used to drill for natural gas were vertical wells,
which were adapted from previous oil wells. The original process used to drill for natural gas
was called percussion drilling. Percussion drilling is when a heavy metal bit strikes the rock
repeatedly from a tall height. These depths were much higher than the first well built for natural
gas. The deepest known well using [percussion] drilling was 11,145 feet, completed in 1953 in
New York State. (Marcellus Shale ) Another form of drilling for natural gas was rotary drilling.
Rotary drilling uses a sharp, rotating bit

What Does The Dream Of The Rood Mean
The Dream of the Rood is a work which inspires one to think, to contemplate, and to begin to
better understand one s own faith. The Rood tells us of its life, from being a tree to being the
instrument in Christ s death to its visions after Christ s death, burial, and resurrection. I felt the
Rood s agony as it became an unwilling participant in the death of the Lord. The purpose of this
poem is to bring the glory back to God, reflecting on his goodness and his purposes in the earth.
The dreamer, who heard and recounted the Rood s story, ends with hope in Christ and a hope in the
future of everlasting life in heaven.
The Rood communicates to the dreamer that God recognizes this type of faith. For its tremendous
self discipline and submission to the Lord s will, the Rood gains a rich reward. Just as Christ s
obedience to his Father was recognized by God, the Rood s faithfulness is also acknowledged. He
stresses the notion that the gift of salvation is so great that it transcends human understanding. The
gift of redemption, which assures man pardon of his sins and never ending happiness in the
presence of his creator, is so immense that it cannot be fully understood in human terms. On the
basis of cultural and ethical concepts valid in this life, man may be able to comprehend part of the
mystery of Christ s self sacrifice, but not the fullness of God s grace. By twisting the theme of
service, the poet urges his audience to give to God the return gift that he demands,

made to believe in. When he starts heading home, his body starts hurting from all the running but
as soon as he hears Ultima s owl, he realizes it looked over him the whole time. As he arrived
home with only Ultima knowing he had escaped, he starts questioning her about what he viewed,
why the men killed Lupito and why Lupito wasn t saved. Even though she had dismissed his
questions, she had assured him that he would start to learn more. As he started to become mature,
he started feeling protected by Ultima as the light in his sky slowly disappeared. With Tony
walking through his life with no sense of direction, he tried to find answers from
God yet that star was nowhere to be found. He noticed that when his uncle had been cursed by one
of the Trementino sisters, Ultima was able to heal him, yet God couldn t. In my mind I could not

Theories Of Communicative Competence In Language Teaching
1.1 Preliminaries
Communicative language teaching (CLT) which was mainly developed from social science and
humanities beyond language teaching concerns, has been followed for nearly three decades.
Hymes from the linguistic anthropology (1971) and Habermas (1984) from social philosophy point
of view, proposed different notions of communicative competence in CLT to be used in language
teaching and assessment. Communicative competence, as Richards (1985) claimed, includes
knowledge of the grammar, vocabulary of the language, rules of speaking, knowing how to use and
respond to different types of speech acts and knowing how to use language appropriately. It is
believed that the goal of second language teaching should be communicative competence, and it
should include the ability to use language appropriately in social contexts in order to perform
communicative functions and the ability to combine utterances and communicative functions
according to the principles of discourse (Loveday, 1982; Canale Swain, 1980). ... Show more

According to Hymes in 1960s, to function successfully in society, an individual must be able to use
appropriate language in a given situation and understand the social language hints of others, and
also an individual must have the ability to combine one s own social knowledge with contextual
information to understand the intended meaning of someone s utterance which is known as
pragmatics. Pragmalinguistics that is part of pragmatics, applies to more linguistics features of
pragmatics; in other words, it mostly focuses on the way which linguistic forms of a language are
used to obtain certain pragmatic purposes (Thomas,

  • 2. Benefits Of Subsidizing Stem Classes College is where you will find many opportunities which is why people should attend college. Many high paying jobs are out there waiting for someone with the degree they desire to come forth. Not only will college make you a better person, but will also take you on an unforgettable journey. Some people may not understand the logic between right, and wrong and what is better than to learn about philosophical ideas, if the new republic was to flourish and endure, it required, above all, an education (Singletary 10). Subsidizing STEM classes is a bad idea because lack interest will occur, many jobs will be at stake, and Artswould be too expensive. In the Education: Does College Still Matter short passage, Tabarrok thought it would be best that the people who choose STEM degrees, should have subsidized taxes. There is little justification for subsidizing sociology, dance, and English majors (Tabarrok 5). This would not be beneficial because it discourages the people who wanted to chase their dream career. For example, an intelligent female may wantto be an English teacher, but knowing that her journey to get that education will cost drastically more, than she will choose a different career, leaning more into a STEM career. I think it is selfish for Tabarrak to only want a degree in STEM while he belittles sociology, dance and English, when society needs those subjects just as much. When those students who choose the unimportant degree path realize that their taxes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As for Gibbons and Vanderbilt, the two lowered their rates, applied services, and also tried out new technologies which all help lead them to become hugely profitable. And in 1829, Vanderbilt left Gibbons to increase his own business. Vanderbilt created his own steamship company. With a fleet of boats and a budget of $30,000 or roughly $775,000 today, Vanderbilt successfully established a company along the Hudson River. He used his usual tactic, reduced fare prices, to stir away any competitors. He then expanded between New York and New England and Long Island. What helped his business to flourish was through customer s loyalty. Because Vanderbilt was known to have reliable, safe and cheap steamboats, Cornelius Vanderbilt s company skyrocketed. In 1830, Vanderbilt entered the Hudson River market and competed against Steamboat Association. Due to Vanderbilt s success, Steamboat Association purchased his Hudson River company for $150,000 in total. Because of the success he had, Vanderbilt went to Long Island for another round. His business tactic and customer loyalty served him in the right way. The Gold Rush, where many go to California in hopes for gold, allowed Vanderbilt to begin an ocean going service, between West Coast and Central America. • 4. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi And The Congress Of Gandhi On October 2, 1869, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born into a religious Hindu family. His father, Karamchand Gandhi, already had previous sons and daughters from his four other wives, with Gandhi marking his last son. As a child, Gandhi showed great interests towards family devotion and sacrifices. He would often slip away from his overly crowded house and into shops on the street. Because of Hindu law, Gandhi was wed to Kasturbai Makanji at age 13 14. Eventually, as Gandhi became older and more mature, he started showing passion towards his studies. He was offered a one year contract for working in a South African Indian law firm. On his way to Pretoria, a white man objected to the fact that Gandhi was traveling first class. Gandhi refused to move, claiming he had a first class ticket. He was quickly thrown off the train and was forced to spend a night on the station platform. After a successful and fulfilling year as a lawyer, Gandhi s trip to South Africa was almost at an end. At his farewell party, Gandhi spotted a column in the newspaper stating that the government in Natal was preparing to seize Indian s right to vote. Disheartened by India s current condition, Gandhi decided to stay longer and gather signatures for a petition against the discriminatory actions. Within two weeks, the pacifist collected ten thousand signatures and founded the Indian Congress of Natal. Believing that written words would make a bigger impact, Gandhi published two pamphlets that spoke out against the new government movement. Without delay, Gandhi promptly returned to India to fetch his family. In 1906, Gandhi attempted a mass nonviolent civil disobedience campaign to counteract the South African Transvaal governments new restrictions and regulations. He dubbed it Satyagraha, meaning firmness in truth , but his attempts failed and he was promptly arrested. His actions, however, left a lasting impact, leading to multiple rebellions and protest. In 1913, Gandhi made a negotiated a compromise with General Jan Christian Smuts, which ended poll taxes for Indians and recognized non Christian marriages. Later on in his life, Gandhi supervised many other nonviolent acts of rebellions, such as mass marches and boycotts. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

To summarize, in Ellis first chapter called The Duel, illustrates the feud between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. The famous duel which was illegal at the time, had taken place on July 11.1804 in Weehawken, New Jersey. To add, the two men did not like each other because of the fact that Burr was a prideful and ignorant man who went against his Democratic Republican party. To explain, the reason for the Burr not liking Hamilton was that he had told other members in the House that Jefferson was the better candidate for President. Burr, who could not get over the fact that Hamilton did such a thing, called Hamilton out. Hamilton could not turn down the duel because he did not want to be perceived differently. Ellis mentioned the duel was under the system of code duello where ten paces were taken and then shots were fired. • 9. Symbolism In Lot Of The Lottery By Shirley Jackson Lot of the Lottery Brittney Hale ENGL 1302 Ms. Mary Elle Young 10 03 17 Shirley Jackson s The Lottery , is a story that is filled with symbolism. The author uses symbolism to help her represent the human race as cruel no matter how righteous he or she may see themselves, or how perfect their way of life may seem to be. The story is very effective in making the reader question the unnecessary nature humans express, especially when it comes to tradition or violent behavior. Jackson effectively expresses her beliefs concerning mankind s true nature that is commonly masked behind tradition. The author portrays how inhumane and cruel people can be when it comes to their values and everyday life. Jackson presents the theme of this short story with a major use of symbolism. Symbolism is shown throughout the setting of The Lottery, objects, contestant s names and numbers. The author makes it well known to the reader that the black box is the central theme of the passage. The box symbolizes, at first, that something more ominous is to come. Jackson s choice of the color black is a perfect example for the story, it symbolizes death and complete darkness. A town person s fate lies in the hands of this inanimate object. The black box is an excellent representation of the sacrifice the citizens are willing to give to keep up with traditions. The author not only used the color of the box to symbolize what was happening in the town, but also the condition of the box. The no longer completely black but splintered box portrays the decaying of the original religious ideals the lottery (Jackson 230) was founded upon. Even though the citizens felt uneasy about the box, and would even keep their distance from the stool with the black box on it (thoughtco). They do not question the origin of the black box, but they accept it as a way of life. The names of the character play a significant role in developing the story. Quite a few of the names are more obvious than others, such as Delacroix, which translates as of the cross . Others, such as Adams, make the reader think more in depth about them. One of the main characters, Mrs. Delacroix, appears often in the story. She is a companion of Tessie, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

At the beginning of the dialogue Meno poses many inquiries about virtue. He has many skillful exchanges with Plato on the definition of virtue, which is when this passage comes along. Socrates: ...So now I do not know what virtue is; perhaps you knew before you contacted me, but now you are certainly like one who does not know. Nevertheless I want to examine and seek together with you what it may be. (Meno 80d) to which Meno replies Meno: How will you look for it, Socrates, when you do not know at all what it is? For example, if we were to inquire What is that statue? , there is no chance a recollection of the past can answer this, but when we look at the name plate at the bottom and learn whom and why this statue was created, we have effectively learnt about the statue. This is a more synthetic answer and question. As you can see, there is a plethora of these type of questions that the idea of recollection cannot cover. What Plato s recollection covers is more conversely known as our innate ability to induce and infer based on past experiences. This can be seen in the slave boy example, as the slave boy learns from experience Socrates: But if it is two feet also that way, it would surely be twice two feet? Yes (Meno 82d). It can be said that the idea of recollection only covers analytical answers. That is, questions and answers that can be reduced down to a base case and built on towards the goal are what an analytical question or answer would be. An idea that encompasses this, for example, is putting parallel two rulers of the same size beside each other and understanding that they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 12. Reflection On The Cradle Catholic With over half of the students in Xavier University s undergraduate program identifying as Catholics, I was not surprised that I ended up with a partner who is Catholic. However, I was surprised to hear how into the Catholic faith my partner was and how much it has influenced him as a person. My partner was Max Foreman, and just like myself, he has been a cradle Catholic his entire life. Cradle Catholic is a term used to basically say that since he was born he has been Catholic because his parents were Catholic and wanted to pass their faith down to him. As a Roman Catholic you are expected to attend Mass every Sunday and every holy day of obligation. For just one hour a week we go to listen to the word of God, pray to God, and receive the Eucharist, but only if you have had your First Communion. Not only did Max attend Mass every Sunday, he was an active part of it because he was an altar server. Basically, an altar server is the priest s first hand man while Mass is being celebrated. When I asked Max to expand more on his experience as an altar server he told me that it allowed him to really become closer with God and realize that the Eucharist truly is more than just a piece of bread and wine but that it fully is the actual body and blood of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Along with being an altar server at Mass, Max also participated in several different volunteer opportunities. Some of these programs were run through the church and some were just everyday ... • 14. Analysis Of Ian Mcewan s The Saturday Essay In this analytic essay, I will be exploring the use of literary language in the novel Saturday by Ian McEwan and how with the use of narration and imagery can under shadow a simple piece of literature. Ian McEwan uses a contemporary character to show the day in a life of a Londoner, with the aid of the narrator s voice throughout, there is a lot of symbolic imagery and strong statements. The narrator appears omniscient thought out this text, the effectiveness of this allows us to be emotionally attached to just Henry, and not allowing much use of imagination. Wonderfully Ian McEwan challenges the reader at moments of conflict, with morality in mind, to then following the view of Henry. Is the lierarture theme of following this character a metaphor for London? I believe this choice of narration is to cover up the sub lining of this piece of literature, which is power and identification of London through a single character. The use of the vocabulary in this novel is rather meticulous, every detail finely researched, a piece of fiction that educates the reader and questions. With the use of sleeping, working, entertaining themselves he writes humanly relatable actions, as if we were in fact a machine, a routine sequence that sub textually describes the character Henry, and with that in place, describes London. Henry goes about his day in a perfect circle . Henry s thoughts describe his accident as a trivial matter p82 an inconvenience, which is shown when he disregards ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. The Character Of Don Giovanni Don Giovanni is the protagonist of one of the most famous Mozart s operas. Mozart s protagonist is based of the Spanish tale s character named Don Juan, a famous womanizer. According to Cambridge Dictionary, a hero is defined as a person admire for bravery, great achievements, or good qualities, [1] it can be said that Don Giovanniis brave, at his standards has some great achievements, and has some good qualities such as fearlessness, courage, and firm to his beliefs. One of the main reasons why some people label Don Giovanni as a villain is because at the beginning of the operaDonna Anna claims that Giovanni has raped her and then calls him a murder when he kills her father. When taken a closer look at those specific scenes, such claims are less credible. Instead of being afraid like a usual rape victim, she seems furious. The claim of rape gets even more questionable when Donna Anna s first recrimination is betrayer, instead of rapist. It gives the impression that she appears to be angry at the fact that he is leaving her. Describing Don Giovanni as a murder also seems to be inaccurate. It has to be clarified that killing someone in a duel is not a murder. Donna s father was the one who challenged Don Giovanni. He clearly knew that the only outcome was for one of them to die, and that there was a chance that it could be him. It is also important to take into account that Giovanni repeatedly refused to fight. Music helps to describe the characters, Every character stands out in the musical picture. [3] It can be an indication of how he is portrayed as a hero. Mozart shows Don Giovanni as courageous, strong and confident. When analyzing music, it can notice that Giovanni gets great music. Mozart provides Don Giovanni with an aria that explicitly embraces his philosophy of enjoying life: the famous champagne aria, Finch han dal vino. [2] This music is presented as full of life and celebration which means that Don is shown as the force of life. It can be also be deduced who Don is by contrasting his character with other s. Mozart also tells us who Don Giovanni is by telling us who he is not. [3] Leporello is depicted as a character who is a whiner, coward, and a follower. In one of the final ... • 16. Psalms Literary Analysis When reading the Psalms the reader should actively read as in participating in a sport. My professor of English Dr. John Burkett instilled this into the class as we studied the Psalms. This sets the stage when actively reading, the reader is engulfed by the text and is then alongside with the psalmist: in feeling, emotion and even to the landscape where the psalmist is. Thus, actively reading motivates the reader to clearly understand the meaning of the text that is read. The word is described in the Dictionary of hermeneutics by Dr. James D. Hernando reads: Meaning is a word used differently by scholars in their various approaches to interpretation . David writes the Psalms for the reader to understand the fuller meaning as in the Sensus plenior . However David uses figurative language he is writing with the readers in mind. Figurative language refers to all uses of words that are metaphorical or symbolic in nature, conveying a meaning different from their common, literal sense. An example of David s figurative language is You have kept count of my tossing s; put my tears in Your bottle; are they not in Your book (Ps. 56:8 ESV)? The bottle is a figurative meaning of Godremembering all his tears. God does not need a bottle for remembrance this is a way for David to convey to his reader s Gods eternal loving memory will remember their every teardrop. When diving into this nugget of truth, God s love for us is unfathomable. The depth of love from David s point ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Walking onto the sidewalk, I examine the tool of choice in my hand: a 39 inch longboard with fat, red wheels that pray for an excursion. As I enter the street, my mothers voice penetrates my head: Look both ways! Being the faithful son that I am, my eyes dart in both directions to assure myself a tragedy isn t imminent. Another good tip is to put on nap time music, that always helps the children at the daycare fall asleep faster. The last thing I would suggest is to rock your child yo sleep. Not in a ricking chair or anything, but to sit by their bed and gently rock their body back and forth or rub the child s back. This is what we do at the daycare to get all the children asleep. 2. There are multiple standpoints that a reader can take in explaining various events that occur throughout the book, as well as different ways that the characters in the book interpret these events. The author never fully clarifies many questions that the story generates so as to leave the readers with the opportunity to answer them based on their own personal experiences and beliefs. How the descendants of a slave woman came to inherit the land of slave owner is unclear because different interpretations of the event that occurred in 1823 seem to have been developed from generation to generation. For instance, some say Sapphira smothered Bascombe Wade in his very bed, while others say she persuaded Bascombe Wade in a thousand days to deed all his slaves every inch of land in Willow Springs and poisoned him for his trouble (Naylor 3). These different interpretations apparently lead to the development to the use of the phrase 18 23 as a slang term. For some, the phrase seems to represent death and destruction whereas others use it synonymously with deception. But no matter what actually happened in 1823, the fact that so many views are accepted by the community conveys to the reader the importance of open mindedness in reading the book. It s quite troublesome when large health insurancecompanies are swaying politicians to vote for less healthcare regulation and higher premiums rather than focusing on the quality of care and the importance of the patient doctor relationship, which has become overshadowed. Culture also has a way of shaping one s view and values in the world. Culture also shapes our behavior and our reason for doing certain things which is known as cultural behavior. The difficult thing about cultures is that no two cultures are the same so it is not a one size fits all. You have to take time to learn each culture and some cultures you will fit in better into than others. This is like a work place have that has developed a culture that constantly changes as new employees come and old one leave. In the 19th century, natural gas was used primarily for lighting. During this time period, the efficiency of transporting natural gas was limited. • 53. What Does The Dream Of The Rood Mean The Dream of the Rood is a work which inspires one to think, to contemplate, and to begin to better understand one s own faith. The Rood tells us of its life, from being a tree to being the instrument in Christ s death to its visions after Christ s death, burial, and resurrection. I felt the Rood s agony as it became an unwilling participant in the death of the Lord. The purpose of this poem is to bring the glory back to God, reflecting on his goodness and his purposes in the earth. The dreamer, who heard and recounted the Rood s story, ends with hope in Christ and a hope in the future of everlasting life in heaven. The Rood communicates to the dreamer that God recognizes this type of faith. For its tremendous self discipline and submission to the Lord s will, the Rood gains a rich reward. Just as Christ s obedience to his Father was recognized by God, the Rood s faithfulness is also acknowledged. He stresses the notion that the gift of salvation is so great that it transcends human understanding. The gift of redemption, which assures man pardon of his sins and never ending happiness in the presence of his creator, is so immense that it cannot be fully understood in human terms. On the basis of cultural and ethical concepts valid in this life, man may be able to comprehend part of the mystery of Christ s self sacrifice, but not the fullness of God s grace.
