Dr Strangelove Satire
Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, which I will be
referring to as Strangelove, is a political satire directed by Stanley Kubrick that was released in
1964. The Film displays the absurdity of the Balance of Terror during the cold war and the ease of
which a nuclear holocaust could occur, whilst also critiquing the absolute power of politicians
whom have the means to enact one. Strangelove communicates these themes with its use of satire
utilising comedic characters and situations to highlight the ridiculousness of cold warpolitics.
However the implications of using comedy to translate sensitive themes of war and human
extinction are polarising, raising the question is there anything you can t joke about? Assessing
how other texts deal with the same subject matter and analysing people s emotional response to
satire, we will investigate the effectiveness of Strangelove s ability to communicate an anti war
message.

The National Football League on Legal Hits
The national football league has stiffened its policy on legal hits. The hit zone has shrunk, while
player frustrations have grown. The policy is enacted in an effort to reduce the number of
concussions in the game of football. The enforcement of these rules has strayed away from
being all about safety. The policy on hits has created a divide among its players and fans alike.
The policy of hits being enforced so strictly has had a significant impact on the sport. The
sociology of the NFL and the rule itself drive this argument. By stepping on the field as an NFL
football player, it is accepted that it is very dangerous. The players make enough money to make
the concussions worth it. Profiting from the fine money for these hits has caused the NFL to be
enforcing these rules unethically, the rules and the impact they have had on the sport have been
detrimental to football. The NFL has created a new acceptable hit zone which is very small.
Limiting a players area to deliver a hit has created a difficulty for them. Players have had to
completely adjust their approach to tackling. Players are becoming very frustrated with the new
rules, for example Pittsburgh Steelers player Ryan Clark states ...give a guy who is 200 pounds,
like myself, a 2 foot area to stop a guy who is 240 or 250 running at full speed. They might as
well just take us off the field... (Patra 1). This is evidence that NFL players are actually getting
frustrated with these rules. Ryan Clark is one of the most

Kingdom 3 Domains
Brief Genetic History of the Kingdoms
Many biologists segregate prokaryotes into kingdom Bacteria and Archaea. There are three
domains, Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya. Biologists have inferred that the three domains are the
three divisions of life. Some biologists continue to evaluate the origin and relationships of the
domains. They have found that evolution is not always linear. Among the course of evolution,
genes are passed down vertically and swapped laterally from one generation to another. Horizontal
gene transfer or lateral gene transfer is when genes exchange amongst organisms in one taxon and
related organisms in another taxon. This process is common and can appear in several ways like
the exchange of DNA between different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Archaea do not have the simple RNA polymerase characteristic like the rest of bacteria. They have a
combination of bacteria like and eukaryote like genes indicated by gene sequencing (Martin,
2008). Just like the rest of bacteria, cocci and rods are the most common shapes among
archaebacteria. There are also shapes like branched and flat, but no evidence yet of spirochetes
or mycelial forms. The plasma membrane lipids of the bacteria are made up of glycerol diethers
that form lipid bilayers. Tetraethers form lipid monolayers. The cell wall constituents are very
diverse but peptidoglycan is always absent. Some even contain only five layers, others combine
the S layer with polysaccharides or proteins. At times, there are archaebacteria that lack cell
walls. There are inclusions present and gas vacuoles. Their external features consist of flagella,
pili, and pilus like structures. It is rare for the archaebacteria to have capsules or slime layers. The
S layer may be the only component outside the plasma membrane. Within the archaeal membrane
consists of isoprene units, which are five carbon. They have ether linkages instead of ester
linkages to glycerol. Some even have diglycerol tetraethers. Within some of the archaebacteria, the
cell envelopes have varied S layers attached to the plasma membrane. It contains
pseudopeptidoglycan, which is a peptidoglycan like polymer. It also

Use Of Literary Elements In Stephen King s On Writing
Authors use literary elements and techniques as tools to convey meaning. These devices are the
means by which authors bring richness and clarity to a text. They express moods or feelings that
allow the reader to connect with the writing. In On Writing, the author, Stephen King makes use
of literary elements to tell his story. The techniques King uses are effective in portraying vivid
images and feelings in the reader s mind. One example in which King uses such elements is early
in the book. King writes, Mary Karr presents her childhood in an almost unbroken panorama.
Mine is a fogged out landscape from which occasional memories appear like isolated trees .... the
kind that look as if they might like to grab and eat you (17). In the first sentence, King is
describing the delightful grasp Mary Karr has on her childhood. He depicts her memory as an
unbroken panorama which creates the image of a beautiful, wide view. The figurative language
here is successful in expressing the totality of Mary Karr s memoir, which King uses to
differentiate his memory with. Next, he describes his memory as a fogged out landscape , which
conveys that his recollections are hazy and disjointed. King mentions earlier that he lived an odd,
herky jerky childhood, and moved around a lot in his earliest years. The figurative language he
uses is an another way of making this clear in the reader s mind. Then, King uses the simile, like
isolated trees to illustrate a barren image, which enforces

The Heros Journey In Paul s Case By Willa Cather
The hero s journey is also evident in Paul s Case by Willa Cather. Paul s life is a constant
disappointment to others around him. He gets in trouble at school and at one point, his teachers
air their grievances with him. The narrator describes that, One way or another, he had made all
his teachers, men and women alike conscious of the same feelings of physical aversion (Cather
44). Paul s teachers believe something is wrong because of his disdain and contempt for
learning. Paul s defiance is a result of his love for his fantasies of the high life . He hates his life
at home on Cordelia Street and he wishes to live the lives of performers; the life with money. In
Elizabeth Hick s criticism, she explains what Paul s case exactly is. His mannerisms at school,
from his avoidance of being touched to his dandy dressing... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Amidst the myriad of his depressed thoughts, he bitterly realizes, money was everything, the
wall that stood between all he loathed and wanted . Paul s escapade was fueled by money, lies,
and dreams. His realization of the end leads his adventure to a screeching halt. Paul s moment of
truth lies in his final moments before his death. He comes to terms with the idea of money he
cannot escape. Loretta Wasserman points out, ...this is the epiphanous moment of the story,
confirming his vision as authentic and his fidelity is to is justified (Wasserman 206). Paul s
journey is heavily focused on escaping Cordelia Street, and Paul s ultimate mistake was realizing
he couldn t escape to Adriatic water or Algerian sands . Paul s epiphany is essentially realizing
that without money, his dreams are useless, and the only way he could ever get what he wanted is
by lying and deceiving. This elemental realization is what causes him to kill himself, and why his
quest is considered a

Essay On Progressive Era
The Progressive Era The Progressive era was an age in time which people tried to solve Gilded
Age problems through individual and group action. Progress in the word progressive means
towards freedom and justice. Progressives were people who believed that the problems society
faced (poverty, violence, greed, racism, class warfare) could best be addressed by providing good
education, a safe environment, and an efficient workplace. Progressives were mostly concerned
with the social problems that revolved around industrial capitalists society. Companies and later
corporations had a problem that had been around at least since the 1880s. They needed to keep

Tao Qian, Also Known As Tao Yuan-Ming, Was A Chinese Poet
Tao Qian, also known as Tao Yuan ming, was a Chinese poet of the Six Dynasties period. Tao
was well versed in the classics of Confucianism and Daoism, which is evident in his poetry.
However, he wasn t known for the extent of his knowledge but for his distinctive voice as a poet
of transition and reclusion. Throughout his life, he held and resigned several minor posts before
his ultimate decision to renounce public life and return to his gardens and fields (Owen 1996,
312). As the founder of the poetry of fields and gardens, Tao s writing revolves around natureas a
philosophy and as a way of life that embodies the simplicity of living in recluse, away from the
chaos of high society. He uses the philosophy of nature not only to retell... Show more content on

Many of Tao Qian s poems illustrate a life of farming and drinking wine, encompassing themes
that urge its audience to remove themselves from official life, move to the countryside, and take
up a cultivated life of drinking wine, writing poetry, and avoiding the complicated aspects of life
such as working in high society. Earlier scholars believed that Tao was neither Confucian nor
this worldly, neither egocentric nor defiant, neither gallant nor stubborn, Tao is contented, free
from the unnatural, he has got all Nature can offer (Lu 2017). It is evident in Tao Qian s poetry
that he utilized nature as a means to escape what reality had to offer, corruption and political
instability, as opposed to his own idea of utopia or a simple, easy life in recluse. Tao s An
Account of Peach Blossom Spring, has remained a famous piece of Chinese writing throughout
history about the discovery of an otherworldly utopia in which the populace led an ideal existence
in harmony with nature, unaware of the outside world. Unlike reality at the time, where the
tension between the state and the individual had developed fully (Owen 1995, 309), Tao s Peach
Blossom Spring is a tranquil magic otherworldly world that idealized a world of freedom and
simplicity. He describes this world as

Yahweh Messiah
Ultimately, it comes down to the establishment of a monarchy through Saul for Israel, and later
through David s lineage Jesus came as a messiah. While, those cultures like the Philistines,
Phoenicians, and Egyptians all were led by kings, and they were worshiped as gods, however
those Israelites needed a kingdom and a place to rest the Ark of the Covenant, so they established
Jerusalem as Yahweh s kingdom. Many of these early leaders of the Israeliteswere very sinful, and
got away with many evil deeds, like murder, adultery, and rape, but the worst sin seems to be lack
of faith in Yahweh. In fact, Jesus came and lived as the anointed one living a sinless life, and

from the sins of the flesh and his empire is unimaginable. God used Saul to establish the
beginning example of what was to be a vast empire, but he needed an example of how not to lead
so that future leaders were warned against it. Further, with King David and his sins ended up with

The Ultimate Motive In Voltaire s Candide
The slaying of a mythical beast, a battle between opposing cavalries, the search for prosperity and
riches. A quest generally has a stated motive, such as the events stated, and a more clandestine
motive, often not revealed to the audience until the end of the story. In Voltaire s Candide, while the
apparent intent for Candidethrough most of the story is to rescue the damsel in distress, the ultimate
motive reveal takes Candide traversing insurmountable obstacles. The quest format utilized by
Voltaireis vital to the story, The format allows Voltaire to destroy the naivete of the audience and
satirize ideas that were the foundations of the lives of men.
When the audience reads Candide, they first learn about his upbringing. Living comfortably in the
lap of wealth, and learning from renowned philosophers, Candide cradles the world in his palms.
While learning Pangloss s Everything is for the greater good philosophy, Candide absorbs a
plethora of naive wisdom. Candide s cushy bubble crumbles, however, once he kisses the Baron s
daughter, Cunegonde. Candide is thrust into the unrelenting reality of the harsh world when the
Baron banished him from his estate. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

himself. While witnessing Pangloss s death, Candide proclaims If this was the best of possible
worlds, what then are the others? This statement shows the seed of doubt as been sowed into
Candide s mind. While this seems to be a setback in his quest, it actually advances him closer to the
actual goal: self knowledge and comprehension about suffering. This statement also shows the
satirical nature of this novel. The third and largest crack in the philosophy and the candor of the
audience is the posed question If everything is for the greater good, and we live in the best
possible worlds, why is there still suffering in this

Theoretical Framework
This section includes the exploration about the factors that affecting recidivism in prison. The
theoretical framework in this study based on Social Learning Theory, Social Control Theory and
Labelling Theory. These theories would be justified in an integrated manner to explain the factors
that influence recidivism in prison. In this research, self recidivist, family and social environment

Jim Sinegal
In 1983, Jim Sinegal s idea for a new business was a place where there were no signs identifying
isles, no advertising, no way for customers to bag their purchases, and before customers would
be allowed to shop, they had to pay an annual fee. That business is Costco and during Jim s 30
years as founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), he grew that business into the fourth largest
retailer in the country. Looking back on the legacy Jim left behind when he retired, it is clear that
Jim is one of the most visionary and ethical leaders of our modern times. First, we will look at
how Jim implemented his vision while demonstrating idealized influence by setting aside his self
interests and gaining the trust of the customer for the good of the company. Then we will explore
Costco s code of ethics that employs Dr. Toner s principles of owing, ordering, and oughting.
Finally, we will explore how Jim s leadership style has impacted me and influenced my leadership.
Visionary Leader
Jim Sinegal was a visionary leader as demonstrated by his departure from the generally accepted
retail business practices in favor of a transformational leadership style that gained the trust of his
customers. Jim founded Costco with the idea that no product would be marked up by more than 15

Southern Gothicism In William Faulkner s A Rose For Emily
A Rose For Emily During the late eighteenth century, gothicism became a popular literary genre.
Years later, William Faulkner introduced the idea of Southern gothicism, which combined elements
of Southern regionalism and gothicism. A fine example of Southern gothicism is Faulkner s short
story, A Rose For Emily. William Faulkner
was born in New Albany, Mississippi, on September
25, 1897, into a Southern family. As a child, Faulkner demonstrated exceptional artistic abilities
in drawing and poetry. However, he was considered an indifferent student compared to his
classmates and peers. In 1915 he dropped out of high school to work for his grandfather and
began submitting art and poetry to the University of Mississippi yearbook. During World War 1,
Faulkner was accepted into the Royal Canadian Air Force to become a pilot, but the war ended
before he could experience any combat. He returned to his hometown to attend the University of
Mississippi where his first poem, L Apres midi d un faune was published in August 1919. Later in
the year, the Mississippian published his short story Landing in Luck.
Faulkner later returned to Oxford, where he worked as a university postmaster for some time. In
1924, he published The Marble Farm and moved to New Orleans a year later to associate with
other writers. He later published his first notable success, Sartoris in 1929. Later that year he
married his high school sweetheart, Estelle Oldham and published what is known as his greatest
work, The Sound and the Fury, followed by A Rose for Emily in 1930. By the mid 1940 s,
William Faulkner s work was well known across the country. In 1959 Faulkner suffered serious
injuries after a horse riding accident and later died of a heart attack on July 6, 1962. Faulkner in
his works used pieces of his own life and his family s history to create stories and plots. By the
time of his death, Faulkner published almost twenty novels and, several volumes of short fiction,
and two volumes of poetry (Tim).
A Rose for Emily was first published on April 30, 1930 in the issue of Forum. It was Faulkner s
first short story that was published in a major magazine. The story starts with the death of Emily
Grierson. It is divided into

Advantages And Disadvantages Of PDMS Based Microfluidic...
The earliest microfluidic devices were made mostly made from silicon since the technology for
patterning silicon wafers had already been developed by the electronics industry for its usage in
microelectronics and micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS). Silicon however has the
following disadvantages: (1) It is not optically transparent in the wavelength range used for
optical detection; (2) Its conductive properties make it unsuitable for applications that involve
electro kinetic flow to transport fluids; (3) Proteins tend to bind to silicon non selectively which
rules out its application in immunoassays [Bange et al, 2005] There has recently been a lot of
interest in PDMS based microfluidic systems due the numerous advantages it offers compared
to glass and silicon [Kong J et al, 2009; Tanyu Wang et al, 2013 and Alphonsus et al, 2010].
PDMS is easy to fabricate, flexible, optically transparent and can irreversibly bind to itself
through the application of oxygen plasma. Another major advantage is that PDMS based devices
can be fabricated in normal laboratory conditions as opposed to clean room conditions that are
expensive to maintain and access. PDMS is also hydrophobic that is desirable for... Show more

a school board meeting that runs past midnight. He not only provides for his family and animals,
he provides for the nation. It is proof, based on all these responsibilities, that a farmer is
dependable and hard working. So, Dodgemade the Ram truck to take care of the farmer. Dodge
would like you, the consumer, to know that their Ram truck is also dependable and hard
working, like a farmer. Because we the nation rely on such a dependable individual to feed us,
Dodge manufactured a dependable vehicle for the farmer in order to fulfill his tasks. According
to this commercial, the farmer is someone who can do all these things, yet take care of his family,
while supplying the nation with food and livestock. Dodge is using this commercial as a way to
associate the mighty farmer , who people depend on, with their mighty truck, which is dependable
for heavy farming needs. The commercial utilizes select photographs, some of which feature a
Dodge Ramtruck being used on the farm, to portray the daily life of a farmer. These pictures give
us the impression that the truck is designed to be strong enough to clear trees and heave bails , and
yet provide a gentle enough ride for

24 Baby Gorillas Research Paper
On Saturday, the Rwandan government named 24 baby gorillas, as part of its annual Kwita Izina
naming ceremony that takes place in Rwanda s Volcanoes National Park every year. The event,
largely considered a popular tourist attraction, has been taking place for the past 11 years. This
year, in a scene The Guardian describes as reminiscent of Planet of the Apes, a dozen performers in
hairy gorilla suits took the place of the 24 baby gorillas, which were not present at the ceremony.
The naming ceremony pays homage to a Rwandan tradition celebrating the birth of a child. Aside
from its role as a tourist attraction, the event sheds light on the importance of conservation in the
country. Today, the World Wildlife Fund estimates that there are

other manufacturers that offered a similar product. Or if Sam rejected offers from other store
chains and the one he made the verbal agreement with decides to not follow through and purchase

However, this made Sam believe that it was acceptable for him to manufacture the item from the

although Sam verbally agreed to ship the 1,000 units to the chain store, there hasn t been an
exchange of goods or service. Therefore, there is no business being conducted from the
apartment and Sam s landlord doesn t have the right or obligation to evict for a business that is

however we were able to defend that there is no violation because the exchange of goods and

Odd Couples By Anna Muraco
In Odd Couples, Anna Muraco interviews intersectional friendships between gay men and straight
women as well as straight men and lesbian women. The author is an Assistant Professor of
Sociology at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Muraco is careful to incorporate
gender, sexual preferences, and age each time she mentions interviewees. Most of the intersectional
friendships involve a gay man and straight woman; however, she makes a great effort to interview
friendships between a straight man and lesbian woman, though sometimes these friendships may be
difficult to find. The author aims to challenge two large assumptions. The first assumption she
confronts is that men and women are fundamentally different. The second assumption is... Show

She then identifies the importance of friendships in general and how these bonds are formed. There
is discussion of same sex, heterosexual friendships and same sex, same orientation friendships.
These topics were the precursor of delving into the discussion of intersectional friendships and how
Muraco conducted this study. According to the author, intersectional friendships challenge a variety
of social norms. Previous research shows that straight people who are in contact with gay men and
lesbians have a favorable attitude towards them; this favorable attitude is meant as in acceptance,
not tolerance. Furthermore, most of the dyad friendships interviewed were very close friends, if not
best friends. In multiple cases, the gay man was often incorporated into the straight woman s family.
The straight women offer to be a surrogate mother before they themselves are married and trying for
children of her own. On the contrary, Muraco further explains the stereotype that all gay couples
want children. Another way that these friendships are beneficial to the individual is that they
provide great financial support for each other, which is usually a familial function. The media tends
to depict these intersectional friendships generally as gay men and straight women that are the best
of friends who go shopping and clubbing together. Though this gender norm was common within
the study, there are still other friendships that are regularly overlooked. The

Analysis Of The Robot Invasion By Charlie Gillis
In the article The Robot Invasion by Charlie Gillis, it discusses how robotics will become an
everyday part of society, how robotics will be used in labor and manufacturing instead of humans
doing jobs that are hazardous, tough, and grimy. The author argues the world will be occupied
with these robotics in the upcoming future which will alter the job industry and change how
chores in households will be done. Making humanity worry whether or not they will lose their
jobs or be killed by a rouge robot. The planet changing as robot technology develops more and
takes over jobs is not an irrational dispute. For decades, engineers and sci fi writers have forecast
a time when autonomous machines would become enough like living creatures to share our
homes and work spaces, performing the three Ds of human labor . The statement has a good
take to reel in the attentiveness of the readers, drawing them in with what they have seen on TV
and media. Robots have been very popular in sci fi shows and movies, which has made humanity

robots will take over the earth and harm humanity which is a great way to show that people will
have a difficult time accepting the advancement in robotic technology being used in everyday life.

Economic Theory Of Stimulating Aggregate Demand Essay
The United States is better off economically today than it was in 2008 when the Great Recession
hit. The government had to act fast to minimize job losses, stabilize the housing and credit markets,
and get consumers back to work and spending money. The fiscal stimulus programs were effective
in doing just that by lowering unemployment and stabilizing the stock market. There are a few
things, however, that are intriguing.
Based on what we have learned in our economic theory of stimulating aggregate demand through
fiscal stimulus, the side effect is typically inflation (Schiller, 2013). The United States has not seen
inflation like what the economists predicted with the latest inflation rate at 0.2% (Coin News
Media Group, 2015). Despite all of the billions of dollars pumped into the economy, the Fed has
been unable to sustain the desired 2 percent inflation rate, which they believe is indicative of
economic growth (Mason, 2015). And, while the job market appears to be healthy with
unemployment hovering around 5.1%, 27.7 percent of the unemployed, or 2.2 million, have been
jobless for 27 weeks or more (Ferreira, 2015). Those who are employed part time because they aren
t able to find full time employment and those who have given up looking for employment, even
after their unemployment benefits have expired, aren t counted in the unemployment numbers
(Ferreira, 2015). According to a survey done by Pricewaterhouse Coopers, an increasing share of

Descriptive Essay On A Tridaday Morning
Wednesday Morning
It is a typical Wednesday morning, the middle of the week, and I m running late to school. It s
7:43 and most students are making a mad dash to beat the morning bell, others linger around the
green courtyard, catching up with friends, dreading going to class. I make my way through the
maze of students, and I catch my best friend, Lauren, in the stairwell at the top of A building, both
on our way to the history class we have together. We do not say a word, just share a look that says
we want to go home and we need more coffee, before we head into class.
Our class is always in chaos in the mornings. The boys compare what they have for breakfast
today and discuss last night s baseball game play by play, while the girls get together and share a
bit of gossip they heard last night and begin to make plans for the weekend. Today was no
exception. Just as the tardy bell rings, I sit in my seat at the corner of the room and notice that
Kaylin, who sits behind me, is crying. Her face is red and blotchy and she is staring at her phone. I
choose to act like I do not notice, because it must have been a rough morning and I would not
want anyone bothering me if I were in her position. Then Abbie, who sits in the desk beside
Kaylin, comes in a few minutes late, also crying. Lauren and I exchange confused glances, and I
suddenly realize our teacher, Mrs. Hendrix, isn t in the room. How strange, I think to myself, she
is almost always here to greet us when we walk in the

Mental Changes In Macbeth
In the play Macbeth, the main character s mental state due to the prophecy changes over time.
William Shakespeare portrays Macbeth as different figures though the play. And his main changes
are mostly caused by people around him and also himself hesitating. At the beginning the witches
said Fair is foul/and foul is fair (1/1/11), so even the prophecy seems positive to Macbeth,
everything has been established already. One of the main element of Macbeth s downfall is his
mentally weakness.
In Act one scene 3, when Macbeth and Banquo meet the three witches for the first time and knows
the first prophecy about Macbeth being the King, Macbeth was not excited about the fair news:

cannot bear this change in such a short time. He started to have the same delusion as he had when
Duncan died. When brains were out, the man would die,/ And there an end.But now they rise
again (3/4/95 96). Macbeth is consumed by his fear. When he sees Banquo s ghost, he has already
lost all sense of reason. Such a huge change in such a short time clearly shows the main reason that
causes Macbeth s downfall to the audience, in such a mental condition, he seems like another

The Effects Of Nickel On Ash Toxicity
Several metals have been tested for their role in fly ash toxicity. Although universally high
toxicity has been attributed to vanadium [Bhatnagar, 2004 and Liu et al., 2005], nickel is
generally not far behind [Salnikow et al., 2004 and Kurowska Bal, 2010]. Nickel is a primary
contributor to the inhalation cancer risk because of its relative high concentration in fly ash and
the known carcinogenic potency of its sub sulfide forms (Ni3S2) [Dreher et al., 1997]. Huang et al.
(2015) suggest, that oil fly ash surface metals (like vanadium) may be the key determinants in the
induction and/or amplification of allergic responses.
The metal fraction of oil ashes has been shown, in both in vivo and in vitro studies, to increase
lung injury and cytotoxicity (Dreher et al., 1997; Dye et al., 1999; Gavett et al., 1997; Kodavanti et
al., 1998; 2001), increase lung inflammation (Kodavanti et al., 1998; 2001), increase airway
reactivity (Gavett et al., 1997; Lambert et al., 2000), alter cytokine production (Dye et al., 1999;
Carter et al., 1997), and increase oxidative stress (Ghio et al., 2002b; Kim et al., 2003; Lewis et al.,
2003)
Kadiiska et al. (1997) reported that the vanadium, nickel and iron in oil ashes produced a significant
influx of neutrophils and proteins indicative of acute inflammation, and significant increases in the
formation of free radicals in rates. Vanadium may play the most significant role in the inflammatory
response produced by oil ash. Dreher et

Relationship Between Animals And Human Culture
When was the last time you were down on your knees, worshipping a cat? What about burning a
sacred goat as a gift for the gods? In our contemporary American culture, you may not see very
much of this, but believe it or not, it was a vital part of some cultures in ancient societies.
Throughout history, animals have appeared to be a significant component of culture, either
economically, religiously, spiritually, mythically, and other ways. Animals are of high significance
and importance to culture, and without their rich symbolic essence, perhaps various cultures would
have died out. In this essay, I will explore the tightly bonded relationship between animals and
human cultures through multiple perspectives and practices around the world: in the Native
American culture, Hindu religion, ancient Egyptian society, and the worship of animals through
sacrifice in ancient Greece. Native Americans are notoriously known for obtaining a culture that is
widely sustained off of both revering and resourcefully using animals. Indigenous American tribes
heavily relied upon animals for survival, and without that ingenuity, their culture would have likely
failed to survive. Animals had to be treated properly because they could represent spirits, as well as
plants which could give evidence of the supernatural and the land which could reveal God. Tim
Murphy, Ph.D., wrote in his essay, Probing the Relationship between Native Americans and
Ecology. Therefore, this closely bound relationship

Biomedical of Health
The biomedical model of health states that the individual is not responsible for their illness and
that the mind and body work independently from each other. Ogden J, (2004) However, for
example, in the case of an individual who is suffering from an eating disorder i.e. bulimia, this
indicates that there is a clear link between the mind and body due to the sufferer vomiting after
ingesting food; therefore resulting in the sufferer being responsible for their physical illnessdue to
psychological illness. The biomedical model also suggests that treatment is to change the physical

Engel p, (cited in Munitz H, et al datastarweb online 2000) wrote a responding letter to Mr

I believe that the biopsychosocial model of medicine is a more human and emotional model that
aims to understand and help the individual as a whole.
The application of psychology to health is beneficial to the individual by emphasizing the medical,
psychological and social factors that contribute to the cause and effects of health and ill health.
Health professionals can analyse all the factors that can affect the individual s well being and aim
at treating the person as a whole. (i.e. Medical professionals can treat the medical factors,

Analysis of Richard Iii s Winter of Discontent Speech
William Shakespeare s Richard III is a historical play that focuses on one of his most famous and
complex villainous characters. Richard III or The Duke of Gloucester, who eventually becomes
king, is ambitious, bitter, ugly and deformed. He manipulates and murders his way to the throne
and sets the tone for the whole play with his very first speech, which is the opening of the play.
Richard opens with the lines now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son

Since Richard cannot do anything about his deformity and ugliness he turns his bitterness to
ambition and lays the groundwork for his plan to betray King Edward IV. Richard tells the
audience, plots have I laid, inductions dangerous, by drunken prophecies, libels and dreams, to
set my brother Clarence and the King in deadly hate against the other; and if King Edward be as
true and just as I am subtle, false, and treacherous, this day should Clarence closely be mewed

these lines, Richard reveals his plan that he will turn Clarence and King Edward against each
other so Edward will banish Clarence to the tower because he believes Clarence will be his
murderer. Richard will do this through declaring a prophecy that this will be so. Richard
explains that this will work because King Edward is as just as Richard is treacherous and
Richard will use that against King Edward to cause his and Clarence s demise. It is not known
whether the character Richard would have revealed more about his plan this early in the play
because he is interrupted by Clarence. Richard ends the speech with the lines, dive thoughts down

Reasons For Russia s Involvement In World War I
Russia s Involvement in World War I
In the year of 1914 the Russian government is starting to see Germany as the main threat to its
nation. The reason behind this was because of Germany s decision to form an alliance with
Austria Hungary and Italy; this became to be known as the Triple Alliance. This new Alliance
meant that if any of the allied countries were to be invaded by Russia or France they would
support each other in battle when in need. However the initial spark of Russia s involvement in
World War Ibegan with honoring its treaty with Serbia. On June 28th 1914 Franz Ferdinand the

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Hardwood...
There are many choices of hardwood flooring for home owners. This is why it is important that
you choose the right type. Although there are varieties that are more affordable, they may come
with their own drawback. In this post, we discuss the major types of hardwood flooring available,
together with their advantages and disadvantages so that you can make a wise choice when you go
out to buy them.
Bamboo
In the strictest sense of the word, bamboo is a grass and not a wood. However, it is mostly taken to
be wood. The strands of bamboo are normally glued together so as to create engineered planks or
solid strips, just like it is with hardwood.
It has three grain patterns which are flat, woven and vertical. Flat grains tend to show the plant s
characteristics of intermittent growth nodes; woven types come with sinewy patterns while vertical
grains have closely packed strands that produce fine grain appearance.
Pros
Bamboo is durable and tough.
Also, it is considered sustainable because the plant from which it is harvested can be easily grown
and regenerated.
Cons
Even being a natural material, there are some environmental concerns about the adhesive used in its
construction process (regarding toxicity).
Maple hardwood flooring
This can increase the beauty of any room. These floors are extremely durable.
Pros
Affordability: it is very affordable since it is largely available.
Great color: Maple flooring has warm hue and light color that can fit almost any room.

Madison is a landmark Supreme Court case. Marbury v. Madison is one of the most influential and
groundbreaking legal proceeding in the history of the United States. The Marbury v. Madison case
was the first of its kind. Prior to Marbury vs. Madison, it was unclear whether the U.S. Supreme
Court had the power to determine the constitutionality of laws or what should happen when the
Constitution and a law were in conflict. Consequently the theory of every such government must be
that an act of the Legislature repugnant to the Constitution is void. With these words written by
Chief Justice Marshall, this case is significant because for the first time, the Supreme Court declared
an act of Congress unconstitutional because it was contrary to the Constitution. This decision was
the foundation for the Supreme Court s power of judicial review, the power by which the Court
could determine the constitutionality of laws passed by Congress. Marshall stated in the majority
opinion Court must either decide that case conformably to the law, disregarding the Constitution, or
conformably to the Constitution, disregarding the law, the Court must determine which of these
conflicting rules governs the case. This is of the very essence of judicial duty. Marshall is saying
that the Judicial has the decision on the two opposing laws and thus creating Judicial Review.
Nothing in the Constitution gave the Court this specific power. Marshall, however, believed that the

Cod Chapter Summary
I chose the book Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World. As the title suggests, and
the author, Mark Kurlansky, explores, a simple fish, more specifically, cod, has an importance that
has been proven throughout history. The prologue is set in Petty Harbour, a town in
Newfoundland and tells a story of three experienced fishermen, Sam, Leonard, and Bernard. They
are participating in the Sentinel Fishery which was an attempt to help scientists and fishermen
work together to measure the supply of cod. Their boat was to catch as many cod as they could
and measure and tag them. A second boat was to catch exactly 100 cod and open them to identify
their age and sex. For three men who fishingwas their life hobby, you would think this would...

As outlined in this assignment, a hazard is defined as an object, condition, or process that threatens
individuals and society in terms of production or reproduction. I would like to suggest that the
process of overfishing is a hazard that this book unfolds throughout history. Overfishing is simply
when cod are caught at a faster rate than they can naturally reproduce. The author suggests that man
is part of the natural world and the two can t separate themselves, and in this case the activity of
overfishing is driven by man. Cod provided a source of protein and a financial stability to many
nations. As populations increased, the demand for cod increased, and consequently the industry
became competitive in nature. Because of this, fishing for the Atlantic cod became commercialized,
and although nations modernized at different speeds, the goal for all was to catch more. As early as
1815, the French used the technique of longlining. Although it was expensive because of the
amount of bait that was used, it was the first advancement from handlining and allowed for
numerous fish to be caught at once. From there, bottom dragging became popular and although it
was an effective method of catching a lot of cod at once, it was also damaging to other fish that
got caught in the net. In addition to improved techniques, curing methods advanced and freezing
methods were developed. Technology advancements included the chronometer and telegraph
which both improved navigation, and sonors and spotter aircraft aided in spotting cod schools.
Fishing boats advanced from oars and sails to steam powered to motorships. All of these
advancements aided in the overfishing, and consequently became a hazard. Scientists argue that
you can t predict nature and there is no way to tell if and when, as well as, how long it will take
to replenish the codstock. For this reason, I suggest overfishing to be a hazard. The depletion of
cod has

A Midsummer Night s Dream Essay
A Midsummer NIght s Dream A Midsummer Night s Dream is a classical play written by
William Shakespeare. It is one of his more eccentric piece of work. The play is about the
struggle of love between four essential characters: Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius , and Helena.
However, it is not quite that simple. The play is quite confusing. In Midsummer Night s dream
the play take place in two realms fairy realm and human realm, two of the three main settings.
Another one of the settings take place inside the cottage of a carpenter Peter Quince. At one point
during the play the realms converge Making it difficult for the audience to distinguish the
difference between reality and illusion within the play. This is one of the many reasons the play
is interesting or appealing. Also to add on, the symbolism of the tile and moon, and comedic
elements within the play serves engage and intrigue. The beginning of the play begins in Athen

The Nature Of The Mountain Men
The mountain men were known for their explorations and fur trapping in the Rocky Mountains and
the great plains from about 1810 to 1880. Outside of their explorations and trapping, the Mountain
Men also created Emigrant Trails which allowed Americans of the East to settle in the West. To
some they [mountain men] symbolized the rugged freedom of the frontier, to others, anarchy and
degradation. The debate surrounding mountain men was, at its core, really a debate about the
nature of the West: was the frontier the site of healthy independence or dangerous dissolution?
Through the rising and crashing of the trappers rendezvous in the 1840 s and the scarce enemies
that the mountain men had, Christopher Kit Carson, Jim Bridger, and James Jim Beckwourth
continued to lead the explorations and trappings in the Rocky Mountains making clear that those
men were there promoting healthy independence across the frontier during the 1840 s. For
starters, the Mountain Men sold their fur and created the Rocky Mountain Rendezvous in order to
make profit. Essentially, the rendezvous was a gathering that happened each year in various
locations where trappers were able to sell their fur and hides as well as replenish their
supplies(Sage). These events were known to be lively places that welcomed all (Barkin). The ones
that typically showed were free trappers, Indians, native trappers wives, children, and even travelers
that had been passing through(Barkin). James Jim Beckwourth, a

Hofstede s Cultural Traits And Its Impacts On Leadership
Another study from Oke (2013) revealed some similar verdicts on the Nigerian managers. This
study was for the construction professionals, and it indicated that most of the Nigerian managers
use the autocratic leadership style. At the same time, there is a strong sense of result oriented
approach among these managers as they concern primarily with the task at hand; and do not tend to
cater for the long term development of those under their command (Oke, 2013). The author further
commented that democratic and participative leaderships had not been observed amongst the
Nigerian managers.
Regarding Chinese managers also tend to be autocratic when they fulfill their leadership
responsibilities (Sharkey and Murray, 2015). Chinese people are known for their respect for the
authority, and it is often in the Chinese culture that a follower should not directly express their
thoughts but to follow instructions (Ma and Tsui, 2015). Another trait of the Chinese leaders is the
tendency to think carefully before making a decision as they would like to make sure such would
lead to long term benefits whilst the decision is to be deemed appropriate by others (Ma and Tsui,
2015).
In order to better understand the underlying factors contributing to cultural specific leadership
styles and to therefore discuss the cross cultural management/leadership issues this essay will now
refer to Hofstede s cultural dimension model.

Tackling The Root Cause Of Health Disparity
The article, Tackling the Root Causes of Health Disparities Through Community Capacity Building,
written by Anthony Iton, explains the relationship between an individuals income and their overall
health. Because of the underlying fact that wealthier individuals lead an all over healthier life, those
whom fall under the povertyline are at severe health disadvantages.
One instance of racial disparity is the education system. According to Tackling the Root Causes of
Health Disparities Through Community Capacity Building, state funding for school districts differs
from the wealthy to poor communities. Despite clear evidence showing that high poverty school
districts need more funding to reach the same standards as wealthy communities, it doesn t

Catalytic Hydration
Catalytic hydration produces a lot of direct and indirect pollution. The process requires tremendous
amount of energy to heat up the mixture of ethene and steam up to the reaction temperatures.
Ethene is obtained by a cracked fraction obtained from oil. Over the years there have been many
environmental disasters from drilling and transporting oil. On the 20th of April 2010, the
Deepwater Horizon drilling platform exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. This lead to 4.9 million
barrels of oil being spilled into the Gulf of Mexico which resulted in the worst environmental
disaster in recent times with millions of aquatic animals being affected (Kinver, 2011). Although
the process of hydration has small impact of the environment due to the energy demands, its
indirect pollution has had a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These are due to the high temperature and operating pressure of the reaction as well as the dangers
linked to the reactants, catalyst and products. The likelihood of an event happening is minimal due
to various emergency shut down systems and safety standards built into the reactor. However, PPE
such as protective clothing, self contained breathing apparatus and eye protection must be worn due
to serious nature of an actual incident happening.
Fermentation has little to no environmental impacts. It is carbon neutral process and new emerging
technologies will completely remove the carbon dioxide by product, therefore reducing its very
minimal environmental impact even further. Hydration on the other hand, has a minor direct affect
on the environment and a major indirect affect on the environment. Hydration uses lots of energy to
supply the heat necessary for the reaction which contributes to global warming. However, the
feedstock is obtained from oil which has had numerous environmental disasters due to its mining
and transportation.
As for global ethanol production, fermentation is clearly the more preferred

Essay about What Really Happened to the Lindbergh Baby
What REALLY happened to Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr.? Patience Smith Intro to CJ System
CJ101 02 Prof. Dan Bilodeau On June 22, 1930, Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr. was born to the
infamous Lucky Lindy and his wife, Anne. When he was a mere 20 months old, he was
kidnapped from his crib in the house where parents and staff were in the house beneath him. The
kidnapping occurred from a second story window in a rainstorm where no one heard a thing! Here
in lie the questions that we will discuss in this paper. The police suspected an inside job from the
beginning. Whomever carried out the abduction knew the whereabouts of the nursery and the
parent s plans for the particular evening in questions. With the residence being in... Show more

The New Jersey police became heavily involved in a battle over the jurisdiction of the case. Another
questionable problem with the evidence was that the child was pinned into his crib so that he
wouldn t move at night and somehow, when the child was abducted, whomever took him, didn t
move the pins or even touch the pins to get him out of the bed. There were no fingerprints on the
ladder, not even where the person that made the ladder would have left fingerprints, showing that
everything had been wiped clean. Then there was the ransom note that was written with grave
misspellings and horrible Germanic construction. The next question involved is with the courts, the
adjudication, arraignment and the preliminary hearing. Throughout all of the investigations, they
came down with one principle suspect. A Bronx carpenter by the name of Bruno Richard
Hauptmann. He passed a $10 gold certificate at a gas station from the ransom money and this led to
his subsequent arrest, trial and finally the death penalty. Ultimately, the police found about $14,000
or more of the ransom money at the suspect s home. In newspapers, the case appeared open and
shut. Hauptmann had entered the United States as a stowaway, with a prison record in Germany
for robberies. (www.lindberghkidnap.proboards.com) With no fingerprints that linked Hauptmann to
the crime, nothing but circumstantial evidence in the case and the handwriting expert said that

  • 2. Dr Strangelove Satire Dr Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb, which I will be referring to as Strangelove, is a political satire directed by Stanley Kubrick that was released in 1964. The Film displays the absurdity of the Balance of Terror during the cold war and the ease of which a nuclear holocaust could occur, whilst also critiquing the absolute power of politicians whom have the means to enact one. Strangelove communicates these themes with its use of satire utilising comedic characters and situations to highlight the ridiculousness of cold warpolitics. However the implications of using comedy to translate sensitive themes of war and human extinction are polarising, raising the question is there anything you can t joke about? Assessing how other texts deal with the same subject matter and analysing people s emotional response to satire, we will investigate the effectiveness of Strangelove s ability to communicate an anti war message. General Jack Ripper initiates Wing Attack Plan R because he believes that communists want to pollute the Americans Precious bodily fluids . General Ripper single handily sends 10 B 52 bombers on course to Russia, armed with nuclear warheads set to destroy all life in Russia. Once the president and his hierarchy are informed about General Ripper s actions, their attempts to withdraw the attack are futile. • 3. The National Football League on Legal Hits The national football league has stiffened its policy on legal hits. The hit zone has shrunk, while player frustrations have grown. The policy is enacted in an effort to reduce the number of concussions in the game of football. The enforcement of these rules has strayed away from being all about safety. The policy on hits has created a divide among its players and fans alike. The policy of hits being enforced so strictly has had a significant impact on the sport. The sociology of the NFL and the rule itself drive this argument. By stepping on the field as an NFL football player, it is accepted that it is very dangerous. The players make enough money to make the concussions worth it. Profiting from the fine money for these hits has caused the NFL to be enforcing these rules unethically, the rules and the impact they have had on the sport have been detrimental to football. The NFL has created a new acceptable hit zone which is very small. Limiting a players area to deliver a hit has created a difficulty for them. Players have had to completely adjust their approach to tackling. Players are becoming very frustrated with the new rules, for example Pittsburgh Steelers player Ryan Clark states ...give a guy who is 200 pounds, like myself, a 2 foot area to stop a guy who is 240 or 250 running at full speed. They might as well just take us off the field... (Patra 1). This is evidence that NFL players are actually getting frustrated with these rules. Ryan Clark is one of the most ... • 4. Kingdom 3 Domains Brief Genetic History of the Kingdoms Many biologists segregate prokaryotes into kingdom Bacteria and Archaea. There are three domains, Archaea, Bacteria, and Eukarya. Biologists have inferred that the three domains are the three divisions of life. Some biologists continue to evaluate the origin and relationships of the domains. They have found that evolution is not always linear. Among the course of evolution, genes are passed down vertically and swapped laterally from one generation to another. Horizontal gene transfer or lateral gene transfer is when genes exchange amongst organisms in one taxon and related organisms in another taxon. This process is common and can appear in several ways like the exchange of DNA between different ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Archaea do not have the simple RNA polymerase characteristic like the rest of bacteria. They have a combination of bacteria like and eukaryote like genes indicated by gene sequencing (Martin, 2008). Just like the rest of bacteria, cocci and rods are the most common shapes among archaebacteria. There are also shapes like branched and flat, but no evidence yet of spirochetes or mycelial forms. The plasma membrane lipids of the bacteria are made up of glycerol diethers that form lipid bilayers. Tetraethers form lipid monolayers. The cell wall constituents are very diverse but peptidoglycan is always absent. Some even contain only five layers, others combine the S layer with polysaccharides or proteins. At times, there are archaebacteria that lack cell walls. There are inclusions present and gas vacuoles. Their external features consist of flagella, pili, and pilus like structures. It is rare for the archaebacteria to have capsules or slime layers. The S layer may be the only component outside the plasma membrane. Within the archaeal membrane consists of isoprene units, which are five carbon. They have ether linkages instead of ester linkages to glycerol. Some even have diglycerol tetraethers. Within some of the archaebacteria, the cell envelopes have varied S layers attached to the plasma membrane. It contains pseudopeptidoglycan, which is a peptidoglycan like polymer. It also ... • 5. Use Of Literary Elements In Stephen King s On Writing Authors use literary elements and techniques as tools to convey meaning. These devices are the means by which authors bring richness and clarity to a text. They express moods or feelings that allow the reader to connect with the writing. In On Writing, the author, Stephen King makes use of literary elements to tell his story. The techniques King uses are effective in portraying vivid images and feelings in the reader s mind. One example in which King uses such elements is early in the book. King writes, Mary Karr presents her childhood in an almost unbroken panorama. Mine is a fogged out landscape from which occasional memories appear like isolated trees .... the kind that look as if they might like to grab and eat you (17). In the first sentence, King is describing the delightful grasp Mary Karr has on her childhood. He depicts her memory as an unbroken panorama which creates the image of a beautiful, wide view. The figurative language here is successful in expressing the totality of Mary Karr s memoir, which King uses to differentiate his memory with. Next, he describes his memory as a fogged out landscape , which conveys that his recollections are hazy and disjointed. King mentions earlier that he lived an odd, herky jerky childhood, and moved around a lot in his earliest years. The figurative language he uses is an another way of making this clear in the reader s mind. Then, King uses the simile, like isolated trees to illustrate a barren image, which enforces ... He gets in trouble at school and at one point, his teachers air their grievances with him. The narrator describes that, One way or another, he had made all his teachers, men and women alike conscious of the same feelings of physical aversion (Cather 44). Paul s teachers believe something is wrong because of his disdain and contempt for learning. Paul s defiance is a result of his love for his fantasies of the high life . Loretta Wasserman points out, ...this is the epiphanous moment of the story, confirming his vision as authentic and his fidelity is to is justified (Wasserman 206). Paul s journey is heavily focused on escaping Cordelia Street, and Paul s ultimate mistake was realizing he couldn t escape to Adriatic water or Algerian sands . Tao was well versed in the classics of Confucianism and Daoism, which is evident in his poetry. However, he wasn t known for the extent of his knowledge but for his distinctive voice as a poet of transition and reclusion. Throughout his life, he held and resigned several minor posts before his ultimate decision to renounce public life and return to his gardens and fields (Owen 1996, 312). Earlier scholars believed that Tao was neither Confucian nor this worldly, neither egocentric nor defiant, neither gallant nor stubborn, Tao is contented, free from the unnatural, he has got all Nature can offer (Lu 2017). It is evident in Tao Qian s poetry that he utilized nature as a means to escape what reality had to offer, corruption and political instability, as opposed to his own idea of utopia or a simple, easy life in recluse. Tao s An Account of Peach Blossom Spring, has remained a famous piece of Chinese writing throughout history about the discovery of an otherworldly utopia in which the populace led an ideal existence in harmony with nature, unaware of the outside world. Unlike reality at the time, where the tension between the state and the individual had developed fully (Owen 1995, 309), Tao s Peach Blossom Spring is a tranquil magic otherworldly world that idealized a world of freedom and simplicity. While, those cultures like the Philistines, Phoenicians, and Egyptians all were led by kings, and they were worshiped as gods, however those Israelites needed a kingdom and a place to rest the Ark of the Covenant, so they established Jerusalem as Yahweh s kingdom. Many of these early leaders of the Israeliteswere very sinful, and got away with many evil deeds, like murder, adultery, and rape, but the worst sin seems to be lack of faith in Yahweh. A quest generally has a stated motive, such as the events stated, and a more clandestine motive, often not revealed to the audience until the end of the story. In Voltaire s Candide, while the apparent intent for Candidethrough most of the story is to rescue the damsel in distress, the ultimate motive reveal takes Candide traversing insurmountable obstacles. The quest format utilized by Voltaireis vital to the story, The format allows Voltaire to destroy the naivete of the audience and satirize ideas that were the foundations of the lives of men. McCauley Air Force Senior Noncommissioned Officer Academy November 5, 2014 Instructor: HptFw Rainer Lichtsinn Jim Sinegal In 1983, Jim Sinegal s idea for a new business was a place where there were no signs identifying isles, no advertising, no way for customers to bag their purchases, and before customers would be allowed to shop, they had to pay an annual fee. That business is Costco and during Jim s 30 years as founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), he grew that business into the fourth largest retailer in the country. Looking back on the legacy Jim left behind when he retired, it is clear that Jim is one of the most visionary and ethical leaders of our modern times. First, we will look at how Jim implemented his vision while demonstrating idealized influence by setting aside his self interests and gaining the trust of the customer for the good of the company. Then we will explore Costco s code of ethics that employs Dr. Toner s principles of owing, ordering, and oughting. Finally, we will explore how Jim s leadership style has impacted me and influenced my leadership. Visionary Leader Jim Sinegal was a visionary leader as demonstrated by his departure from the generally accepted retail business practices in favor of a transformational leadership style that gained the trust of his customers. • 17. Southern Gothicism In William Faulkner s A Rose For Emily A Rose For Emily During the late eighteenth century, gothicism became a popular literary genre. Years later, William Faulkner introduced the idea of Southern gothicism, which combined elements of Southern regionalism and gothicism. A fine example of Southern gothicism is Faulkner s short story, A Rose For Emily. William Faulkner was born in New Albany, Mississippi, on September 25, 1897, into a Southern family. As a child, Faulkner demonstrated exceptional artistic abilities in drawing and poetry. However, he was considered an indifferent student compared to his classmates and peers. In 1915 he dropped out of high school to work for his grandfather and began submitting art and poetry to the University of Mississippi yearbook. During World War 1, Faulkner was accepted into the Royal Canadian Air Force to become a pilot, but the war ended before he could experience any combat. He returned to his hometown to attend the University of Mississippi where his first poem, L Apres midi d un faune was published in August 1919. Later in the year, the Mississippian published his short story Landing in Luck. Faulkner later returned to Oxford, where he worked as a university postmaster for some time. In 1924, he published The Marble Farm and moved to New Orleans a year later to associate with other writers. He later published his first notable success, Sartoris in 1929. Later that year he married his high school sweetheart, Estelle Oldham and published what is known as his greatest work, The Sound and the Fury, followed by A Rose for Emily in 1930. By the mid 1940 s, William Faulkner s work was well known across the country. In 1959 Faulkner suffered serious injuries after a horse riding accident and later died of a heart attack on July 6, 1962. Faulkner in his works used pieces of his own life and his family s history to create stories and plots. By the time of his death, Faulkner published almost twenty novels and, several volumes of short fiction, and two volumes of poetry (Tim). • 21. Advantages And Disadvantages Of PDMS Based Microfluidic... The earliest microfluidic devices were made mostly made from silicon since the technology for patterning silicon wafers had already been developed by the electronics industry for its usage in microelectronics and micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS). Silicon however has the following disadvantages: (1) It is not optically transparent in the wavelength range used for optical detection; (2) Its conductive properties make it unsuitable for applications that involve electro kinetic flow to transport fluids; (3) Proteins tend to bind to silicon non selectively which rules out its application in immunoassays [Bange et al, 2005] There has recently been a lot of interest in PDMS based microfluidic systems due the numerous advantages it offers compared to glass and silicon [Kong J et al, 2009; Tanyu Wang et al, 2013 and Alphonsus et al, 2010]. PDMS is easy to fabricate, flexible, optically transparent and can irreversibly bind to itself through the application of oxygen plasma. Another major advantage is that PDMS based devices can be fabricated in normal laboratory conditions as opposed to clean room conditions that are expensive to maintain and access. The author is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. Most of the intersectional friendships involve a gay man and straight woman; however, she makes a great effort to interview friendships between a straight man and lesbian woman, though sometimes these friendships may be difficult to find. There is discussion of same sex, heterosexual friendships and same sex, same orientation friendships. These topics were the precursor of delving into the discussion of intersectional friendships and how Muraco conducted this study. According to the author, intersectional friendships challenge a variety of social norms. Previous research shows that straight people who are in contact with gay men and lesbians have a favorable attitude towards them; this favorable attitude is meant as in acceptance, not tolerance. Furthermore, most of the dyad friendships interviewed were very close friends, if not best friends. In multiple cases, the gay man was often incorporated into the straight woman s family. The straight women offer to be a surrogate mother before they themselves are married and trying for children of her own. On the contrary, Muraco further explains the stereotype that all gay couples want children. Another way that these friendships are beneficial to the individual is that they provide great financial support for each other, which is usually a familial function. The media tends to depict these intersectional friendships generally as gay men and straight women that are the best of friends who go shopping and clubbing together. Though this gender norm was common within the study, there are still other friendships that are regularly overlooked. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 27. Economic Theory Of Stimulating Aggregate Demand Essay The United States is better off economically today than it was in 2008 when the Great Recession hit. The government had to act fast to minimize job losses, stabilize the housing and credit markets, and get consumers back to work and spending money. The fiscal stimulus programs were effective in doing just that by lowering unemployment and stabilizing the stock market. There are a few things, however, that are intriguing. Based on what we have learned in our economic theory of stimulating aggregate demand through fiscal stimulus, the side effect is typically inflation (Schiller, 2013). The United States has not seen inflation like what the economists predicted with the latest inflation rate at 0.2% (Coin News Media Group, 2015). Despite all of the billions of dollars pumped into the economy, the Fed has been unable to sustain the desired 2 percent inflation rate, which they believe is indicative of economic growth (Mason, 2015). And, while the job market appears to be healthy with unemployment hovering around 5.1%, 27.7 percent of the unemployed, or 2.2 million, have been jobless for 27 weeks or more (Ferreira, 2015). Those who are employed part time because they aren t able to find full time employment and those who have given up looking for employment, even after their unemployment benefits have expired, aren t counted in the unemployment numbers (Ferreira, 2015). I make my way through the maze of students, and I catch my best friend, Lauren, in the stairwell at the top of A building, both on our way to the history class we have together. We do not say a word, just share a look that says we want to go home and we need more coffee, before we head into class. Our class is always in chaos in the mornings. Her face is red and blotchy and she is staring at her phone. Although universally high toxicity has been attributed to vanadium [Bhatnagar, 2004 and Liu et al., 2005], nickel is generally not far behind [Salnikow et al., 2004 and Kurowska Bal, 2010]. Nickel is a primary contributor to the inhalation cancer risk because of its relative high concentration in fly ash and the known carcinogenic potency of its sub sulfide forms (Ni3S2) [Dreher et al., 1997]. Huang et al. (2015) suggest, that oil fly ash surface metals (like vanadium) may be the key determinants in the induction and/or amplification of allergic responses. The metal fraction of oil ashes has been shown, in both in vivo and in vitro studies, to increase lung injury and cytotoxicity (Dreher et al., 1997; Dye et al., 1999; Gavett et al., 1997; Kodavanti et al., 1998; 2001), increase lung inflammation (Kodavanti et al., 1998; 2001), increase airway reactivity (Gavett et al., 1997; Lambert et al., 2000), alter cytokine production (Dye et al., 1999; Carter et al., 1997), and increase oxidative stress (Ghio et al., 2002b; Kim et al., 2003; Lewis et al., 2003) Kadiiska et al. In our contemporary American culture, you may not see very much of this, but believe it or not, it was a vital part of some cultures in ancient societies. Throughout history, animals have appeared to be a significant component of culture, either economically, religiously, spiritually, mythically, and other ways. Animals are of high significance and importance to culture, and without their rich symbolic essence, perhaps various cultures would have died out. In this essay, I will explore the tightly bonded relationship between animals and human cultures through multiple perspectives and practices around the world: in the Native American culture, Hindu religion, ancient Egyptian society, and the worship of animals through sacrifice in ancient Greece. Native Americans are notoriously known for obtaining a culture that is widely sustained off of both revering and resourcefully using animals. Indigenous American tribes heavily relied upon animals for survival, and without that ingenuity, their culture would have likely failed to survive. Animals had to be treated properly because they could represent spirits, as well as plants which could give evidence of the supernatural and the land which could reveal God. Tim Murphy, Ph.D., wrote in his essay, Probing the Relationship between Native Americans and Ecology. Therefore, this closely bound relationship ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Madison is one of the most influential and groundbreaking legal proceeding in the history of the United States. The Marbury v. Madison case was the first of its kind. Prior to Marbury vs. Madison, it was unclear whether the U.S. Supreme Court had the power to determine the constitutionality of laws or what should happen when the Constitution and a law were in conflict. Consequently the theory of every such government must be that an act of the Legislature repugnant to the Constitution is void. With these words written by Chief Justice Marshall, this case is significant because for the first time, the Supreme Court declared an act of Congress unconstitutional because it was contrary to the Constitution. This decision was the foundation for the Supreme Court s power of judicial review, the power by which the Court could determine the constitutionality of laws passed by Congress. Marshall stated in the majority opinion Court must either decide that case conformably to the law, disregarding the Constitution, or conformably to the Constitution, disregarding the law, the Court must determine which of these conflicting rules governs the case. This is of the very essence of judicial duty. Marshall is saying that the Judicial has the decision on the two opposing laws and thus creating Judicial Review. Nothing in the Constitution gave the Court this specific power. Marshall, however, believed that the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 40. Cod Chapter Summary I chose the book Cod: A Biography of the Fish That Changed the World. As the title suggests, and the author, Mark Kurlansky, explores, a simple fish, more specifically, cod, has an importance that has been proven throughout history. The prologue is set in Petty Harbour, a town in Newfoundland and tells a story of three experienced fishermen, Sam, Leonard, and Bernard. They are participating in the Sentinel Fishery which was an attempt to help scientists and fishermen work together to measure the supply of cod. Their boat was to catch as many cod as they could and measure and tag them. A second boat was to catch exactly 100 cod and open them to identify their age and sex. For three men who fishingwas their life hobby, you would think this would... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As outlined in this assignment, a hazard is defined as an object, condition, or process that threatens individuals and society in terms of production or reproduction. I would like to suggest that the process of overfishing is a hazard that this book unfolds throughout history. Overfishing is simply when cod are caught at a faster rate than they can naturally reproduce. The author suggests that man is part of the natural world and the two can t separate themselves, and in this case the activity of overfishing is driven by man. Cod provided a source of protein and a financial stability to many nations. As populations increased, the demand for cod increased, and consequently the industry became competitive in nature. Because of this, fishing for the Atlantic cod became commercialized, and although nations modernized at different speeds, the goal for all was to catch more. As early as 1815, the French used the technique of longlining. Although it was expensive because of the amount of bait that was used, it was the first advancement from handlining and allowed for numerous fish to be caught at once. From there, bottom dragging became popular and although it was an effective method of catching a lot of cod at once, it was also damaging to other fish that got caught in the net. In addition to improved techniques, curing methods advanced and freezing methods were developed. Technology advancements included the chronometer and telegraph which both improved navigation, and sonors and spotter aircraft aided in spotting cod schools. Fishing boats advanced from oars and sails to steam powered to motorships. All of these advancements aided in the overfishing, and consequently became a hazard. Scientists argue that you can t predict nature and there is no way to tell if and when, as well as, how long it will take to replenish the codstock. For this reason, I suggest overfishing to be a hazard. The depletion of cod has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. A Midsummer Night s Dream Essay A Midsummer NIght s Dream A Midsummer Night s Dream is a classical play written by William Shakespeare. It is one of his more eccentric piece of work. The play is about the struggle of love between four essential characters: Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius , and Helena. However, it is not quite that simple. The play is quite confusing. In Midsummer Night s dream the play take place in two realms fairy realm and human realm, two of the three main settings. Another one of the settings take place inside the cottage of a carpenter Peter Quince. At one point during the play the realms converge Making it difficult for the audience to distinguish the difference between reality and illusion within the play. This is one of the many reasons the play is interesting or appealing. Also to add on, the symbolism of the tile and moon, and comedic elements within the play serves engage and intrigue. The beginning of the play begins in Athen during the light of day, reality. It is here we are introduced to the first six of essential characters: Theseus, Hippolyta, Egeus, Hermia, Lysander, Demetrius, and Helena. Here we learn that Theseus and Hippolyta are getting, however, they are not happy as one might think. Now, Egeus, the father of Hermia insists she marries Demetrius, one of her two suitors. • 43. The Nature Of The Mountain Men The mountain men were known for their explorations and fur trapping in the Rocky Mountains and the great plains from about 1810 to 1880. Outside of their explorations and trapping, the Mountain Men also created Emigrant Trails which allowed Americans of the East to settle in the West. To some they [mountain men] symbolized the rugged freedom of the frontier, to others, anarchy and degradation. The debate surrounding mountain men was, at its core, really a debate about the nature of the West: was the frontier the site of healthy independence or dangerous dissolution? Through the rising and crashing of the trappers rendezvous in the 1840 s and the scarce enemies that the mountain men had, Christopher Kit Carson, Jim Bridger, and James Jim Beckwourth continued to lead the explorations and trappings in the Rocky Mountains making clear that those men were there promoting healthy independence across the frontier during the 1840 s. For starters, the Mountain Men sold their fur and created the Rocky Mountain Rendezvous in order to make profit. Essentially, the rendezvous was a gathering that happened each year in various locations where trappers were able to sell their fur and hides as well as replenish their supplies(Sage). These events were known to be lively places that welcomed all (Barkin). The ones that typically showed were free trappers, Indians, native trappers wives, children, and even travelers that had been passing through(Barkin). James Jim Beckwourth, a ... • 44. Hofstede s Cultural Traits And Its Impacts On Leadership Another study from Oke (2013) revealed some similar verdicts on the Nigerian managers. This study was for the construction professionals, and it indicated that most of the Nigerian managers use the autocratic leadership style. At the same time, there is a strong sense of result oriented approach among these managers as they concern primarily with the task at hand; and do not tend to cater for the long term development of those under their command (Oke, 2013). The author further commented that democratic and participative leaderships had not been observed amongst the Nigerian managers. Regarding Chinese managers also tend to be autocratic when they fulfill their leadership responsibilities (Sharkey and Murray, 2015). Chinese people are known for their respect for the authority, and it is often in the Chinese culture that a follower should not directly express their thoughts but to follow instructions (Ma and Tsui, 2015). Another trait of the Chinese leaders is the tendency to think carefully before making a decision as they would like to make sure such would lead to long term benefits whilst the decision is to be deemed appropriate by others (Ma and Tsui, 2015). In order to better understand the underlying factors contributing to cultural specific leadership styles and to therefore discuss the cross cultural management/leadership issues this essay will now refer to Hofstede s cultural dimension model. The process requires tremendous amount of energy to heat up the mixture of ethene and steam up to the reaction temperatures. Ethene is obtained by a cracked fraction obtained from oil. Over the years there have been many environmental disasters from drilling and transporting oil. On the 20th of April 2010, the Deepwater Horizon drilling platform exploded in the Gulf of Mexico. This lead to 4.9 million barrels of oil being spilled into the Gulf of Mexico which resulted in the worst environmental disaster in recent times with millions of aquatic animals being affected (Kinver, 2011). Fermentation has little to no environmental impacts. It is carbon neutral process and new emerging technologies will completely remove the carbon dioxide by product, therefore reducing its very minimal environmental impact even further. Hydration on the other hand, has a minor direct affect on the environment and a major indirect affect on the environment. Another questionable problem with the evidence was that the child was pinned into his crib so that he wouldn t move at night and somehow, when the child was abducted, whomever took him, didn t move the pins or even touch the pins to get him out of the bed. There were no fingerprints on the ladder, not even where the person that made the ladder would have left fingerprints, showing that everything had been wiped clean. Then there was the ransom note that was written with grave misspellings and horrible Germanic construction. The next question involved is with the courts, the adjudication, arraignment and the preliminary hearing. Throughout all of the investigations, they came down with one principle suspect. A Bronx carpenter by the name of Bruno Richard Hauptmann. He passed a $10 gold certificate at a gas station from the ransom money and this led to his subsequent arrest, trial and finally the death penalty. Ultimately, the police found about $14,000 or more of the ransom money at the suspect s home. In newspapers, the case appeared open and shut. Hauptmann had entered the United States as a stowaway, with a prison record in Germany for robberies.
