Evaluation
Term Work
The term work will constitute 75% of the final grade. A minimum of 50% of graded term work
must be completed in class. Students will read 8 10 selections and write a minimum of 2500
words during the term, including at least two 500 word analytical essays written in class; a 1000
word analytical essay; and a research assignment. Students will develop arguments based upon a
critical appreciation of the themes and literary techniques presented in the readings. They will also
support their views with textual references. No more than 10% of the final grade will be allotted to
quizzes and/or group work.
Final Examination
The final exam will constitute 25% of the course grade. It will be a common exam in the form of a
textual analysis. Students must pass the term work and the final exam to pass the course.
Grading System
In addition to the usual passing grades of A+ to D, there are two grades that denote unsuccessful
attempts at EAC150:
F (0 to 49%)Failure (term work has not been completed)
ATT The student has satisfactory attendance and has completed the term work, but has not met the
learning outcomes. Any students receiving ATT in EAC 150 will continue their studies in EAC
150 in subsequent semesters until they have met the learning outcomes. In the meantime, the ATT

Ester Synthesis Lab Report
The synthesis of an ester using Fisher esterification by reacting acetic acid with an unknown
alcohol was performed. Fisher esterification is a reaction that produces ester by refluxing a
carboxylic acid and an alcohol in presence of an acid catalyst. In this experiment, the carboxylic
acid is acetic acid, and the alcoholis unknown. The product has a banana like smell, which was
most likely to be pentyl acetate, 2 pentyl acetate, or isopentyl acetate. The IR spectroscopy was
performed on the alcohol and the product in order to confirm the synthesis of ester. Three distinct
signals were observed on alcohol IR spectrum. A broad signal was observed between 3500 3200cm
1 indicates O H functional group. Various small sharp sp3 C H signals between... Show more

labeled F was seen at 0.90ppm, which is the most shielded since it locates the furthest from the
electronegative ester group. These signals confirm that ester product is indeed 2 pentyl acetate.

A threshold of life and death, the swamp holds a length of trees in its standing waters up to its
multi layered canopy. Amid low lying shrubs, pools coalesce atop seasoned earth. The saturated
land keeps an enraptured meadow. I admire the wildness of its primordial nature, I can easily
appreciate the outgrowth of its networks and wonder how far they stretch.
I remember years ago, while I was volunteering in New Orleans, I was with a crew of kids
cleaning up one of the bayous in the area shortly after Hurricane Katrina hit. Between alligators, we
pulled out debris from the water with thirty something foot long rakes.
Walking down a green thoroughfare I noticed a heron in the water. I froze. Instantly we made eyes.
The shape of the bird caught me. It was long, slender and rigid standing utterly still in the bayou. Its
birdness kept me in a trance. There it stood atop the low water, in blue and gray.
I was shocked. The sense of it standing there amid alligators in a freshly weather torn world gave
me an immense feeling. It was as if this bird reminded me of shame, shame for being separate,
for being human. Together we came face to face, and each sort of gave the other access. Shook, I
tried to continue my walk, but I felt like I shouldn t. The bird and the rest of the swamp, the rest of

Arrivals (DACA) passed by President Obama. Those persons known as Dreamers were brought
illegally to the United States at a young age by their parents. Now they have pursued careers, started

Tuesday, September 5th, 2017, the former president Donald Trump ended this program, leaving

The Mexican Mother, known as Malinche was a creator. Through her words, she created a new
land free from the Aztecs and human sacrifice. Malinche s ability to translate the native
languages of Mexico to the Spanish invaders gave Malinche the power to stop the much
unnecessary bloodshed. Malinche was a slave, she had no power other than her ability to translate
for the Spaniards.Yet, her name still holds controversy in the Mexican community. La Malinche is
acclaimed to be the harlot of Conquistador Hernan Cortez, her name is a curse among her people.
Malinche is blamed for the suffering of the natives and is believed to be a complacent whore.
The history of Malinche was obscured by fiction and then sold to the Native population of Mexico.
The Spanish wanted the natives to believe that Malinche was the antagonist so they could deflect
the blame from themselves. This increased tensions in the native communities and helped the
Spanish achieve greater success during the colonization of Mexico. It is Ironic that the Mexican
people curse Malinche because they are feeding into the very propaganda that belittles their original
native ancestry. The Spanish believed that the natives were stupid, their traditions were savage and
held no place in their new world. The Spanish planted these seeds of guilt in regards to Malinche,

The carnage of world war one was the result of the clash between new technologies, but old
strategies. Blitzkrieg warfare would be the first form of modern military tactics for it fully utilizes
the technological advancements of that time. The term Blitzkrieg was not invented by the
Germans, but by an English magazine that described the invasion of Poland (Showalter). While
many accredit the invention of Blitzkriegwarfare to Heinz Guderian, Germany s Chief of Mobile
Troops during WWII, it was actually invented far before that. In fact, it was developed right after
WWI after seeing the devastating effects of trench warfare(Showalter). Ironically, the basis of
Blitzkrieg warfare was also laid by German Field Marshall Alfred von Schlieffenof the famous
Schlieffen plan of WWI(Showalter). The basic essence of Blitzkrieg warfare was built upon the
belief that Germany was always going to be out resourced and out numbered in every war and
thus in order to win it, the Germans must strike hard and fast and penetrate deep behind enemy
lines(Showalter). Thus, Blitzkrieg warfare was the most effective military tactic of its time
because it utilized all of the technology of its time, it not only utilized physical warfare, but also
psychological warfare, and because Germany s opponents were not prepared for this kind of
warfare.

INTRODUCTION
I continued my study in pursuit of the doctoral degree in Biblical Studies by reading the text,
Encountering the Old Testament. Little did I know when I began reading this text that it would so
completely satisfy two of my greatest pleasures; studying the Word of God and studying people s
history.

Scribes who copied the biblical text believed they were copying the very words of God. One group
of scribes committed to preserving God s word was the Masoretes. They did three things to
preserve the text they received: (1) they developed a system for writing vowels; (2) they
developed a system of accents for the Hebrew text; and (3) they developed a system of detailed
notes from the text.
The majority of the text was written in Hebrew, the remainder in Aramaic. The most important
Hebrew copies of the Old Testament are the Masoretic text (the most reliable), the Samaritan
Pentateuch and the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Samaritan Pentateuch contains only Genesis through
Deuteronomy and originated with the Samaritans. The Dead Sea Scrolls contains part of every Old
Testament book except Ester. The Old Testament was also translated into other languages. The
Septuagint, a translation in Greek, has been helpful in resolving some portions of the Pentateuch
and the Targums helps us understand early Jewish interpretations.
How Do We Interpret the Bible?
Use the Grammatical Historical Method
Following the rules of hermeneutics helps us interpret the Bible. The grammatical historical method
seeks to determine what the text says grammatically and what it means historically. In order to

arrive at this understanding we must first consider the context in which the text was written.

stumbled upon a documentary titled, Iris. Iris initially intrigued me when I caught sight of the

philosophy is to be as bold as possible. She also advises to accept everyone, especially yourself.
