3. Two weeks ago, I had watched two war movies which are shot based on true story which are
Saving Private Ryan and Pearl Harbor. These two movies were superb and attractive. These
two movies, produced by Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay respectively, are sharing the
same genre of war and action films. However, there were quite a numbers of differences
that I spotted between these two movies.
First of all, let’s focus on the other genre which can be found in the movie Pearl harbor but
not in the movie Saving Private Ryan. The genre I am talking about is genre of romance. In
the movie Pearl Harbor, Rafe McCawley, played by Ben Affleck, builds a romantic
relationship with a nurse, Evelyn Johnson, role played by Kate Beckinsale. However, during a
battle, Rafe is shot down over the English Channel and presumed to be killed in action. His
death put Kate is depression. Danny Walker, played by Josh Harnett, who is the best friend
of Rafe, starts to build a romantic relationship with Evelyn 6 months later after the death of
Rafe. Surprisingly, one night, Evelyn is relieved to discover Rafe, alive and well, standing
outside her door. He explains that he survived his plane crash and was rescued by a French
fishing boat, and was stuck in occupied France ever since. This scene can be recognized as
the most crucial scene in that movie and it has twisted and turned the story line and a love
triangle has started to develop in them. Conversely, I failed to discover any romantic genre
in the movie Saving Private Ryan as there are no love element between the characters in
that movie. This movie is about a troop of 7 soldiers, leads by Captain Miller, played by Tom
Hanks, have been given an order to save a paratrooper named James Francis Ryan who has
participated in the war called Normandy Invasion. However, his survival and whereabouts in
the war remain unknown. Throughout their search of this man, they have braced through
the battlefield, while 7 of them have sacrificed their life, they have learned to value
friendship.
Next, I would like to emphasis on the settings of these two movies. The time setting for the
movie Pearl Harbor is on 1941 which is the beginning of the World War 2. The Empire of
Japan has launched a surprise attack on the headquarters of the United States Pacific Fleet,
Pearl Harbor, causing massive destruction, death and casualties. This attack has brought
America into World War 2. In the other hand, the time setting for the movie Saving Private
Ryan has been set on year 1944, during the World War 2 and after the war at the Ohama
Beach, France where American troops fighting against Germany troops in a military
operation called Normandy Invasion. For the place setting, Pearl Harbor takes place in Pearl
Harbor, America. The other significant place that involves the death of the main character
Danny is at a paddy field in China where he is shot to death by Japanese army after the crash
of his plane. For the movie Saving Private Ryan, in the starting of the movie, the war begins
at the Ohama Beach, after the landing of American troops from the ships and it is the place
where private Ryan is reported missing while his other 3 siblings are reported dead. The
movie ends at the town at Ramelle, where they have successfully found Private Ryan after a
battle with Germany troops. Private Ryan, Richard Reiben, and Technician Fifth Grade
Timothy Upham are the only characters survive until the end. The rest of the troops,
including Captain Miller, are dead in that battle.
Now I would like to focus on the director of these two movies. Pearl Harbor is directed by
Michael Bay, who is well known for his directing in high budget action movies, characterized
4. by its wonderful special effects and stylistic visual. His blockbuster movies like The
Transformer trilogy, Pearl Harbor and Armageddon have successfully grossed around 3
billion dollars around the globe. Saving Private Ryan is directed by Steven Spielberg, who is
considered as one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. Steven
Spielberg has directed many blockbuster movies such as E.T, Jaws, and of course, Saving
Private Ryan, each of them have successfully become the highest-grossing film made at the
time. Saving Private Ryan has been rated as the must-watch war movie in history. Due to
two different directors, I can sense the differences in these two movies. Pearl Harbor is a
fast pace movie, with entertaining visual and sound effects while Saving Private Ryan is a
slow pace movie but in personal, I found that it has a better story line than Pearl Harbor.
Finally, I would like to focus on the award received by these movies. Pearl Harbor had been
nominated for the 4 categories in Academy Award and it had won the best sound editing,
beating the animation Monster Inc. Besides, this movie had also nominated in Golden Globe
Award, MTV Movie Award, Golden Raspberry Award. However, Pearl Harbor had only
managed to win the Best Action Sequence in MTV Movie Award. Conversely, Saving Private
Ryan had won a lot of awards compare to Pearl Harbor. It had won 5 categories which are
Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Sound, Best Film Editing and finally, Best Effect
and Sound Effect Editing in Oscar Award and astonishingly being nominated for 11
categories. It had also won several awards in few occasions that are BAFTA Award, MTV
Award, BMI Films and so on.
In conclusion, the differences can be clearly seen through the genre, settings, director and
number of award won by each movie. Both movies are war movies, but there are love
elements in the movie Pearl Harbor, while there are obviously none in the movie Saving
Private Ryan. Saving Private Ryan is definitely a better movie than Pearl Harbor, based on
the number of awards they had won.
