Phar Data Platform: From the Lakehouse Paradigm to the Reality

Despite the increased availability of ready-to-use generic tools, more and more enterprises are deciding to build in-house data platforms. This practice, common for some time in research labs and digital native companies, is now making its waves across large enterprises that traditionally used proprietary solutions and outsourced most of their IT. The availability of large volumes of data, coupled with more and more complex analytical use cases driven by innovations in data science have yielded these traditional and on premise architectures to become obsolete in favor of cloud architectures powered by open source technologies. The idea of building an in-house platform at a larger enterprise comes with many challenges of its own: Build an Architecture that combines the best elements of data lakes and data warehouses to accommodate all kinds from BI to ML use cases. The need to interoperate with all the company’s data and technology, including legacy systems. Cultural transformation, including a commitment to adopt agile processes and data driven approaches. This presentation describes a success story on building a Lakehouse in an enterprise such as LIDL, a successful chain of grocery stores operating in 32 countries worldwide. We will dive into the cloud-based architecture for batch and streaming workloads based on many different source systems of the enterprise and how we applied security on architecture and data. We will detail the creation of a curated Data Lake comprising several layers from a raw ingesting layer up to a layer that presents cleansed and enriched data to the business units as a kind of Data Marketplace. A lot of focus and effort went into building a semantic Data Lake as a sustainable and easy to use basis for the Lakehouse as opposed to just dumping source data into it. The first use case being applied to the Lakehouse is the Lidl Plus Loyalty Program. It is already deployed to production in 26 countries with more than 30 millions of customers’ data being analyzed on a daily basis. In parallel to productionizing the Lakehouse, a cultural and organizational change process was undertaken to get all involved units to buy into the new data driven approach.

In the last few years, deep learning has achieved significant success in a wide range of domains, including computer vision, artificial intelligence, speech, NLP, and reinforcement learning. However, deep learning in recommender systems has, until recently, received relatively little attention. This talks explores recent advances in this area in both research and practice. I will explain how deep learning can be applied to recommendation settings, architectures for handling contextual data, side information, and time-based models, and compare deep learning approaches to other cutting-edge contextual recommendation models, and finally explore scalability issues and model serving challenges.

Reckitt is a fast-moving consumer goods company with a portfolio of famous brands and over 30k employees worldwide. With that scale small projects can quickly grow into big datasets, and processing and cleaning all that data can become a challenge. To solve that challenge we have created a metadata driven ETL framework for orchestrating data transformations through parametrised SQL scripts. It allows us to create various paths for our data as well as easily version control them. The approach of standardising incoming datasets and creating reusable SQL processes has proven to be a winning formula. It has helped simplify complicated landing/stage/merge processes and allowed them to be self-documenting. But this is only half the battle, we also want to create data products. Documented, quality assured data sets that are intuitive to use. As we move to a CI/CD approach, increasing the frequency of deployments, the demand of keeping documentation and data quality assessments up to date becomes increasingly challenging. To solve this problem, we have expanded our ETL framework to include SQL processes that automate data quality activities. Using the Hive metastore as a starting point, we have leveraged this framework to automate the maintenance of a data dictionary and reduce documenting, model refinement, testing data quality and filtering out bad data to a box filling exercise. In this talk we discuss our approach to maintaining high quality data products and share examples of how we automate data quality processes.

PubMatic is a leading advertisement technology company that processes 500 billion transactions (50 terabytes of data) per day in real-time and batch processing pipeline on a 900-node cluster to power highly efficient machine learning algorithms, provide real time feedback to ad-server for optimization and provide in depth insights on customer inventory and audience. At PubMatic, scaling with ever growing volume has always been the biggest challenge; we have been optimizing our technology stack for performance and costs. Another challenge is to support the demand for variety reports and analytics by customers and internal stakeholders. Writing custom jobs to provide analytics leads to repetitive efforts and redundancy of business logic in many different jobs. To solve the above problems, we built a platform that allows creating configuration driven data processing pipeline with high re-usability of business functions. It is also extensible to utilize cutting-edge technologies in the ever-changing big data ecosystem. This platform enables our development teams to build a robust batch data processing pipeline to power analytics dashboards. It also empowers novice users to provide a configuration with fact and dimensions to generate ad-hoc reports in a single data processing job. Framework intelligently identifies and re-uses existing business functions based on user inputs. It also provides an abstraction layer that keeps core business logic un-affected by the any technology changes. This framework is currently powered by Spark, but it can be easily configured with other technologies. Framework significantly improved time to develop data processing jobs from weeks to few days, it simplified unit testing and QA automation, as well as provided simpler interfaces to the customers and internal stakeholders to generate custom reports. Building End-to-End Delta Pipelines on GCP

Delta has been powering many production pipelines at scale in the Data and AI space since it has been introduced for the past few years. Built on open standards, Delta provides data reliability, enhances storage and query performance to support big data use cases (both batch and streaming), fast interactive queries for BI and enabling machine learning. Delta has matured over the past couple of years in both AWS and AZURE and has become the de-facto standard for organizations building their Data and AI pipelines. In today’s talk, we will explore building end-to-end pipelines on the Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Through presentation, code examples and notebooks, we will build the Delta Pipeline from ingest to consumption using our Delta Bronze-Silver-Gold architecture pattern and show examples of Consuming the delta files using the Big Query Connector.

Processing Large Datasets for ADAS Applications using Apache Spark

Semantic segmentation is the classification of every pixel in an image/video. The segmentation partitions a digital image into multiple objects to simplify/change the representation of the image into something that is more meaningful and easier to analyze [1][2]. The technique has a wide variety of applications ranging from perception in autonomous driving scenarios to cancer cell segmentation for medical diagnosis. Exponential growth in the datasets that require such segmentation is driven by improvements in the accuracy and quality of the sensors generating the data extending to 3D point cloud data. This growth is further compounded by exponential advances in cloud technologies enabling the storage and compute available for such applications. The need for semantically segmented datasets is a key requirement to improve the accuracy of inference engines that are built upon them. Streamlining the accuracy and efficiency of these systems directly affects the value of the business outcome for organizations that are developing such functionalities as a part of their AI strategy. This presentation details workflows for labeling, preprocessing, modeling, and evaluating performance/accuracy. Scientists and engineers leverage domain-specific features/tools that support the entire workflow from labeling the ground truth, handling data from a wide variety of sources/formats, developing models and finally deploying these models. Users can scale their deployments optimally on GPU-based cloud infrastructure to build accelerated training and inference pipelines while working with big datasets. These environments are optimized for engineers to develop such functionality with ease and then scale against large datasets with Spark-based clusters on the cloud.

The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) has activities relevant to the workshop scope of "the current state-of-the-art in satellite data interoperability”. This presentation will focus on two main topics with the option to discuss other relevant topics that the participants may wish to discuss, e.g., WFS3. The two focus areas of development: 1) Geospatial Datacubes and 2) Earth Observation Exploitation Platforms. 1) A Geospatial Datacube provides access to and analytics on analysis ready data (ARD) organized with coordinate axes of space and time with cells in the cube containing data of geospatial features, e.g., imagery. OGC members implementing geospatial datacubes are documenting common practices to spur development and leading to the possibility to federated geospatial datacubes. 2) OGC is forming a Earth Observation Exploitation Platform Domain Working Group with the goal of defining a standards-based framework for cloud-based access to and analysis of EO data. Thanks to standard built-in Location Services and hybrid positioning hardware, every Windows Phone knows where it is. In this session, ActiveNick shows you how to build a truly “smart” phone application by adding Location Intelligence Services (LIS) to it. Using Microsoft Visual Studio, the Windows Phones SDK and other geospatial APIs from Nokia, Google and Bing Maps, you will learn how to locate the device in the world using the phone GPS and other Location Services, display maps and manipulate them with touch gestures, geocode addresses into lat/long pairs, and display the results on a map using pushpins, UI elements and more. When our company was acquired we needed a way to keep our team and remote teams updated on what we was done. Some members were often travelling or in different time zones. We needed a way to see everything that was done each day all in one place, especially as the teams worked on more complex projects. Everyone was using different methods to do this: standups, written reports, emails and meetings. Nothing stuck. “!done reports” introduce a simple IRC command: !done. Team members say !done and what they just did. These !dones are put into a daily report. !done becomes a part of everyday at work, not a strained task that’s easily forgotten. Many development teams already use IRC, Skype and other systems to communicate. !done is an addition to existing systems, is open source and easily modified. It is built off of ZenIRC bot and bundled into Loqi, the friendly IRC bot lurking in the #pdxtech channel on freenode. This presentation will show you how a simple bot solved a lot of problems for a lot of distributed people.

The Current State of OAuth 2

If you've ever written any code to authenticate wtih Twitter, you may have been confused by all the signature methods and base strings. You'll be happy to know that OAuth 2 has vastly simplified the process, but at what cost? This talk will give an overview of the OAuth 2 spec, starting with the various options the standard gives to developers for building web apps and native apps. We'll look at what the end user sees, work our way to what developers using an OAuth 2 API deal with, and we’ll end up at what developers of OAuth-2-compliant APIs will need to know to successfully implement the standard. Many large providers have recently deployed APIs using OAuth 2, including Facebook, Foursquare, Google, and more. But since OAuth 2 is technically still a "draft," many aspects of the spec change from month to month and it's sometimes hard to keep up. We'll cover the commonalities and differences between some of the major providers and draft versions. The security implications of some of the changes between versions 1 and 2 will be covered, along with recommendations for best practices. You'll also get a glimpse of the debates currently raging on the internal OAuth 2 mailing list. While location-based mobile apps are becoming increasingly popular, they are still relatively new. Special considerations need to be made for battery life and handling large data sets of geolocated data. The good news is there are many services and technologies you can use to assist you in building mobile location-based apps. In this session, Aaron Parecki, co-founder of Geoloqi.com, shows you services you can leverage to do things like nearby business lookups, location-based triggers, nearest intersection queries, and more. Aaron also covers the location services available on the various mobile platforms as well as in HTML 5, and shares some insights on how to deal with battery life. The session concludes with some real-world use cases for real-time location such as turning on and off your lights in your house or sending an SMS when you leave work.

There’s great tech out there for dedicated GPS devices and real-time tech for devices running intensive GPS for short periods, In the ordinary world – everyone wants to be location-aware, but battery drain has been an issue. Consumer devices – the devices in your pockets vs. a dedicated GPS device. I thinkeveryone in this room has troublewith GPS being a totalbatteryhog. For on the go situations, we need a solution that prevents battery-drain while still providing location-based alerts and tracking. This is consumer-grade, ready for millions of devices. Holding back the market for consumer devices to get on using GPS.
Different from Geoevents team – with Geoevents, all the processing is happening on the server, with Geotriggers, much of it is happening on the phone.
