These neglected diseases affect over a billion people and could be treated cheaply with drugs costing less than 30p per person. This wastes an opportunity to eliminate scourges like sleeping sickness, elephantiasis, and river blindness.
Epidemic Diseases
Epidemic diseases are spread by insects passing on microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, and protozoa when they feed or bite. Mosquitoes in particular spread serious epidemic diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, African sleeping sickness, and West Nile virus. Malaria is one of the deadliest diseases worldwide, spread by the bite of the Anopheles mosquito between dusk and dawn across over 100 countries. Yellow fever is also spread by mosquitoes and causes varied symptoms with most improving after a few days but some experiencing liver and kidney failure. Vaccines exist for these diseases but are not always accessible in developing areas.
Ebola:the possible bioterrorism angle and theory
Ebola virus disease is a potential agent for bioterrorism due to its high mortality rate and ability to cause mass casualties. It has no approved treatments or vaccines, and its emergence in Nigeria has caused fear among the population and utilization of government resources. While Ebola spreads through direct contact with body fluids of infected humans or animals, it has not been shown to infect domestic pets or spread through the air. With proper awareness and control measures, officials hope to contain the outbreak and prevent Ebola from becoming endemic.

This topic interests me to a great extent because Ebola has been a deadly menace, ravaging the African continent and the world in general. According to World Health Organization (2015) the virus has so far claimed the lives of approximately 10,000 people. In addition, there is no single licensed vaccine to protect people against the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) even though there are various vaccines which are currently in development through clinical trials. New Ebola cases are being reported each and every day and unless something is done fast, the disease will continue to pose a threat to human life. It is therefore important to understand the various aspects of this lethal virus in order to continuously take proper precaution against it.
The Audience
The paper will target community members who do not have an in depth understanding of the Ebola Virus. It will help to dispel any existing myths and misconceptions relating to the illness. By doing this, the community members will also be able to understand the steps that are being taken by the government through agencies such as C.D.C to prevent and control against the Ebola virus by training medical responders as well as airport crew and workers. This will calm them down and hence avert the risk of a panic situation in the area; incase an individual from the community is suspected of being infected with the virus. Community engagement is the key to controlling outbreaks by applying a set of interventions such as contact tracing, social mobilization, proper lab practices and surveillance. It is therefore important to educate the community members adequately on all aspects of the virus in order to lessen casualty in case an outbreak occurs in the area.
Learning Objectives
This paper will sensitize individuals on the symptoms associated with Ebola. It will also equip the audience with measures that can be undertaken if they suspect a friend or a family member to be infected by the virus. In addition, the paper will explore various matters relating to the origin of the virus. This will enhance their knowledge of the topic. By doing this, the audience will be enlightened enough to pass the correct information to other people around them. Sensitizing community members about the Ebola virus will also ensure that they understand the severity of this outbreak and come up with ways that can be used to aid the worst hit countries.

- 2. “THE EBOLA OUTBREAK” The video “The Ebola outbreak” made by BBC 6 Minute English, in August 28th, 2014 from “LinkEngPark” states that Ebola virus, discovered in 1976, do not have any cure yet and it is responsible for the high increment of mortality in Africa, mainly on the West side. Thus, WHO (World Health Organisation) and the uses of experimental drugs have introduced a dilemma of big proportions to the humanity: Is it better to apply the medications to the sickest people with death risk or to those who are not so sick to die? When considering this dilemma it is important to have in mind that these drugs have not been approved, and their side effects are unknown. In my opinion, Ebola virus has not been treated with the relevance that it demands by the science. Because even when currently technology allows experts to develop medicine and health by leaps and bounds, scientists are not able to prevent this mortal virus. In fact, Ebola’s origin and causes have not been found yet; although specialists postulate that it is caused by some type of bats from Republic of Congo. But does Ebola virus win the fight against modern science? I really do not think so. Furthermore, I felt intrigued by the event that people are dying in places that are widely known because of their overpopulation and poorness (among others negative factors). This idea made me think about governments, society and racism due to the fact that Ebola virus has killed black people only. Being that, a little quantity of white people has been infected they are always cured, as some popular cases that happened in USA and Spain; while, on West Africa (Guinea, Liberia ad Sierra Leone) a half of the population has been infected with death results. It is important to take in account that the use of non-approved drugs to cure this class of diseases is applied under certain conditions only. On the one hand, it is necessary to sign a waiver which states that governments and doctors are not considered liable for unexpected consequences. Does it mean that responsibility is just charged to sick people? And, what happen if those people are too sick to sign the permission? They are doomed to die sadly abandoned by everyone. On the other hand, it is essential to decide if it is better to
- 3. apply medications to the sickest with death risk or to who are not so sick to die, which affirms an ethic-social trouble difficult to solve.
