“I think of horror films as art, as films of confrontation.
Films that make you confront aspects of your own life
that are difficult to face. Just because you're making a
horror film doesn't mean you can't make an artful film.”
David Cronenberg
✔ Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
✔ Nosferatu (1922)
✔ Dracula (1931)
✔ Dracula Untold (2014)
✔ Gothic Horror Literature paved the way for the
film horror genre.
✔ Lumiere Brothers (Spook Tale) and George
Melies (The Manor of the Devil) were the first to
produce ‘Horror’ on film.
✔ German expressionism was foundered. It looked
at expression over realism.
✔ The first horror film made in this creative and
artistic movement was ‘The Cabinet of Dr
Caligari’.
✔ Within this movement these other horror films
were made: The Golem (1920), Nosferatu
(1922) and Faust (1926)
The
Horror
Genre
Let’s break it down…
The word genre derives from French and means ‘type’ or
‘kind’.
In a study of media texts it is used to divide texts into easily
identifiable categories.
Create a spider diagram in your groups about what you
would expect to see/experience/ hear in a horror film.
Horror
In groups you are going to create a trailer for your own horror film
idea, set in a college.
You will need to:
Tuesday
 Plan and create a narrative
 Write a short treatment
 Create a storyboard following the iMovie template
 Present your idea to the rest of the group.
Wednesday
 Film a trailer using the iPad
 Edit your trailer using the iMovie template.
At the end of the week your trailers will be screened and the best
one will win a prize.
✔ Film trailers come in various lengths and
versions, and are initially designed to
intrigue audiences about the film.
✔ This type of trailer is called a 'teaser' and
they contain 'enigmas' (unsolved clues as
to what might happen.)
✔ Any trailers released thereafter provide
audiences with further information and
clues, in the hope of persuading them to
go and see it.
