The Equivalents Project Josh Jefferson 
This is a photo I took of my relief printing plate, my first print using the 
plate and the drawing I did of my expectations before the print.
Primary and secondary sources 
David Hockney: 
This painting is called winter timber. I did a watercolour study from 
a section of this secondary source. Lots of cold colours are used 
such as purple and blue, this portrays the season the painting was 
and relates directly to the title of the piece. The yellow logs have a 
good contrast with these cooler colours yellow and purple are 
opposite on the colour wheel. It creates a vibrant energetic feel to 
the painting. 
Still life: 
This is a photo and a 
study of one of the 
still lives that I have 
been drawing from. A 
still life is a primary 
source because you 
are drawing from a 
visual observation 
and not an 
interpretation of a 
primary source. For 
this drawing I was 
asked to use the 
formal elements to 
create a study of the 
still life. I work mostly 
using line and tone 
one thing that I learnt 
from this was how to 
proportion objects 
and to think about 
negative space.
Development 
This is a painting I did from one of 
the still lives. Firstly I filled in the 
main blocks of colour to get the 
proportions correct I then started 
to fill in the finer detail as you can 
see on the left. Then to develop 
my painting I used mark making 
to create tone and to portray the 
textures of the different materials 
and objects I was painting. for all 
my paintings I have used only the 
three primary colours which 
when combined give more 
organic colours. 
This is a drawing I did for homework, I chose these 
particular objects because of the contrast and how 
different the textures are. The shiny tin in contrast 
with the organic plant and also the wooden pencils. I 
didn’t use colour in this piece because I wanted to try 
and capture all the main textures just by using line, 
tone and mark making.
Visual language 
Cezanne fruit 
This is a painting I did for the colour study 
homework. I did this painting in the style of 
an artist called Cézanne. I used acrylics to do 
this painting and I only used the primary 
colours and a little bit of white. By doing this 
the colours looked more natural. I used the 
white to get tone In the drawing and to show 
where the lighter and darker areas were. I 
used acrylics to get the right texture for the 
painting. I think that I could have structured 
the painting better because the apples are 
the wrong shape, I also should have used the 
measuring technique that we learnt in class 
to get the proportionality correct.
Techniques 
These photos are of my abstract art piece I created in 
lesson. I used tracing paper to trace interesting shapes 
and forms from my sketchbook and magazines. I then 
thought about the composition and how I could lay out 
the objects making them disguised in the other objects. 
When I had thought of the layout I then traced the 
shapes onto a piece of paper to create the template for 
my composition. I then gathered different techniques of 
making textures using different materials such as prints, 
string, sponges, and bubble wrap, and made splotches 
using these techniques. I also did washes of colour using 
different amounts of water and paint to create different 
affects. From this I then retraced some shapes from my 
first drawing and traced them onto the different colours 
and textures I had made. To prevent lots of white space 
behind the shapes I did a blue wash at the top of my 
paper. There are some things that I would change about 
the methods that I used for example I think I used too 
many vibrant colours with very busy patterns, this 
created a clash that makes my abstract forms less 
recognisable because of the similar techniques used.
Development and safety 
We focused on the relief printing process for a few lessons we were given a demonstration on how to use the 
print press and the health and safety risks included in using the print. 
Health and safety: 
Wear protective clothing to prevent ink 
stains. 
Drain the paper only over the tray to prevent 
people from slipping over. 
Only put the ink on the plastic or glass 
surfaces. 
Use white spirit if the ink gets on skin or 
clothing. 
Be careful not to get fingers or loose objects 
caught in the press. 
Never force the press to prevent it breaking. 
Process: 
Plate must be created with outstanding image to be printed. 
A thin layer of oil based printing ink should be used lifting the 
roller when lightly coating the outstanding areas. 
Then soak a piece of a2 cartridge paper in water and put it in 
between two other pieces of paper to dry it. 
Put a piece of newsprint on the roller press and then put the 
plate face up with another piece of newsprint on top. 
Lay the blanket on top of the plate and roll the press over it. 
This technique and the safety precautions helped me to 
develop my work by using different materials and process to 
portray my drawings of the still life.
Evaluation Summary 
Time management: 
At the start of the project I had to work a lot faster than I had to before which at first was a challenge but I gradually gained my skills and I now feel more organised with time. 
I found the homework's more difficult because I never left myself enough time to do a detailed piece and the research. I now know that the homeworks are important for the 
rest of the project in class. 
Research: 
I researched into different artists and the different techniques they use to portray certain moods and feelings. I also researched into different styles such as cubism. 
I used others work to improve my knowledge of the different techniques and styles or art. I then did my own representation of these things. 
I found the technique aspect most useful because it gave me ideas and inspiration to help develop my work. 
I mostly used the internet to gather research as it’s the most accessible resource for me to use. 
Development: 
I think I developed my ideas okay overall but I think I could have done better by using more of my own ideas with others to move on and develop my ideas rather than just 
others ideas and techniques. 
Drawing was an important aspect of developing my work because I could plan out the composition before adding too much detail which is important so the proportion is 
correct, also to create new ideas and add to old ideas 
For my model I mainly used cardboard and brown tape. This is because cardboard is a sturdy material which can also be bent and shaped very easily. Both materials made it 
possible for me to paint my model. 
I like using the negative space of drawing to develop my work because it shows another side to a composition. 
I have learnt about visual language and how to bring it into my work. I think my skills using visual language have greatly improved and I feel a lot more confident that I did at the 
start. 
Final outcomes: 
My work contains all the formal elements but I think I could improve by incorporating all the elements into on composition instead of using different ones in each piece. 
This related to the brief as I have used a large range of 2D and 3D materials in my work, I have also learnt to analyse develop and communicate my work and the rest of the 
learning bullet points. 
If I was given the chance to redo this project I would organise my time better so I would have enough time to complete my work and I would experiment more and present my 
work in a more visually interesting way. 
Overall I have learnt about lots of different processes and the safety aspects of these. I have also learnt about visual language and how to use this in my work. I think the 
presentation of my work could be a lot better because my sketchbook should be more visually interesting. Also my blog is not up to date which I need to improve. I have learnt 
that I need to record the processes I use by taking pictures and writing notes so that I can look back and explain how i got to my final outcome.

Equivalents project summary template

  • 1. The Equivalents Project Josh Jefferson This is a photo I took of my relief printing plate, my first print using the plate and the drawing I did of my expectations before the print.
  • 2. Primary and secondary sources David Hockney: This painting is called winter timber. I did a watercolour study from a section of this secondary source. Lots of cold colours are used such as purple and blue, this portrays the season the painting was and relates directly to the title of the piece. The yellow logs have a good contrast with these cooler colours yellow and purple are opposite on the colour wheel. It creates a vibrant energetic feel to the painting. Still life: This is a photo and a study of one of the still lives that I have been drawing from. A still life is a primary source because you are drawing from a visual observation and not an interpretation of a primary source. For this drawing I was asked to use the formal elements to create a study of the still life. I work mostly using line and tone one thing that I learnt from this was how to proportion objects and to think about negative space.
  • 3. Development This is a painting I did from one of the still lives. Firstly I filled in the main blocks of colour to get the proportions correct I then started to fill in the finer detail as you can see on the left. Then to develop my painting I used mark making to create tone and to portray the textures of the different materials and objects I was painting. for all my paintings I have used only the three primary colours which when combined give more organic colours. This is a drawing I did for homework, I chose these particular objects because of the contrast and how different the textures are. The shiny tin in contrast with the organic plant and also the wooden pencils. I didn’t use colour in this piece because I wanted to try and capture all the main textures just by using line, tone and mark making.
  • 4. Visual language Cezanne fruit This is a painting I did for the colour study homework. I did this painting in the style of an artist called Cézanne. I used acrylics to do this painting and I only used the primary colours and a little bit of white. By doing this the colours looked more natural. I used the white to get tone In the drawing and to show where the lighter and darker areas were. I used acrylics to get the right texture for the painting. I think that I could have structured the painting better because the apples are the wrong shape, I also should have used the measuring technique that we learnt in class to get the proportionality correct.
  • 5. Techniques These photos are of my abstract art piece I created in lesson. I used tracing paper to trace interesting shapes and forms from my sketchbook and magazines. I then thought about the composition and how I could lay out the objects making them disguised in the other objects. When I had thought of the layout I then traced the shapes onto a piece of paper to create the template for my composition. I then gathered different techniques of making textures using different materials such as prints, string, sponges, and bubble wrap, and made splotches using these techniques. I also did washes of colour using different amounts of water and paint to create different affects. From this I then retraced some shapes from my first drawing and traced them onto the different colours and textures I had made. To prevent lots of white space behind the shapes I did a blue wash at the top of my paper. There are some things that I would change about the methods that I used for example I think I used too many vibrant colours with very busy patterns, this created a clash that makes my abstract forms less recognisable because of the similar techniques used.
  • 6. Development and safety We focused on the relief printing process for a few lessons we were given a demonstration on how to use the print press and the health and safety risks included in using the print. Health and safety: Wear protective clothing to prevent ink stains. Drain the paper only over the tray to prevent people from slipping over. Only put the ink on the plastic or glass surfaces. Use white spirit if the ink gets on skin or clothing. Be careful not to get fingers or loose objects caught in the press. Never force the press to prevent it breaking. Process: Plate must be created with outstanding image to be printed. A thin layer of oil based printing ink should be used lifting the roller when lightly coating the outstanding areas. Then soak a piece of a2 cartridge paper in water and put it in between two other pieces of paper to dry it. Put a piece of newsprint on the roller press and then put the plate face up with another piece of newsprint on top. Lay the blanket on top of the plate and roll the press over it. This technique and the safety precautions helped me to develop my work by using different materials and process to portray my drawings of the still life.
  • 7. Evaluation Summary Time management: At the start of the project I had to work a lot faster than I had to before which at first was a challenge but I gradually gained my skills and I now feel more organised with time. I found the homework's more difficult because I never left myself enough time to do a detailed piece and the research. I now know that the homeworks are important for the rest of the project in class. Research: I researched into different artists and the different techniques they use to portray certain moods and feelings. I also researched into different styles such as cubism. I used others work to improve my knowledge of the different techniques and styles or art. I then did my own representation of these things. I found the technique aspect most useful because it gave me ideas and inspiration to help develop my work. I mostly used the internet to gather research as it’s the most accessible resource for me to use. Development: I think I developed my ideas okay overall but I think I could have done better by using more of my own ideas with others to move on and develop my ideas rather than just others ideas and techniques. Drawing was an important aspect of developing my work because I could plan out the composition before adding too much detail which is important so the proportion is correct, also to create new ideas and add to old ideas For my model I mainly used cardboard and brown tape. This is because cardboard is a sturdy material which can also be bent and shaped very easily. Both materials made it possible for me to paint my model. I like using the negative space of drawing to develop my work because it shows another side to a composition. I have learnt about visual language and how to bring it into my work. I think my skills using visual language have greatly improved and I feel a lot more confident that I did at the start. Final outcomes: My work contains all the formal elements but I think I could improve by incorporating all the elements into on composition instead of using different ones in each piece. This related to the brief as I have used a large range of 2D and 3D materials in my work, I have also learnt to analyse develop and communicate my work and the rest of the learning bullet points. If I was given the chance to redo this project I would organise my time better so I would have enough time to complete my work and I would experiment more and present my work in a more visually interesting way. Overall I have learnt about lots of different processes and the safety aspects of these. I have also learnt about visual language and how to use this in my work. I think the presentation of my work could be a lot better because my sketchbook should be more visually interesting. Also my blog is not up to date which I need to improve. I have learnt that I need to record the processes I use by taking pictures and writing notes so that I can look back and explain how i got to my final outcome.
