This elearning module covers equality and diversity awareness in the workplace as defined by the Equality Act of 2010 in the UK. The Act prohibits discrimination based on nine protected characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage/civil partnership, pregnancy/maternity, race, religion/belief, sex, and sexual orientation. It also bans direct and indirect discrimination, harassment, victimization, and failure to provide reasonable adjustments for disabled people in employment, education, when providing goods/services, and in managing premises. The 90-minute course discusses these topics over five modules and is available online or via tablet. It aims to train staff and ensure compliance with equality legislation.

Ensuring your people treat everyone fairly
This elearning module is designed around the Equality Act 2010, the law which bans unfair treatment and promotes equal
opportunities in the workplace and in wider society. Replacing previous anti-discrimination laws, the Equality Act made it easier
for people to understand and comply with the law by simplifying the legislation and removing inconsistencies. The act also
strengthened protection in some situations.
The act defines nine protected characteristics which cannot be used as a reason to treat people unfairly. More than one of
the characteristics applies to all of us, so the act protects everyone against unfair treatment. The following characteristics are
protected:
• Age
• Disability
• Gender reassignment
• Marriage and civil partnership
• Pregnancy and maternity
• Race
• Religion or belief
• Sex
• Sexual orientation.
The Equality Act sets out unlawful treatment including direct and indirect discrimination, harassment, victimisation and failing
to make a reasonable adjustment for a disabled person. The act prohibits unfair treatment in the workplace and in education;
whilst providing goods, facilities and services; when exercising public functions and in the disposal and management of
premises. Discrimination based on association is also prohibited.
