EPOGEN
EPOETIN ALFA
BY:-ZOHRA AKHTAR
BSC BT II YEAR
DRUG PROFILE
DESCRIPTION
 Epoetin Alfa is a human erythropoietin produ
ced in cell culture using recombinant DNA t
echnology.
 Erythropoietin (EPO) is a growth factor prod
uced in the kidneys that stimulates the prod
uction of red blood cells.
 Epoetin Alfa is a 165-amino acid erythropoie
sis-stimulating glycoprotein produced in cell
culture using recombinant DNA technology.
 Used for the treatment of patients with ane
mia.
MECHANISM OF ACTION
 Erythropoietin and epoetin alfa are involved in
the regulation of erythrocyte differentiation a
nd the maintenance of a physiological level of
circulating erythrocyte mass.
 Erythropoietin or exogenous epoetin alfa bind
s to the erythropoietin receptor (EPO-R) and a
ctivates intracellular signal transduction path
ways.
 It is reported to increase the reticulocyte cou
nt within 10 days of initiation, followed by inc
reases in the RBC count, hemoglobin, usually
within 2 to 6 weeks.
Common side effects of Epogen includ
e:
 headache
 body aches
 diarrhea
 cold symptoms (stuffy nose, sneezing, sore
throat, cough)
 joint pain
 bone pain
 muscle pain or spasms
 dizziness
