Most foundations use grants alone to achieve their missions -- but increasingly many are looking to their endowments as another tool for impact. The fields of impact investing and responsible investing have grown dramatically in the past decade. As opportunities increase, foundations are becoming more involved -- through mission-related investing (MRI), program-related investing (PRI), and other approaches. For this webinar, our invited speakers, a program officer and an impact investing expert, explored the ways that foundations are aligning their investments with their missions and values. They discussed two specific examples: a national foundation's program-related investing fund and Impact America, a newly launched equity firm creating both financial and social returns. The Northwest Social Venture Fund is a Series A venture capital fund that aims to alleviate global problems through social entrepreneurship and impact investing. It grew out of the Social Venture Society think tank. The fund evaluates 40-80 companies per month and sees trends of nonprofits converting to for-profit models to raise capital, and for-profits rebranding as impact companies. Impact investing is growing, but some potential investors remain hesitant. The fund highlights the eNABLE nonprofit that provides 3D printed prosthetics at low cost, and InStove, a nonprofit converting to for-profit status to better scale its improved cookstove technology. There remain gaps in the impact investing landscape that the fund hopes to addressImpact Investing

Who Invests in Hedge Funds in My State?
The Hedge Fund Investor Map takes publicly available data from both public and private pension plans, university endowments, and foundations in all 50 states to show what groups are investing in hedge funds. Public pensions such as the AFL-CIO, AFSCME, or Florida Retirement System, and corporate pensions like UPS, 3M, or John Deere all invest in hedge funds. In fact, public pension funds represent the largest portion of capital invested in hedge funds by institutional investors at over 22%.

Sparking transformation in HBCU Communities; Opportunity Zone and data analysis
Opportunity Zones will soon help spark the transformation of HBCU neighborhoods around the country. The Renaissance HBCU Opportunity Fund is a partnership between the HBCU Community Development Action Coalition and community economic development advisory firm Renaissance Equity Partners, with Calvert Impact Capital providing professional advice. The fund is raising $50 million fund to support mixed-use developments around HBCU campuses in Opportunity Zones. The Kresge and Rockefeller Foundations will be providing additional support.

Foundations are uniquely positioned to play a catalytic role in expanding access to finance for organizations that further their missions. They can do this by investing directly in projects and organizations, or by providing financial guarantees that help those organizations gain access to financial from other investors or lenders. CHANGE Philanthropy (formerly known as Joint Affinity Groups) was founded in 1993 to unify identity-focused philanthropic affinity groups into an empowered coalition between our seven core partners. Collectively, we are working to integrate diversity, inclusion, and social justice into philanthropic practice. As the work of our individual partners organizations developed and deepened, so did our need to strategically address equity. Carly Hare (Pawnee/Yankton) strives to live a commitment to advancing equity and community engagement through her professional and personal life. Carly recently stepped into the role of the Coalition Catalyst/National Director for CHANGE Philanthropy in 2015. Carly most recently served as Native Americans in Philanthropy’s Executive Director from 2010-2015 after five years of membership, and serving on the NAP Board of Directors. Carly has served on planning committees and presented at over 30 conferences at the intersection of equity and philanthropy. Carly held the position of the Director of Development for the Native American Rights Fund from 2009-2010. She served as Director of Programs for The Community Foundation Serving Boulder County for five years. She is a proud daughter, sister, auntie, ally, friend, advocate. Racial justice and the climate movement
A challenge as complex as climate change demands approaches that link its social and ecological dimensions. Importantly, the destructive effects of our fossilfuelbased way of life are uneven, harming some people more than others. The impacts of climate change are also uneven. For example, coastal storms, sea level rise, and drought disproportionately affect certain populations. Real solutions to the climate crisis will require a significant level of socioeconomic change, as we decarbonize many sectors of society including energy, agriculture, and transportation, to name a few. Socioeconomic restructuring on this scale raises the critical issue of equity: solutions must work for everyone.
To best create climate solutions that meet the needs of everyone, we must create space for historically less privileged populations to lead. A more inclusive and intersectional movement will allow all groups to learn how patterns of oppression and privilege operate in our society, as well as, understand how they intersect with environmental justice and the ability to influence public policy. It will also build trusting relationships that leverage the power of diverse alliances and intersections, broadening our work beyond the confines of singleissue environmental organizing.
To that end, this webinar will answer the following: “How can we honor the intersectionality of climate change in a way that invites historically excluded populations to lead us toward an unstoppable climate movement?” Participants will walk away with guidance and lessons learned from philanthropists and practitioners who are applying an inclusive and intersectional approach to strengthen their work.

As philanthropists we hope to change the world, but how we do that is often less clear. One option for building a better world is harnessing the power of marketing for social good. Many believe traditional marketing intrinsically corrupts or undermines social philosophy, however the field of social marketing proves that belief false. Social marketing is a social science framework geared towards changing people's behaviors for the betterment of individuals or society.
This webinar focuses on the philanthropic application of social marketing and how the Chesapeake Bay Trust, a non-profit grant-making organization, advances the adoption of social marketing principles in the Chesapeake Bay Region.

Border towns and spaces of (in)visibility.pdf
This report explores the significance of border towns and spaces for strengthening responses to young people on the move. In particular it explores the linkages of young people to local service centres with the aim of further developing service, protection, and support strategies for migrant children in border areas across the region. The report is based on a small-scale fieldwork study in the border towns of Chipata and Katete in Zambia conducted in July 2023. Border towns and spaces provide a rich source of information about issues related to the informal or irregular movement of young people across borders, including smuggling and trafficking. They can help build a picture of the nature and scope of the type of movement young migrants undertake and also the forms of protection available to them. Border towns and spaces also provide a lens through which we can better understand the vulnerabilities of young people on the move and, critically, the strategies they use to navigate challenges and access support.
The findings in this report highlight some of the key factors shaping the experiences and vulnerabilities of young people on the move – particularly their proximity to border spaces and how this affects the risks that they face. The report describes strategies that young people on the move employ to remain below the radar of visibility to state and non-state actors due to fear of arrest, detention, and deportation while also trying to keep themselves safe and access support in border towns. These strategies of (in)visibility provide a way to protect themselves yet at the same time also heighten some of the risks young people face as their vulnerabilities are not always recognised by those who could offer support.
In this report we show that the realities and challenges of life and migration in this region and in Zambia need to be better understood for support to be strengthened and tuned to meet the specific needs of young people on the move. This includes understanding the role of state and non-state stakeholders, the impact of laws and policies and, critically, the experiences of the young people themselves. We provide recommendations for immediate action, recommendations for programming to support young people on the move in the two towns that would reduce risk for young people in this area, and recommendations for longer term policy advocacy.

A Guide to AI for Smarter Nonprofits - Dr. Cori Faklaris, UNC Charlotte
Working with data is a challenge for many organizations. Nonprofits in particular may need to collect and analyze sensitive, incomplete, and/or biased historical data about people. In this talk, Dr. Cori Faklaris of UNC Charlotte provides an overview of current AI capabilities and weaknesses to consider when integrating current AI technologies into the data workflow. The talk is organized around three takeaways: (1) For better or sometimes worse, AI provides you with “infinite interns.” (2) Give people permission & guardrails to learn what works with these “interns” and what doesn’t. (3) Create a roadmap for adding in more AI to assist nonprofit work, along with strategies for bias mitigation.
