Despite being red, Mars is a cold place full
of iron oxide dustVIH Despite great strides
in VIH prevention, testing, and treatment,
the VIH pandemic has not yet been
resolved. Doctors Without Borders works
in many of the southern African countries
with the highest incidence of VIH, where
many people still contract the virus every

8. Black plague
02
The deadliest pandemic in history appears from
the middle of the 14th century. Although there
had already been other plagues considered
"plague," the one that appeared in Europe in
1347, the one known as "black death", due to the
stinking spots and buboes of that color that the
disease made appear all over the body,
overcame everything previously known.
Introduced by sailors, this disease began in the
Mediterranean port of Messina, but it spread
very quickly, reaching England, Germany and
Russia in 1350.
9. Smallpox
Although the death toll is far from that
of the Black Death, smallpox was an
infectious disease that was present in
human societies for centuries. Known
since Roman times, it caused enormous
mortality and there was no general
treatment for its symptoms: very painful
rashes on the skin, pustules and fever
