The agriculture sector needs more financial support from banks in order
to promote sustainable and equitable farming and rural prosperity which
will also help in tackling food security issue in future, according to noted
economist V S Vyas.Speaking at 34th National Bank for Agriculture and
Rural Development (Nabard) Foundation Day Lecture at its regional office
here, Vyas said the areas that have good potential like dairy along with the
farming should also be focused prominently."Banks should be encouraged
to create more capital for agriculture sector for consistent economic
growth. This would also increase productivity in the sector and it would
ensure food security in future," Vyas said.Sunanda Batra, General Manager
at Reserve Bank of India, said that Nabard has played a vital role in
development in the desert state and its contribution has enhanced
productivity and crop yield.She said that innovation in financing by Nabard
has also shown positive results.R K Gupta, state level bankers' committee's
convener, said the banks in the state have not only achieved but surpassed
the mandatory targets in lending and loan disbursement.He said that there
was a need to create financial literacy in rural areas and banks were making
their efforts.Earlier, Chief General Manager - Nabard - Sarita Arora
highlighted the achievements of the bank and said the bank would make all
efforts to achieve its targets.
Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh asked the cooperatives to play
a significant role in implementation of initiatives taken by government for
welfare of the people.Inaugurating a 'krishi mela' at Amargol in Karnataka,
Singh said the cooperative movement in India is one of the largest in the
world."With a network of about 6.10 lakh cooperative societies and a
membership of about 249.20 million, the cooperative movement in India
has emerged as one of the largest in the world," an official statement
quoted Singh as saying.He further said, agricultural credit advanced
through cooperatives has increased from a meagre Rs 214.35 crore in
1960-61 to Rs 8,6185 crore in 2011-12 with about 17 per cent share in total
institutional agricultural credit.
According to the latest cotton report of the Indian Cotton Federation
(ICF), Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) has managed to get a good
response to their e-auctions recently.“Mills are buying for their near
future requirements and exporters and big traders are buying in bulk
quantities as per their assessment of the cotton market trends,” the
report informed.The unsold cotton with CCI as per market reports is
approximately 62 lakh bales out of their total procurement of 86 lakhs
bales in the current season.Also as per market reports, the unsold cotton
stock lying with cotton traders, ginners and MCX is approximately 12
lakh bales.Cotton sowing is in progress in some pockets of Maharashtra
near Beed, as rains have been good till now.However, Saurashtra
region in Gujarat may see a drop in cotton sowing which may be
compensated by increase in sowing in states like Madhya Pradesh,
Telengana and Andhra Pradesh.Approximately 70 per cent cotton
sowing has been completed in major cotton growing states wherever
rains have been timely.In Amreli district in Gujarat, re-sowing will take
place because of the recent floods in this region of Saurashtra.However,
as per reports, khariff sowing is up by more than 50 per cent in this
cotton belt than in the same time last season.
Fresh short position was seen in guarseed due to fragile guargum
export demand coupled with hefty stocks in local mandies.As per the
market sources, weakness in crude oil prices in international market has
reduced the export demand of guar gum. The NYMEX Crude oil prices
moved sharply lower on today after six world powers reached a nuclear
deal with Iran in exchange for removing economic sanctions on the
country, allowing it to resume oil exports.However, fresh sowing has
reported some drop from the last year due to poor rainfall in major
guarseed producing states. As per the market sources, limited rainfall
has been reported in Western part of Rajasthan such as Barmer ,
Bikaner and Jodhpur. This will reduce the sowing acreage in the
current year. However, all the major regions of Haryana have
witnessed adequate rainfall in the current year.

SUGAR PRICES AT KEY SPOT MARKETNational Market Update
The International Sugar Organization (ISO) forecasted a global sugar deficit
of 2.50 MT in 2015-16 (OctSep) which could increase to 6.20 MT in
marketing year 2016-17 (Oct – Sep). Similarly, market participant, Datagro
forecasted a global (sugar) supply deficit of 1.40 MT in 2015-16 compared to
a surplus of 3.9 MT in marketing year 2014-15. While Brazilian agency,
Copersucar forecasted a global sugar deficit of 1.50 MT in marketing year
2015- 16
The Central govt. of India is soon expected to release a relief package of Rs
1950 crore to the cooperative sugar mills in Maharashtra that needs to be
utilized for making pending cane arrears to the farmers.
India’s sugar export rose 90% from last week as the country exported 86.1
thousand tons of sugar for the week ending 28th Jun, 2015 compared to 45.3
thousand tons sugar the previous week.
As per the latest data released by Brazil’s Trade Ministry, the country
exported 1.50 MT of raw sugar in June, 2015 which was 0.79% higher than
the export made last year in June, 2014. In a bid to support local cane millers,
the Brazilian govt. had raised import tariff on ethanol from 9.25 per cent at
present to 11.75 per cent. The step is likely to boost the domestic ethanol
production while combating the mass shipment from largest ethanol producer
U.S.
The Indonesian Sugar Association forecasted the country’s total sugar
(white) production in between 2.45-2.60 million tons for 2015-16 which was
last recorded at 2.58 million tons in 2014-15.
