Paddy sowing has increased by 4.50 per cent to 277.89 lakh hectares so
far in the ongoing kharif season compared with the last year.Paddy sowing

kharif season compared with the last year.Similarly the area under other
kharif crops such as oilseeds, coarse cereals, pulses and cotton has also
increased.Area under pulses has increased to 92.64 lakh hectares from
81.24 lakh hectares, acreage of coarse cereals rises to 158.62 lakh hectares
from 141.43 lakh hectares, as per official data."The total sown area as on
7th August, as per reports received from states, stands at 847.40 lakh
hectare as compared to 808.40 lakh hectare at this time last year,"
Agriculture Ministry said in a statement.Area under oilseeds has increased
to 157.43 lakh hectares from 152.31 lakh hectares in the last season,
sugarcane acreage has also rose to 47.36 lakh hectares from 47.17 lakh
hectares.However, the area under cotton has declined to 105.68 lakh
hectares from 112.24 lakh hectares in the last season, and Jute and Mesta
acreage has also come down to 7.79 lakh hectares from 8.11 lakh hectares.
Arguing that expenses related to food constitute a sizeable portion of
lower-income households, PHD Chamber said that agriculture and agri-
produce including food processing industry should be kept out of
GST."Food is a large portion of spending of lower income households and
any tax on food and farm produce would be regressive since production
and distribution of food as well as agricultural produce is largely
unorganised in India," the industry body said.The chamber said that "since
most food items have been either exempted from tax or taxed at a lower
rate, it should be the attempt of the government to let the agriculture sector
escape taxation in a just manner after the GST legislation is enacted".It also
urged the government to unveil draft rules and regulations relating to
Goods and Services Tax (GST) on public domain to enable industry to
share its comments on the legislation related to the proposed indirect tax
regime.
Jeera settled up due to tight supplies amid higher demand in the spot
market. Though, expectation of higher sowing due to rainfall in major
producing regions, capped some gains. There is a possibility of arriving
Jeera from Syria and Turkey in the world market from August, which
may be negative for jeera export from India. Meanwhile, there are
reports that, cumin crop in China damaged due to heavy
rains.According to latest spice board press release, cumin export is
stood at 155,500 tonnes for 2014-15 period and earned foreign
exchange worth Rs 1,838.20 crore while in 2013-14, the figures stood
at 121,500 tonnes valued at Rs 1,600 crore. As per third advance
estimate of Gujarat State, production is expected at 1.58 lakh tonnes in
2014-15, which is 54.3 per cent lower, compared to last years’
production of 3.46 lakh tonnes. Jeera sowing recorded 2.64 lakh hac,
42% less sowing compared to last year’s 4.54 lakh hac in Gujarat last
year. At Unjha market in Mehsana estimated market supply was at
3000 quintals.At Gondal (Guj.) market estimated market supply was at
120 quintals.At Rajkot market arrivals were reported at 200 quintal.
Turmeric settled up due to receipt of fresh upcountry orders. Further,
rising demand from North India too added support to turmeric prices.
Turmeric sowing area reported high in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu
state during the current sowing period. However, prospects of weak
monsoon in July – August may affect turmeric production in rainfed
areas while irrigated turmeric may not affect much.However, excess
rains during the vegetative and harvesting may adversely affect the
production and quality. At Warangal market sources reported arrivals
at 150 bags. At Nizamabad market arrivals were reported at 800
quintals. At Duggirala market total arrivals are at 339 quintals.Spot
turmeric prices increased at Erode markets due to receipt of North
Indian demand.Some traders have received fresh upcountry orders and
were quoting higher price for the quality turmeric. But overall only
medium turmeric arrival was very high. The buyers also showed
interest in the root variety.

National Market Update
Cotton export to China from India has declined by 56.72 per cent in 2014-
15, which has caused cotton prices in domestic market to fall drastically. In
year 2014-15 India exported only 26 lakh bales of cotton to China in 2014-15
against 61 lakh bales in 2013-14. Citing the situation, Commerce and Industry
Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said in the written reply to Rajya Sabha that due
to this reason cotton domestic prices are ruling weaker as compared to the
previous year and cotton policy adopted by China is the major cause for less
imports.
According to the officials, India is likely to sell its cotton to Thailand too,
after succeeding in selling cotton to Bangladesh. One of the biggest mills in
Thailand has shown interest in buying cotton from India. According to the CCI
officials, samples of cotton from India have approved and CCI is all set to get
buyers from Thailand, besides Bangladesh.
Around 91.7% of the cotton sowing has been completed in Gujarat,
according to State Agriculture Department. Area sown under cotton as on 03
August this year stood 25.01 lakh hectares in Gujarat against the total normal
area of 27.26 lakh hectares. The cotton area in the state is approximately
11.3% lower when compared to the previous year area as on date, which was
28.20 lakh hectares.
Around 105.68 lakh hectares of cotton has been sown so far throughout the
country, as on 07 August this year. This is around 5.84% lower than the
corresponding sowing progress of last season which was 112.24 lakh hectares,
according to Ministry of Agriculture.
