Coastal erosion is a major environmental issue in Hawaii, with 13 miles of beaches having eroded in the past century and beaches expected to erode up to 40 feet by 2100. Plastic pollution is also a large problem, harming wildlife that ingest microplastics. Hawaii is home to many endangered plant and animal species, with over 400 listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act, as the state has a very high percentage of endemic species.
