3. Embarking on the path of sustainable development
will require a profound transformation of how we think
and act. To create a more sustainable world and to
engage with sustainability-related issues as described in
the SDGs, individuals must become sustainability change-
makers with redefined mindsets.
4. They require the knowledge, skills, values and
attitudes that empower them to contribute to
sustainable development. Education, therefore, is
crucial for the achievement of sustainable
development. However, not all kinds of education
support sustainable development. Education that
promotes economic growth alone may well also lead
to an increase in unsustainable consumption patterns.
5. Enhancing the cognitive objectives of the gifted
children using open science and DIY strategies will
empower learners to take informed decisions and
responsible actions for environmental integrity,
economic viability, sustainable livelihood and a just
society for present and future generations.

8. Education in a nutshell.
Education is a process of acquiring knowledge either
formally or informally for the holistic development of
an individual.
9. • Gifted children are those who exhibit exceptional intelligence in
specific areas of specialization or field.
• Children who give evidence of high performance capability in
areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic or leadership
capabilities or academic fields who require activities not
ordinarily provided by the school in other to fully develop those
abilities.
Who are the gifted
children?
10. • Gender issues- Gifted and talented females face
conflicts between their own abilities and the social
structure of their world.
• Attitude of teachers- Teachers concentrate on
children from wealthy homes and neglect the gifted
ones.
• Financial issues- Due to financial instability, gifted
children may not afford proper education.
• Environmental issues- Places people live influence
their thoughts and mindset and after sometime they
adapt to the certain lifestyle, losing their talent.
What are the factors
that militate against
effective
discernment of
giftedness?
11. • Friendship Issues- One of the potentially most
difficult aspects of giftedness is having trouble
making or keeping friends. Gifted children may
appear to be socially mature and well adjusted,
but might feel lonely or sad about problems
with peers.
• Unrealistic Expectations- Gifted kids tend to be
their own toughest critic. Many struggle with
testing because of the sky-high expectations
they feel when they sit down for an exam.
• Self-Esteem Issues- Being gifted academically
can make a child feel different from her peers
and may even lead to the child being bullied and
becoming depressed.
Challenges gifted students
face?
12. Although there are two generally accepted purposes for providing special education for
young people with high potential, these two purposes in combination give rise to a third
purpose that is intimately related to the conception of giftedness question.
• Opportunities for self-fulfillment- The first purpose of gifted education is to provide
young people with maximum opportunities for self-fulfillment through the
development and expression of one or a combination of performance areas where
superior potential may be present.
WHY SHOULD A SOCIETY DEVOTE SPECIAL RESOURCES TO
THE DEVELOPMENT OF GIFTEDNESS
13. More Skills-The second purpose is to increase society’s reservoir of persons who
will help solve the problems of contemporary civilization by becoming producers of
knowledge and art rather than mere consumers of existing information.
In other words, self-satisfying work of scientists, artists, writers, entrepreneurs, and
leaders in all walks of life has the potential to produce results that are valuable
contributions to society. If we agree with these two goals of gifted education, and if
we believe that our programs should produce the next generation of leaders,
problem solvers, and persons who will make important contributions to all areas of
human productivity then the third purpose of gifted education is to show the
sensibility in modeling special programs and services after the modus operandi of
these persons rather than after those of good lesson learners.

16. CONCLUSION
Because of want of time, in-depth of explanation may not be given to the
chat in this presentation but efforts has been made to highlight the basic
factors leading to the realization of the goal. However research is on going in
the rural areas to discover more gifted children in areas that has not be
explored to ensure sustainability of African children development.
