A slide presentation on the importance of skill in the 21st century and how it can enable us to overcome the knowledge gap, specially in developing countries like India.

Show me and I may

will understand.”

3. INTRODUCTION
What is the difference between skill based education and knowledge-
based education?
There is a very simple difference between the two-
• Skill based education requires experience. It is based on the theory
that everything can be learnt better if it is practiced better in real life.
It is a process in which education is related to the qualities that a
person possesses, and isn’t necessarily confined to pen and paper
education.
• Knowledge based education involves books. It focusses on the
traditional ‘read and write’ system. It often means rote learning and
is practiced in a lot of schools.
5. “Education is important, but skill is
necessary”
▪ We need skill for the simple reason that bookish knowledge can
only help us succeed till a certain limit.
▪ When we are learning the subject ‘science’ , we often perform
experiments in the lab related to the topics we are currently learning
about.
▪ This is because it is a very well known fact that we gain the most
amount of ‘real’ knowledge from doing a particular activity in real life
than reading the theory behind it.
▪ It transforms that basic knowledge to knowledge headed towards
success and progress.
6. In our society it is not only knowledge that
matters; if you have the skill to do something you
can guarantee work.Assessment system enables
students to demonstrate what they can do.We
should be assessing the ability of students to
utilize newly acquired skills and knowledge, rather
than their ability to remember something that was
taught some time ago, which isn’t much of a skill.
Think of the people of the future.Who is to be the
leaders of the country if they are unable to apply
what they have learned in their school life, to the
outside world? What would be the purpose of
them being in the school that was used to educate
them and to prepare them of the real world, if they
are unable use them in the real world
7. Skill acquiring isn’t just a technique;
it is the very basic art of survival.
▪ Skill is the dire need of the hour because it is the backbone of a
country. It enables the citizens to contribute more efficiently to a
particular field.
▪ People who have skill based education are better learners. Since they
have learnt from experience, they tend to keep adding inputs to their
knowledge bank. Thus, for them, the learning process never stops
8. HOW DO WE PROVE THIS?
▪ Let us take the example of a classroom.
▪ Every class has all sorts of children in the class- from the smartest to
the dumbest. But when we talk about classifying them as smart or
dumb, what criteria do we use? Is knowledge derived from books our
principle for measuring smartness?
▪ It is quite possible, that were the class ‘topper’ and the ‘failure’ put in
the same adverse situation, then the failure may perform better and
the topper may crumble under the stress.
▪ While some children are not good at academics, they excel at co-
curricular activities. Thus, if we limit our education to only books, we
are wasting precious human resource.
9. We must teach kids more day-to-day skills and
knowledge, such as how mortgages work and easy
ways to pay them off, how to pay taxes, how to change
tires of vehicles, how to use basic electrical equipment
and so on.This enables each and every citizen of the
country to be a house of resource and be responsible
for himself/ herself.
10. How do we imbibe skill?
▪ We teach them the skills of the grade, and we guide them on how to
use the talents that they have to understand and apply those skills.
▪ A student can be skilful, even have innate abilities or one's acquired
through time, or things self-taught, but education moulds
information, that is still knowledge, and makes it reach the
expectations of the grade level and age.
▪ we need to encourage individual initiative, where students who try
hard whether academically, vocationally, socially or physically are
both looked at in high regard. While those who may not succeed in
these categories are encouraged to try harder, possibly through
taking courses more centered on these skills.
11. Education is the process
of teaching-learning the
skills of each grade at a
school or university, and
this process takes place,
from the teacher's
perspective, by
promoting in students
the use of their talents,
skills, knowledge,
creativity; and
reinforcing them to it's
maximum potential.
