This document summarizes a research paper that proposes using a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to achieve both voltage control and damping improvement for an integrated 80 MW offshore wind farm and 40 MW marine-current farm connected to the electric grid. The wind farm is modeled as a doubly-fed induction generator and the marine-current farm uses a squirrel-cage induction generator. A PID damping controller is designed for the STATCOM using modal control theory to provide dynamic stability under various operating conditions. Simulation results using eigenvalue analysis and nonlinear time-domain simulations show that the proposed STATCOM controller is effective in stabilizing the system and controlling voltage fluctuations due to power variations from the wind and marine-current resources.
