DIRECT TO INDIRECT:
A person’s speech can be reported in two ways:-
1. Direct Speech: by quoting the actual words of the speaker
in the inverted commas.
Example: Rishi said, “I cannot dance.”
2. Indirect speech: here the meaning of the meaning of the
sentence is conveyed without using actual words.
Example: Rishi said that he could not dance.
Things to remember about Direct Speech
 It is to be placed in inverted commas.
 The sentence is separated by a comma from the reporting
verb.
 It begins with the capital letter.
Things to remember about Indirect Speech
 Inverted commas are not used.
 To separate the speech from the reporting verb comma is
not used.
 After the reporting verb we use conjunctions like if, that, if
necessary.
 The tense of reporting verb is not to be changed.
 Pronouns which are used to show the position are changed
in the Indirect Speech.
The words which are used for expressing nearness are
changed into words expressing distance:

 Now - Then
 Today - That day
 Tonight - That night
 Yesterday - The previous day

There is no change in the reported part when:
 Reported part is a universal truth.
 Reported part is a historical fact.
 Reported part is an imagined condition.
