Purpose: This assignment will help you develop the research and writing skills required for organized, clear, and evidence-based argument to convince a skeptical audience within your field. You will use these skills in your future college courses and anytime you are making a case to a skeptical audience. Beyond that, you will also use the research skills whenever you are faced with a life decision when the questions are particularly important: Which medical treatment should I choose? Who should I vote for? Which colleges should I consider transferring to? How should I parent my children? What food should I consume? How much should I exercise? What is the deeper meaning behind the art, music, or TV I consume? etc. You will use the language skills, specifically, any time the situation requires written words: writing that cover letter, proposing a project to your manager, creating accurate, detailed patient notes, texting an old flame, writing your senator, etc.
Description: In English 102, you will examine and refine your own writing process as you create an argument-driven research paper of 8-10 pages, using 6-10 credible, college-level sources that discuss a specific topic within the writer’s chosen Area of Study or other intellectual interest. Those students who have not formally identified an Area of Study will investigate an issue addressed by a field or profession of interest to them.
The writer’s argument will address the writer’s class peers in the chosen Area of Study and future professors in the field. The writer will assume that some members of the essay’s skeptical audience will disagree with the argument presented in the essay.
The essay will use the discipline-specific style guide (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago) commonly used by those writing in the chosen Area of Study or field.

In your personal, academic, and professional life, it will be important to establish and reflect on goals, to periodically examine what you have accomplished, and to ask critical questions about your learning: What did I hope to accomplish in this class/project/ experience? How did I grow as a person, scholar, or professional? What evidence do I have for that growth? How does this growth prepare me for what is next? In many contexts, you will be asked to discuss, either in person or in writing, what kind of student or employee you will be. In these contexts,
it is reflective analysis that will allow you to examine your experience for the evidence you need to construct clear and honest answers for yourself and others.
Your Reflective Analysis should accomplish four tasks:

In your Reflective Analysis, you should, of course, provide proper in-text citation of your sources, just as you would with any other source in a composition. In this case, however, your sources are your own compositions; so, you’ll be citing yourself. Here is an example:

developments has the world’s literature continuous evolution brought? For instance, it is evident that new systems of education come with new developments in language and generally new ways of doing things. First, there is improvement of study materials such as the development of plagiarism checker. Plagiarism checker has boosted standards of education by ensuring that students deliver original work and free from grammatical errors. Secondly, there is creation of clear writing instructions
and consistent conduct important in the education field. In addition, a ‘profession’s ethics’ are continuously unfolding conclusions of a more or less conscious discussion. It explains how members of a given profession should work together to achieve the common and preferred goal. According to (Davis, 2002), it is the product of a social contract which various parties share a common profession.
Proper Research Techniques
Proper research involves adhering to the set ethical norms set by scholars. This is because norms promote and develop the research aims, knowledge, truth and evidence. In research, there can be a wide range of ethical issues. These issues range from plagiarism to confidentiality. One of the most discussed factors is plagiarism. It is a complex ethical problem that has affected the performance of students learning institutions. The availability of plagiarism detection software has made it possible to monitor student assignments, exams and research papers (Hayen & Laverty, 2015). It discourages the culture where students are tempted to copy other author’s work.
The creation of plagiarism checkers also improved student’s learning and research skills by promoting creativity. For example, students are required to submit original work, which reflects their creativity. Ethical research conduct is also required since it provides guidelines set forth by the IRB on how research papers should be handled. It guide learners in writing based on their own composed formats. However, ethical conduct in research is a choice, and students should choose to research by ensuring they abide by ethical conducts stipulated.
Although students are encouraged to think broadly, using the correct citation and giving credit to sources is the right thing to do. This project is the culminating writing and research project of the semester, building on the skills you have developed throughout the semester. In a sense, many restrictions are gone: you must define the current issue you write about, you must define the audience you are writing to, and you must determine-to a larger extent- how to best organize and present information. You should draw on the rhetorical concepts we discussed early in the semester (logos, pathos, ethos, kairos, doxa) to consider how to most effectively craft this essay.

For this essay, the problem must be related to a current issue of your choice; you may choose a topic from one of the class case studies or a different topic of your own. It must, however, have been relevant in the last six months. Drawing on the sources you presented in your annotated bibliography- and substituting other sources as necessary- you will persuade your audience that a problem exists and that your solutions(s) is best, at least for the time being.
The following process may be useful as you create your proposal:
· Choose an issue to research. Make sure it is timely (relevant within the last six months) and something you care about, since you will spend a lot of time working with this topic. When taking the purpose into account, it is imperative that the purpose be kept in mind so that the essay stays focused on the stated thesis.
Audience: If the essay is meant to inform for general readers, helpful sources should include examples, characteristics and origins. If the essay is meant to persuade then the focus may shift toward a more emotional tone that ignites the reader’s feelings and wish for change. If the approach is satiric the focus can show a more humorous definition but be sure to choose a topic that is appropriate for humor. As always, the audience for college essays should be inclusionary and be for all to read and written at an adult level.
· When developing the information to be added to a definition essay remember to:
· 1st – choose a term that fulfills the definition requirement and is a topic that is broad enough to define (i.e. cult, friend, loyalty, academic honesty, effective parenting)
· 2nd – Classify the term (i.e. Academic dishonesty – cheating)

Definition Essay is Due ________________. It is to meet the following criteria:
1. 2-3pages in length; not including the Works Cited page
2. Follow your formatting style and provide both in-text citing and a bibliography page.

Purpose: The purpose for definition writing is to provide a more detailed and extended definition than is generally found in a dictionary or simple definition. If you take an informative approach the tone should be detached and objective. If the tone takes a persuasive slant, the tone might be more urgent. A third possibility for definition is satiric, where a funny approach works well.
When taking the purpose into account, it is imperative that the purpose be kept in mind so that the essay stays focused on the stated thesis.
Audience: If the essay is meant to inform for general readers, helpful sources should include examples, characteristics and origins. If the essay is meant to persuade then the focus may shift toward a more emotional tone that ignites the reader’s feelings and wish for change. If the approach is satiric the focus can show a more humorous definition but be sure to choose a topic that is appropriate for humor. As always, the audience for college essays should be inclusionary and be for all to read and written at an adult level.
· When developing the information to be added to a definition essay remember to:
· 1st – choose a term that fulfills the definition requirement and is a topic that is broad enough to define (i.e. cult, friend, loyalty, academic honesty, effective parenting)
· 2nd – Classify the term (i.e. Academic dishonesty – cheating)

Many believe that we are in serious trouble today as human beings plunging headlong into a major climate crisis on planet earth.

Here I offer an interpretation of environmentalism, a body of principles and practices so recently manifest in national thought that its meanings are still disputed. It is called, for example, "a theology of the earth," "a religion of self restraint," and "a science rooted in resource management and ecology." I define it broadly as "a movement toward understanding humankind's natural bases of support while continuously applying what is learned toward perpetuating those bases."
The word environmentalism entered the American vernacular during the 1960s. An editorial in Science (Klopsteg 1966) noted that "one of the newest fads in Washington-and elsewhere-is 'environmental science.' The term has political potency even if its meaning is vague and questionable." Environmentalism was at first perceived by the public as merely a response to a crisis, but it quickly proved more than that. As Lord Ashby (1978:3) explained to a Stanford University group:
A crisis is a situation that will pass; it can be resolved by temporary hardship, temporary adjustment, technological and political expedients. What we are experiencing is not a crisis, it is a climacteric. For the rest of man's history on earth. . . he will have to live with problems of population, of resources, of pollution.
The vision of environmentalism is to preserve those things in nature which will allow the human enterprise, or civilization, to endure and improve. (I use the word nature for the world without humans, a concept which-like the square root of minus one-is unreal, but useful.) Because civilization depends absolutely on surroundings that are healthful and stimulating, environmentalism aims to protect both material and spiritual values. At the risk of oversimplifying, 1 review five articles of faith which support and energize the environmental movement. They reflect ideas developed by "earthkeepers" from the time of George Perkins Marsh (1801-1882) down to the present.
1) All things are connected. The cosmos is a set of dependencies so complex that its boundaries lie forever beyond understanding. Simply lifting a spadeful of garden soil disturbs a trillion protistan lives, impinges on the lifter's muscles and mind, and changes the landscape. The National Park Service manages all the national parks in the U.S. The agency also is tasked with the management of the monument. According to the environmental policy, the main purpose of this body is to offer recreational activities for citizens and at the same time preserving the ecosystems (Dale, 2015). The BLM and the Forest Service, on the other hand, plays the role of extraction of resources like timbers. The U.S Forest service agency operates within the U.S Department of Agriculture administering the national grasslands and forests. The Bureau of Land Management operates under the United States Department of the Interior tasked with the distribution of public land. Unlike the forest service which has land all over the country, BLM land is only located in the western half of the country.
Wild Horse and Burro Act are one of the agencies formed under federal land management to preserve the native plants. The act formed in 1971 had direct effects on the Bureau of land management since it limited the techniques of BLM eliminating wild horses or rather animals that could sustain oneself on the BLM lands but instead require their protection (Loomis, 2002). Initially, the BLM was of the idea that those animals be killed, but it had to change their direction and adopted a Horse program. The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
