The purpose of this assignment is to:
a) start up and close down hardware and software in order to perform CAD activities
b) be able to produce a circuit diagram using CAD
Scenario
You are an employee for ‘Hi-Viz’, an electronics company, working in the CAD office.
You have been asked to produce the circuit diagram of a circuit that can be used to
flash a number of LEDs in a number of their products. A picture of the
breadboarded circuit has been given to you by one of the engineering development
team and is attached to this assignment.
Task 1
a) Write a report using diagrams and printscreens to show how you would start up the computer
system, load the CAD software and ensure the drawing environment has been set up correctly
to start a CAD drawing and a produce border and title block.
b) Write a report using diagrams and printscreens to show what steps you would take to close
down the CAD system appropriately so that work is not lost.

Task 2
The procedure in the Hi-Viz company is to ensure that drawings are catalogued in a way that is
user-friendly. Set up an electronic folder called ‘HI-VIZ’, enabling the drawing you produce to be
easily accessible when saved for future copies, updates and/or modifications to be made.

Task 3
Produce the electrical circuit diagram using the available CAD software from the information and
circuit given. Hi-Viz use the layout for a standard engineering drawing setup. The title is HI-VIZ
DRAWING 0001.
The test circuit was set up on prototype breadboard, as follows:
With the values of R1 = 1K, R2 = 68K and C = 1μF (electrolytic) as shown, the LED should flash at
around 10 Hz. The LED is protected by a 680R resistor. Pin 5 (control voltage) is connected to 0V
by a 10nF non-polarised capacitor and there is a 47 μF electrolytic capacitor connected across the
supply voltage of 9V.

Store, retrieve and print off the circuit diagram by saving the file in the ‘HI-VIZ’ folder set up in task
2 with a filename corresponding to the drawing title, then setting up the printer to print off a copy of
your circuit diagram, HI-VIZ DRAWING 0001 in A3 Landscapeformat.

Task 5
A student engineer is going to be visiting the Hi-Viz company for a period of work experience.
Produce a simple brochure to be given to visitors such as students that describes four typical
problems that may be encountered when (a) starting up, and (b) closing down the computer
hardware and CAD software and the procedure you would use to sort them out.
