Why facility managers are crucial to introducing sustainabilityJohn Machado
As technology becomes more accessible than ever, sustainability initiatives are becoming exponentially easier for companies to implement. Targets are being put in place by companies, motivated by factors like climate awareness, customer expectations or regulations being set by governmental bodies. At the centre of this nexus of change stands the facility manager, making it possible to conceptualise and implement these plans.

How to make sustainability part of your energy strategy - SmartestEnergySmartestEnergy
How to make sustainability part of your energy strategy - presented by James Graham, Head of Direct Sales, at the Energy Management Forum event in Birmingham on 20th May 2015.
The government have targets to reduce the UK's carbon emissions and a way of doing this is by encouraging home owners and businesses to take up the use of renewable energy products to heat their home or business.
The Renewable Heat Incentive is designed to support home owners and businesses to purchase these products which are eco friendly. So not only do those that use Renewable energy make a saving on heating bills and reduce their carbon footprint but they also receive cash for doing so.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

3. Wholesale energy prices are volatile and non-commodity costs are
increasing. One way to combat rising bills is to reduce your energy
consumption and improve your efficiency. For many businesses, a
20% cut in energy costs represents the same bottom line benefit
as a 5% increase in sales. Energy Solutions can help you do this.
introduction to Energy Solutions
What is an Energy Solution?
Energy Solutions is the division of Utilitywise responsible for delivering consumption reduction, renewable technology and on-site
generation solutions to our clients’ estates. With over 100 years combined experience in this sector we are uniquely placed to tackle your
sites’ ever-changing energy requirements. Our flexible approach to developing solutions means you can be confident we will deliver what
you need, when you need it. Our services range from single technology installations to energy audits and turnkey solutions, developed in
partnership with our clients and delivered by our in-house project management team. To complement our solutions we place a significant
emphasis on Staff Awareness Training and embedding a culture of sustainability and energy efficiency with everyone involved. We can
also help devise and implement Carbon Management Plans and a detailed Energy Policy for your organisation.
Our agnostic approach gives us the freedom to focus on what’s right for you and your business, giving you the peace of mind that the
project has your goals at heart. If required, we can also refer you to a variety of potential funding solutions to support your Energy
Solutions journey.
Aimed at organisations with an appetite for identifying and implementing consumption reduction or on-site generation projects, Energy
Solutions is a holistic approach to your electricity, gas, water and carbon issues. Our process follows a simple 5 step plan;
1. Scoping Visit – carried out by our Energy Solutions Architect to ensure that there is potential to either reduce consumption, deliver on-
site generation or a combination of both opportunities.
2. Energy Solutions Survey (ESS) – pulls together all the potential opportunities for reduction and generation, discusses funding and
builds a commercial business case for project investment. The ESS will be delivered to key stakeholders as a workshop presentation.
3. Project Development Stage (PDS) – commences on agreement and is designed to refine and develop the project into a deliverable
solution, agree the commercials and any potential funding. The PDS will also be presented as a workshop. On project commencement
we will assign a Project Manager to oversee the delivery of the solutions on your behalf.
4. Project Delivery – our expert Project Management team will take on the responsibility as primary contractor and deliver the entire
project on your behalf. They will manage everything, leaving you free to get on with running your business.
5. On-going Partnership – it’s our intention to continue to work with you once the project has been completed. We can support the
technical measures with Staff Awareness Training, marketing campaigns or even developing a bespoke Energy Policy.

4. Energy Solutions projects aren’t just about using less kWh, they can
be a catalyst for change across your entire business; by reducing
operational costs, thereby increasing margins, improving efficiency
and in many cases providing additional revenue streams.
Our team can help you realise the above benefits by enabling you to
use less, take advantage of government incentives to generate your
own electricity/heat, and stay up to date with relevant legislation.
In an ever-changing market with global pressures on the supply of
energy, and legislation impacting on future prices, you need to take
action now to mitigate rising costs. Starting your Energy Solutions
journey today means planning for your business’ future energy needs.

5. FIND YOUR ROUTE TO ENERGY EFFICIENCY
There are four routes to energy saving measures that Utilitywise can help you with;
1 Energy Solutions Project
This route will give you the most comprehensive view of energy saving opportunities you can take advantage of and is a detailed
investigation into your sites’ energy use, assets and fabric. We’ll work in partnership with your business to create a tailored solution
that will:
• Reduce your consumption and wastage
• Identify and implement potential on-site generation opportunities
• Guide you towards a leaner and more efficient estate
We’ll present the findings of our survey to you as a workshop business case. The cost of our initial survey is refundable should you
proceed with an Energy Solutions project. We can also refer you to a variety of potential funding solutions.
The Energy Solutions journey:
2 ESOS Solutions Project
We will implement elements from your ESOS Recommendations Report so you can benefit from your compliance with the scheme. We
can also assist you with ISO 50001 certification to help you obtain a robust structure for energy efficiency ahead of ESOS phase 2.
3 Energy Audit
Undertaken by a Utilitywise Energy Surveyor, this is a top-level audit that will review your buildings’ energy use. Though this is not as
in-depth as an Energy Solutions project it will still provide you with a Recommendation Report which will provide you with an outline of
the potential opportunities at your site(s).
4 Individual Technology Installation
If you know of an energy saving solution you would like implemented at your site, such as solar panels for your roof, we can match and
introduce you to a long-term specialist partner who will assist with your chosen project.

6. SOLUTIONSFORALLBUSINESSES
Below you’ll find examples of solutions and technologies that can be implemented in a variety of different
organisations, along with the benefits they can bring.
School
HVAC (Heating, Ventilating Air Conditioning)
These systems control temperature, humidity and quality of air in buildings.
Heating costs rise by about 8% for each 1°C of overheating (Carbon Trust).
Traditional boilers
Boilers provide heat and hot water within most buildings and are often linked to HVAC systems.
Your heating costs can increase by 30% or more as a result of poorly operated or maintained boilers.
Office
Solar PV
Solar photovoltaics (PV), more commonly known as solar panels, convert sunlight into electricity for use in buildings or
export to the grid.
Installations can reduce CO2
by up to 10% and you could earn money through the Feed-in Tariff (Carbon Trust).
Staff Awareness Training
We can help educate and motivate your teams to use energy and water more efficiently.
Most businesses could save 10% on their energy bills through behavioural changes.
Hospital
Chillers
Self-contained units which produce chilled water or fluid for use in process or air conditioning equipment.
Typical savings for an 800kW process chiller can be up to £25,000 per annum (Carbon Trust).
LED
A light emitting diode (LED) is highly efficient and emits light when conducting current.
Up to 40% of a building’s electricity use is accounted for by lighting (Carbon Trust). LEDs use 90% less energy than
traditional lamps (DECC Advice Guide).
Zoo
Biomass boilers
These systems commonly burn wood pellets or wood chips and typical Return on Investment is 15-18%.
Burning wood only emits the same amount of CO2
as absorbed during its growth, so it is classed as carbon neutral.
Wind Solutions
Turbines produce electricity by capturing the natural power of wind to drive a generator.
Wind power is the most well developed and economically viable form of renewable energy (Carbon Trust).

11. Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)
This Government environmental programme offers financial incentives to increase
the uptake of renewable heat. By providing a long-term financial incentive (payable for
20 years) the aim of RHI is to significantly grow the proportion of heat generated from
renewable sources.
Feed-In Tariff (FiT)
The FiT scheme is designed to promote small-scale renewable and low-carbon
electricity generation technologies and is available through licensed electricity
suppliers. It requires some suppliers to make tariff payments on both generation and
export of renewable and low-carbon electricity. However, recent changes to the scheme
mean you need to act quickly to maximise the benefits.
Funding
Historically, a lack of funding has been a major barrier to getting Energy Solutions
projects started. This has led to a large number of organisations managing increased
heating and cooling requirements with old and inefficient plant.
Across the UK, estates teams are being tasked to deliver more in the face of lower
budgets and uncertain energy costs. This conflict between opportunity and investment
should no longer be the case. The majority of the Energy Solutions opportunities
Utilitywise uncover require some form of funding solution and we are confident that
there’s a solution to suit everyone.
If required, we can refer you to a variety of potential funding solutions to support your
Energy Solutions journey. Certain government incentives provide subsidies for renewal
technologies, which can strengthen your case internally for Energy Solutions projects.
