Who we are
Energy Cybernetics is a South African company
established in 1998. For the past 17 years, we were
active in the fields of energy efficiency and
resource management.
During the past 17 years we have undertaken and
completed energy projects in South Africa, United
States, Australia, United Arab Emirates,
Botswana, Kenya, Angola, Zambia, Mozambique
and Zimbabwe where well over 200 industrial and
commercial energy audits, over 220 Measurement
and Verification (M&V), as well as monitoring and
evaluation projects, have been successfully
concluded.

Finding the Opportunities
Finding energy efficiency opportunities in almost any
type of facility is not difficult. It is often quite easy to
identify projects with a simple walk-through audit.
However, it is far more challenging to identify the
MOST APPROPRIATE opportunities that will result
in the best return on capital. A project developer
who specialises in energy efficient lighting retrofit
projects can very quickly assess whether a particular
site represents a potential “sales opportunity” to his
business. In fact, any experienced vendor of a
particular technology or product can quickly
determine whether he can make a sale to a particular
client.
Our approach is different. When we assess a site in
order to identify energy efficiency opportunities, we
approach the site holistically and with no pre-
conceived solutions or products in mind. Our
mission is to find THE BEST energy efficiency
opportunities for our clients that will lead to the
greatest financial benefit. These opportunities can
often take the form of improvements to operational
procedures and methods. Such interventions can
yield substantial returns, but it requires some form of
organizational change and buy-in from employees,
managers and most importantly – true commitment
from top management. In addition to operational
based savings, we also identify appropriate
equipment upgrades and new technologies that
will yield acceptable returns on investment.

Implementing the Opportunities
When we implement energy efficiency projects,
Energy Cybernetics acts as the Project Developer.
We specifically do not act as distributors or agents of
a specific product or technology, as we believe that
this will create a bias when we identify opportunities.
As part of the EOH Group, we bring considerable
organisational capacity and expertise to the table
when we implement solutions. In addition to the
capabilities of the EOH Group, we can also draw on
our network of suppliers, sub-contractors and
business partners for project delivery.
Our in-house Project Management Office is staffed
with professional project managers who manage
implementation projects to deliver results as
promised, on time and in budget.
Sustainable Energy Management
An observation that is common to many energy
efficiency projects is that the delivered solution does
not make adequate provision for measuring,
monitoring, and reporting of the project impact.
This makes it very difficult to report on the success of
the project, as the success is often “intangible”, i.e. a
saving. If a project does not explicitly make
provision for the quantification of the project
impact, it is likely that future energy efficiency
projects within that same organization will be met
with doubt and scepticism because of a previous lack
of credibility.
Another common challenge associated with energy
efficiency projects stems from the very nature of such
projects – they lead to change i.e. after the project
the day-to-day routine and behaviour of most, if not
all people, in an organization must change.
Without adequate training, awareness campaigns
and leadership from top management, such
pervasive organization change is not likely to
succeed or if it does, it will not be maintained.
