Fuel cells convert fuel into electricity through electrochemical reactions. There are several types of fuel cells including PEM, SOFC, AFC, and DMFC. Fuel cells have advantages like eliminating pollution from fossil fuels and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, fuel cells also have disadvantages such as the difficulty of hydrogen production, transportation, and storage. The global fuel cell industry has grown significantly in recent years but still faces challenges in bringing down costs. Major markets for fuel cell development include the US, Canada, Japan, Europe, Germany, and Singapore.
Mark W. Johnson and Josh Suskewicz argue that focusing solely on developing individual clean technologies is not enough to transition away from fossil fuels. They propose a disruptive innovation approach that considers:
1) Enabling technologies paired with innovative business models and careful adoption strategies.
2) Creating whole new energy systems rather than just parts, as seen in the example of Better Place developing electric vehicles and charging infrastructure together.
3) Factors like government policy, as projects like Masdar City and its cleantech investments have advantages normal private projects lack due to government support.
Transitioning energy systems requires a holistic approach beyond technology alone.
The document discusses accelerating the adoption of solar energy in the United States to reduce reliance on natural gas for electricity generation. It argues that solar photovoltaics have the potential to significantly displace natural gas if costs can be reduced through manufacturing improvements, economies of scale, and limited public subsidies over 10 years. With the right policies and market conditions, solar could achieve cost parity with retail electricity and create many local jobs in manufacturing and installation. Political will is needed to pass mandates and use public benefits to justify initial cost reductions that drive the solar industry to self-sufficiency.
The document is an abstract for a presentation about managing new energy technology alternatives for India's captive power industry. It discusses India's growing energy needs due to economic expansion and development. It analyzes different technologies like natural gas combined cycle and fuel cells that could be used for industrial captive power generation based on factors like cost and emissions. Modeling of different socioeconomic scenarios in India indicates that natural gas technologies are best in times of low growth while fuel cells are suited to high growth. Further renewable energy research is needed to reduce costs. The abstract recommends technology strategies for manufacturers, consultants and industrial customers.

Energy storage has been in use in our society and daily life for decades. Although energy storage has not grown to be a significant part of the electric energy system, recent advancement of energy storage technologies and growing needs for energy storage in both power and transportation sectors make it possible and imperative to accelerate energy storage development, deployment, and adoption. Power systems have to balance electricity generation and consumption in real-time, gasoline and diesel fuel are still the primary sources of energy for transportation, and we generally do not have good ways to conveniently and cost-effectively store a large amount of electrical energy and use it in an on-demand manner. While we need to continue decarbonizing electric power generation through increases in renewable generation, we also need to address transportation as the main source of carbon emissions. Energy storage is an important solution to address both electrification of transportation and other industries and the variability in renewable energy such as wind and solar generation.
Bulk of the existing grid energy storage capacity is provided by pumped hydro energy storage plants that were built to support large baseload power plants such as nuclear generating stations. Battery energy systems are beginning to be deployed at a rapid pace. The requirements of energy storage in the electric grid are still evolving and may differ from those of electrical transportation. Needs for research and development to enhance energy storage performance and knowledge is summarized in the following areas:
1) Energy storage engineering and integration: Effective system integration is a challenging problem for energy storage due to the great diversity of potential applications ranging from behind-the-meter storage to large grid-connected energy storage plants. Each of these applications has its own set of constraints and performance requirements. Over the next decade, the diversity of energy storage installations will expand in the range of applications, in size and scale, and in system complexity. Effective integration is also important to achieve desired cost reduction needed to support large scale deployment. Research gaps in this area include: energy storage installations with higher power capacities and higher working voltages; streamlining engineering to hybridize and co-optimize energy storage with the rest of the system; more effective controls, sensors, and energy management systems; designing modular power converter architecture to minimize system complexity, improve reliability, and reduce integration costs; and industry standards for secure communication and interoperability.
The document discusses a scenario where political will accelerates a dramatic shift in the global energy mix away from petroleum towards hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. This would require massive investments in hydrogen production infrastructure and fuel cell technology to bring costs down and make the scenario viable. The biggest risks and barriers are the ability to reduce fuel cell and hydrogen costs at scale, as well as generating sufficient political will through public-private cooperation and incentives on the scale of other major programs.
Technology can help address challenges with renewable energy sources like wind power. Information technology can help optimize balancing of supply and demand when wind is intermittent through analytics, system orchestration, and automated remote operation. IT can also help speed scale and reduce costs through design innovation, installation simplicity, and smart asset operations and maintenance. Finally, IT can help enable the necessary physical infrastructure through solutions like a smart grid management platform and supply chain optimization to enable efficient development of renewable resources.

The new CIBSE guide TM56 aims to help engineers assess the whole-life environmental footprint of building services materials and products. It explains that focusing only on energy efficiency ignores other impacts like resource extraction, manufacturing emissions, and end-of-life impacts. While building services make up around 5% of initial embodied carbon for a building, they account for approximately 32% of embodied carbon over a 100-year life cycle due to maintenance, replacement and disposal. Considering whole-life impacts will help reduce costs, volatility, and environmental damage from mining and pollution.

Jochem E. et al (2002) Steps towards a 2000 Watt-Society. Developing a White Paper on Research & Development of Energy-Efficient Technologies - Executive Summary - 19 p.
Executive summary
In the coming decades, the threat and consequences of
climate change and of the re-concentration of crude oil
production in the Near East will compel industrialised nations
to make much more efficient use of energy. R&D that helps
realise energy efficiency potentials is likely to be regarded as
important in scientific, entrepreneurial, and political realms.
Demand for highly energy-efficient technologies will rise
steeply, and firms that can provide them will prosper. The
identification of energy-efficient technologies and related
energy conservation potentials undertaken in this pre-study is
a first step toward designing a R&D strategy that is consistent
with the need to evolve towards a 2000 Watt per capita society.
Reaching this level by 2050 implies reducing primary energy
use from 1200 to 460 PJ per year, despite a projected 65%
economic expansion.

Embedded machine learning-based road conditions and driving behavior monitoringIJECEIAES
Car accident rates have increased in recent years, resulting in losses in human lives, properties, and other financial costs. An embedded machine learning-based system is developed to address this critical issue. The system can monitor road conditions, detect driving patterns, and identify aggressive driving behaviors. The system is based on neural networks trained on a comprehensive dataset of driving events, driving styles, and road conditions. The system effectively detects potential risks and helps mitigate the frequency and impact of accidents. The primary goal is to ensure the safety of drivers and vehicles. Collecting data involved gathering information on three key road events: normal street and normal drive, speed bumps, circular yellow speed bumps, and three aggressive driving actions: sudden start, sudden stop, and sudden entry. The gathered data is processed and analyzed using a machine learning system designed for limited power and memory devices. The developed system resulted in 91.9% accuracy, 93.6% precision, and 92% recall. The achieved inference time on an Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense with a 32-bit CPU running at 64 MHz is 34 ms and requires 2.6 kB peak RAM and 139.9 kB program flash memory, making it suitable for resource-constrained embedded systems.
A review on techniques and modelling methodologies used for checking electrom...nooriasukmaningtyas
The proper function of the integrated circuit (IC) in an inhibiting electromagnetic environment has always been a serious concern throughout the decades of revolution in the world of electronics, from disjunct devices to today’s integrated circuit technology, where billions of transistors are combined on a single chip. The automotive industry and smart vehicles in particular, are confronting design issues such as being prone to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Electronic control devices calculate incorrect outputs because of EMI and sensors give misleading values which can prove fatal in case of automotives. In this paper, the authors have non exhaustively tried to review research work concerned with the investigation of EMI in ICs and prediction of this EMI using various modelling methodologies and measurement setups.

Low power architecture of logic gates using adiabatic techniquesnooriasukmaningtyas
The growing significance of portable systems to limit power consumption in ultra-large-scale-integration chips of very high density, has recently led to rapid and inventive progresses in low-power design. The most effective technique is adiabatic logic circuit design in energy-efficient hardware. This paper presents two adiabatic approaches for the design of low power circuits, modified positive feedback adiabatic logic (modified PFAL) and the other is direct current diode based positive feedback adiabatic logic (DC-DB PFAL). Logic gates are the preliminary components in any digital circuit design. By improving the performance of basic gates, one can improvise the whole system performance. In this paper proposed circuit design of the low power architecture of OR/NOR, AND/NAND, and XOR/XNOR gates are presented using the said approaches and their results are analyzed for powerdissipation, delay, power-delay-product and rise time and compared with the other adiabatic techniques along with the conventional complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) designs reported in the literature. It has been found that the designs with DC-DB PFAL technique outperform with the percentage improvement of 65% for NOR gate and 7% for NAND gate and 34% for XNOR gate over the modified PFAL techniques at 10 MHz respectively.

DEEP LEARNING FOR SMART GRID INTRUSION DETECTION: A HYBRID CNN-LSTM-BASED MODELgerogepatton
As digital technology becomes more deeply embedded in power systems, protecting the communication
networks of Smart Grids (SG) has emerged as a critical concern. Distributed Network Protocol 3 (DNP3)
represents a multi-tiered application layer protocol extensively utilized in Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition (SCADA)-based smart grids to facilitate real-time data gathering and control functionalities.
Robust Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) are necessary for early threat detection and mitigation because
of the interconnection of these networks, which makes them vulnerable to a variety of cyberattacks. To
solve this issue, this paper develops a hybrid Deep Learning (DL) model specifically designed for intrusion
detection in smart grids. The proposed approach is a combination of the Convolutional Neural Network
(CNN) and the Long-Short-Term Memory algorithms (LSTM). We employed a recent intrusion detection
dataset (DNP3), which focuses on unauthorized commands and Denial of Service (DoS) cyberattacks, to
train and test our model. The results of our experiments show that our CNN-LSTM method is much better
at finding smart grid intrusions than other deep learning algorithms used for classification. In addition,
our proposed approach improves accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score, achieving a high detection
accuracy rate of 99.50%.
