Addressing this challenge, a new generation of science journals employs video online to provide a systematic visualized publication of experimental studies. Visualization through video greatly facilitates the understanding and learning of experimental procedures enhancing knowledge transfer and productivity in research and education. The video-based publication in the rigorous academic format requires a new set of concepts and technical approaches to production, publication and dissemination processes. As the publisher of Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE), the first video journal for biological sciences indexed in MEDLINE and PubMed, I would like to provide an overview of the growing field of video publication and discuss its technical challenges, implications for scholarly communication and acceptance in the academic and library community.

Cell culture is the process of growing cells outside their natural environment. Key events in the history of cell culture include Wilhelm Roux maintaining chicken tissue in saline in 1885, and Harrison establishing the first cell culture in 1907. Traditionally, cells were cultured in 2D monolayers, but 3D cell culture has emerged as a way to better mimic the in vivo microenvironment. 3D cultures can be scaffold-based, using matrices like collagen, or scaffold-free, allowing cell-cell interactions. Technologies like microfluidics and bio-MEMS now aid 3D cell culture research. Careful planning is required to properly design and safely operate a cell culture laboratory.

Bioprinting uses 3D printers to construct tissue by depositing layers of living cells, biomaterials, and growth factors to build living structures. It represents an advance beyond simply seeding cells onto scaffolds by incorporating temporal aspects of tissue development. The first workshop on bioprinting discussed the state of the art, including conceptual bioprinters, successes printing simple tissues, and promising preclinical studies of more complex organs, but developing techniques to print fully functional replacement tissues and organs remains a challenge. Bioprinting holds promise for applications in transplantation, regenerative medicine, and treatment of injuries.

After several years of postdoctoral research, she transitioned to her current role as Biobank Manager, where she oversees the storage, processing, and distribution of human biospecimens for medical research.
