Enabling the Exchange and use of Data in Agriculture
1. Enabling the exchange and
use of data in agriculture
Imma Subirats
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
Scholarly Communication and Research Infrastructure Workshop – July 5, 2017
Liber Annual Conference, Patras (Greece)
2. Office for Partnerships, Advocacy and Capacity
Development (OPC)
Responsible for providing corporate strategic advice and developing the
tools and methodologies and long-term vision that will allow FAO
to proactively engage in partnerships, advocate its messages and
develop capacities in all areas comprised in the Organization’s
five Strategic Objectives
4. F(indable) - A(ccessible) – R(e-usable)
• Predominantly institutional policies, using disciplinary or
multidisciplinary repositories
• Specialized networks bring data together, like
• Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project
(AgMIP) (Crop growth models)
• Global Yield Gap and Water Productivity Atlas (GYGA)
• Use of IDs
• International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture
(TPGRFA)
5. I(nteroperable)
Research Data Alliance (RDA)
Interest Group on Agricultural
Data (IGAD)
Formed in 2013, IGAD has
grown in community strength
to over 150 members,
becoming one of the RDA’s
most prominent Thematic
Groups
https://www.rd-alliance.org/groups/agriculture-data-interest-group-igad.html
6. IGAD/RDA Activities
Multi-faceted approach, splintering into specific Working Groups (WG)
each with their own tangible goals
• Wheat Data Interoperability WG
• Rice Data Interoperability WG
• Agrisemantics WG
• Soil Data WG
• Ongoing discussions to start WGs on On-farm data sharing, Capacity
development, Climate/Weather Data, Metrics and indicators in agricultural
science
Next Meeting Montreal
17 to 18 September 2017
9. AgriSemantics WG
The goal is to gather community-based requirements and use cases for an
infrastructure that supports appropriate use of semantics for data interoperability,
with special focus on agriculture.
The outputs of the WG will be:
• A report on semantics landscape for agricultural data
• A set of use cases and requirements
• A document on recommendations for the future of semantics for agricultural
data - software, functionalities, semantic assets to enhance data
interoperability in agriculture.
12. I(nteroperable)
Global map of existing
vocabularies for the exchange
of data in the field of food and
agriculture.

The Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) is a major international collaborative effort to improve the state of agricultural simulation and to understand climate impacts on the agricultural sector at global and regional scales.
GYGA is an international project requiring collaboration among agronomists with knowledge of production systems, soils, and climate governing crop performance in their countries. A standard protocol for assessing yield potential (Yp), water-limited yield potential (Yw), yield gaps (Yg) and water productivity (WP) is applied for all crops and countries based on best available data, robust crop simulation models, and a bottom-up approach to upscale results from location to region and country.
