SpringOne Platform 2016 Speaker: Cornelia Davis; Sr. Director of Technology, Pivotal. While “cf push” is the center of it all, there are many more things that various individuals can do with the Cloud Foundry platform. They can monitor, scale and upgrade those deployed apps. And also deploy, monitor, scale and upgrade the platform itself. Further, to operationalize the platform in an enterprise there are quotas, security groups, route services, environment variable groups and many other “knobs” that may also be tuned, and there are various roles and permission structures to govern these. In this session Cornelia will take a holistic view of the Cloud Foundry “control plane” and map the key functions to IT roles (perhaps with some redefinition), and she’ll show which entitlements allow which configurations. Ultimately the goal is to understand how Cloud Foundry can be effectively used to optimize the development and operations (Devops) in your organization. Participants will leave with a concrete framework for transforming current IT practices, roles and responsibilities using the Cloud Foundry platform.

Declarative Infrastructure with Cloud Foundry BOSH

Initially built to deploy and manage the Cloud Foundry “Elastic Runtime”, the platform that allows application developers and operators to easily deploy and manage applications and services through the entire app lifecycle (including production!), Cloud Foundry BOSH is a system that manages any virtual machine clusters of arbitrarily complex, distributed systems. You define your release through packages (what gets installed on the VMs), jobs (what is run on the VMs) and a deployment manifest (declaration of the cluster) and BOSH will first deploy and then continue to maintain your cluster to match that desired state. The result is a self-healing, eventually consistent system that markedly reduces the operational burdens and supports a great number of other Devops functions such as canary, zero-downtime upgrades, autoscaling, built in high availability and more. In this session we’ll show you how to create, deploy and manage a BOSH release, and we’ll watch what BOSH does when bad things happen.

A Platform as a Service (PaaS) such as Pivotal CF, built on the open-source Cloud Foundry, presents a set of abstractions and capabilities that focus on the application implementation and the run-time services it will leverage. The value of a PaaS installation is equally driven by the set of application-centric capabilities provided, such as performance monitoring or logging, and by the set of services that can easily be integrated into an application; exposing the offerings in the vCloud Automation Center services catalog for leverage by apps deployed into Pivotal CF allows an enterprise faster time to value. At this joint NYC Cloud Foundry and NY PHP meetup, we'll discuss the shift to Platform-as-a-Service and what it means for PHP development on the cloud. First, we'll take a look at the "traditional" cloud Infrastructure-as-a-Service (virtual servers and disks) model and describe how Platform-as-a-Service builds upon it to provide the runtimes and data services for hosting PHP applications. We'll then demonstrate how a PHP developer can use buildpacks and services within a Cloud Foundry PaaS to deploy scalable and resilient apps to his or her cloud of choice. Along the way we'll compare the variety of buildpacks available to PHP developers, show techniques for binding to services, and highlight best practices for creating born-on-the-cloud apps based on a microservices architecture. Developing an application to a cloud platform involves working with deployed application's environment and connecting to services. Spring Cloud, a new project, simplifies these tasks in a variety of cloud platforms including Cloud Foundry and Heroku. Spring Cloud makes it possible to deploy the same artifact (a war or a jar) to multiple cloud environments. It supports multiple clouds through the concept of Cloud Connector and provides out of the box implementation for Cloud Foundry and Heroku. Spring Cloud is designed for extension, making it simple to create a cloud connector for other cloud platforms. Spring Cloud also supports connecting to multiple services through the concept of service connectors. Out of the box, it provides support for many common services, but also makes it easy to extend it to other services. While Spring Cloud can be used by applications using any JVM language and framework, it further simplifies Spring applications through Java and XML-based configuration. In this talk, we will introduce the Spring Cloud project, show how you can simplify configuring applications for cloud deployment, discuss its extensibility mechanism, and put it to good use by showing practical examples from the field.

Automated infrastructure allows us to move fast, but moving fast is scary without proper testing. Where to start though? The state of the art in Chef cookbook testing has changed rapidly in the last few years with the introduction of new and improved tools and much of what you’ll find in web searches is often outdated. In this presentation I’ll give an overview of the available tools for testing and techniques to avoid busy work in your testing. We’ll cover cookbook linting, unit testing, and integration testing using Cookstyle, ChefSpec, and Test Kitchen / InSpec. We’ll also cover wiring up your testing in Travis CI to perform full integration tests on every PR.

My talk at Data Science Labs conference in Odessa. Training a model in Apache Spark while having it automatically available for real-time serving is an essential feature for end-to-end solutions. There is an option to export the model into PMML and then import it into a separated scoring engine. The idea of interoperability is great but it has multiple challenges, such as code duplication, limited extensibility, inconsistency, extra moving parts. In this talk we discussed an alternative solution that does not introduce custom model formats and new standards, not based on export/import workflow and shares Apache Spark API.

This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
