You have heard and seen great things about Spring Cloud and you decide it is time to dive in and try it out yourself. You fire up your browser head to Google and land on the Spring Cloud homepage. Then it hits you, where do you begin? What do each of these projects do? Do you need to use all of them or can you be selective? The number of projects under the Spring Cloud umbrella has grown immensely over the past couple of years and if you are a newcomer to the Spring Cloud ecosystem it can be quite daunting to sift through the projects to find what you need. By the end of this talk you will leave with a solid understanding of the Spring Cloud projects, how to use them to build cloud native apps, and the confidence to get started!

Nowadays enterprises as well as startups are looking to build their software applications leveraging Cloud Platforms so that they can greatly reduce their go to market time and infrastructure setup costs. However, Cloud Native Applications (NCA) should be designed with cloud computing architecture in mind which involves thinking about dynamic provisioning of resources, service downtimes, data redundancy etc. Spring Boot provides a robust platform for building microservices and Spring Cloud provides the capabilities to build Cloud Native Applications by abstracting the low level details. In this talk, we will learn how to develop Cloud Native Applications using Spring Boot and Spring Cloud frameworks.

As presented at: http://www.meetup.com/Pivotal-Open-Source-Hub/events/219264521/
With the advent of microservice and cloud-native application architectures, building distributed systems is becoming increasingly common for the enterprise Java developer. Fortunately many of the innovators in the space, including Twitter, LinkedIn, and Netflix, have embraced the JVM as they’ve built increasingly complex systems, with Netflix open-sourcing much of its toolkit for constructing these systems at NetflixOSS.
Spring Cloud provides tools for developers to quickly build some of the common patterns in distributed systems. Many of these patterns are provided via wrapping the battle-tested components found at NetflixOSS.

In today’s cloud native world, Docker Images are the lingua franca for platform portability. Unfortunately, there’s no clear direction for developers to turn their Spring applications into those Docker Images. The most likely tool for Docker Image creation, Dockerfile, has serious Day 2 limitations that make it a poor choice for many situations. This session will explore how to use the Cloud Native Buildpacks (CNCF) project and its integrations into the Spring ecosystem. It will cover the use of Spring Boot’s Maven and Gradle plugins, the pack CLI, the kpack Kubernetes service, and more.

Software development is changing rapidly. Enterprises that want to capture value faster, have to deliver value faster. The way to do that is by delivering software in production fast. Think multiple x a day. How do you transform to a digital enterprise that enables that?
Cloud-Native Operations with Kubernetes and CI/CDVMware Tanzu
Operations practices have historically lagged behind development. Agile and Extreme Programming have become common practice for development teams. In the last decade, the DevOps and SRE movements have brought these concepts to operations, borrowing heavily from Lean principles such as Kanban and Value Stream Mapping. So, how does all of this play out if we’re using Kubernetes?
In this class, Paul Czarkowski, Principal Technologist at Pivotal, will explain how Kubernetes enables a new cloud-native way of operating software. Attend to learn:
● what cloud-native operations are;
● how to build a cloud-native CI/CD stack; and
● how to deploy and upgrade an application from source to production on Kubernetes.

Speakers: Priya Shivakumar, Director of Product, Confluent + Konstantine Karantasis, Software Engineer, Confluent + Rohit Pujari, Partner Solutions Architect, AWS
Most companies start their cloud journey with a new use case, or a new application. Sometimes these applications can run independently in the cloud, but often times they need data from the on premises datacenter. Existing applications will slowly migrate, but will need a strategy and the technology to enable a multi-year migration.
In this session, we will share how companies around the world are using Confluent Cloud, a fully managed Apache Kafka service, to migrate to AWS. By implementing a central-pipeline architecture using Apache Kafka to sync on-prem and cloud deployments, companies can accelerate migration times and reduce costs.
In this online talk we will cover:
•How to take the first step in migrating to AWS
•How to reliably sync your on premises applications using a persistent bridge to cloud
•Learn how Confluent Cloud can make this daunting task simple, reliable and performant
•See a demo of the hybrid-cloud and multi-region deployment of Apache Kafka

GIDS 2019: Developing Apps with Containers, Functions and Cloud ServicesPatrick Chanezon
Cloud native applications are increasingly composed of containers, serverless functions responding to events and managed cloud services. What is the best workflow and set of tools to provide a rapid, iterative development experience and to package applications using these three components?
This hand-on talk will compare and contrast several sets of tools and their associated workflows:
Using Docker Desktop, with its local Docker engine and Kubernetes cluster, with open source tools such as the Virtual Kubelet, or the Gloo hybrid app gateway, to build the most productive development inner-loop for these type of applications
OpenFaaS, Fn, or Nuclio open source serverless framework to run functions in containers locally
Telepresence to run a container locally, connected to a remote cluster
Helm and Draft
Knative
The talk will also cover how you can use the Cloud Native Application Bundle (CNAB) format and tools to package your applications and share them using a container registry.

Zero to 1000+ Applications - Large Scale CD Adoption at Cisco with Spinnaker ...DevOps.com
As part of its Cloud-native transformation, Cisco needed to modernize its software delivery process. Scalability, multi-cloud deployment to its OpenShift environment and public clouds, and the ability to support Cisco’s extensive policy, compliance, and security requirements made open source Spinnaker a logical choice for a modern continuous delivery platform.
As one of the world’s top technology providers with one of the largest and most diverse software development organizations, Cisco had to overcome some unique challenges to be able to onboard 10,000+ developers, 1000+ monolithic and non-cloud native applications, and achieve the high availability and reliability needed to support mission-critical production applications.
Join us for this new webinar as Balaji Siva, VP of Products at OpsMx engages Anil Anaberumutt, IT architect at Cisco, and Red Hat Sr. Solutions Architect, Vikas Grover, in a discussion about Cisco’s CD challenges and the lessons learned, best practices implemented, and key results achieved on their CD transformation journey from zero to over 1000 applications.

7 February 2018
The Kubernetes cloud native landscape is vast. Delivering a solution requires managing a puzzling array of required tooling, monitoring, disaster recovery, and other solutions that lie outside the realm of the central cluster. The governing body of Kubernetes, the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, has developed guidance for organizations interested in this topic by publishing the Cloud Native Landscape, but while a list of options is helpful it does not give operations and DevOps professionals the knowledge they need to execute.
Learn best practices of setting up and managing the tools needed around Kubernetes. This presentation covers popular open source options (to avoid lock in) and how one can implement and manage these tools on an ongoing basis. Learn from, and do not repeat, the mistakes of previous centralized platforms.
In this session, attendees will learn:
1. Cloud Native Landscape 101 - Prometheus, Sysdig, NGINX, and more. Where do they all fit in Kubernetes solution?
2. Avoiding the OpenStack sprawl of managing a multiverse of required tooling in the Kubernetes world.
3. Leverage technology like Kubernetes, now available on DC/OS, to provide part of the infrastructure framework that helps manage cloud native application patterns.

Understanding Globus Data Transfers with NetSageGlobus
NetSage is an open privacy-aware network measurement, analysis, and visualization service designed to help end-users visualize and reason about large data transfers. NetSage traditionally has used a combination of passive measurements, including SNMP and flow data, as well as active measurements, mainly perfSONAR, to provide longitudinal network performance data visualization. It has been deployed by dozens of networks world wide, and is supported domestically by the Engagement and Performance Operations Center (EPOC), NSF #2328479. We have recently expanded the NetSage data sources to include logs for Globus data transfers, following the same privacy-preserving approach as for Flow data. Using the logs for the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) as an example, this talk will walk through several different example use cases that NetSage can answer, including: Who is using Globus to share data with my institution, and what kind of performance are they able to achieve? How many transfers has Globus supported for us? Which sites are we sharing the most data with, and how is that changing over time? How is my site using Globus to move data internally, and what kind of performance do we see for those transfers? What percentage of data transfers at my institution used Globus, and how did the overall data transfer performance compare to the Globus users?
First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.
