Ready for Work: 7 Ways to Better Prepare Millennials for WorkBentley University
How can we better prepare millennials for the workforce? The U.S. unemployment rate for people aged 20 to 24 is nearly twice that of those aged 25 to 34, according to the bureau of labor statistics. While there’s been plenty of talk about the challenges millennials face as they enter the workforce, there’s been less discussion of how to actually fix the problem. In an attempt to move this conversation forward, Bentley University asked leaders in higher education and business how they would solve it. The outcome of those conversations, supported by survey research conducted by Bentley and KRC Research, is Bentley’s “Ready for Work: 7 Ways to Better Prepare Millennials for the Workplace.”

The Bentley University PreparedU Project features a comprehensive Preparedness Survey that uncovers the “why, what, and how” behind the millennial generation’s challenges in the 21st century workplace. The survey results serve as a springboard for a wide-ranging conversation and a call to action for stakeholders to find innovative ways to prepare millennials for career success and a fulfilling life.
To learn more about the survey’s initial findings, visit Bentley.edu/Prepared.
A key area covered in the study is perceptions of the career preparedness of millennial women compared to millennial men. The survey results present a striking challenge: While respondents see women as better prepared for their first jobs after graduating from college, respondents give men the advantage when it comes to the likelihood of overall career success.

Inside TorrentLocker (Cryptolocker) Malware C&C Server Davide Cioccia
CryptoLocker was a ransomware trojan which targeted computers running Microsoft Windows and was first observed by Dell SecureWorks in September 2013. CryptoLocker propagated via infected email attachments, and via an existing botnet; when activated, the malware encrypts certain types of files stored on local and mounted network drives using RSA public-key cryptography, with the private key stored only on the malware's control servers. The malware then displays a message, which offers to decrypt the data if a payment (through either Bitcoin or a pre-paid cash voucher) is made by a stated deadline, and threatened to delete the private key if the deadline passes. If the deadline is not met, the malware offered to decrypt data via an online service provided by the malware's operators, for a significantly higher price in Bitcoin

1.)Describe the changes that you believe colleges will need to make over the next 3-7 years to adapt to the following groups in order to be effective in facilitating emotional, physical, intellectual, social, and spiritual development: Homelanders, Millenial students, and Adult learners. In the next few years colleges will need to change to the learning styles of new generations such as Homelanders, Millenial students, and adult learners. Virtual assistants, flipped classrooms and the quantified self are three of the six technological developments that will have a significant impact on higher education within the next five years. Instructors have presented information by lecture since Socrates to the benefit only of linguistic learners. If you're visual or hands-on you've been teacher disabled. Helping students learn according to their learning styles and multiple intelligence preference is finally becoming accepted as an instructional strategy. Many students naturally learn how to learn when they realize they learn better from one resource or strategy over another. For many learners, this concept is too refined or it flies in the face of the teacher authority. Young children like to learn with hands-on methods, but the system quickly moves them to learn by listening. Parents try to help by pointing to smart students and suggesting that their offspring emulate the learning strategies that work for others. Following the path set by others won't work. In fact, we all learn differently. It's a wise parent and facilitative instructor who realizes this and helps the student identify their strategies to meet it. As we work extensively in technology, we see that learners now have access to a variety of instructional strategies. In many cases, the learner selects the path to the strategy. The search for knowledge becomes the learner's intrinsic reward, rather than an extrinsic reward provided by external authority. This may make the learner more motivated because they find it easier to learn. Research in learning technologies may eventually show us that students learn more quickly and deeply so that they apply the information and solve problems. A school can be in the worst neighborhood, but a satellite dish on the roof and fast Internet access on ten classroom computers, positively impacts learning. It could be that we're saving generations of children. Many learning style models exist; my favorite is Albert Canfield's. It has a strong research base, uses clear language, reports in percentiles, and helps stude.
Redefining Workplace Learning For The 21st CenturyBy Jenny Dearb.docxsodhi3
Redefining Workplace Learning For The 21st Century
By Jenny Dearborn, Vice President, Chief Learning Officer, SuccessFactors – an SAP company
Forbes, October 2013
Disruptive technologies and shifting demographics are redefining the workforce. In response, smart companies are reinventing workplace learning in an effort to make their programs more relevant and effective, and to create a culture that encourages continuous learning and develops innovative leaders at all levels of the organization.
“Today, workplace learning has achieved mission-critical status,” says Sam Herring, CEO of Intrepid Learning. “Global CEOs face an environment that is more competitive than ever—one in which they live or die by their ability to lead innovation, which can only be realized by having world-class talent that is highly competent, motivated and engaged. Top companies understand this connection, and they know that success requires more than waging a war to acquire talent; it requires that they strategically develop the talent they need to envision and execute the business strategies that will make them successful in the future.”
Get out of the classroom
For most of the last century, workplace learning had a familiar look and feel: students sat in rows taking notes as an expert stood at the front of the room and dispensed information. Technology offered new ways to communicate and learn, but all too often technology-based learning programs turned out to be little more than upgraded versions of the same traditional K-12 model.
Today, that is changing rapidly. New advances in mobile devices and cloud technology, a deeper understanding of neuroscience and how humans learn best, and the emergence of the millennial workforce—the tech-savvy generation that is the largest in U.S. history—is creating a growing demand for more innovative and informal approaches to workplace learning.
“Employees no longer see their careers as the function of a single organization, but as the culmination of a purposeful set of development experiences they own themselves,” says Mary Slaughter, senior vice president and chief talent officer at Sun Trust. “When you combine their motivations with ubiquitous, on-demand access to skills and knowledge, and the unrelenting pressure to increase workplace productivity, it’s fruitless to maintain traditional, static learning architectures.”
How workplace learning is changing
In the very near future, workplace learning will be about social collaboration, team-based activities, and decentralized peer-to-peer learning. Learning will be mobile, and access will be continuous and instantaneous. Workers will attend fewer scheduled classes and online training sessions. Instead, short videos, game-like simulations, and peer communities that offer networking, information sharing and informal coaching will engage and motivate workers by delivering “anyplace, anytime learning.”
In the future, workplace learning will be increasingly experiential and relationsh ...
Academic excellence vs. professional excellenceAbhipsha Mishra
Most students who excel in their academics don’t necessarily excel in their profession. For example; most CEOs are not necessarily toppers from the best B-schools. Why most often academic excellence does not translate into professional excellence? Where is the gap? Is it in the curriculum, system, corporate set up or somewhere else? How can we bridge the gap?

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

8. Insights:
The soft skills of professionalism, executive functioning and general
people skills are the things that either make the transition from school to
work a smooth process or a rough one.
Some students are ready for the transition, others, not so much. The ones
who are ready can fit into the culture of the work environment.
Personal responsibility and accountability are among the most important
things that will help young people succeed on the job.
Students need to fit the culture even more than they need to fit the skills.
Skills can be easily learned. Cultural shifts are much harder.
Three things always lead to a successful transition:
Find ways to create touchpoints that show students what is real about the
professional training they are getting in school. How do we get them to
take that training seriously?
Internships are not enough - we need more and varied touchpoints that
bring business and education together.

Issue:
The connection and

institutions) needs to be stronger.
