Understanding Challenges of Curriculum Innovation and the Implementation_John...John Yeo
Singapore’s education system has remained consistently near the top of most education ranking systems over the past decade. OECD (2010) attributes the success to a systemic focus on curriculum innovation by Singapore schools. However, the challenges that emerge from the various initiatives are complex and multifaceted. Using the lens of Schwab’s (1973) four commonplaces- milieu, learner, subject matter and teacher, the experienced curriculum is unpacked to reveal the discourse of the challenges of curriculum translation. While I examine the similarities and differences in curriculum translation under two different educational philosophies- curriculum vs didatik, I attend to the educational outcomes of teaching practices using the Appreciative Inquiry approach. The challenges than unmask the inherent tensions between socio-economical ideologies with the curriculum implementation at the programmatic and institutional level. Exploring from Engestrom's Activity Theory, I will examine the issues of ideology and control surrounding what gets eventually translated in the classroom curriculum.

Re-Thinking on Critical and Inventive Thinking_JohnYeo SingaporeJohn Yeo
Curriculum gap due to lost in translation highlights critical disjoint in assessment of creativity- 'where is the imagination'. Grounded on practical challenges of implementation coupled with the lack of press to support fostering of imagination, students are often crippled or even discouraged to break out of the box. Solutions proposed often lack the disruptive or thirst for greater novelty. An impt aspect of how we can re-think assessing creativity with helping students to better appreciate standards we expect and challenge them to push for new ideas or challenge status quo.
The author advocates the use of Lesson Study for Learning Communities to encourage teachers to dive deep into assessing students' authentic ideas as a key driver to enhance intellectual quality of learning.
Paper on Authentic Assessment of Creativity and Change Leadership. Unpacking of the cognitive and affective domains of creative problem solving process based on the thinking skills model, the mapping to how we design, implement and assess 21st century competencies may path new thinking in the way we envision learning.
Creative Problem Solving w Emergenetics ReflectionsJohn Yeo
A compilation of how Creative Problem Solving is best designed for teachers to experience their own journey of facilitating for creativity in the classroom with different thinking tools to enhance Creativity. Emergenetics was the chosen profiling instrument to help teachers themselves situate their own understanding and behaviour of what creativity meant to them. They first experience how their energy generated for the 7 thinking and behavioural attributes (i.e. Social, Conceptual, Analytical, Structural, Expressiveness, Assertiveness, Flexibility) allow them to value what is creative. Thereafter the participants are grouped based on the Emergenetics concept of Whole Emergenetics (WE) team to harness different perspectives and values to design for a truly innovative process of teaching and learning. This professional learning course is designed by John Yeo, National Institute of Education, Singapore.
This workshop has been specially designed to teach Creativity and teach creatively, using a Yo-Yo. A father of two, John gets bundles of inspiration by simply enjoying the creative process of imagination and invention with them. For this hands-on interactive session, how would you like to:
• Discover how you can enjoy learning about creativity by being \'play-full\'
• Get the best out of your students\' imagination
• Invite your students to become coachable by toying with a yo-yo.
The book applies Dr. Browning’s extensive research on brain-based science, psychometric assessments, learning and organizational development to provide a clear resource for self-awareness and understanding and a knowledge base to relate to others in work, home and daily life. The Emergenetics framework pinpoints the complex interaction of our genetics and life experiences in an easy-to-understand format that is relatable and applicable across situation, profession and culture.
Having left the theatre scene since 2001, Family*Door is my most difficult yet satisfying creative production. Months of conceptualizing, scripting, directing all rolled into this beautiful masterpiece of the modern day Prodigal Son: non-traditional mime infused with elements of multimedia.
