This document defines and describes the elements and principles of art. The elements of art are color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value - the visual components that make up a work of art. The principles of art are balance, emphasis, movement, proportion, rhythm, unity, and variety - the techniques artists use to organize the elements. Each element and principle is then defined in 1-2 sentences.
Principles of ART
The principles of Art describe the ways that artists use the elements of art in a work of art.
Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable. In symmetrical balance, the elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side; in asymmetrical balance, the sides are different but still look balanced. In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar.
Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.
Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing. To keep rhythm exciting and active, variety is essential.
Variety is the use of several elements of design to hold the viewer’s attention and to guide the viewer’s eye through and around the work of art.
Harmony in art is the visually satisfying effect of combining similar, related elements. For instance: adjacent colors on the color wheel, similar shapes etc.
Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through the work of art, often to focal areas. Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the work of art. Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art.
Repetition is working with patterns to make the work of art seem active. The repetition of elements of design creates unity within the work of art.
Proportion is the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts, or number) relate well with each other. When drawing the human figure, proportion can refer to the size of the head compared to the rest of the body.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

height, width, and depth. Form may also be free flowing.
8. VALUE
- the lightness and darkness of tone color. White is the
lightest value; black is the darkest. The value halfway
between this extremes id called middle gray
9. SPACE
- an element of art by which positive and negative
areas are defined or a sense of depth achieved in a work
of art.
10. COLOR
-an element of art made up of three properties: hue,
value, and intensity.
11. TEXTURE
-an element of art refers to the way things feel, or
look as if they might feel if touch.
13. RHYTHM
-a principle of design that indicates movement, created by the
careful placement of repeated elements in a work of art to
cause a visual tempo or beat.
14. BALANCE
- a way of combining elements to add a feeling of
equilibrium or stability to a work of art.
15. EMPHASIS
- a way of combining elements to stress the differences
between those elements.
16. PROPORTION
- a principle of design that refers to the relationship of
certain elements to the whole and each other.

- a way of combining elements by using a series of
gradual changes in those elements.
18. HARMONY
- a way of combining similar elements in an art work to
accent their similarities
19. VARIETY
- a principle of design concerned with diversity or
contrast. Varity is achieved by using different shapes,
size and or colors in a work of art.
20. MOVEMENT
- a principle of design used to create the look and
feeling of action and to guide the viewer’s eye
throughout the work of art.
