- It is a vertebrate
animal that lives out
of water but always
near it- besides lakes
and ponds.
Head
- This is directly
attached to the body.
The frog has no neck.
Eyes
- Bulging eyes make it easy
to see in every direction,
even when partially
submerged.
Three eyelids protect and
maintain moisture in the
Ear
- A frog has tympanic
membrane on each
side of its head
instead of a true ear.
Nostril
- Located near the top
of the frog’s head,
nostrils enable the frog
to breathe while
almost completely
submerged.
M outh
-a wide mouth runs
across the whole face of
the frog. A long sticky
tongue sits inside
waiting to lash out at
flying insects.
Body
-It is covered with
wet skin and
without the
presence of hair.
Forelegs
-These are shorter than
the hind legs and
designed mainly for
balanced and to help fush
food into the frog’s
mouth.
Hind legs
-These strong muscular
legs enable the frog to
leap over large distance.
Toes
-There are 4 clawless
toes on each front leg
and five webbed toes
on each hind leg, the
latter are helpful in
swimming.
The body excluding the head and
neck and limbs. "they moved
their arms and legs and bodies"
What does torso mean on
a frog?
Covered with scales or
bony plates, live in salt or
fresh water, breathe
through gills and use fins
to swim.
HEAD
- Attached to the body, no
neck, contains eyes,
mouth and nostrils
EYES
- No eyelids,
movable,
usually large.
Most fish are
short sighted.
NOSTRIL
- Found at the
upper part of
the mouth. The
fish uses it for
smelling not for
breathing.
MOUTH
- Different shape and
size depending on
type of fish.
Carnivorous fish
have teeth.
GILLS
- External organs of
respiration for the fish.
After taking in water
through the mouth,
oxygen is removed and
the rest expelled through
the gills.
FINS
- Fins protrude from the
body and tail of a fish. The
ribbed supports for the fins
are made of cartilage
which allows flexibility.
PECTORAL FIN
-These are behind the gill
openings on either side of
the fish and aid in steering
and maneuverability.
PELVIC FIN
-They are used for
reverse motion.
D O R S A L FIN
- Located along the
upper back, from one to
several fins provide
stability of the fish,
keeping it upright. They
may contain spines for
defense.
CAUDAL FIN
-The “tail” fin is the fish’s
main source of strength for
forward motion.
ANAL
-Behind the anus,
this fins helps with
balance and keeps
the fish upright when
turning quickly.
SCALES
-only some fish have
scales. They may
overlap like shingles or
just be very close
beside each other.
LATERAL LINE
-This line along the side
of the fish helps it to
detect vibrations
through the water and
any change in
pressure.
