Electrolytes in solution can be either strong or weak. Strong electrolytes completely dissociate into ions, while weak electrolytes only partially dissociate into ions and remain in equilibrium. Non-electrolytes do not form recognizable ions in solution. Polar compounds that contain oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine or fluorine atoms are typically soluble, while nonpolar compounds are usually not soluble.
