Physical properties describe matter without changing its chemical composition and include intensive properties like density and melting point as well as extensive properties like volume that depend on amount. A change of state through heating or cooling involves physical changes but not chemical composition, as with water changing between ice, liquid, and vapor. Chemical properties relate to how a substance reacts and changes composition through chemical reactions to form new substances with different chemical and physical properties.
