Is it costly to operate an EV over a period as
compared to an ICE vehicle?
• An EV has a higher upfront cost of procurement as compared to its
ICE counterpart. However, the cost of charging, maintaining and
operating an EV is lower than the ICE vehicle
18-06-2021 14
• For example: Tata Tigor and Tata Tigor EV has been considered for
calculation.
Tata Tigor (ICE) has a claimed range of approximately 20 kms per litre.
Assuming, a running of 100 kms, it would consume around 5 litres of
petrol.
Assuming the cost of petrol of INR 86.95 per litre, as of 08 Feb 2021.
Hence, the cost of travelling 100 kms is INR 434.75.
Tata Tigor (EV), with a total battery capacity of 21.5 kWh, the total cost
of charging the EV would be 21.5 kWh x INR 7 per kWh
(Assuming EV home charging tariff ), i.e. around INR 150. Hence it is
economical to operate an EV than ICE vehicle.
18-06-2021 15
Are EVs safe?
• All EV batteries go through rigorous testing procedures at National
Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL)
certified labs.
• Certification agencies in India like ARAI, ICAT certify EV and Chargers.
Thus, it is safe to drive an EV.
18-06-2021 16
Benefits of choosing an Electric Vehicle (EV) over
Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Vehicle
1. Economical
2. Improved Air quality
3. Convenience
4. Other Benefits
5. Comfortably charge at home
6. Upfront incentives from Government to EV owners
7. Incentive for scrapping ICE vehicles
8. EV owners can claim income tax deduction up to Rs 150,000 under
Section 80EEB
9. Reduced dependence of imported fossil fuel for the Country
18-06-2021 17
Electric Vehicle Misconception
1. Transport sector is not a major contributor to emissions
2. EVs take too long to charge
3. EVs are costly
4. EVs have Low Range
5. EVs are not safe
6. EVs have Low Speed
7. EV batteries need to be replaced frequently
8. There are not enough EV charging stations
18-06-2021 18
Government Initiatives for EV
• Electric Vehicle Nation by 2030
• NEMMP
• FAME
• MEVP-2018
• Policy target
1) Increase no. of EV registration
2) Generate investment
3) Create jobs
18-06-2021 19
MEVP-2018
• Incentives for Manufacturing of EV
• Incentives & assistance for EV Charging
• Incentives & provisions for EV Buyer
1. Incentives for only Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)
2. Initially Government of Maharashtra to promote EV in public transport in six cities
ie :- Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad, Thane, Nagpur and Nashik
3. 10% subsidy for passenger buses registered in the State to private/public bus
transport buyer, on base price (maximum limit of Rs. 20 lacs per vehicle)
4. 15% subsidy to private car/transport (maximum limit of Rs.5,000 for 2 wheeler, Rs.
12,000 for 3 wheeler, and Rs 1 lac for 4 wheeler)

Industries Facing shortage of Skilled EV
Engineers
Electric vehicle makers face shortage of engineers: Sep-2018, ET-India Times
• “Hiring talent for EV is a very big challenge” Mahindra and Mahindra.
• “Over the next two years, demand is expected to rise three-fold to 15,000 but the
supply is expected to be 10,000,” TeamLease.
• Mercedes-Benz Research and Development India (MBRDI), visits campuses for
selection process.
• "1,000 engineers are currently working on electric vehicles in India", Team Lease.
• “The smart way is to develop the talent simultaneously while developing the
technologies,” company spokesperson.
• “Building talent instead of ‘buying’ or ‘renting’ talent is far more effective.
18-06-2021 22
Shortage of top talent may be e-cars' next big problem: July, 2019, ET- India Times
• Supply of EV experts on design, product, infrastructure, storage is not enough
• “We are forced to look for talent outside India due to a dearth within the country,” Hunt
Partners
• “EV development is at a nascent stage in India, almost every organisation will face a
challenge in terms of EV talent acquisition and development,” Maruti Suzuki India.
• “Companies which want to smoothly transition into this new phase of manufacturing
need to ensure that they work backwards towards preparing a future-ready
workforce,” TVS Motor.
• “We will continue to invest in the right talent to build superior products in the future. We
also continue to add more talent in the business and operation functions across the
country as we grow,”, Ather Energy.

18-06-2021 23
• There aren’t enough engineers with expertise in the field
• Current demand is more than 5,000 engineers – mostly in the electric,
electronic and mechanical disciplines – which is likely to touch 15,000
over the next two years
• Automobile companies such as Tata Motors, Mercedes-Benz,
Mahindra & Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki are queueing up at India’s
premier engineering institutes to attract top talent in EV technology.
• Tata Motors started building their own pipeline of EV experts
18-06-2021 24
Review of TATA NEXON (EV)
• Company claim above 300 km per charge (but in real it give 230 -240 km)
like petrol give 25 km/liter but actually give 20 km/liter
• If you charge it at home
(slow charging Normal 15 A Socket= in 1 hour only 10% charge so it take 9/10
hours to fully charges[1 night] ) both sockets are given for slow and fast
charger
(fast charging at charging station in 1 hours 80% will charge)
• Bill: for 30 kwh battery = 30 * 7/8 = 240 rs ( 1 unit =1 kwh= 7/8 rs)
• 3 mode = REGEN/ECO/SPORTS
• Battery warranty given by TATA = 8 Years /1.6 LAKH KM

  • 14. Is it costly to operate an EV over a period as compared to an ICE vehicle? • An EV has a higher upfront cost of procurement as compared to its ICE counterpart. However, the cost of charging, maintaining and operating an EV is lower than the ICE vehicle 18-06-2021 14
  • 15. • For example: Tata Tigor and Tata Tigor EV has been considered for calculation. Tata Tigor (ICE) has a claimed range of approximately 20 kms per litre. Assuming, a running of 100 kms, it would consume around 5 litres of petrol. Assuming the cost of petrol of INR 86.95 per litre, as of 08 Feb 2021. Hence, the cost of travelling 100 kms is INR 434.75. Tata Tigor (EV), with a total battery capacity of 21.5 kWh, the total cost of charging the EV would be 21.5 kWh x INR 7 per kWh (Assuming EV home charging tariff ), i.e. around INR 150. Hence it is economical to operate an EV than ICE vehicle. 18-06-2021 15
  • 16. Are EVs safe? • All EV batteries go through rigorous testing procedures at National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL) certified labs. • Certification agencies in India like ARAI, ICAT certify EV and Chargers. Thus, it is safe to drive an EV. 18-06-2021 16
  • 17. Benefits of choosing an Electric Vehicle (EV) over Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) Vehicle 1. Economical 2. Improved Air quality 3. Convenience 4. Other Benefits 5. Comfortably charge at home 6. Upfront incentives from Government to EV owners 7. Incentive for scrapping ICE vehicles 8. EV owners can claim income tax deduction up to Rs 150,000 under Section 80EEB 9. Reduced dependence of imported fossil fuel for the Country 18-06-2021 17
  • 18. Electric Vehicle Misconception 1. Transport sector is not a major contributor to emissions 2. EVs take too long to charge 3. EVs are costly 4. EVs have Low Range 5. EVs are not safe 6. EVs have Low Speed 7. EV batteries need to be replaced frequently 8. There are not enough EV charging stations 18-06-2021 18
  • 19. Government Initiatives for EV • Electric Vehicle Nation by 2030 • NEMMP • FAME • MEVP-2018 • Policy target 1) Increase no. of EV registration 2) Generate investment 3) Create jobs 18-06-2021 19
  • 20. MEVP-2018 • Incentives for Manufacturing of EV • Incentives & assistance for EV Charging • Incentives & provisions for EV Buyer 1. Incentives for only Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) 2. Initially Government of Maharashtra to promote EV in public transport in six cities ie :- Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad, Thane, Nagpur and Nashik 3. 10% subsidy for passenger buses registered in the State to private/public bus transport buyer, on base price (maximum limit of Rs. 20 lacs per vehicle) 4. 15% subsidy to private car/transport (maximum limit of Rs.5,000 for 2 wheeler, Rs. 12,000 for 3 wheeler, and Rs 1 lac for 4 wheeler) 18-06-2021 20
