This document is the first chapter of a textbook on electrical power systems. It introduces the key components and processes involved in generating, transmitting, distributing, and consuming electrical power. The chapter describes the generation of power at plants using various fuel sources, the transmission of power over long distances via high-voltage lines, its distribution over networks to homes and businesses, and different types of electricity consumers. It also outlines the main components of modern power systems, including generators, transmission and distribution networks, and protective systems. Finally, it provides an overview of Vietnam's power system.
