Effectiveness of synergy
movement technique and
stretching to reduce pain in
fibromyalgia syndrome
By..,
V.Rajadurai B.P.T
INTRODUCTION
‱ The word Fibromyalgia comes from Latin term
fibrous tissue (fibro) and Greek term muscle(myo)
and pain is (algia)
‱ Fibromyalgia is common condition for musculo
skeletal system
.its affects with men women in
80% >commonly in children's &elders ,,,it can
occur independently associated with another
rheumatic diseaseSuch as rheumatoid arthreitis
Fibromyalgia is a syndrome characterised
by chronic pain, stiffness and tenderness of
muscles and tendons and joints without
detectable inflammation.
Its not form of arthritis because does not
cause inflammation in the joint but
Fibromyalgia can like arthritis cause
significant pain and fatigue and inability to
carry on daily activities
Fibromyalgia is not always easy to diagnose because
symptoms vary from person to person many of the
symptoms are mimic those of other disorder and
there are no visible sign of the disorder the universal
symptoms of Fibromyalgia is pain
The pain in Fibromyalgia is not caused by tissue
inflammation. Instead, patient seen to have on
increased sensitivity to many different sensory stimuli
the result is on unusually low pain threshold.
The pain generally wide speared involving both side
of the body and commonly affecting with neck,
buttock, shoulder, arms, upper back, and chest.
CAUSE
Genetic predisposition
Stress induced cause
Sleep disturbances
Central dopamine dysfunction
Abnormal serotonin metabolism
Deficient human growth hormone secretion
Psychological factors
SIGN AND SYMPTOMS
DIAGNOSIS
DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY
STUDY DESIGN
It is study to determined The
effectiveness of synergy movement technique and
stretching to reduce pain in fibromyalgia syndrome
STUDY SAMPLING
The study includes sample of 15
subjects of male and female
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
Subject With Complain Of Wide Spread
Muscular Skeletal Pain For Atleast 3
Months
 pain at least 11 out of 18 tender point
both male and female
age between 18-65 years
pain in the bones of the body axis including
skull vertebral column, ribs, and sternum.
Inclusion Criteria
EXCLUSION CRITERIA
Moderate – sever chronic obstructive
pulmonary including asthma.
Cancer.
Uncontrolled hyper tension.
Diabetes.
Neurological or renal disease.
Use of medication that may affect
chronotrophic response to exercise.
STUDY SETTING
This study was done at devendrar
college of physiotherapy out patient
department,
Rhock multispecialty hospital tirunelveli.
RESEARCH TOOLS
The McGill Pain Questionnaire
The McGill Pain Questionnaire
can be used to evaluate a person experiencing
significant pain. It can be used to monitor the pain
over time and to determine the effectiveness of any
intervention.
(1) What Does Your Pain Feel Like?
(2) How Does Your Pain Change with Time?
(3) How Strong is Your Pain?
FUNCTIONAL ACTIVITIES
QUESTIONNAIRE
Ask informant to rate patient’s ability
using the following scoring system:
‱ Dependent = 3
‱ Requires assistance = 2
‱ Has difficulty but does by self =
1
‱ Normal=0
PROCEDURE
The selected subject received oral
instruction that explain the pain induction,
procedure course severity of fibromyalgia
syndrome and it spontaneous recovery and
not have self remedial measure for the pain.
The subjective pain measurement is
assesed by The McGill Pain Questionnaire
can be used to evaluate a person
experiencing significant pain. It can be used
to monitor the pain over time and to
determine the effectiveness of any
intervention.
SYNERGY MOVEMENT TECHNIQUE
This approach encourages development
of flexor and extensor synergies during early
recovery, with the intention that synergic
activation of muscles will, with training,
transition of movements.
To promote a increased in ADL activities
STRETCHING PROGRAMS
Stretching is a form of physical exercise in
which a specific muscle or tendon (or muscle
group) is deliberately flexed or stretched in
order to improve the muscle's
felt elasticity and achieve comfortable muscle
tone. The result is a feeling of increased
muscle control, flexibility, and range of motion.
Stretching is also used therapeutically to
alleviate cramps.
DURATION OF TREATMENT
SYNERGY MOVEMENT TECHNIQUE
30 mints a day for 4 days a week for
attest 2 weak
STRETCHING
20 minutes a day for 4 days a week for
atleaest 2 weeks

CONCLUSION
In from the above described outcome it is
suggested that synergy movement
technique and stretching give benefits in
reducing pain in fibromyalgia
.
As per Mcgill pain score there is significant
improvement in reducing pain and improve
the quality of life in patient with
fibromyalgia
In this tudy concludes that using of synergy
movement technique &stretching on
fibromyalgia patient within the age group
18-65 were effective
RESULTS & DISSCUSTION
The study of ‘”Effectiveness of synergy
movement technique & stretching to
reduce pain in fibromyalgia syndrome ;
Study was done on 15 subjects for the
periods of 2 weeks
The result obtained from the intervention of
the program me is significantly effective in
relieving pain which is assumed The McGill
Pain Questionnaire
