The labeling theory is another important theory in the groups of sociological theories. It essentially
states that no acts is intrinsically deviant, but rather are established by those in power through the
formulation of laws and the interpretation of those laws by police and criminal justice system
(Schmalleger, 2014). In other words until someone or a group in society says that XYZ is an
illegal act then it is considered non deviant (Schmalleger, 2014).
The person associated more often than not with the labeling theory is Howard Becker. Howard
Becker in the 1950s used symbolic interactionist approach to study deviance and focused on the
way in which negative labels get applied to individuals and on the consequences that this
labeling process creates (Becker, n.d.). In his 1950 s book Outsiders, Howard Becker focused
his attentions on what he called moral entrepreneurs or those who engage in the process of
getting particular behaviors and acts as being deviant and therefore illegal. As an example think

Dawa Center s (BODC) mission statement is as follows: Bilal Oromo Dawa Center is a charitable,
religious, social, cultural, educational nonprofit organization dedicated to serve the Muslim
community. As I have come to find out, BODC is a community center that offers many different
services for all its community members. The services range from tutoring services, weekend school
for Islamic studies, funeral services, Friday congregational prayers, family and marriage
counseling, youth sports, and general community services. BODC is a relatively new organization;
however, they stem from Tawfiq Islamic Center in North Minneapolis. Tawfiq Islamic Center (TIC)
has been open to the community since 2004 and is still open. TIC and BODC share a similar

Oklahoman author, Jack Bickham s passion shone through his writing starting at a young age then
pursuing into his career. He came to come into Oklahoma to become a journalist. Thereafter, he

The Exclusionary rule, as defined in our Criminal Justice Book: 7e, is the principle that illegally
obtained evidence must be excluded from trial. If any evidence, that falls within the field of the
exclusionary rule, is found that would otherwise not have been found by law enforcements, the
rule applies to linked evidence found and all the evidence after. This after evidence is often
referred as fruit of the poisonous tree. The exclusionary ruleis also looked at in a way to block law
enforcement officers from handling searches and/or seizures, a violation of the fourth amendment,
