PROSPECTUS 2014 7 Edwardes College Peshawarwas founded in 1900.It was named after Sir Herbert Edwardes KCB GCS Commissioner of Peshawar in the middle of Nineteenth century. Initially granted funds by the Church Mission Society London, the college started its educational services in the province. The college was affiliated with the University of the Punjab for intermediate, degree and MA History classes. In the late 50s the college got affiliated to the University of Peshawar for its various courses. In the 70s, when the nationalisation policy was implemented in the country, most of the private colleges/institutions of the country were nationalised. However, due to the efforts of its teachers, principal Dr. Phil Edmonds with the support of the then Governor Arbab Sikandar Khan Khalil and Chief Minister Maulana Mufti Mehmood, the college was saved from nationalization. The then provincial government decided to form a Board of Governors for this prestigious college. Since then the college has been providing excellent educational services to the students of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa irrespective of their cast, creed, and language. All the administrative powers of the college are vested in the Board of Governors with the Governor of the Province as Chairman and Minister for Education, the Bishop of Peshawar Doicese as vice chair, senior government officers which include Secretary Higher Education Department and old students and staff representative as its members. The college has the honour of being visited thrice by Quaid-e-Azam, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. During the same period, distinguished visitor to the college include Mahatma Ghandi and Khawaja Nazimuddin.
