Chapter 7 CURRICULUM INNOVATION This chapter discusses the concept of
curriculum innovation and presents different examples of curriculum Innovations
across different levels of education.
Activity 21
1. Define Curriculum Innovation
Curriculum innovation, where teachers design learning experiences by experimenting with
the curriculum and instruction, is an influential process. From a postmodern standpoint,
learning is seen as being unique to an individual, requiring connections that are wholly
different in each person's case.
2. Analyze the different types of curriculum innovations
 Research, Development, and Diffusion (RD&D) model.
 Social Interaction (SI) model.
 Problem-Solving (PS) model.
3. Give your impression about the positive contribution of curriculum innovations in
the education system.
Innovation in education encourages teachers and students to explore, research and use all
the tools to uncover something new. It involves a different way of looking at problems and
solving them. The thinking process that goes into it will help students developtheir creativity
and their problem solving skills.
4. Michael Fullan (1989) identified four (4) core changes in educational context that
shape the definition of curriculum innovation, what does it include?
It may be associated with curriculum change but refer to those changes to improve
educational system particularly in the area of curriculum. Michael Fullan (1989) identified
four core changes in educational context that shape the definition of curriculum innovation.
These include: 1.Some forms of regrouping or new grouping (structure); 2.New curriculum
materials; 3.Changes in some aspects of teaching practices (new activities, skills, behavior);
and, 4.A change in beliefs or understanding vis-à-vis curriculum and learning. Samples of
Curriculum Innovation Pawilen 2019 clustered curriculum innovations into several ideas
that continue to shape curriculum and educational systems in general. (The following texts
is lifted from Pawilen, 2019) A.Standards-based Curriculum A standards-based curriculum
is designed based on content standards as explicated by experts in the field (Glatthorn et al.,
1998). Curriculum standards include general statements of knowledge, skills, and attitudes
that students should learn and master as a result of schooling (Marzano, 1996; Glatthorn et
al., 1998). They are statements of what students should know and be able to do. Standards
generally include three different aspects: knowledge, skills, and dispositions.
5. Give your idea and concept about Standard-Based Curriculum.
In education, the term standards-basedrefers to systems of instruction, assessment, grading,
and academic reporting that are based on students demonstrating understanding or
mastery of the knowledge and skills they are expected to learn as they progress through
their education.
