This document discusses the editing techniques used in a car crash scene from the film The Descent. It analyzes various shots from different perspectives and how they were edited together, including shots inside the car to establish characters, shots of the approaching van edited with shots of the driver looking away, and computer generated imagery of poles and blood used for safety reasons. The editing builds tension and puts the viewer in the daughter's perspective during the crash.

2. Wide Shot and Pace
This is a wide shot. It establishes where they
have been or where they have visited. It also
shows they are speeding.
After the third shot it then cuts to Sarah, Paul
and Jessica inside the car. The pace of the car
also indicates there might later be a crash.
Also the length of the shot is 3 seconds.

3. Editing
This is the scene where the car
crash occurs . The first shot is a
over the shoulder shot of Sarah
to her daughter Jessica. And
then the second one is a shot
of Sarah's face . They have
edited it together in order to
understand the mother and
daughter relationship they
have. This is called Shot reverse
shot. We don’t really see a
connection between Jessica
who is the daughter and Paul.

4. Editing
These shots of Paul indicates he doesn't
have much connection with Jessica and
Sarah his wife. They have been edited with
the camera on him and then Sarah's voice
over.
You get this idea when Sarah and Jessica
are talking and Paul doesn't even bother to
talk or involve himself. Also when Sarah
turns around and touches his let he kind of
jumps and pushes it off. He might have
juno on his mind.

5. Editing
In order for the crash scene to take
place in the first shot they had to edit
the van in front of the car.
They purposely made Paul look away
from the road so it causes nerves
because you now know there is going
to be a car crash. They might of
positioned the camera in the back in
the middle because it might be the
little girls perspective of the crash.
The second shot is the same as the
first shot . When the car crashes into
the van they edited it together in
order to make it look more realistic.

6. CGI (Computer Generated Images)
This is the shot after the car crash when
the poles which was on top of the van
fly off and goes through the windscreen
of the car killing Paul and Jessica. The
poles are computer generated. Which
means they are technically graphics.
The poles are fake and so Is the
windscreen in the car. If the director
decided to use real poles the actor
would of literally been killed. Even
there stunt doubles.
The second shot is a real pole which has
been thrown into the headrest of the
seat which was filled with flesh and
blood. Once it hit the headrest loads of
blood and stringy looking gore come
out. It is called a prospective affect.

7. Editing
This has been fast edited. Also
the camera has been held up
by a crane in order to get the
shot fully.
The poles are real and have
actually gone through the
windscreen. It has not been
edited. Shot 1 slowly zooms out
to show more of the damage
which has occurred.

8. GCI (Computer Generated Images)
They have decided to use CGI in this
shot. They computer generated the
blood by the car wheel which
indicates that it might be Jessica's
blood. They then pace the camera
out slowly going upwards. It is still
attached to the Crain.
They also end that scene with a fade
in to black transition.

9. Summary.
Through out the beginning of the scene we are given
the feeling of normality and security when they are
driving . Often we are put in the daughters perspective
like when the van is coming towards them before the
crash and when the mom is facing her.
During the crash we get put in the perspective of the
daughter and then the after affects of the Computer
generated blood by the wheel of the car.
