The Dark Knight opening analysis

         By Kieran Fitzgerald
What I liked about the film opening?
• One thing I like about the opening it that is sets the scene straight away being
in a city therefore setting up the rest of the plot. I like how it takes us a while
to be introduced to any proper characters straight away (especially any
protagonists – with the major one being the joker at the end of the clip.
• Within the opening, there are high forms of actions in which the opening
instantly hooks the audience through this so we continue to watch the film but
also it helps to relate back to the genre of the film.
• I really like the heavy emphasis on the clown mask throughout the opening as
it provides an enigma code of “what is so special about the mask” and this
question isn’t answered till the mention of the joker is announced which poses
as the action code. The use of the clown mask also represent that the evil
villain will have an association to clown in which is really effective as some
people are scared of clowns so this helps to make the opening and the rest of
the film more dramatic in places.
• Instantly , there isn’t a lot of dialogue at first until the camera shows a group
of characters in the car in which we are therefore left to guess what will
happen (especially after the explosion of the window)
Textual analysis
Mise-en-scene: There are heavy uses of props such a guns and
masks which are used to relate back to the genre (being
action/super-hero) and also with the super hero theme, the idea
of identity being hidden. The props help to reinforce the power
these character have over civilians as they are not armed with
them (except for the one banker).
All the people in masks (in the bank) are wearing similar clothes
which helps to suggest that they are part of a gang and in which
we assume that this will be a continuous run through throughout
the whole plot but this is proven wrong when they all dtart to kill
each other.
Textual Analysis
• Sound: The first piece of sound we are introduced to is non-
diegetic sound being edited music into the opening. This
sound occurs when the camera shows a character standing
still holding the mask as the camera zoom into the mask
which is quite slow and creepy which helps to build tension
a lead the audience to consider the significance of the
mask. When the care appears, the music picks up which
shows that action will occur soon with these characters.
• When the characters start to talk (diegetic sound), there is
a repetition of the name “Joker” which helps to set up the
rest of the plot an because of the term joker, we can make
a correlation between the mask and the “Joker”. This helps
to suggest the “Joker” will be the villain.
Textual Analysis
• Editing: most of the editing used in the
opening is cuts which helps to follow the
action in the plot and switch between the
perspective of each character (for examples
the characters in the bank to the characters on
the roof). When there is action, like gun
shootings, the cuts are fast paced to reflect
the action on screen (this is emphasized by
  fast paced music)
Textual Analysis
• Camera Work: the opening begins with an establishing shot to
introduce the setting of the plot. This helps to hook the audience in
carry on watching as this camera work is a mixture of a zoom which
gives specific meaning to a particular building (where we see the
smashed glass). There is also a zoom used on the mask to give a
specific meaning to the mask. This helps to introduce that later
events will central around the use of this prop.
• An aerial shot is used when the character zip wire across the
buildings this help to emphasise the danger of what they are doing
and thus emphasising the danger of these character therefore
suggesting to the audience that these are the villian of the plot.
• Other camera work includes the use of mainly long and mid shots
to show the action happening in the bank and the gun shoot out in
the bank robbery. Also these shots occur when the characters are
  talking.

Introducing the plot, characters and
            genre and hook
• The opening helps to introduce the genre of the film being
a super hero action as instantly, there are forms of actions
being the window explosion of the bank robbery. The use
of instantly including action helps to hook the audience and
it effectively gets the audience to question what is
  happening?
• The only real character the opening introduces in the
“Joker” as the characters in the opening reference him a
lot. Therefore this suggests that the plot will include a
character called the joker in which we are to believe will be
the villain as the characters talking about him are involved
with a bank robbery (Evil). Therefore, because of the
superhero genre, we are to believe there will be a character
on a mission in the plot to stop the “Joker”
