The document outlines that 2017 is the Year of Open, marking several milestones in open education over the past 15 years, including the creation of the term "Open Educational Resources", the Budapest Open Access Initiative, and the first Creative Commons licenses. It encourages participation in the Year of Open through activities like hosting events, writing articles, or participating in monthly topics on open concepts. Finally, it announces the Open Education Global 2018 conference in the Netherlands on transforming education through open approaches.
The document discusses recent analyses from the OECD/CERI (Centre for Educational Research and Innovation) on innovative learning environments. It summarizes a project that aims to understand effective learning environments through international research reviews and case studies of innovative schools and programs. Key findings from the project highlight the importance of learner-centered, social, and assessment-focused environments that promote connected learning across activities and subjects.
- The Finnish higher education reform aims to help universities react faster to changes, diversify funding, compete internationally, and ensure quality education and research.
- As part of this reform, three universities - Helsinki University of Technology, Helsinki School of Economics, and University of Art and Design Helsinki - will merge to form Aalto University.
- The goal of Aalto University is to become one of the leading institutions in the world in research and education in its specialized fields by 2020 by combining the expertise of the three universities and increasing resources.
This document discusses MOOCs and their potential impact on higher education. It begins by defining MOOCs as massive open online courses with large enrollments that provide course materials for free. While MOOCs have generated hype around disrupting traditional universities, the document notes they are still in the early hype phase according to Gartner's Hype Cycle and it is unclear if they will truly displace established institutions. The remainder discusses one university's experience with MOOCs, online education programs, and strategies to blend open online learning with campus education.
The document discusses ICT for education in Europe and the new EU2020 strategy. It provides examples of studies and projects funded under the Lifelong Learning Programme 2007-2013 related to ICT and education. It also looks ahead to challenges and priorities for future ICT-enabled education projects and funding under the EU commission.

This document discusses digital accessibility in higher education. It makes the following key points:
1) Around 15% of students in higher education report having a disability or health impairment that limits their studies. Common impairments include mental health issues, physical disabilities, and chronic health conditions.
2) Ensuring digital accessibility and inclusion is important for complying with legal requirements and allowing all students to access information and learning opportunities regardless of ability status.
3) Higher education institutions need to consider accessibility in all dimensions of their work, from teaching practices to policies and engagement with stakeholders. Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence could improve inclusion but also risk exacerbating existing inequities if not developed responsibly.

This document discusses peer-produced eLearning content and the challenge of quality. It defines peer production as digital content created, edited, and enriched by peers of equal status. While peer production fosters creativity, quality mechanisms are still needed. The document proposes a QualityScape model where peers take roles in both creating and validating content. Examples of peer creation include authoring, editing, and enriching content. Peer validation involves reviewing, reflecting on, and learning from others' work. Quality is a balance between free creativity and structured processes.
- The speaker discusses the transformation of education driven by digital technology and the rise of a new culture of lifelong learning. She notes that knowledge has become the basic currency in today's global economy and that demand for higher education is fueling changes in attitudes and practices.
- Technology is empowering unprecedented global access to quality learning environments. It allows learners of all kinds to access education flexibly across time and space through online programs and platforms. However, digital divides remain, and cultural and linguistic differences also impact the effectiveness of e-learning.

1) New approaches to learning focus on dealing with change, uncertainty, and learning from a variety of sources rather than just teachers. This involves lifelong learning through formal and informal means.
2) Effective teaching adopts an approach that integrates learning, working and innovating as interconnected activities. Teachers collaborate both within and outside their institutions.
3) Creating open networks of practice allows teachers to jointly address real problems, develop solutions together, and share expertise in a transparent, accessible way. This supports a culture of open, networked learning.

Opening Up Europe: Strategy and the Added Value of CollaborationLisa Marie Blaschke
This document discusses potential collaborations between the Open Education Consortium (OEC) and the European Distance and E-Learning Network (EDEN) to promote openness in education. It outlines their shared missions of expanding access to education and notes that open universities have been slow to adopt open educational resources (OERs) and massive open online courses (MOOCs). Through partnerships, OEC and EDEN could connect institutions, share best practices on models and strategies for openness, and maximize the impact of their networks and alliances to help "open up Europe".
EUROPORTFOLIO: a European Network of Eportfolio Experts and Practitionersolio...EPNET-Europortfolio
The Europortfolio project aims to establish a European network of eportfolio experts and practitioners from education, training, employment, and lifelong learning to address the fragmentation of eportfolio initiatives, technologies, actors, and information. The network will define an eportfolio framework, transfer knowledge between initiatives, contribute to eportfolio policies, raise awareness among educators and employers, and develop a sustainable online community portal for sharing resources and practices. This will benefit eportfolio experts through collaboration and research partnerships, practitioners by providing tools and lessons learned, and policymakers with evidence and frameworks to inform policies. The consortium is led by the University of Zagreb and includes partners from France, the UK, Poland, Austria, Denmark, Spain, and the US.

Hybrid education has the potential to be more inclusive if developed well. It requires considering diverse student needs, backgrounds, and ensuring all students feel safe and have equal access to learn. However, increased use of online and hybrid approaches may exacerbate teacher workload without support. Assessing student learning and providing practical training also present challenges in online and hybrid environments. Moving forward, it is important to focus on privacy, ethics, and addressing biases when using learning analytics tools to understand student learning.
The document discusses barriers to transformation in higher education and proposes ways to challenge those barriers. The five main barriers are: viewing education as the role of specialists; a lack of demand crisis; technology being adopted to suit universities; high barriers to new competitors; and systemic inertia resisting change. The document suggests taking a learner-centered perspective, competing with existing approaches, and enabling changes within quality and funding systems to drive transformation through digital distance education.
The document discusses the evolution of education from distance/online learning through the pandemic. It covers many topics including how education is evolving with technology, the different generations, and practical competencies like laboratories. It also discusses standards for remote laboratories and how technology enhanced learning can contribute to open education and a smarter world. The main conclusion is that education is moving towards more adapted blended learning models.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
